After giving a short account of the more important papers submitted to Section C. (Geology), Mr. Murdoch referred to those bearing on two subjects which were of more than usual interest, viz., the age of the Elgin Sandstones and the succession of the North-West Highland Rocks. The papers which introduced the former subject were—“The Elgin Sandstones,” by Mr. J. G. Phillips, keeper of the Elgin Museum; and “On a new Reptile from New Spynie,” by Dr. R. H. Traquair, F.R.S.E., Museum of Science and Art, Edinburgh. Curiously enough, these Yellow Elgin Sandstones had been a subject of great contention at the previous meeting in Aberdeen—that of 1859—and now their age, which had been thought to be then finally settled, again came up for discussion at the meeting of 1885. Up till 1852 there had been no question that these rocks were of undoubted Old Red Sandstone age, but in that year Mr. Patrick Duff of Elgin discovered in them the remains of a lizard ( Telerpeton ), while in 1859 Prof. Huxley found in the collection of the Rev. Dr. Gordon of Birnie, from the same strata, crocodilian remains ( Stagonolepis ) and those of another lizard ( Hyperodapedon ); and at the recent meeting Dr. Traquair reported the discovery of another form of lizard (which he named provisionally Dicynodon ). The discovery of these reptilians, all of Triassic age, was supposed to finally settle the question, and the Elgin sandstones were therefore classed as belonging to the New Red formation, when lately in the same horizon

A Government grant by the Royal Society enabled me to spend the months of August and September of 1889, in the investigation of unknown or obscure points in the marine algæ, in the Laboratory of the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth. One of my chief objects was to obtain such material of the various members of the Gigartinaceæ, of Spyridia, Stenogramme, and other genera, as would permit me to make a detailed examination of the development of the fruit (cystoearp) from the earliest stage to maturity. Several of the genera required were very rare or of unknown locality, and in many cases only to be found by dredging. In searching for these, new weeds, or new localities for known weeds, were met with, and it seemed to me the notes I made would be of use to algologists. Cocks, Hore, Boswarva, Gatcombe, &c, and of late years Holmes, have combined in their work to give a very full account of the marine algæ to be met with without the use of the dredge. For twenty years Cocks, I am told, did not miss a single low tide at Plymouth (or, if not, Falmouth). Up to the present our knowledge of the weeds of Plymouth has been derived almost entirely from shore-hunting, some of the rarest weeds being described as washed ashore, so that it was a question as to whether such weeds were locally established or merely “drift” specimens. In 1867 Boswarva published his Flora of Plymouth Sound in the Transactions of the Plymouth Athenaeum, his catalogue being compiled from the discoveries of himself, Cocks, &c. This list appears word for word in the Marine Biological Association Journal, No. 2, 1888. I am permitted by Mr. Holmes to say that through a misunderstanding he is stated to give the names of eight additional species.

A LL the hills in the immediate vicinity of Porto Alegre appear to be formed of granite or porphyry, but I had no opportunity to note the geological features closely. The strips of woodland which remain are less matted than the forests of Rio de Janeiro, and there are fewer vines and palm-trees; ferns are abundant, and we collected a score of species. One of the commonest birds here was a brown species allied to the thrushes, and called, *7oao de barro-literally, clay-John. It owes this name to its singular nest, which is composed entirely of clay, and roofed over above; it is frequently placed in the most exposed situations, such as the tops of fence-posts, or the dead branches of trees. They are very tame, and I have frequently watched a pair of them at work. They bring the material, soft, unctuous clay, in good sized lum1ps, which they obtain near some water-course; these lumps, previously well kneaded, are laid first on the post or branch on which the nest is to be built, so as to form a foundation; each portion is well packed in with the bill, which is subsequently used like a trowel to smooth the surface. The sides are built up in the same way, the two birds working incessantly for several days; they seem to prefer rainy or foggy weather, when the wet clay can readily be found, and when the building is not hindered by the too rapid drying of the parts which are already finished. The nest, when completed, is nearly globular, seven or eight inches in diameter, and with walls an inch and a half thick; the cavity may be compared to a mold of a very crooked squash, the larger end forming the nest, and the smaller, turned downwards, the entrance. The clay soon becomes nearly as hard as brick, and the nests may last for many years, though I do not know that the birds use them more than once. In Rio Grande I found the birds breeding in June; three dirty white eggs a~re laid. This, or a closely allied species is found throughout Southern and Central Brazil. A gallinaceous bird called perdiz (partridge) was also common on the grassy hillsides. Its plumage, prettily mottled with brown, is one of the best examples of protective coloration that I have

In writing Part I. of the British Museum Catalogue of Fossil Reptilia, in which a large number of forms are known solely by disjecta membra, I was fully prepared to find that many of my determinations, which are frequently provisional, would subsequently need correction. It is, moreover, highly probable that there are really more species represented in the collection than I have indicated, as in some cases, in my desire to avoid the introduction of new specific or generic names which could not be fully substantiated, I have provisionally included under generic or specific headings specimens which may prove to indicate distinct forms.

