Background: The purpose of this study was to estimate individuals' expected longevity based on self-assessed survival probabilities and determine the predictors of such subjective life expectancy in a sample of elderly people (50 years and older) in Côte d'Ivoire.Methods: Paper-based questionnaires were administered to a sample (n = 267) of older adults residing in the city of Dabou, Côte d'Ivoire in May 2017. Information on subjective expectations regarding health, comorbidities, and self-assessed survival probabilities was collected. We estimated self-assessed life expectancy and its determinants using a two-pronged approach by: (i) estimating individuals' life expectancy using the self-assessed survival probabilities (SSPs), and (ii) applying a finite mixture of regression models to form homogenous groups of individuals (clusters/components) and investigate the determinants. A spline-based approach was used to estimate the overall distribution of life expectancy for each individual using two to four points of self-assessed survival probabilities. A finite mixture of regression models was used to identify homogeneous groups of individuals (i.e. clusters/components) of the overall subjective life expectancy distribution of the study participants.Results: The mean subjective life expectancy in older people varied according to four components/clusters. The average subjective life expectancy among the elderly was 79.51, 78.89, 80.02, and 77.79 years in the first, second, third, and fourth component of the subjects' overall subjective life expectancy, respectively. The effect of sociodemographic characteristics, comorbidities, and lifestyle on subjective life expectancy varied across components. For instance, a U-shape relationship between household per capita income and subjective life expectancy was found for individuals classified into the third component, and an inverse U-shape relationship was found for individuals classified into the fourth component.Conclusions: We extended the estimation of subjective life expectancy by accounting for heterogeneity in the distribution of the estimated subjective life expectancy. This approach improved the usual methods for estimating individual subjective life expectancies and may provide insight into the elderly's perception of aging, which could be used to forecast the demand for health services and long-term care needs. The impact of the forth industrial revolution on the social and natural environment is considered significant and far-reaching, even though the interactions of the human, natural and manufactured assets are less understood, extremely complex and unpredictable. The paper discusses how present days' – so-called cyber-physical – manufacturing systems operate in the fabrics of society and the natural environment. It is underlined that they show and – to an increasing extent – will show features and capabilities reminiscent of living beings and organizations. This view helps to understand how manufacturing interacts with the ecosystem and suggests resolutions for the dilemma of competitive and sustainable manufacturing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

From a social-scientific perspective, this paper addresses an overlooked dimension of material poverty, namely spiritual poverty or the lack of spiritual sensitivity, and calls it a psychological disorder. Religions link deep spirituality with a kind of "poverty," namely simplicity of lifestyle and generosity toward the needy; but none advocates the poverty of outright destitution. A fully psychological "spiritualogy"—built on Bernard Lonergan's analysis of human consciousness or spirit and consonant with the humanistic psychology of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow and current psychotherapeutic understanding—explains the link between spirituality and poverty as a matter of personal integration and suggests interventions to address the corrosive epidemic soul sickness of the postmodern world, so different from traditional societies in which religion and culture intertwined and functioned effectively. Introduction: Health professionals often have cumbersome responsibilities, performing their roles in complex environments under stressful circumstances. Resilience has been recognized as an enabler of thriving in such adversity and remains vague in the health profession literature. Aims: This paper aims to provide a synthesis of existing literature reviews of the evidence for resilience in health professionals, thematically integrating factors affecting resilience in health professionals. Methods: Electronic databases were searched systematically using inclusion and exclusion criteria to include literature reviews that explored resilience in health care professionals using purposive sampling of primary research studies. Results: Nine studies were identified. The definition of resilience varied across the studies. Four main themes of factors affecting resilience were found: (1) the influence of individual factors (e.g. individual traits, having a higher purpose, being self-determined), (2) environmental and organizational factors (e.g. workplace culture), (3) approaches that an individual takes when interacting with her/his professional circumstances (e.g. professional shielding and self-reflection), and (4) effective educational interventions (e.g. resilience workshops). Conclusions: Resilience is multidimensional and can be affected by multiple factors. Interventions to improve resilience should consider context and focus on improvement of adaptive abilities of health professionals in adversity. Secure, affordable housing is strongly linked to wellbeing in older age. This paper reports on a