Experiences at the Gastroenterological Services of "Hospital Universitario and Carlos J. Bellos Hospital" are reported. In these institutions 100 trans-parietohepatic cholangiographies were carried out during the years 1959-1965 with the following results: cholangiograms were positive in 85 per cent and there has been good correlation between radiologic diagnosis and operative results (19 per cent incidence of cholelithiasis and 75 per cent of carcinoma of the bile ducts). Two cases of cystic dilatation of the common bile duct and two eases of ehronic pancreatitis were found. The cystic dilatation of the common bile duet was diagnosed in each case by radiology prior to surgical intervention. Three patients developed bile peritonitis, three hemorrhage, and one shock. Two fatalities due to hemorrhage occurred. The occurrence of these complications support the view that this procedure should be reserved for cases of where precise diagnosis has not been possible with the more conventional (and less hazardous) diagnostic methods at our disposal, and that it should be performed immediately prior to surgery.