IN CERTAIN. sections of Louisiana after the backwater from the Atchafalaya and Ouchita Rivers receded this past spring (1937), an unusual deposit of thick, cobwebby, or, in many cases, paper-like material was seen hanging from weeds and other vegetation in the areas which had been flooded. The amount of this deposit was variable in different locations. In one section just north of Jonesville, Louisiana, the deposit was so great as to attract unusual attention. In this section the paper-like deposit not only clung to vegetation, but covered the ground and fences, making certain fields appear as though they were blanketed with snow (fig. 1-3). The inhabitants in the vicinity where the accumulation was abundant were so attracted by the phenomenon that a sample of the material was sent in on April 17, 1937, to the Botany Department, Louisiana State IUniversity, for identification. Microscopic examination of the white paper-like tissue revealed that it was composed of unbranched filaments interwoven very similarly to the fibers of lens paper (fig. 4). These fila'ments appeared to be of algal origin, but since no cell contents (protoplasts) were present, definite determination could not be made. In order to make a positive identification, the writer made a trip to Jonesville. In several places along the roadside en route the material was noted-first, where the backwater from the Atchafalaya River had receded sou-th of Melville and again along Little River east of Pollock. Just north of Jonesville, where the -greatest display was noted, a study revealed what probably had happened. The particular field in question had been planted in cotton the previous year, and the old stalks, which were three to four feet in height,' were still standing during the inundation. At the peak of the rise the 'water probably was four or five feet in depth over the field and contained a luxuriant growth of free-floating filamentous algae. There was evidence of a flow of water over this area, and apparently as the water p'assed through the branches of cotton stalks, weeds, and wire fences, the algal filaments were

In looking over the ‶Transactions″ of this Society, I find no reference in any of the Carboniferous papers, specially treating on fossils, as to the genera of gasteropod mollusca that characterise the limestone strata of the Lothians and eastern coal-fields of Scotland. It has therefore occurred to me that a short paper, pointing out the genera that have been found in the central and western coal-fields of Scotland, might be of some interest to those members forming collections of Carboniferous fossils, and might also induce some of them to put upon record the species of gasteropoda that they know to have been found in the districts around Edinburgh, for the sake of comparison with those obtained from other parts of the country. In doing this for the central and western coal-fields, I shall first point out the conditions under which the gasteropoda are chiefly met with in our beds, and afterwards indicate the genera and species known to me, so far as these have been determined. The Carboniferous gasteropoda found in our limestone strata are all essentially of marine types; no forms belonging to this group have ever yet been met with in beds of lacustrine or estuarine origin, that alternate with the coal strata in the limestone series; nor have any terrestrial, air-breathing, univalve molluscs been met with in any of the strata that are known to have been formed over land surfaces of the Coal period, like those discovered in the Coal-measures of Nova Scotia by Dr Dawson.

On 15th May 1924 Mr. Harold J. E. Peake, F.S.A., read to the Society of Antiquaries a short paper announcing certain new facts regarding this Late Bronze Age hoard that had come to light mainly through research in, or connected with, the Bronze Implements Card Index of the British Association.Two approximately contemporary accounts of the discovery exist, but these contain so many divergences that it was uncertain whether two distinct hoards were referred to, and Sir John Evans, in his Ancient Bronze Implements (1881), numbers and treats of them separately, with a query as to their identity. Our fresh evidence demonstrates that the two descriptions refer to the same group of bronze implements.

The purpose of this short paper is to make available names for two new species of Culicoides which have been submitted by Dr. Colvin L. Gibson, of the Laboratory of Tropical Diseases, National Institutes of Health, while assigned to the Pan American Sanitary Bureau in Guatemala. These species, along with C. guttatus (Coquillett) and C. paraensis (Goeldi), were collected in the area around San Pedro Yepocapa, Department of Chimaltenango, Guatemala, while biting man, and are the subject of a separate report by Dr. Gibson regarding their possible role in the transmission of human onchocerciasis in Guatemala.