study of childless and poor older Malaysians who are potentially a vulnerable group in relation to accumulating such housing resources for older age. Childless is defined as a person without biological, step or adopted children, and poverty is defined following the national guideline. The research explores the cumulative advantages and disadvantages over the lifecourse that may influence their routes to attaining, or failing to attain, secure and stable housing in older age. Semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 34 childless and poor older Malaysians in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, were analysed using a lifecourse perspective to identify the events/experiences that had shaped their housing arrangements in old age. Housing arrangements are hierarchical in structure and can be categorised into four types: home-ownership, public-rental, private-rental and informal housing arrangements. The capacity to afford secure housing (i.e. public rental or ownership) decreased with ill-health and reduced opportunities to work. Structural and policy factors such as eligibility for public housing had also contributed to shaping current housing arrangements. Family poverty, low levels of education and, consequently, reduced employment opportunities affected the ability to accumulate the financial resources needed to afford housing in older age. Some individual decisions and situational disadvantages also contributed to reductions in housing choice. From the social and cultural context, some participants with greater networks had more choices and advantages in the accumulation of housing resources. Initiatives to provide retirement entitlements for workers have not favoured those in low-level informal employment or have come too late to assist those who are now older people. In conclusion, more disadvantages than advantages were accumulated earlier in their life, impacting on their ability to have affordable, secure and stable housing in older age. The purpose of this paper is to explore turbulence-ease in integral human-environment field patterning. This is significant for nursing theory, research and practice given that turbulenceease is a pervasive experience in the life process. Existing literature on the rhythm of turbulenceease within unitary science is summarized. For a more robust understanding of turbulence-ease, the concept is explored through personal, empiric and aesthetic patterns of knowing. Insights from these areas inform an enhanced perspective of the rhythm of turbulence-ease within the Science of Unitary Human Beings (SUHB). The aim of the Scottish AHP LifeCurve™ survey was to gather a snapshot of where people are on their LifeCurve™ when receiving allied health professions (AHP) services and to understand the cost consequence of intervening 'late' in the ageing trajectory. The objectives were to promote discussion around preventing functional decline, support innovation in service delivery, and facilitate broader engagement with individuals, communities, and wider environments for improving health and well-being in later life. In addition, subsequent learning could help address the increasing resource gap between the demand and capacity across health and social care. The survey was paper-based in the form of a printed booklet, which contained the 15 activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental ADL (IADL) which comprise the LifeCurve™ with additional lifestyle questions and information about the member of staff and service the participant was seen in, including their Community Health Index (CHI) number. The survey questions and booklet layout were tested over a five-month period with AHPs and people receiving AHP services. Liaison with national health literacy colleagues and lead speech and language therapists ensured that the survey material was accessible to a wide range of people. In addition, the survey could be made available in alternative formats, on request. Agreement to undertake the national survey was obtained in November 2016 by all AHP directors and associate directors who appointed communication support leads in their area who would support implementation at all stages at a local level. All materials relating to the survey were published on a dedicated area of a community of practice to support awareness and training during the preimplementation phase. AHPs working in adult services were asked to complete a survey with a minimum of two people they would 'typically' see in their service during a two-week period in May 2017, with the exclusion of people who were too unwell to participate, children and young people under 16 years, and adults with incapacity and without a guardianship arrangement in place. Approval was gained from the Public Benefit Privacy Panel to link the survey data to participants' health service usage using their CHI number. Completed forms were returned to the University of Strathclyde for entry into an encrypted electronic database using a double data entry process and were allocated a unique identifier. The unique identifier and CHI numbers were sent to Information Services Division (ISD), and then, the CHI numbers were deleted from the encrypted database. ISD sent the linked health data to the Scottish Government Analytical Services Division, which thus produced a full encrypted and anonymised database. The data explain what stages on the LifeCurve™ AHPs are intervening, and the matched data provide associated healthcare costs at each stage. Due to poor or missing data in the AHP/Service section, only 60% (n = 8261) of the total completed surveys were able to be matched with health service usage records. These data show that whilst