Abstract

The article focuses on the paper townsites in Minnesota depicted in the paintings of artist turned land agent Edwin Whitefield. He promoted the state in his sketches of beautiful, green and abundant prairies and fields when he first saw the place. However, due to the panic of 1857, several projects that might have improved the state have failed.