Since 1938, I have been attempting an extensive vegetation survey of the state of Georgia with a view to the ultimate preparation of a Flora of Georgia. Although I have been primarily concerned with certain other groups of vascular plants, I have made some observations and collections of pteridophytes with a view to contributing additional material to Rogers McVaugli and J. H. Pyron for their unpublished paper "Ferns of Georgia." Two collections, Equisetum laevigatum A. Br. and Dryopteris Goldiana (Hook.) A. Gray, are of particular interest because they represent range extensions into Georgia.

A comprehensive account is given of the discovery and study of the fossil footprints of vertebrates in the British Isles. Brief summaries are given of work published in journals that are generally available to the geologist at large; however, since many papers were published in obscure books and journals, the illustrations in these are reproduced and the papers themselves directly quoted wherever appropriate. A number of specimens important in the history of British vertebrate ichnology are illustrated for the first time; in particular, the holotype of Chelichnus ingens Binney (1856), the “Kegworth footprint” from Leicestershire, the supposed “monotreme footprint” of Seeley (1899), and the first Iguanodon footprint to be described from Sussex (Tagart, 1846). Illustrations are given for the first time of footprints from the Forest Marble of Wiltshire thought to be those collected by Scrope (1831), of a footprint from the Permian of Warwickshire, mentioned by Vernon (1912), and of a footprint from Caithness. The account is extensively supplemented by text-figures of principal footprint types and, so far as possible, the present whereabouts of figured or described specimens is indicated. (Many, unfortunately, are lost.) An exhaustive bibliography of fossil vertebrate footprints from the British Isles is presented. Particular attention is paid to the important discoveries in the Cheshire Basin by the amateur geologists of the Liverpool region. An account of the work of Henry C. Beasley (1836–1919), the most eminent British worker in this field, is given for the first time; his portrait, and photographs relating to his work in the Storeton quarries, are published for the first time. The stratigraphical and palaeoecological significance of the footprints is assessed wherever possible and reasons are presented why a more extensive resumption of work in this field is desirable.

In this series of papers on the Post-Tertiary Deposits, it has been our desire all along to confine our attention to their fossil remains, and to some facts connected with their inorganic contents, avoiding, as far as possible, the introduction of theoretical matter. This will account for our passing over unnoticed many topics of interest with regard to glacial phenomena. The section now under review has been described by several writers, particularly by Mr. Jamieson in his valuable paper “On the Last Geological Changes in Scotland;”* and by Professor Geikie, in his well-known memoir on the “Phenomena of the Glacial Drift of Scotland,” published in the Transactions of this Society.† The deposit lies at the north-west side of Kilchattan Bay, beyond tide-mark, and dips seaward. Taking the beds in descending order, we find, as represented in the annexed cut:— 1. —Peaty mould: about 1 foot. 2. —Gravel: 3 to 5 feet. 3. —Muddy sand: 4 to 6 feet. 4. —Grey laminated clay: 6 to 7 feet. 5. —Reddish boulder clay: depth unknown. Passing over I. and II., it is in the stratum of muddy sand (III.) that the shells occur, and it is to be observed that they are more abundant therein towards the bottom than near the top. The proportion of sand in this layer is too great for tile-making, and it is therefore laid aside. The prevailing shells of this deposit are Tellina calcarea, Axinus flexuosus, Scrobicularia prismatica, Cyprina Islandica, Mya truncata, and Utriculus obtusus . In the summer of 1910 Dr. S. W. Williston asked the writer to study the Pariotichus skulls in Walker Geological Museum of the University of Chicago to see if they would throw any light on, some of the undecided points concerning the osteology of that genus. The material was fragmentary with the exception of one remarkable specimen of Pariotichus laticeps Williston, a skull of Pariotichus aguti Cope ?, and the base of a skull of an unidentified species. Some of the undecided questions were: Are squamosal and prosquamosal both present? Is there a distinct quadratojugal? What are the homologies of the tabulare, if such a bone is present ? What are the homologies of the so-called epiotics, quadratojugals of Case ? Is a presphenoid present ? and What is the arrangement of the bones in the base of the skull ? The writer's thanks are due Dr. Williston for the use of the specimens and for discussions during the investigation. In a paper published in 1878' Cope gave the name Pariotichus brachyops to an imperfect skull from the Permian of Texas, and later in the same paper described a more perfect skull as Ectocynodon ordinatus. As he supposed that the former had the roof of the skull unsculptured he referred the specimens to different genera. In 1882 he described Ectocynodon aguti2 and in 1888 Ectocynodon incisivus.3 In 1896 he referred all of the Ectocynodonts to Pariotichus and named two more species, P. aduncus4 and P. isolomus.5 In the paper where he named the latter he described

