The section presents a paper on U.S. approximations to the Industry Council idea, delivered at the Sixteenth Annual American Catholic Sociological Society Convention, held from December 28 to 30, 1954 at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. The National Bureau for Lathing and Plastering, faced with competition of dry wall construction, was founded in 1954 to promote the use of plaster and laths. Similar relations exist between the Wallpaper Institute and the United Wallpaper Craftsmen to curb imports and to promote the sale of wall paper. The National Coordinating Committee of the Beverage Industry was founded in 1950. The Nationwide Committee of Industry, Agriculture and Labor on Import-Export Policy, launched in 1953, claims to represent 125 national organizations, including manufacturers, trade associations, and unions. The Foreign Oil Policy Committee was set up to halt the importation of crude oil. The Independent Advisory Committee to the Trucking Industry, established in 1953, is made up of representatives from all branches of the trucking industry, including the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Formed in 1949, the Motion Picture Industry Council represents guilds, unions and management groups in the film industry. Two other organizations which represent branches of their respective industry have only limited or indirect participation by unions: the Council of Motion Picture Organizations; and the Federation for Railway Progress, founded in 1947 by Robert R. Young. The Millinery Stabilization Commission and the National Coat and Suit Industry Recovery Board, were inspired by the National Recovery Act.

The purpose of this paper is to suggest a generalized formulation of one set of generic conditions that strongly motivate a scientist to participate in the goal-reward pattern of science. These conditions are the differential associations of the scientist with colleagues who guide his induction into science, colleagues who continually make known to the scientist that it is his job to advance knowledge. The impact of these differential associations on generating degree and firmness of motivation to advance knowledge varies according to their diversity of scope but not to the duration of the associations. Our own Kenneth Boulding, in The Organizational Revolution, profoundly observed the rapid growth of "associations" of one form or another; and with that insight, peculiar to economists, commented on the many factors that accounted for this phenomenon. There were "supply and demand" elements, and all of them contributed to the overall pattern that made for more and more organizations. The American Finance Association is one of these, and is currently a robust thirty years of age--in the prime of life--and the proud parent of its illustrious offspring, The Journal of Finance, now beginning its twenty-fifth volume. Most members, and there are currently more than 5,000 members and subscribers of various categories, are only dimly aware, at best, of the beginnings and evolution of the Association, for no formal history has ever been printed. The article focuses on the sociological investigation. On the one hand the investigator feels required to present as much detail about his workshop or community as possible so that his research can be subjected to the critical scrutiny of his colleagues; at the same time the presentation of such detail can only make it more likely that the precise location of the community under investigation can be discovered and named by an enterprising journalist. The role of the participant observer in the research situation has already received considerable attention. Yet, while the pursuit of sociological research has the exploitative element in it and involves the definition of the research 'others' as the 'objects' of research, this does not mean that these 'others' will necessarily respond in an undifferentiated way. The "British Association Scandal" was a social drama which enabled the actors to define or redefine themselves in relation to the department as a whole and in relation to each other.

The article presents information on minutes of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society's council meeting which was held on September 20, 1968 at Pick Congress Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. President William D'Antonio called the meeting to order. The minutes of the last council meeting were approved as corrected. There was discussion of the minutes of the executive committee meeting with the officers of the Midwest Sociological Society. There was discussion of the paper competition. The status of the student when the paper is completed will determine which contest it is entered in. This competition may include honors work and special projects as well as papers for courses. The following motion was made and unanimously passed. The editor of Sociological Focus may set up a special account to handle income and the expense of editing the journal. The editor is to give an accounting of this money to the Publications Committee, and this accounting is to be included in the Publications Committee's report to the council. A membership drive will take place utilizing the state chairmen. Reimbursement of mailing costs to the membership committee was authorized.

The article presents report of the membership committee of the American Sociological Society. The lucid report of the executive officer of the Society provides a sharp perspective for the membership committee's activities during the past year and for its task in the year ahead. Inflation of costs combined with the failure of the profession as a whole to share proportionately in an increase of income works in a vicious circle in its effect upon the growth of the Society. During the past year the Society has continued its growth. As of August 20th, the total membership stood at 4,008, having passed the four thousand mark for the first time in an official report. One year ago, in August 1951, the membership of the Society numbered 3,906. There has therefore been a net gain of 102. Thus the rate of expansion reported in 1950 and in 1951 has not been maintained, although the Society has grown about three per cent during the past year. The work of the membership committee during the past year has been subject to at least two limiting conditions.

