An experimental investigation was made of the characteristics of several developers in the processing of T-15 and T-17 aerial films for a gamma of 1.4 plus or minus 0.05. The results of a comparison of the developers with respect to several parameters are used to estimate the relationships between the light sensitivity and information capacity. Development has been completed on a new off-line orthographic printer which uses an OMI optical printer and a Bendix Bx-272 control computer. The system produces either orthophotos or rectified photos from either frame or panoramic input photography. Compared to previous off-line printers, the new system offers higher resolution, accuracy, and speed. (Author)

This report covers the fourth year of a research effort devoted to the study of the application of image sensing arrays and related problems. Recent progress is reported in the areas of signal perturbation for edge detection and picture printing via LED's, optical data acquisition, use of Kalman filtering and smoothing for data resolution enhancement, and reseaux detection using spatial filtering techniques. It is intended that results of this effort will ultimately be applied to map processing and to other related areas. (Author), See also report dated Apr 73, AD-761 121.

This report describes a project in which sandhills (relic dunes) were leveled, and the sand was used to widen the beach against erosion. The project extended from El Segundo to Venice. Water, at high pressure, was shot from nozzles onto the hills. The resulting slurry (sand suspended in water) was sluiced down to a sump or low area. An eductor drew in the slurry by siphon, and discharged it by pipeline to a surge pit. Here, the slurry moved through a surge well to a dredge pump suction. The slurry was then moved by a series of pumps and pipelines to the beach. The report describes the process in detail, shows photos and drawings of the equipment and work, and also shows aerial progress photos of the area. There is need for the improvement of reliability and accuracy of identification marks during aerial photographic surveys. Stereoscopic images of ground photographs reduce the need for extensive laboratory work. The report is a collection of background papers that describe the basis for the analysis of damage to the inland forests of South Vietnam. The task of the forestry study team was to examine the impact of military defoliation in Vietnam upon the inland forests in terms of their short-term and long-term utility as sources of materials useful to the nation and its people.

Two study areas totaling approximately 11 sq miles, were selected at Fort Knox, Kentucky, for comparison with a previously mapped 60-sq-mi sample of terrain in West Germany and as potential areas for field tests with the prototype Armored Reconnaissance Scout Vehicles and comparison vehicles. Areal and linear terrain data from 119 sites, aerial photographs, and other pertinent information were used to prepare the Fort Knox terrain factor complex maps. These areal maps describe the terrain characteristics that affect vehicle performance, i.e. soil type, soil strength, topographic slope, obstacles, vegetation, surface roughness, and visibility. The linear terrain factor complex maps describe the terrain characteristics that determine 'go or no-go' vehicle performance, i.e. linear feature geometry, water depth, and water velocity.

A study was conducted to determine the feasibility of applying remote sensing techniques to Army needs for data in environmental monitoring, resource management, and master planning at multipurpose military installations in the continental United States. The environmental data requirements for these purposes were defined, and a general assessment was made of the applicability of current photographic, thermal infrared, and microwave imaging systems to obtain these data. Aerial photographic techniques were found to be the ones most generally applicable to acquisition of data relevant to basic environmental conditions. Prototype products, consisting of maps of basic environmental conditions, cultural features, and land use were produced from aerial photography of Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and a surrounding area. "Bill" Shemorry was a native of Williston, N.D. who began work in the newspaper industry as a newsboy selling the Williston Herald and the Williams County Farmers Press. In 1953, he started to publish the Williston Plains Reporter, which he operated for 25 years before selling to the Williston Herald. Shemorry then began to concentrate on his own writing and photography. In addition to writing many books on the history of Williams County, he also collected photographs of early North Dakota photographers. Shemorry was an active member of the Williston Fire Department, was Civil Defense Chief of Williams County for three years in the 1950's, and was a combat photographer in World War II. Shemorry's photograph of the discovery of oil in North Dakota on April 4, 1951 at the Clarence Iverson No. 1 is one of the most famous oil photographs ever taken, and was published in many national publications.

The article describes the principle of the EK 101 electronic copying machine, gives its technical parameters and explains its contribution from the point of view of the requirements of photogrammetry. The author describes test measurements made with the Stecometer, a precision stereocomparator described by O. Weibrecht, manufactured by VEB Carl Zeiss, Jena, involving 25-point network measurements, network-model evaluation, network triangulation, evaluation of signalled points in aerial photograph models, and photographic triangulation. The results showed that the instrument is capable of providing a coordinate-measurement accuracy of plus or minus 2.5 micrometers under average climatic conditions without the need for temperature-compensating stabilization of the measuring area. The instrument is inexpensive, can be operated conveniently, and has good mechanical and optical characteristics. It is judged suitable for use in analytical photogrammetry. Two models of atmospheric flow, 'compensation' and 'moist over- compensation' are found to be useful in the study of tropical weather in conventional and satellite observations. A numerical weather prediction model simulating important physical processes in the low latitudes is developed to test the feasibility of using ATS information to infer future weather distribution. Diagnostic studies using ATS films and conventional synoptic weather maps describe the weather situations in the Central North Pacific in terms of the theoretical models. Results of the prediction experiment and future use of ATS type data in numerical prediction models are discussed and application recommended. Appendix A gives a description of one method of following cloud motion in satellite photographs.

The report covers the design, development, and fabrication of a Photopolymer Printer and a Processor for printing, chopping, processing, and drying positive transparency prints from processed aerial film, in 250-foot lengths by 5 inches wide, by means of a photopolymerization process. The report contains a description of the Photopolymer Printer and Processor, as delivered, and describes the various tests and design considerations in selection of a light source compatible with the characteristics of the polymer material; exposure method; various system resolution tests based on light source, exposure method and interval, and photopolymer materials; processing, washing, and drying methods; and the development of equipment to implement these operations. The report also contains operational theory relating to the use of photopolymer material for making positive transparency prints. The formula for the photopolymer coating, with mixing and coating procedures, is included. (Author)

An analysis is made to determine the performance characteristics of the tri-service photo transmission system in transmitting imagery obtained from an airborne camera to a ground station by electronic means. (Author)

The report contains a study in phenology. It has been carried out under the cooperative auspices of the Danish Government and the U.S. Army's European Research Office. In this, study was made of the correlation between the life cycles of certain Arctic plants, especially planted in S.W. Greenland, and the prevailing meteorological and climatic factors and conditions obtaining there. The objective was to determine to what extent such conditions may be ultimately predicted from observations of plant growth alone. Although the period of years spanned (1964-1970) is too short to draw firm conclusions, tentative correlations are drawn and set forth in the report.

The purpose of the report is to illustrate and focus attention on the permafrost erosion along the Beaufort Sea coast of Northern Alaska. The thermal erosion of permafrost along the coast results in shore line recessions as great as ten meters (33 feet) per year. The recession is caused by wave action and air temperatures thawing the frozen sediments. The two areas which are discussed in detail are Elson Lagoon and Flaxman Island. Elson Lagoon is located south of Point Barrow, Alaska. Flaxman Island is adjacent to the Prudhoe Bay oil development activity.
