An introduction to current trends in the digital processing and manipulation of images is presented. The paper does not attempt a detailed survey of the field, but outlines instead the motivation behind it, and the relationships between the 'disciplines' such as image enhancement, pattern recognition and scene analysis involved with processing images. Selected examples are used to indicate the state of the art. Finally the typical configuration of an image processing system is described. The processing speeds of available digital processors are discussed, and the need for special purpose processors is emphasized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reflected light from a yarn squeezed flat shows its peak value when measured in a plane vertical to the twisted fibers. A twist irregularity tester based on this principle, which operates automatically and records the change of twist angle, was constructed. Several twist irregularity curves were obtained with both staple yarns and continuous filament yarns. Some factors affecting the accuracy of the test results were discussed, and the curve was compared with the twist angle measured by visual observation. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This article explores the mental hygiene problems and programs related to service in the Armed Forces. Mental hygiene problems were presented by each volunteers or inductee in his efforts to make his own personal adjustment to the demands of service life. The problem of methods to be used in brief psychiatric examinations as the basis for eliminating such psychiatrically unfit as the feeble-minded, psychopathic, psychoneurotic, or psychotic was studied by both individual psychiatrists and by formal committees. Perhaps the hardest problem to be solved is the type of examination to be used, since group methods of personality study have not proved successful in civil life and there is at present no adequate group method available in the military.

This article focuses on the essential biochemical, anatomical, physiological and genetic factors producing the hair's defect. The regulation of the human hair cycle is one of the most mysterious biological events. Hair follicles develop in the 2nd-5th month of intra-uterine life. This first pelage is shed in 7th-8th foetal month. After birth no new hair follicles are formed unless as a response to severe trauma. The scalp hair grows for 1000 days, and will then rest for 100 days. However, the cycle can vary from 120 days to 7 years. There are 80-90 hairs in anagen to every 10-20 hairs in telogen.