The relationship between the democratic state and other associations of its citizenry has been the subject of theorizing and philosophizing from the very beginnings of modern democratic thought in the 17th century. The early discussion focused primarily on sovereignty and natural rights. Tocqueville, an adherent to the latter point of view, is an early source for the subsidiary thesis that secondary associations also serve the important function of drawing their participants into the life of the general society. Restated in terms of voluntary associations and the political arena by the writers is the focus of this paper. The thesis specifies a dynamic relationship in which participation in voluntary associations is the independent variable, political activity the dependent variable, with the general society the context for both. The analysis focuses on those adults who in the period 1948-1949 voluntarily affiliated themselves with the Association by contributing one or more of the following: money,property, personal service. Individuals who contributed money, property, or both, but not personal service, are here called financial participants.

The Professional Qualifications subcommittee of the Society's Committee on Organization held a meeting at Hotel Philadelphian in Philadelphia, September 17. The American Statistical Association is planning a Centenary celebration at the coming annual meeting. Cornell University and New York State College of Agriculture's department of rural social organization name has been changed to rural sociology. The conference of International Institute of Sociological Societies, which was originally scheduled for August, has been postponed to the Easter season of 1940. This postponement was made at the request of several participants due to the international situation. The second annual meeting of the Committee for Conceptual Integration would be held during the meeting of the American Sociological Society at Philadelphia in December.

Emphasis is placed on the importance of analyzing organizational structure and behavior in terms of environmental variables, arid this research employs environmental variables drawn from the normative order of the surrounding society. The concept of "constituting norms" I. used to identify those norms which are central to the society's conception of appropriate organizational forms. Several constituting norms associated with American society are identified, and their impact on the formal organization of American churches is demonstrated. This paper conc it s with the formulation of several propositions which specify: many conditions in which religious organizations should be most and least susceptible to pressures from constituting norms. This paper compares the perceptions of county agricultural committee members with those of county extension agents as to general objectives and specific roles of county extension workers in thirty Wisconsin counties. County committee members tend to view the agents more as "generalists" and as persons performing services for groups and associations in the county than do the agents themselves. The ordering of types of activities on the basis of importance in "getting the job done" by committee members tends to agree more with the ordering by agricultural agents than by home agents or 4-H Club agents. County agricultural committee members tend to define the roles of county extension workers in terms of local needs and interests rather than in terms of sectional, state, or national problems. There is general consensus between agents and committee members with respect to their relationships in program planning but not in administrative matters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reports on the 1969 annual Western Speech Association Convention. Schedule; Venue; Section programs.

The section presents a paper read at the Seventeenth Annual Convention of the American Catholic Sociological Society (ACSS), held from December 28 to 30, 1955 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Industry Council Committee of the ACSS has been active holding meetings, issuing reports, and conducting discussions in an effort designed to stimulate thinking and action on the Papal Plan for Social Reconstruction. Two projects emerged. The first was a book. "Industrialism and the Popes," by Mary Lois Eberdt. The second project was a 200-page duplicated booklet containing answers to some 140 questions which had come to the committee. A by-product of this project, or perhaps it should be called a third project, is the publication of a 40 to 50-page pamphlet on "What Is the Industry Council Idea?" To date, three groups have been established, to study, respectively: the binding force of the encyclicals; techniques for teaching the encyclicals and the Industry Council Idea; and labor-management relations. The committee has faced problems or dilemma. On the organizational side, there is the problem of getting a committee which is representative. Another dilemma has been the question whether the committee should concentrate on the theoretical or the practical aspects of the Industry Council Idea. A third dilemma has been a sort of feeling in regard to arriving at satisfactory answers at the same time that have been besieged by many to give specific answers to questions that have not answered or have not even raised. Still another dilemma has been the fact that interdisciplinary research is necessary. The financial dilemma, of course, faces all organizations.

This article presents information on the report of the Program Committee of the American Sociological Society, as of February 2, 1942. In accordance with the report of the special Committee on Programs, which was adopted at the 1940 meeting, the present Program Committee has avoided dinner and luncheon meetings. It has arranged three general sessions "devoted to vital subjects of interest to all." It has urged upon section chairmen use of the data assembled by the Committee on Research and has invited all members of the Society to submit brief papers for consideration by section chairmen. Because the number of sections has grown to sixteen, each section has been limited to one session. This has made it impossible to follow one part of last year's report, namely, that one session of each section be devoted to brief papers on recent research. Because the committee has sixteen sections besides three special conferences it is evident that the whole structure of the program needs further revision. Not merely the large number but also the vague delineation of fields indicates the urgency of a general revamping of the whole system of sections.

