Abstract

The development of the chondrocranium as well as the morphology of the fully formed chondrocraniurn of Ophidia may now be regarded as well known. There are some extensive works in the literature concerning this subject. However, all the previous works were on members belonging to, more or less, advanced families specially the family Colubridae which includes the majority of living snakes. As far as the authors are aware, no complete work on the chondrocranium of any snake belonging to the primitive family Boidae has been published until now.

Abstract

The article discusses research done on two small organs of snakes called pits. It references a study by Doctors Theodore H. Bullock and Raymond B. Cowles, published in a 1952 issue of "Science." The researchers hooked up a rattlesnake's pit organ, connected it through an electrode to an apparatus that recorded its electrical impulses. It was concluded that the pits are used by snakes as a heat sensor.
