Abstract
The article presents information on various classroom equipments which are helpful for the biology teachers in the United States. According to the author, display boards which are a modification of riker boxes can be made for flat, thin specimens such as leaves and flowers. A heavy thin sheet of cotton batting forms the foundation under the specimens. A durable and cheap substitute for chart cloth is waterproof sign cloth. This material is available at art supply shops. The common art of soap carving has proven a valuable aid to biology teachers in presenting three dimensional conceptions of biological subjects. Melted crayola wax crayons can be used as paints to color the different structures in the classrooms. An unbreakable board can be made by substitution of celluloid sheets for a glass. The glue, which is similar to commercial products called cold or liquid solder, is made by dissolving celluloid in acetone.
A short time ago as the author passed the New York Hippodrome on Sixth Avenue he was arrested by the colorful spectacle before his eyes. Against the rococo facade of the huge old playhouse great electric signs in dazzling white and amber cried out through the gathering dusk the news of the presentation of the "Passion Play." A cluster of immense incandescent bulbs cast a fierce white light over the sidewalk beneath the theater marquee and on a radiant quartet of angels newly painted on the under side of the canopy. The newly decorated lobby, filled with a glittering and expectant throng, was surrounded with tawdry imitations of stained-glass windows and translucent saints. An officious cordon of police patrolled the sidewalk, plagued the crowd of idle onlookers, and cleared a pathway for high hats as they emerged from limousines and taxicabs.