The article presents information related to the Southwestern Social Science Association. Professor J. Linus Glanville, Second Vice-President of the Association, at Dallas, died on November 18. Glanville was one of the southwest's outstanding historical scholars and has been an active supporter of the Association for many years. The Executive Council of the Association announced that the 1948 meeting will be held at the Baker Hotel in Dallas, on March 26-27. The Executive Council will hold its preliminary session on the evening of March 25. Five new panel sections have been selected for the 1948 meeting of the Southwestern Sociological Society. Members of the society who will have projects for review in the spring are asked to advise the section chairman in whose panel the papers might appear. Society members are also asked to inform section chairmen if they are aware of possible papers from other members of their departments or other members of their faculties. Section chairmen are particularly interested in giving scholars who have recently moved into the Southwest full opportunity to participate in these sessions.

The article reports on the acquisition of the journal "The Plant World" by the Ecological Society of America in the U.S. It says that the acquired journal bears the title "Ecology". The acquisition made the journal as the organ of the Society and will publish papers both on plant and animal ecology. Furthermore, the Plant World journal has always published several ecological papers, and its successor, the Ecology journal may now be expected to become one of the main outlets for American ecological work.

The article announces the publication of the new international journal in probability theory. The journal which provides information on the theories of probability is designed to offer additional learning relative to various branches of sciences such as biological, physical, social and technological sciences. Its publication is made possible by the cooperation of the Applied Probability Trust and the London Mathematical Society. Moreover, the distribution will be made through volumes consisting of about 300 pages per year that will particularly offer data on the field of applied probability, research papers and short communications. Furthermore, information on the subscription of its volume together with the privileges offered are posted.

The article focuses on original versus microphotographed editions of documents. At the 75th Annual Meeting of the American Library Association held in Chicago in July, 1951, the Public Documents Committee decided to devote a session to the consideration of the problems of original versus microphotographed editions of documents. In order to provide a definite and useful delimitation of the field, Government documents were selected as the central theme. The meeting was extremely successful and through the cooperation of Mrs. V. A. Cabeen, Chairman of the Public Documents Committee, publication of all of the papers as a unit has been arranged.

The 1959 Annual Meeting of the Society will be held at the Edgewater Beach Hotel, Chicago, Illinois, September 3, 4 and 5. Joint sessions are being arranged with the American Anthropological Association, the Rural Sociological Society and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. The following sections and chairmen have been arranged by President Kingsley Davis. In order to provide the growing membership with the widest opportunity to participate in the annual program, each person is allowed to read only one paper if he is the sole author, and to contribute to two programs only if he is joint author in each case or is a chairman or discussant in one case. The sessions planned by the Program Committee promise to be original, challenging and informative. A special effort is being made at this meeting to improve the process of communication in the sessions. Also, a feature of the Chicago conference is that certain sessions will be devoted to sociology as a profession and to the advancement of the interests and position of sociologists.

Six years ago, as part of the general reorganization of the American Sociological Society, the Executive Office was set up and given two major mandates. First, to aid in the strengthening and expansion of the Society's activities and services to members, and second, to build toward a financially sound operating position. During these six years, the Society has gone through a period of rapid expansion both of activities and of income and expenditures, followed by a period of consolidation. In regard to the financial aspect of the original mandate, the Society's present position seems relatively secure. The long-term effort to establish a sound financial position for the Society seems, at this point, to have been successful. This position is further bulwarked by the Society's reserves, which, in addition to a substantial operating fund, include some $35,000 worth of securities and savings. The growth in income from non-member subscribers to the Review follows a similar pattern. This is the second largest single source of the Society's income, now representing about 18 percent of the total. Here again there has been an increase, from $5,000 in 1949 to $10,000 in 1954. On the expenditure side of the balance sheet. publication costs constitute by far the major portion. Here the largest single item is the cost of printing and mailing the journal "American Sociological Review".

This article presents information about the book "The Paradise Within Reach of All Men, Without Labour by Powers of Nature and Machinery," by J.A. Etzler. In a series of brief imaginative sketches he outlined means whereby the winds, the tides, the waves, and the heat of the sun could be harnessed to supplant the labor of man. His conception was symbolized in the phrase "re-acting power," by which he meant that natural forces, once harnessed, would need very little superintendence. Thus the heat of the sun, captured and concentrated in great burning mirrors' would enable foundries and vitrifying establishments to operate continuously, producing the machines and prefabricated buildings for the paradise. He also envisaged the utilization of natural substances, like wood, for food, and the manufacture of synthetic fibres. Etzler envisaged four phases in this great change. The first would involve the organization of an association to collect funds and sponsor a pilot community on the Atlantic seaboard. The second would see the successful operation of the experiment.
