This article discusses printed word, which is a key to the creation and diffusion of knowledge, to the maintenance of an active intellectual life and to the development of advanced technology. Further, books, periodicals and other reading materials are central to the educational system, to research and to the creation of an independent national culture. Regardless of what advances have taken place in the diffusion of information, scholars, policy makers and the intellectual community still depend, for the most part, on the printed word to communicate. Publishers control the process of book production and distribution, and are therefore, a usually ignored element in the intellectual equation. Publishers not only make ideas available to a broad public, but in many ways share in deciding which ideas will emerge into the arena of public discourse. All this has special significance in the developing areas, where the challenge of building a modern culture is great and where books are urgently needed for both education and for broader intellectual purposes.

In an attempt to assess the current state of theory and research in the study of the family, a survey of all articles focusing on marriage and the family published in 12 behavioral science journals from 1962 through 1968 was made. The findings related to the development and utilization of theory are reported in this paper. Findings indicate a general lack of utilization of theory to guide empirical research. When theory is used, it tends to be either structural-functional or interactional, with the developmental framework being the third most popular choice. Other theoretical- conceptual frameworks fail to appear to any significant extent. Articles appearing in recent years tend to be rated more positively on seven evaluational questions, this indicating an improvement in the quality of published papers on the family. This article focuses on a study of the publication policies of selected economic journals. A study of publication policies was made to discover among other things whether or not there is a need for additional space for the publication of the research results of the ever-increasing number of economists, and what kind of reception the virgin contributor can expect from the editors of these journals. The first and perhaps most outstanding discovery was that the number of manuscripts submitted was in many cases surprisingly low and the rates of acceptance correspondingly high. Furthermore, nearly half of the journals receive fewer than 100 manuscripts per year. All five of these journals receive over 100 manuscripts per year and all except one have rates of acceptance between 19 and 22 per cent. Even here, however, the picture is not entirely satisfactory. A survey of articles appearing within the past five-year period in the five leading journals referred to earlier revealed that there was in each case surprisingly little repetition of authors. In fact because of the large number of articles written jointly by two or more authors, the number of authors nearly matched the number of articles for each journal.

This article presents literature notes. As a result of a number of exchange agreements and in order to increase its coverage, "Literature Notes," will include some abstracts copied or adapted from other publications. The American Documentation Institute is not able to supply copies of the publications abstracted. Copies can be obtained from the publisher or issuing organization, or may be consulted in a library. A survey report was presented to the Documentation Committee of AGARD, describing federal activities in the science information field and the role of the National Science Foundation in promoting these activities.

The article presents the response of the author to an editorial published in the journal, and states his approval in support of the efforts of the editors who suggest changes and modifications to dull and unimaginative manuscripts instead of rejecting and returning them. It also highlights the contemplation of the author regarding the submitting of his own manuscript for publishing, and presents his plans for such an action.
