A study has been made of the differences produced in leucites by different methods of cooling charges, in the system NaAlSiO4-KAlSiO4-SiO2-H2O, consisting of leucite and silicate liquid. The results indicate that the ion exchange reaction in the system is so fast that metastable leucite-analcite solid solutions may be produced between leucite crystals and hydrous glass.

Automated models are used to classify and to plan treatments for patients with craniofacial pain. The clinical data used in the construction of the diagnostic and treatment planning models are discussed. Validation results are presented and applications of the models are considered.

SUMMARYComparative clinical trials of live attenuated and detergent-split subunit influenza virus vaccines were undertaken with 1048 volunteers in Western Australia. Volunteers were divided into three main groups, each of which received either live virus vaccine or a saline control administered intranasally, or subunit vaccine injected subcutaneously. No differences were recorded between the three groups in their post-vaccination symptoms. Serum samples were collected at various times up to 50 weeks after vaccination, and antibody titres were measured by haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) tests and, for 231 volunteers, by virus neutralization tests. The two vaccines were almost equivalent in inducing seroconversion in vaccinees with pre-trial HI titres of 96 or less, but the subunit vaccine stimulated a higher geometric mean HI antibody titre. The longevity of the HI antibody response was greater for the live virus vaccine. The height of the response and the longevity of neutralizing antibody were the same for both vaccines. Both vaccines provided a high degree of protection against epidemic A/England/42/72 influenza, and some protection against A/Port Chalmers/1/73 influenza.

Experimental study of the solution of KAlSi₃O₈ in leucite at P[H₂O] = 1 kbar indicates that leucites can take up to about 30 wt. % of KAlSi₃O₈ in solid solution. The experimental data are consistent with ideal solution of KAlSi₃O₈ in leucite. Amylomaize starches of 50% and 70% apparent amylose-content have been investigated. The iodine-binding characteristics of these starches are abnormal. The starches have been fractionated by a conventional dispersion and an extraction-sedimentation procedure. Both methods yielded a branched product having an apparent chain-length of 36 D -glucose residues, and a β-amylolysis limit of 65% conversion into maltose. Subfractionation of these anomalous amylopectins by both differential ultracentrifugation and iodine-complex formation gave fractions having properties comparable to those of normal amylopectin. It is considered, therefore, that 36-unit amylopectins in amylomaize starches are artifacts.

Fibrous calcite beds containing cone-in-cone structures occur in outcrops and in core and cuttings from the subsurface, at a constant stratigraphic position near the base of the Hare Indian Formation, throughout parts of Anderson, Peel, Mackenzie, and Great Bear Plains in the District of Mackenzie. These remarkably persistent beds have a maximum thickness of 2.75 in. (7 cm) and occur throughout an area of about 15 000 mi2 (24 000 km2). Their most northerly observed exposure is near the junction of Anderson and Wolverine Rivers, and the most southerly is at Powell Creek about 220 mi (354 km) away. The fibrous calcite marker beds are rock stratigraphie units that probably developed in partly consolidated muds close below the water/sediment interface in response to undetermined changes in the physicochemical environment. Organic material and plant remains in the surrounding sediments probably acted as catalysts to initiate nucleation and growth of the calcite fibers. The zone of fibrous calcite occurs within and delineates the approximate areal distribution of a sequence of sediments rich in organic remains, sediments favorable to the formation of petroleum source beds. Closely associated strata are likely to be of interest to industry.

There has been a great deal of valuable work done in the department of Social Philosophy in recent years; and, though much of it has been of a controversial character, it seems possible to indicate some leading conceptions about which there is not now very much difference of opinion, and which may be taken as furnishing a firm basis for future work. Many of the older conceptions—such as the Divine Right of Kings, the Social Contract, and the unqualified emphasis on either Liberty or Equality—have either passed into complete oblivion or are maintained in forms so greatly modified as to be hardly recognizable. Some others are perhaps just on the point of disappearing; but the following conceptions and special problems in which they are involved may be singled out as still retaining a certain degree of vitality.

Veins in a basanite from Central France show the hitherto unrecorded paragenesis of leucite-Na feldspar. These veins frequently occur in association with lherzolite nodules but are not restricted to the vicinity of the nodules. This assemblage may be stable at higher temperature in preference to nepheline-K feldspar.

The ultraviolet spectra and circular dichroism of dehydrocamphor and dehydroepicamphor show the effects of mixing the n→π* and π→π* transitions, which reach an extreme in their aryl derivatives. The 3-arylborn-2-en-6-ones have [α]D of about 1000°, with Iµmax up to 7600 and ΔIµ about 50 for the nominal n→π* band at about 315 mµ. The n→π* and π→π* transitions show the expected equal ΔIµ of opposite sign. These effects are rather less marked in the 2-arylborn-2-en-5-ones where the bridgehead 1-methyl group tilts the benzene ring out of the plane of the double bond. This twist in the styrene chromophore is confirmed by the ultraviolet spectra and circular dichroism of the parent arylbornenes.The spectra of various other βγ-unsaturated ketones are also reported.

This preliminary note records two discoveries in the Ross of Mull. Kyanite is considerably more widespread in the Moine rocks than previous investigations have indicated. Where the kyanite-gneiss enters the thermal aureole of the granite, large andalusite paramorphs are formed from kyanite.

Speculative Philosophy, or Pure Metaphysic, stands at the present time in a very interesting position. There is perhaps some degree of slackening in the construction of elaborate systems, though, with the recent examples of McTaggart and Professor Alexander before us, this may be open to some question. But at least we probably realize, more fully than was possible in previous generations, the exact nature of the problems with which pure metaphysic is concerned. Its work has been more and more clearly marked off from that of the empirical sciences (including even the more detailed aspects of psychology), and from that of the mathematical sciences (including even the quasi-mathematical aspects of formal logic); and its province can now be definitely confined to the general theory of knowledge and the light that is thrown by this upon the structure of reality. It is my object in this paper to indicate briefly the chief problems that appear to fall within its scope and the chief directions in which we may look for light upon them. It is well to admit, however, that metaphysical problems are difficult, and that any statements that are made about them, unless expressed in language of a somewhat technical character, are very liable to be misunderstood. I must try to avoid both the Scylla of obscurity and the Charybdis of superficiality.

Sources of earth noise have been identified and located for different parts of the frequency band from 5 to 500 mc/s. In the typical microseism bands around 75 and 150 mc/s, sources are associated with storm waves arriving at both distant and local sea coasts. During the winter months the primary-frequency microseisms measured at La Jolla come mostly from the coast north of Cape Mendocino and are due to major storms in the North Pacific. Double-frequency microseism sources are generally within a few hundred kilometers of La Jolla, but more distant sources have also been observed. In addition, both ocean and atmosphere produce local loading which becomes significant at frequencies below the storm microseism band.