DELEVORYAS, THEODORE. (Yale U., New Haven, Conn.) Investigations of North American cycadeoids: Monanthesia. Amer. Jour. Bot. 46(9) :657-666. Illus. 1959.-A study of the cycadeoid trunks from the Upper Cretaceous Mesaverde formation of northwestern New Mexico, which arr in the collections of the Peabody Museum of Natural History, Yale University, has been completed. These plants had columnar trunks with persistent leaf bases and a cone in the axil of every leaf. The vascular supply of the cone is derived from the fusion of two cortical bundles which arise from two leaf traces, neither of which supplies the subtending leaf. Enough difference appears to exist between these forms and Cycadeoidea to warrant a separate generic designation. Monanthesia is the generic name used, and the single species, M. magnifica, is considered to include all the stems from the New Mexico localities. The pattern of vascularization of cones seems to suggest that they are foliar structures and that Monanthesia is probably a more advanced form than Cycadeoidea. IN THE Carnegie Institution Year Book No. 27 for 1927-28, the late Professor G. R. Wieland reported on cycadeoid collections made in the San Juan Basin in northwestern New Mexico from Upper Cretaceous (Mesaverde) deposits. Most of the trunks originated in the Navajo Indian Reservation in the vicinity of the Chuska Mountains. The trunks collected by Wieland during 1928-29 are part of the extensive cycadeoid collection at the Peabody Museum of Natural History, Yale University. In general, these fossil specimens are not ovoid or spherical, but columnar, and are of interest because of the presence of a fructification, or cone, in the axil of just about every leaf (fig. 1, 2). In the same report, Wieland listed 6 previously described species of Cycadeoidea which he thought had a similar habit. These are: C. dartoni, C. fisherae, C. stantoni, C. masseiana, C. nigra, and C. niobrarensis. It was in this paper that Wieland suggested that these 6 species of cycadeoids, and the newly found New Mexico specimens, might be given a new generic name. At that time he proposed the name Navajoia. However, because the name Navajoia does not meet the requirements for valid publication in Article 36 of the 1956 edition of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, it is a nomen nudun. Furthermore, no formal transfer of the 6 Cycadeoidea species was made. No mention of the name Navajoia was made in subsequent papers by Wieland; in fact, he continued to refer the 6 previously named species to Received for publication March 31, 1959. Cycadeoidea, in spite of his having proposed the name Navajoia for them earlier. In 1934, Wieland introduced the name Monanthesia for the New Mexico specimens. In that paper there is a photograph of a tangential section of the armor of a specimen (text fig. 20) with a brief description of it under the combination M. magnifica. If Monanthesia had been instituted by Wieland as a monotypic genus, this combined generic and specific description would validate the genus according to provisions of Articles 36 and 41 of the Code. However, it is obvious that he had intended to include more than 1 species in Monanthesia because in the same paper (Wieland, 1934; p. 94, 110) Wieland referred to a second species, M. blanca, and included descriptive remarks concerning that species. Thus, the descriptio ganerico-specifica of M. magnifica does not validate the genus Monanthesia. The name Monanthesia was used by Wieland in several subsequent papers (1935, 1936a, 1936b, 1937, 1941), but in none of these is there an unquestionable validation of the genus. Because the New Mexico group of cycadeoids was the least investigated in the Peabody Museum collection, the author initiated a thorough study of the group. An attempt was made to determine whether the New Mexico complex was truly distinct, or whether they were close enough to Cycadeoidea to be included in that genus. In addition, a study of the vascularization of this interesting group was made with the purpose of learning more of the anatomy and evolution of the cycadeoids. GENERAL STRUCTURE.-The columnar trunks of the Mesaverde cycadeoids may reach 70 cm. or more in height, with a diameter of 50 cm. (fig. 1). Seldom are the complete trunks found intact. Many of them are flattened, and the matrix of most of them is coarse, yielding poor structural details. Another difficulty encountered is the fact that the cone peduncles are long and slender, and quite

