The article presents information about sociopolitical condition in Asia. This year, a quick sampling of conditions in 12 countries indicated that the legend for the first time seems to have lost its meaning. Asia is no longer cannibalizing herself. The extremes of hope and hopelessness are being replaced by a renaissance of workaday pride and constructive realism. Five years ago the dominant mood in Asia was fear. Along the entire Asian frontier separating Communism from the free world, there were zones of chronic tension and a sense of impending tragedy. For Asians the tragedy of the Cold War was that it threatened to overwhelm them, to tear down their freedom along with their lives and their livelihood, even before they could start building what they wanted.
