Lord Morley of Blackburn, the honest John Morley of old, we now discover, left a memorandum among his papers, telling the story of his resignation from the Asquith Government at the outbreak of the World War. This has just been published by his nephew and literary executor, Guy Morley. Short as it is, the memorandum is indeed weighty and illuminating. But once the die was cast, we are told Lord Morley felt that no advantage could be gained from public utterances. He was therefore content to write down for posterity the principles, opinions, and impressions on which he acted.
