1. Recommendations Concerning Employment, Income, and Educational Opportunities for the Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes in Florida. Final Ecological Report.

Abstract

A part of the South Florida Environmental Project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs, this project commenced on July 1, 1971, and ended on December 31, 1972. Phase I provided a comprehensive history of Seminole and Miccosukee Indian tribal development; Phase II produced an overall view of the growth of the South Florida region and the potential impact on Indians in the area. In Phase III, which is reported in this paper, the research team concentrated on estimating present and future employment and income opportunities for the tribes, as well as a general reservation land use forecast to the year 2000. To assist the tribes in developing economic and educational plans, development plans for South Florida lands abutting the reservation areas, including the possible location of a jetport, were given. Additionally, a set of general educational recommendations was prepared for the tribes to develop programs for school aged children, adult education, and vocational-technical training. (KM)

Abstract

From its ancestral home in Indo-Burma, the mango was spread into the Western Hemisphere by the Portuguese and Spanish during the period of exploration and discovery. It was brought into Florida over a century ago and, through intermittent periods of wax and wane, mango production has become concentrated on the crestal portions of a Pleistocene limestone surface in southeastern Dade County. The Pleistocene surface, however, is also highly valued for residential development, and the mango groves are gradually being converted to urban land use. Although the groves are being displaced, many trees are retained in the urban setting and continue to produce fruit for the commercial market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article focuses on the book "Cincinnati's Beginnings," written by Francis W. Miller. This book is rather a history of the "Miami Purchase" than of Cincinnati. Of the nine chapters of the body of the work wily the two last may be said to be devoted to "Cincinati's Beginnings." The first seven chapters give a pretty full and connected account of the origin and progress of the first attempt to plant settlements of white people in what was then known as the "Miami country." The quantity of land between the two Miami Rivers proved to be much less than was at first supposed, and Symmes never paid and received patents for more than about six hundred thousand acres.