The collection of lichens forming the basis of the present paper was made by Dr. and Mrs. N. L. Britton and Mr. Percy Wilson in February and March, I916. A few specimens were collected by Dr. 0. E. Jennings in I9ro. The collection is of unusual interest on account of the large representation, 67 numbers in all, of rock-inhabiting lichens. Very little is known about the rock lichens of the West Indies. The only important collection of them, hitherto, was made by W. R. Elliott in the islands of Dominica and St. Vincent in I891 and 1892; an account of Elliott's collections being given by Wainio in the London Journal of Botany for I896. Charles Wright's rich collection of the lichens of Cuba included very few specimens on rocks. This probably accounts, in part at least, for the relatively large number of new species described in this paper. The lichen flora of the Isle of Pines, so far as known at present, includes 49 genera with 127 species, of which I genus, 14 species, and I variety are new. Of the new species, i grow on rocks. Three of the new species are already known from other tropical localities, and until the rock lichens of Cuba are known it is obviously impossible to say how many species are endemic in the Isle of Pines. For the same reason, comparison of the lichen flora of the Isle of Pines with that of other islands in the West Indies would, at present, be valueless. It can be stated, however, that the number of distinctively tropical species is very large. In the following list, localities outside of the Isle of Pines are cited only in cases where the distribution is restricted or little known.

The most important paper on the Pleistocene deposits of the Avon Valley is by H. E. Strickland. This was sent to the Geological Society in June, 1835, and a brief abstract was published; but the paper was first printed in full in 1858. As Jardine states, ‘most of the localities mentioned are now either filled up, worked out, or become otherwise inaccessible,’ and it is a matter of congratulation that so careful and competent an observer as Strickland was a resident in the district, while it is noteworthy that but little has been added to our knowledge since. It is, however, necessary to bring our knowledge up to date, and we thank Miss Tomlinson for submitting her specimens for examination; we also thank Mr. W. H. Edwards of the Victoria Institute, Worcester, for similar courtesy, and Mr. Hugh Watson for assistance with the Strickland Collection now preserved at Cambridge. I. Introduction. This paper deals with the geological structure of the Andes of Central Peru, as represented by a horizontal section drawn from the island of San Lorenzo off the Pacific coast at Callao to the River Perene, a tributary of the Apurimac, one of the headwaters of the Ucayali. It is a third contribution to a series of papers written as the result of a two years9 expedition to South America (1910–12) undertaken on behalf of the late Mr. W. E. Balston, F.G.S. The district traversed is one of the best-known and most populous in Peru, for through it passes the northern Transandine route from Lima, the capital of the country, to the port of Iquitos on the Amazon, whence steamers sail direct to Europe. The first half of the section follows the line of the central railway of Peru. This is the well-known Oroya line, famous not only as the highest railway in the world, but also as a wonderful feat of engineering, rising as it does to an altitude of over 15,000 feet in a course of 100 miles. The line ascends the steep-sided valley of the Rimac by means of a series of sinuous curves and zigzag ‘switchbacks,’ cut for the greater part in the face of the solid rock. After passing through no fewer than 65 tunnels it reaches the summit of the watershed between the Atlantic and the Pacific river-systems at Ticlio, 15,665 feet above sea-level, and thence descending to 12,000 feet terminates at

A considerable amount of new and significant information in regard to the development of sphagnum bogs on the North American continent has been made available since publication of the earlier paper (Rigg, 1940). Geographically our knowledge has been extended by field work in both northern and southern regions. This field work emphasizes the wide-spread occurrence of some features of bog development, many of which were already known in some localities. There is also some new information on bog development in a few parts of the United States in which the general course of the development of sphagnum bogs was already known. A few papers published before 1940 also merit attention. The use of layers of volcanic ash ("volcanic glass") in bogs as a means of dating approximately and relatively the age of bogs has made notable advance during the last ten years. During the course of field work in 1949 sponsored by the Division of Mines and Geology in Washington State Department of Conservation and Development the writer had opportunity for more extensive and detailed field work on the bogs of that State than he previously had. The objective of this project is to obtain data on the peat resources of the State and publish them in a forthcoming bulletin. The writer is indebted to Mr. Sheldon L. Glover, Supervisor of the Division, for permission to use data from this field work. It has not been possible to quote from all papers that have appeared since 1940 which give information on stages of sphagnum bog development in North America or to quote from all of the letters which have been so kindly written by botanists in reply to inquiries by the writer.