AHPs are seeing people at each of the 15 ADL/IADL stages on the LifeCurve™, interventions fell into three groups where 25% of people where seen at the 'precurve' stage, 13% of people at 'mid-curve' (stage number five), and 39% of people at 'late-curve' (stages 10 to 13). The healthcare cost usage of these participants increased the further along the LifeCurve™ a person moves, with an average annual cost of £2700 at 'precurve' rising to £12,330 at 'late-curve' in 2016–2017. The results indicate that different services and professions are represented at each of these three points. So, for example, as might be expected, outpatient (especially musculoskeletal) services were seen more often at the 'precurve' stage, and in-patient and community rehabilitation, services were seen more often at the 'late-curve' stages; diagnostic radiographers and orthoptists saw people at the 'early-curve' stages, dieticians and podiatrists saw people at the 'mid-curve' stage, whilst physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, and occupational therapists saw people at the 'late-curve' stages. Data analysis showed this pattern is different for people receiving mental health services and, so, their data were removed and will be analysed and reported separately. It is clear from the results that healthcare costs increased as participants moved down LifeCurve™ stages, that is, as their levels of functional decline increase. It is also clear that AHPs are intervening late in a person's functional decline with associated limitations on changing their ageing trajectory. The cost consequence of this is significant – moving someone from 'late- to mid-curve' could save £3200 per person per annum. However, those AHPs typically associated with reabling approaches and rehabilitation, which have greatest potential to change ageing trajectories, were not represented at the 'mid-curve' stage (e.g., physiotherapists, occupational therapists). Therefore, we must find places to have conversations with people to inform them that functional decline is malleable and not inevitable purely by virtue of chronological age and provide education and support to prevent or reverse functional decline and collaborate around strategic planning and commissioning to offer different options that support an optimum LifeCurve™. • Functional decline in later life has been found to occur in a hierarchical order and is described in LifeCurve™ using 15 ADL/IADL. • Mapping people seeing AHPs against Lifecurve™ demonstrates they are intervening late with associated higher healthcare costs. • Prevention/early intervention can prevent high healthcare costs, change ageing trajectories and support healthy ageing. The last writings of Pamela Sue Anderson dwell in some depth on the facts of "mutual vulnerability" and "precarious life," whether at a practical level or in philosophical argument. This topic can be considered in relation to the founding values of "philosophy" in the tradition we inherit from Plato. Although military imagery (immunity to attack etc.) is foregrounded in the Platonic conception of "dialectic" – that is, conversation or dialogue in a specialized sense, capable of leading to the stable possession of truth – we should also remember the more ordinary (imperfect, incomplete) prototype of conversation from which this idealized version emerges: conversation as exemplified by the sacrificial figure of Socrates, who claims not to know anything. The present paper suggests that there are these two sides to the classic dialectical encounter: aporia itself, along with the ambition to escape from aporia – to be no longer at a loss. But it also considers why, in that case, writers such as Anderson (or like Judith Butler) should still find so much potential in the theme of "precarity." This question returns us to the institutional critique of philosophy: to a mismatch between (1) the moment of vulnerability inherent in the discipline a priori, and (2) the lived experience of vulnerability about which some practitioners of the subject – namely women and other disadvantaged groups – know so much more than others. Understanding how children experience social work interventions is an important part of gauging whether what is provided is genuinely helpful. In this paper, we describe the findings from a research project using Q‐method, aimed at understanding what children involved with statutory services think about their social workers and how they experience the time they spend together. Using a pre‐existing practice framework, we explored skills including empathy, collaboration, and purposefulness from the point of view of children and young people. The participants in our study (n = 22) were insightful observers of social work practice, able to describe not only how they experienced time spent with their workers but also inferring differences in motivation and approach. In addition, workers who were described in similar terms by different young people were nevertheless experienced differently. This suggests not an archetypal "good social worker"—instead, there are skills that are good for specific children at specific times within the context of specific relationships. This paper reported a study on the tensile creep behavior of continuous-glass-fiber composites. To simulate the stress state of the composites in the pressure vessel and reduce the influence of clamping force, a tensile creep test method for annular specimens was developed. The tensile strength and tensile creep under different stress levels of composites were investigated. Based on the time-stress equivalence principle, the maximum creep stress of the composites with 50 years service life was fitted by a double