A brief summary of solar driers is given. A simple shelf type drier is described and test results are outlined. The mathematical model of the multi-shelf type drier is developed and its solution using a digital computer is compared with test results to verify the mathematical formulation. Theoretical values of temperatures and drying rates are presented. Extension of the analysis for the refinement of the shelf type driers is discussed.

There are many publications about the microfungi, but only few papers on the higher fungi of Turkey.Pilat (1932) is the first investigator of Turkish larger fungi as far as the author is aware from the literatures. He has found 68 species of fungi from four different families. SecondZeybek's work is about one species ofMorchella that was found in the Western part of Anatolia.

Common points in Sallustius’s monographs entitled De coniuratione Catilina and De bello Iugurthino are forewords, identity definitions, and discourses. In particular, the discourses in these works attract readers’ attention. In the first work, there are two discourses Sallustius wrote from the mouth of Catilina. These discourses are devastating and provocative for private soldiers. Sallustius describes Catilina as physically sturdy, resistant to hunger, cold and sleeplessness, and psychologically ill. He is also defined as gutsy, cunning, hypocrite, and one who shows things as the way he wishes them to appear and who conceals the truth. The hero appears in the work as not only a “villain” but also a “villain who spreads villainy”. Catilina by Cicero also resembles this character, and Sallustius and Cicero both have put this hero’s stamp on history through their descriptions. The first piece whose translation is given in this article is the translation of the speech Catilina gave to his sympathizers. In De bello Iugurthino, two major Roman rulers who fight against the Numids appear in the text: Metellus from the aristocracy and Marius from common people who replaces Metellus. Sallustius shows his impartial stance while describing these two rulers in that he gave the noble Metellus his due, and acknowledged Marius with his good and evil characteristics. The second translated piece in this article is Marius’s address to the citizens after his election as a consul.

The water/gas, plasma/gas, erythrocyte/gas and pancreas/gas partition coefficients of133Xe were measured at 37° C using dog tissues. The pancreas/blood partition coefficients were calculated from these figures and plotted as a function of hematocrit. The133Xe pancreas/blood partition coefficient in the normal range was 1.2 ml/g.

WHEN blood serum is heated by being placed in boiling water the proteins coagulate and denaturation occurs. Such proteins do not migrate on paper electrophoresis. On the other hand, serum proteins subjected to temperatures higher than body temperature but lower than boiling point migrate in different ways depending on the temperature. Denaturation of proteins consists, essentially, of the cleavage of some cross-links between peptide chains. Heat denaturation is caused by the excessive thermal agitation of the peptide chains and the resulting cleavage of hydrogen bonds.

In this paper the results of four different author's works on soil fungi in Turkey is given. By means of the Soil Dilution Method and Soil Plate Method, 160 fungus species were isolated. In all areas which are investigatedPenicillium had the most species and the fungus number fluctuated in 1 g of soil between 17000 and 436000 and there were good correlations between fungus number and both water holding capacity and organic matter in the summer, but not in the other seasons in Erzurum.

Bergmann and Feeney1 have isolated a new thymine pentoside from a sponge (Cryptotethia). Isolation and identification of the carbohydrate fragment of this nucleo-side have been unsuccessful; but the high dextrorotatory power of this nucleoside suggests that it is a xylofuranoside rather than the as yet unknown thymine nucleoside.
