Abstract

SummaryPoly(A)-attached RNA (mRNA) was isolated from chicken and calf hearts. Both mRNAs were found to induce the development of explanted postnodal pieces (PNP) of stage 4 chick blastoderm into beating tubes and/or tissues. Heart formation is specific and the frequency was found to depend entirely upon the concentration of mRNA used. In contrast, the concentration had no influence on other tissue formation e.g., neural tube, tubules, myoblasts, and/or notochord.The uptake of heart [3H]RNA by PNP cells was analyzed using high-resolution autoradiography. Silver grains were localized more in nucleus than in cytoplasm. The effect of heart mRNA on PNP was sensitive to actinomycin D and bromodeoxyuridine. It appears, therefore, that exogenous mRNA plays an important role in nuclear function. This RNA may affect the nuclei of intact cells in two ways: (1) as a derepressor, and (2) as a primer of new DNA synthesis. Abstract

Functional interaction between histone and RNA was studied using Nelson mouse ascites cells. Liver RNA was capable of stimulating RNA synthesis and arginine-rich histone inhibited it. The potency of low molecular weight fraction was superior to the high and whole RNAs, but inferior to the nucleolar RNA. Poly I-C was unable to lift the RNA synthesis to a level above the controls.Intracellular distribution of 125I-histone was traced by high resolution autoradiography. The predominant nuclear uptake of histone coupled with early work on RNA uptake provided evidence for the in situaction of histone and RNA. The RNA-stimulated RNA synthesis was sensitive to actinomycin D. From studies on the action of RNA versus histone, it was concluded that the action of RNA was mediated by arginine-rich histone.Fig. 10. The "theory of genius" has always been the spiritual prop for upholding the rule of the exploiting class and the reactionary fallacy for hoodwinking the people. More than 2,000 years ago, Confucius, the spokesman of the slave-owning class on the decline, had vociferously publicized such stuff. He said: There are several types of people in the world. Some are "sages" and "superior men" "born with knowledge" who are not required to go through practice or study but are endowed with the "talent" to rule the moment they are born. Some are born "stupid of the lowest order" and are the "mean people" who have neither the ability nor the qualification for learning and they can only take orders from the ruling class. He also wildly declared: "Only the wise of the highest class and the stupid of the lowest class cannot be changed." Abstract

The cytokinin, 6-benzylaminopurine, is converted to its 7-glucoside in intact seedlings, organ slices, and tissue cultures from several plants. The ribonucleoside and 5′-ribonucleotide appear transiently, and the general metabolic sequence seems to be nearly identical in the four plant species thus far studied. The glucoside persists for long periods in plant tissues, while all other forms of the cytokinin are rapidly metabolized and disappear within a few hours. A procedure for the isolation in pure form of the glucoside is described.

Abstract

One-dimensional similarity solutions are applied to the shock and expansion waves which are induced in the target plasma exposed to a high-power-laser radiation. It is pointed out that ions in the shock-heated plasma and those in the expansion wave, respectively, correspond to the “fast ions” and “slow ions” detected in the experiment. Taking account of the anomalous absorption of the laser energy in the target plasma, we derive a relation \(T_{\text{e}}{\propto}{P_{\imath}}^{4/3}\) between the electron temperature T e and the energy intensity \(P_{\imath}\) of the incident laser light.

Abstract

This paper describes the coupling of a minicomputer with two rotational rheometers. In the first instance, the computer acquires output data from aWeissenberg Rheogoniometer in oscillatory shear, andFourier-analyzes stress and strain signals. The second instance utilizes a rotational rheometer specifically designed to be controlled by the computer, employing a servo-driven torque motor. The computer-rheometer system is used to analyze steady-state non-Newtonian viscosity and linear viscoelasticity, as well as non-linear dynamic behavior.

Abstract

— Two sets of experiments, designed to determine whether the C—C or C—H bonds of hydrocarbons act as the donor site in the contact charge-transfer complex between oxygen and hydrocarbons, were performed. It was found that the rates of oxygen uptake during the photooxidation increase with decreasing ‘s character’ of the C—H bond. Also, the rates of product accumulation during the induction period were shown to increase with basicity of the C—H bond, i.e., tertiary C—H > secondary C—H > primary C—H. The conclusion from these data is that the C—H bond is the donor site.