logarithm method, which provides a technique support for the design of composite pressure vessels. Based on the time-stress equivalence principle, the maximum creep stress of composite is fitted by double logarithm method. Background: The Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise (LiFE) programme is a fall prevention programme originally taught in a resource-intensive one-to-one format with limited feasibility for large-scale implementation. The aim of this paper is to present the conceptual framework and initial feasibility evaluation of a group-based LiFE (gLiFE) format developed for large-scale implementation. Methods: The conceptual gLiFE framework (part I) is based on three pillars, LiFE Activities and Principles, Theory of Behaviour Change and Behaviour Change Techniques, and Instruction. The feasibility of gLiFE was tested (part II) within a multimodal approach including quantitative questionnaires measuring safety, acceptability (1 = best to 7 = insufficient), and adherence to the LiFE activities (range = 0–14) as well as a focus group interview. Exploratory self-reported measures on behaviour change including self-determined motivation (range = 1–5), intention, planning, action control, and habit strength (range = 1–6) were assessed pre and post intervention. Data analyses were performed using descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis. Results: The development process resulted in a manualised gLiFE concept containing standardised information on gLiFE's content and structure. Feasibility testing: Six older adults (median = 72.8 years, 5 female) completed the feasibility study and rated safety (median = 7.0, IQR = 0.3) and acceptability as high (median = 1, IQR = 1). Participants implemented 9.5 LiFE activities (IQR = 4.0) into their daily routines. No adverse events occurred during the study. In the focus group, the group format and LiFE activities were perceived as positive and important for maintaining strength and balance capacity. Self-determined motivation intention, planning, and habit strength were rated higher post intervention. Conclusion: The developed conceptual gLiFE framework represents the basis for a gLiFE format with potential for standardised large-scale implementation. Proof-of-concept could be demonstrated in a group of community-dwelling older adults at risk of falling. Questions about what is life, when it begins, and when it must be protected are central to the debates about abortion, contraceptive methods, assisted reproduction techniques, and other related issues. The objective of this paper is to examine the technoscientific developments that have led to these questions, and to consider the cultural impacts of these debates. To address this, secondary sources were used to create a compilation of specialized literature. The development of intrauterine visualization technologies and genetic narratives, which have become part of popular culture, were analyzed as visualization and enunciation regimes that are part of a complex"dispositive of life". By recovering this Foucaultian concept, this article characterizes the ways in which images and narratives about zygotes, embryos and fetuses, represented as synonyms of "life", circulate freely forming a network of knowledge/power that modulates bodies and subjectivities. It is concluded that the concept of "life", as we understand it today, isa construction developed throughout the twentieth century, nourished by elements of technoscience, but reproduced in circuits that transcend those fields. My aim, in this paper, is to think about an emergent tradition of literary biographies in Latin America: biographies written by contemporary writers (1985 - 2016) about other writers' lives (the biographical production of seven novelists: Osvaldo Baigorria, Ricardo Strafacce, Fernando Vallejo, Carlos María Domínguez, Jorge Edwards, Santiago Roncagliolo y Rafael Gumucio). Specifically, this essay proposes to analyze the construction process of this tradition in regard to the emotional bonds that link certain writers with others and provide reasons to tell the life of others. The relationship between biographer and biographed shows a contiguity line founded in literary respect whose effects are contamination, transference and infection. Two lives are tensioned in the writing and formulate an imaginary and loving space where practices and mechanisms are put into place in order to appropriate someone else's memories. Various phenomena of life are typically explained by the physical sciences. Although the biological structures of a living being are subject to physical laws, we suggest that life, information, and consciousness are biological phenomena that are not. In this paper, we present new concepts and viewpoints about the very nature of biology. Life, information, and consciousness are identified as a unique set of biological phenomena that are common to only and all living beings. These three distinct phenomena always occur together in a whole pattern, and matter is viewed as the carrier of these phenomena. We explore the unique characteristics of life, information, and consciousness, and their relationships to one another. The experiences and behaviors of human beings, our presentday knowledge of biology, and some organisms' simple behaviors that we can observe are used to understand these biological phenomena. A distinction between genetic information and nongenetic information is also made, and their importance to life is emphasized. The interactions of biological activities between living beings and their environments are explained in the context of improving their chance of survival. Additionally, consciousness is simplified and