Abstract

3. (vi) THE BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF Chondrilla juncea, AN ECOLOGICAL APPROACH.

Abstract

A conference paper about the biological control of Chondrilla juncea is presented. It presents the results of the detailed ecological study being made on C. juncea and the organisms attacking it in Mediterranean Europe, as a prelude to biological control introductions into Australia. Using a line transect method at the dense Chondrilla sites between Barcelona, Spain and Nice, France, observations have shown that the plant populations decline to a greater or lesser extent according to conditions.

4. PHOTOCONTACT DERMATITIS FROM JADIT.

Abstract

The patterns of photo-contact dermatitis from Jadit (4-chloro-2-hydroxybenzoic acid-N-n butylamide) in Europe and South Australia are described and discussed. The clinical details of 11 cases reported by European authors are compared with those of 13 Australian cases, 11 of which are reported for the first time. It is noted that the average length of application before sensitization in Europe was greater than in Australia and is suggested that this difference is the result of climatic conditions. It is suggested that Jadit photo-dermatitis is a "conventional contact dermatitis" from photo degradation products; that the drug can be retained in the skin and thereby cause persistent light reactions; and that it can be absorbed following local application and be distributed systemically. Cross-reactions between Jadit and several sulphanilamide derivatives which had been previously described in Europe were also found in 6 Australian cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. Are There Other Countries to Which the Jews Can Migrate?

Abstract

The Anglo-American Committee says that "Such information as we receive about countries other than Palestine gives no hope of substantial assistance in finding homes for Jews wishing or impelled to leave Europe." This is confirmed by an examination of the immigration laws and policies of the countries in the United Nations with the largest areas and the best facilities for new settlers. Australia with an area of 3,000,000 square miles and a population of 7,000,000 has since 1920 negotiated a series of treaties with almost all Eastern and Southern European countries, in which the latter agree to limit the number of passports issued to their nationals desiring to go to Australia. About 8,500 Jewish refugees were admitted before the war, adding to a Jewish population of approximately 24,000.
