The Institution of Electrical Engineers conducted a study in the United Kingdom and the United States to determine the need for their new publication "Current Papers in Physics (CPP)," and its usefulness to the physics community. Questionnaires were used to (1) recruit panel members to test reader reaction to the publication over a period of one year, (2) collect necessary background on panelists, (3) determine methods used by physicists to obtain current information prior to CPP, and (4) discover what physicists felt a good awareness journal in physics should be like. Prior to CPP, the three most widely used methods of current awareness were (1) scanning current issues of journals (2) contacts with colleagues, and (3) listening to presentations at meetings. The use of abstract journals was a major method of both retrospective search and current awareness. A major concern for an awareness journal was that it be current. Physicists were concerned with specialized aspects of physics and not general information. Appendixes contain (1) questionnaires, (2) additional panel data, (3) data on overseas panels, and (4) comments on published abstract journals as current awareness tools. (DH)

A PAPER PRESENTED TO THE SECTION ON EDUCATION (Q) OF THE 1967 AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF SCIENCE ANNUAL CONVENTION, THIS DOCUMENT DISCUSSES THE ACTIVITIES OF THE DIVISION OF SCIENCE TEACHING (DST) OF UNESCO. INCLUDED ARE DISCUSSIONS OF (1) THE OVERALL PROGRAM BUDGET, (2) AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF DST AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE EDUCATION SECTOR OF UNESCO, AND (3) A DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT OVERALL PROGRAM AND PROJECTIONS FOR THE FUTURE. THE PRESENT PROGRAM IS DESCRIBED UNDER ITS FOUR MAIN PARTS (1) COLLECTION AND EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION, (2) PILOT PROJECTS ON NEW APPROACHES AND MATERIALS FOR THE TEACHING OF BASIC SCIENCES, (3) OTHER ACTIVITIES TO IMPROVE THE TEACHING OF THE BASIC SCIENCES AT UNIVERSITY AND POST-GRADUATE LEVELS, AND (4) STIMULATION OF INTEREST IN SCIENCE. SPECIFIC PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS BEING CARRIED OUT UNDER EACH OF THE FOUR MAIN PARTS ARE DISCUSSED AND THE PRIMARY GEOGRAPHIC AREAS AFFECTED ARE INDICATED. The "Television Polytechnic" program of 1966 - 1970 was a joint effort of the Polish Ministry of Higher Education and Polish Television to provide televised education for working students. The subjects taught were those normally included in the first two years of the higher technical schools--math, physics, geometry, chemistry, mechanics of materials, and electrotechnics. Each semester lectures were given by professors from the higher technical schools, and students were provided with texts and access to consultation centers. Assessment indicated that television lectures were helpful to regular students as a complement to their classroom experiences and were a useful means of providing basic instruction to those not enrolled in a higher school. Preparatory and first year television courses will remain as permanent elements in the Polish educational system and the recent implementation of a second channel will lead to an expansion of programs, including many aimed at post-graduate audiences. During the first year of publication of Current Papers in Physics (1966) a joint study was undertaken in the UK by Aslib working under contract with the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and in the US by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) to assess the need for the new publication and its usefulness to the physics community. The study was designed in three phases. This report covered the third phase which was conducted after nine months of publication of CPP. 215 physicists in the UK and 393 physicists in the US returned a copy of the October 10, 1966 issue of Current Papers in Physics on which they had indicated items of interest to them. These markings and any additional comments offered by the respondents were analyzed in terms of the physicists' specialties to provide detailed information on the optimum arrangement of CPP to match the fields of interest of the physics community. In addition, the methods in which CPP is used, and the number of requests for abstracts and papers of references in this issue of the publication were recorded. (Author)

Comments on the coverage, format, arrangement and subject division of CPP were analyzed. The results show that the panel is reasonably satisfied with CPP as it is currently produced. The page size and subdivision of major headings were the areas in which changes might be considered. (Author)

These proceedings of a 1965 conference on the teaching of science in the sixth form of English schools contain summaries of each speaker's introduction to his paper, the full text of his circulated paper, and a summary of the discussion that followed. The papers were titled the sixth form; "Structure and Properties of Matter" as a sixth form course; biology in the sixth form; engineering studies; general and special studies in science; science for the arts specialist; and sixth form curriculum and examinations. During the conference the "Structure and Properities of Matter" course was renamed "Physical Sciences." Post-scripts on the physical sciences course, on engineering studies, and on the proposal for a major/minor/general studies pattern of sixth form work have been added to provide information on subsequent thought and action in these three fields which were the most controversial topics discussed at the conference.