exemplified via five categories from a hierarchical perspective, and various types of death are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is an emphasis on the politics of 'life' through the lens of 'marginalization' and the giving and taking away of life with the solution being reducible to Said's understanding of the marginalized making a "voyage in" from the periphery to reclaiming the center. While clearly these are useful political questions, they reach an impasse, which Zizek's work while (he claims) is in favor of immigration and open borders, correctly raises some anxieties about the politics of life from a completely different perspective. This is what I want to explore in this paper, what does Zizek's work make possible in thinking beyond the ideological way that the 'politics of life' has been framed, thus opening up discourses that have been 'set' by a limited 'post/de-colonial-biopolitical' set of signifiers, which to my reading of Zizek, he is right to point out, have become the 'master'-signifiers in the ideological matrices of how the question of life is currently framed. A person is born free but he does not have this freedom to choose his death. Suicide is a deliberate act of killing of oneself. Suicide as such is not a crime but when an attempt is taken it can be considered as one under Section 309 of Indian Penal Code. The debate round the corner is whether attempt to commit suicide should be punished or not. A person was aware of the outcome of committing suicide, still knowingly takes an attempt. Suicide as a problem is the mixture of social, psychological, philosophical, moral, ethical and legal reasons behind it. An act of suicide requires grave awareness because there is nothing an ordinary prudent man fears more than his death, and that fear in the huge majority of cases, is as logical as it is inevitable. This paper has drawn the attention towards the ongoing debate of retaining or deleting Section 309 by testing its validity on the ground of Article 21 of the constitution of India which provides right to life as a fundamental right. A multi-objective particle swarm optimization based on cooperative hybrid strategy (CHSPSO) is presented in this paper to solve complex multi-objective problems. Most algorithms usually contain only one strategy, which makes them unable to trade off the convergence and diversity when solving the complex multi-objective problems. The proposed cooperative hybrid strategy can effectively guarantee the convergence and the diversity of the algorithm. The multi-population strategy and the dynamic clustering strategy are employed to improve the convergence and the diversity. At the same time, the life strategy and lottery probability selection strategy are used to further ensure the diversity of the population. A series of test functions are used to verify the effectiveness of CHSPSO. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with other evolutionary algorithms. The results show that CHSPSO can obtain a better convergence and diversity for the complex multi-objective problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The task of the paper is two-fold. The author is reading Mira Marcinów's book upon recognition of its importance in two debates; that on the subject of madness and its conditions, and that on Poland and its character, i.e. the specificity of Polish melancholy. The author is reading the book to reflect upon the status of melancholy in culture and its unique position. In this endeavour, author attempt to recognize the structure of the melancholic subject and its problematics. Above all, he wonder whether the melancholic has no doubts about his life. Almas Khan-e Kanoule'ei is one of the famous Kurd poets in the twelfth century A.H. Although researchers have frequently pointed to his literary works, no careful research has so far been done on his life and poetry. Almas Khan-e Kanoule'ei is famous for the lyrics ascribed to him. This paper, is an attempt to criticize the views of researchers based on the manuscripts that belong to Almas Khan for certain, and reveal some of his opinion and beliefs. Outstanding subjects dealt with in this paper are his name, pseudonym, descent, date of birth and death, place of birth and burial, and his beliefs. Finally, his manuscripts in the libraries of Iran and the world are introduced.

This paper builds on my previous work, “God in Public: A Prolegomena to Public Theology in the Romanian Context,” where I made an argument for the need of public theology in the Romanian context and offered a brief introduction to the nature of this new field. Now I present several issues that would need attention in a public theology in our context. One such issue, to begin with, is the atrophy of the capacity for dreaming, for envisioning a better world, of the capacity for imagination and hope. Most of people living through the difficult period of a long transition period, with such a high rate of corruption, poverty and uncertainty, have lost any hope for a positive social change. There are no solid institutions and structures in these young democracies and people are really struggling to live a normal life. Similarly, other crucial dimensions of life have been downplayed and so in need to be recovered, such as work, family, civil society, justice, to name just a few. It is argued that a public theology for Romania and for the entire region of Central and Eastern Europe would need to address exactly these kinds of issues: a vision for a better world, Christianity and nation-building, faith and work, faith and society. The paper concludes by pointing to several example of platforms that are very promising for public theology.

