The article presents abstracts of various research papers published in the June 1961 issue of "Journal of Health and Human Behavior." One of the abstract discusses the relationship between and intrapsychic processes. Another abstract presents a study which attempts to ascertain, and account for, the presence of significant differences in knowledge of attitudes toward mental disease between a sample of high school boys and one from a boys' reformatory. The purpose of one of the papers on hospital-patient relationships is to clarify the precise nature of the relationship between mental hospitals and patients and to compare and contrast it with the relationship between medical hospitals and patients. Another paper on mental hospitals presents information about four types of "pathway" organizations which seek to assist in the transitional period between the discharge of a mental patient from a hospital and his re-entry into community life. The four general types considered are day hospitals, halfway houses, sheltered workshops, and ex-patient organizations.

This paper offers an analysis of some of the paradoxes in current nursing education and professional organization with specific relation to the health needs of people and the goals of nurses. Seventy-six Bender-Gestalt protocols were scored utilizing the Ham Scoring Method. The subjects were young adult moderately or mildly mentally retarded females. Protocols were scored for Ham's 15 differentiating signs identifying brain damage: 37% of the rehabilitated group and 39% of the non- rehabilitated group received critical scores. The article discusses the development of a staffing model for both first and second trimester abortion services following the adoption of the latest abortion law in the state of New York. The staffing model is aimed at minimizing personnel cost, achieve a satisfactory level of quality patient care and conform to the New York City Health Code. The model was developed after the New York City Department of Health showed their concern regarding the enactment of the abortion law, where no residency requirement nor any limitation of the type of facility where abortions will be performed.

In this article the author argues that in order to evaluate therapeutic procedures by means of psychological tests, the investigator felt that better standardization and objectivity would result if patients were tested in a group situation rather than in an individual one. Mute catatonic patients can, with the proper amount of probing, be made to talk. Fairly well-composed hysterics and severely depressed neurotics will often break down during individual testing situations. They will wring their hands, cry and ask for sympathy and help.

The article reports that individual care of the patient and his personal comfort are the basis as well as goal of nursing profession. The reason for discussing over and over again this unquestioned basic fact of personal contact between nurse and patient is to be found in the notion, that mutual contact is an ideal which is rarely attained consciously by both partners. More often the nurse may observe the patient's recuperation with deep engagement while the patient does not notice it; or the patient remembers decisive experiences of the nurse's professional devotion, without the nurse being aware of any attendant significance.

The article cites a study that was conducted to develop an objective scoring procedure for two tests popular with clinicians and apply it to protocols obtained from a sample of deaf clients and to validate the empirically derived scores against independent ratings and client progress in a rehabilitation program. In the study Bender-Gestalt and Draw-A-Person protocols of 57 deaf young rehabilitation clients were quantified on five factorially derived personality dimensions. Researchers revealed that resulting scores were reliable and independent of non-personality variables. The majority of those correlations with 10 independent criterion ratings and outcomes were insignificant.
