The effect of the velocity distribution at the inlet to blade cascades on the kinetic energy of secondary flows is treated on the basis of a simple mathematical model of an ideal fluid flow. The kinetic energy of secondary flow in reaction turbine blades is found to be very small, compared with that in impulse and compressor blades. The influence of blade spacing is also considered. By comparison with experimental data and with practical experience, the present results demonstrate the importance of separation of the three-dimensional, viscous fluid flow in blade cascades of finite length.

1. A technique for designing differential bridges in the case of two different resistance thermometer connections is provided. 2. The determining condition for selecting design formulas consists of the tolerated additional error in using either a two- or a three-conductor method for connecting thermometers. 3. The three-conductor connections are often used in practice. This is advisable for minimizing additional measurement error, but requires a larger number of connecting wires. 4. The application of a two-conductor connection is more economical, but under certain conditions it may lead to an increased additional error. This limits its application in practice.

The change in the macroscopic domain structure and magnetization ripples of iron-nickel films is investigated in the UEMV-100 electron microscope during heating from room temperature to 550°C.

On the basis of aluminosilicate bond made from heat-processed hydrated alumina and quartz sand in the molecular ratio of Al2O3: SiO2=3∩2, in conditions of autoclave processing at 800–1000 kg/cm2 in a period of 8–12 h, it is possible to obtain unfired aluminosilicate refractories with quite high physico-chemical factors. During the heating of the specimen after autoclave processing to the temperature of sintering, their strength diminishes to a small extent, which makes it possible to use these refractories directly in structures. The high strength of aluminosilicate refractories after autoclave processing is due to the formation of a gel-like hydrated aluminosilicate upon the interaction of Al(OH)3 with SiO2. The technology developed for the production of unfired autoclave firebrick and high-alumina refractories permits us to obtain large products which make it possible to industrialize their transportation and laying, and to reduce the number of joints in the lining.

Pseudocubical convex-faceted grains of pyrope are often found in upper parts of weathered crust, in sedimentary rocks and in modern alluvium, inside and outside the Yakutian diamond fields. They are never in the diamond pipes or in dense kimberlites where pyrope maintains its normal shape. The “cuboid” shape of pyrope grains is probably due to diagenetic and solubility effects, inasmuch as their optical properties and impurities are the same as those of the “normal” pyrope.

During the period of the establishment of Soviet power and the conception of planning, V.I. Lenin pointed out that "all the plans of the various branches of production must be strictly coordinated and connected, and together they must compose that single plan which we need so much." (1) In connection with the expansion and intensification of production ties among branches of industry and the national economy and the growing scales of social production, the task of coordinating and dovetailing the various sections of the state plan is becoming more and more urgent.

Beim Wirbelstosverfahren wird ebenso wie in der Wirbelschict ein Schuttgut von Gasen durchstromt. Durch eine besondere Gasfuhrung gelingt es, die Kanalbildung, auch bei Produkten mit starken Zwischenpartikelkraften, zu unterbinden. Der Abrieb kann klein gehalten werden. Um optimale Bedingungen fur die Trocknung von Schuttgutern zu erhalten, sind verschiedene Ausfuhrungsarten des Wirbelstosverfahrens entwickelt worden. Eine Ubersicht uber die Erfahrungen mit Wirbelstostrocknern wird gegeben.

A method of observing domain structure with an EM-7 electron microscope and a method of obtaining films with 180° boundaries are described. We consider the domain structure in the alloys 45% Co, 10% Mn, 45% Fe, and 45% Co, 10% Cr, 45% Fe, and also in films of Fe and Co. The width of the boundaries of polycrystalline films of Co was measured.

1. The effect of trichlorosilane on the direct synthesis of the phenylchlorosilanes is determined by its participation in the surface catalytic reactions for the formation of the desired products. For this reason the character of the effect is highly dependent on the activity of the contact mass. 2. A change in the formation rate and composition of the phenylchlorosilanes when trichlorosilane is added to the reaction zone is associated with a change in the concentration and composition of the intermediate products of the direct synthesis, namely, surface compounds of the SiCln type.

It is shown that increasing the length of a vee notch in polymethyl methacrylate sheet specimens does not significantly intensify the effectiveness of the notch as stress raiser. Over a broad interval of variation of its length the notch has a constant quantitative effect on the mechanical properties.

We have shown the possibility of obtaining densely sintered briquet (of porosity 10–15%) made of SrZrO3 and SrHfO3 by double firing and an intermediate grinding. The pressing and sintering qualities of coarse-grained (2-0 mm) bodies and the properties of samples made of them were investigated.

1. A novel method is proposed for determining the softening point of oil bitumens with high and moderate melting points; this method is suited for direct control in the manufacture of oil bitumens. With this method the softening point can be determined within 1 min. 2. The time needed for the preparation of the sample for analysis may be reduced by keeping the bitumen sample in air for shorter times, and by pouring the bitumen sample directly from the place where it is taken into the ring-shaped space in the slab.

Polycrystalline Fe, Ni, and Ni-Fe films have been studied by electron microscopy. The boundary widths have been measured as a function of the initial composition of the material evaporated.