In this paper, I will consider, from a number of philosophical and real‐life perspectives, what happens to us when we fall ill and what the experience of falling ill tells us about the nature of our being. I will take up the oft used Myth of the Cave from Plato's Republic and use this as a means to interpret the experience of falling ill. Plato gave us the allegory to show that what we think we know might not be all there is to know and that what we take for truth may not, at least, be the whole truth. I will argue that The Myth of the Cave provides an allegorical basis for coming to understand ourselves as finite and mortal through the experience of illness. We emerge from the dark safety of our everyday lives into the world of illness; this brings us up short as we come face to face with our own mortality. To make the argument, I will use examples from my own experience of illness and some of those other which have been recounted to me. I will also refer to the work of Havi Carel on illness and mortality, the conception of illness as leading to a feeling of not‐being‐at‐home with our bodies (unheimlich) discussed by Frederick Svenaeus, and Gadamer's notion of illness as a loss of equilibrium. Underpinning the argument throughout will be Heidegger's existential analysis of dying in which he discusses the experience of anxiety and the way that separates us from the world of involvements. In this paper, we examine the use of the term 'life' in the debates within and about synthetic biology. We review different positions within these debates, focusing on the historical background, the constructive epistemology of laboratory research and the pros and cons of metaphorical speech. We argue that 'life' is used as buzzword, as folk concept, and as theoretical concept in inhomogeneous ways. Extending beyond the review of the significant literature, we also argue that 'life' can be understood as a Burstword in two concrete senses. Firstly, terms such as life easily turn into fuzzy, foggy and buzzy clouds of nonsense, if their use is not appropriately reflected. In these cases, the semantic orientation is detonated. This is the Burstword I characteristic of the concept of 'life' that we reveal for its unclear terminological use. Secondly, and in contrast to Burstword I, we show that the concept of 'life' can be used in a methodologically controlled way. We call this kind of use Burstword II. Here the concept of 'life' fulfils the function of expanding an inadequately narrow disciplinary or conceptual focus in different discursive contexts. In this second sense, 'life' receives an important operational function, for instance as a transdisciplinary research principle. It turns out that the innovative function and paradigm-changing power of metaphorical speech belong here as well. In this paper, I make the case for risks and burdens of morality and meaning. Recognizing such risks and burdens would require many of us to expand how we think about the imposition of risks and burdens. As I take it, if such an expansion helps us make more sense of relevant cases and helps us clarify or resolve debates for which risks and burdens are relevant, then it is well-motivated. Accordingly, I will demonstrate the relevance of my proposed expansion to recent philosophical discussion on the ethics of procreation and provide a series of cases which my proposed expansion makes more sense of than an unexpanded account of risks and burdens and. The aim of this paper is to show how the dialogical form is an essential structure of the Platonic texts in which the interrogative form is the very form of philosophy. According to the intentio auctoris, the dialogues can change the lives of their readers and this can only happen thanks to the readers' internalization of the dialogical form as an interrogative structure. Like Socrates' interlocutors in the dialogues, readers with the dialogues, can change their live making it coherent with their own thoughts examined through the philosophical discourse. Aim: The aim of the paper was to investigate the relationship between the level of the sense of meaning life and mental wellbeing as well as the fear of missing out in relation to gender, social class and family affluence. Method: The study used data from a pilot study conducted in Poland in 2017 before the main HBSC 2018 survey (Health Behaviour in School-aged Children). An anonymous survey was conducted in lower-secondary schools, in accordance with the international HBSC research protocol. The analyses were performed in a group of 539 students (46% of girls) attending grades 1-3 of lowersecondary schools (mean age 14.75 ± 0.99 years). The following tools were used in this research: Fear of Missing Out Scale (FOMO), Purpose in Life Test (PiL), Well-Being Index (WHO-5), and Family Affluence Scale (FAS). The results of univariate non-parametric analyses concerning the mean level of the above indices were presented. A generalised linear model for FOMO as a dependent variable was used with stepwise introduction of variables as a part of multivariate analysis. Results: Students with a high level of PiL showed a much higher life satisfaction and a lower level of FOMO than those with a low level of PiL. PiL increased in more affluent families. A significant correlation between PiL and FOMO was found in both genders, while a significant correlation between PiL and WHO-5 was shown only in girls. In the final model, only PiL was found to be a significant predictor of FOMO, while gender, grade, WHO-5 and FAS were rejected. Conclusions: Our study has some practical implications, such as how to avoid problematic social media use. Classes devoted to the meaning of life and the place in life should be organised. What is understanding? My goal in this paper is to lay out a new approach to this question and clarify how that approach deals with certain issues. The claim is that understanding is a matter of compressing information about the understood so that it can be mentally useful. On this account, understanding amounts to having a representational kernel and the ability to use it to generate the information one needs regarding the target phenomenon. I argue that this ambitious new account can accommodate much of the data that has motivated theories of understanding in philosophy of science, and can also be generally applicable