This article presents information regarding literary activities. An edition of the "Works of John Marston," the Elizabethan poet and dramatist, is announced as in progress at Boston. It will contain his dramatic works and poems, "with some account of the author and his writings, and numerous illustrative notes, by F.F. Heard and William F. Fowle. Few purely literary questions depending for their solution on external and circumstantial evidence have been more summarily and satisfactorily set tied than the point lately raised by Herman Merivale on the authenticity of the correspondence known to antiquarians and historians as "The Paston Letters."

Copper mining in its prehistoric bearing is treated with care and described with minute details by the author, who has visited in person the greatest copper-bearing region in the world, the shores and environs of Lake Superior.

Shackleton's book comes very opportunely to divert minds from some of the less pleasant associations that have lately surrounded polar exploration, while at the same time it helps people to realize the amazing courage and powers of endurance which the exploration of either Arctic or Antarctic region demands. It carries us into a part of the globe far less familiar to most of people than are the northern circumpolar islands and seas.

Lieutenant E.H. Shackleton's extraordinary success in approaching to within 111 miles of the South Pole, in spite of great hardships and suffering, will take a prominent place in the history of polar exploration. The journey across the ice of 1,708 miles, occupying 126 days, without any accident or fatality, is in itself a remarkable exploit. The rarefied air, combined with a temperature of 72 degrees of frost, made it almost a miracle that the party could progress at all. Yet with this cruel experience behind them, the men were compelled to turn back with an apparently unbroken and inviting plain stretching to the southward as far as they could see.