in epistemology and daily life as well. Objective: Extending research on the incremental validity of life story variables and the importance of particular kinds of story contexts, this paper tested the hypothesis that a single theme (narrative redemption) in a specific life story episode (the low point-or an episode that challenges the self) can predict well-being, above and beyond covariates.Method: Two samples, an emerging adult (N = 144) and a late midlife sample (N = 158), provided life story episodes with different life story collection methods (written and interview) and completed self-report measures concurrently and longitudinally.Results: The findings indicated that low point redemption was associated concurrently and longitudinally with well-being when controlling for the Big Five factors of Extraversion and Neuroticism and narrative word count. These associations held for three months among emerging adults and four years among late midlife adults. Aggregating redemption in high and low points did not improve the concurrent or longitudinal association between redemption and well-being.Conclusions: The findings demonstrate the capacity of elements in a single challenging episode of the life story to predict well-being. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to focus on individuals who experience mental health difficulties with the services they receive from "support workers" as part of a personal recovery model, this study will obtain individuals reflections, experiences and opinions on how support helps them stay well and facilitates their personal recovery process. Recovery is seen through the lens of the CHIME framework (Connectedness–Hope–Identity–Meaning–Empowerment). Design/methodology/approach: The sample size included 13 people who experience mental health difficulties and are receiving support from mental health care services. The structured interview was designed based on the INSPIRE measurement and the CHIME framework structure. The qualitative content analyses, discursive framing approach and CHIME as a framework made it possible to examine the key activities of recovery-oriented support work revealed in the data. Findings: Participants valued the enhancement of hope provided by support workers and also expressed it was important as they were non-judgemental. Identity and meaning in recovery could be enhanced by sharing powerful stories about the individuals' own life and health experiences, and those of support workers or others. Inclusive behaviour in public spaces and trying out new interest-based activities together were considered as empowering. Originality/value: This research helps to understand the value of personal recovery support activities given the societal changes (tension between survival vs self-expression values) and highlights the need for value-based recovery-oriented education and practice. If life ever evolved on the surface of Mars, it is unlikely that it would still survive there today, but as Mars evolved from a wet planet to an arid one, the subsurface environment may have presented a refuge from increasingly hostile surface conditions. Since the last glacial maximum, the Mojave Desert has experienced a similar shift from a wet to a dry environment, giving us the opportunity to study here on Earth how subsurface ecosystems in an arid environment adapt to increasingly barren surface conditions. In this paper, we advocate studying the vadose zone ecosystem of the Mojave Desert as an analogue for possible subsurface biospheres on Mars. We also describe several examples of Mars-like terrain found in the Mojave region and discuss ecological insights that might be gained by a thorough examination of the vadose zone in these specific terrains. Examples described include distributary fans (deltas, alluvial fans, etc.), paleosols overlain by basaltic lava flows, and evaporite deposits.

This paper discusses the difficulties associated with loss, grief and healing in the time of COVID-19 pandemic. This paper further adds the importance of accompaniment to people experiencing the complicated grief process. Scientific theories about the origin-of-life theories have historically been characterized by the chicken-and-egg problem of which essential aspect of life was the first to appear, replication or self-sustenance. By the 1950s the question was cast in molecular terms and DNA and proteins had come to represent the carriers of the two functions. Meanwhile, RNA, the other nucleic acid, had played a capricious role in origin theories. Because it contained building blocks very similar to DNA, biologists recognized early that RNA could store information in its linear sequences. With the discovery in the 1980s that RNA molecules were capable of biological catalysis, a function hitherto ascribed to proteins alone, RNA took on the role of the single entity that could act as both chicken and egg. Within a few years of the discovery of these catalytic RNAs (ribozymes) scientists had formulated an RNA World hypothesis that posited an early phase in the evolution of life where all key functions were performed by RNA molecules. If we eventually discover extraterrestrial life, do we have any moral obligations for how to treat the life-forms we find; does it matter whether they are intelligent, sentient, or just microbial-and does it matter that they are extraterrestrial? In this paper, I examine these questions by looking at two of the basic questions in moral philosophy: What does it take to be a moral object? and What has value of what kind? I will start with the first of these questions by looking at the most important attempts to answer this question on our own planet and by asking whether and how they could be applied to extraterrestrial life. The results range from a very strong protection of all extraterrestrial life and all extraterrestrial environments, whether inhabited or not, to total exclusion of extraterrestrial life. Subsequently, I also examine whether extraterrestrial life that lacks moral status can have value to human or alien life with moral status, and if that could generate any obligations for how to treat extraterrestrial life. Based on this analysis, I conclude that extraterrestrial life-forms can have both instrumental value and end value to moral objects, which has strong implications for how to treat them.
