Apparatus includes a grid holder made of flexible polyvinyl plate 2 mm thick and 45 mm square with 40 small incisions arranged in rows; a form to keep the grid holder in a curved position for facilitating insertion of grids; and a dish which allows staining while the grids are protected from air. The grid holder allows simultaneous treatment of as many as 40 grids. Its slot type incision is effective to hold a grid securely. The staining dish is slightly smaller than the holder, which permits the holder to act as a cover when inverted to immerse the grids. For autoradiography, the holder can be held vertically to bring the grids into a horizontal position to apply emulsion. Grids are drained by having the holder horizontal, grids vertical, and removing excess emulsion from the plate with absorbent paper.

Summary Studying Origami paper patterns of the cleft-lip nose complex, we would like to make the following observations: 1.There is very little difference between the perimeter of the nostril of the cleft and the non-cleft side. By pulling on the cleft side, thus widening the cleft, we notice that the slack is taken up by the acuteness of the columella side. 2.There is an apparent triangular defect in the lower portion of the columella border of the cleft. This is in concurrence with the observation made by Blair and Brown and later by Brown and McDowell. There is also an "excess" triangular-shaped area bordering the cleft side of the lip. This area is rightly utilised in the triangular flap repair (Tennison, Tennison-Randall operation). 3.The ala, together with its hair-bearing skin on the cleft side, appears to be stretched but we notice that this spontaneously corrects itself after the lip repair.

A detailed account is given of a method of preparing giant paper sections of lung for the day following necropsy or, better and more easily, for the subsequent day. This method represents minor modifications to the highly successful Gough-Wentworth technique by challenging the need for lengthy fixation and embedding procedures, but producing results which are thought to be comparable.

Dry wood specimens are sawed to 2mm thickness and impregnated with resin such as Lewisol 28 (Hercules Powder Co.). One side of the specimen is ground by hand on abrasive papers of grades #100, #180, #240, and #320. This side is then cemented to a petrographic glass slide with stick shellac and the other side similarly ground. Scratches can be eliminated by scraping the ground surface with the sharp edge of an ordinary glass microscopic slide. The section is removed by heating the slide, dissolving the shellac with alcohol and the resin of the embedding matrix with xylene. The sections can be stained in a hot saturated alcoholic solution of safranin O, counterstained with 0.01% fast green in an equal parts mixture of clove oil, methyl cellosolve, and absolute alcohol, and mounted in balsam.

Frozen sections are cut from the specimen until the level of interest is reached. A strip of paper (bond or similar writing paper) 5 cm long and about 1 cm wider than the specimen is moistened with water, closely applied to the surface of the specimen and frozen onto it. As the section is cut, the end of the paper strip above the knife is grasped and turned backward toward the other end of the strip. The section is then applied to an albumenized glass slide, firmed and thawed by finger pressure, and the paper removed. After thorough drying, the preparation is ready for further processing. When properly performed, mounted sections whose details coincide to those of the uncut block can be obtained. If thawing on the knife is prevented by cooling the knife, the technic can be performed without a cryostat, but it is also feasible to use a cryostat if a favorable temperature is maintained. The authors obtained 30 μ serial sections, suitable for stereotaxic mapping, from rabbit brain by this method.

To orient properly tiny biopsies, the tissue may be put on paper or absorbable gelatin sponge (Gelfoam) for formaldehyde fixation. With Zenker's fixation, the tissue may be attached with egg albumin to a piece of cucumber.

Perilymph protein was found to be elevated over 1,000 mg/100 ml in 53 patients with acoustic neurinoma. A simple rapid microprotein test for inner ear fluid has been developed that can be used by the otologic surgeon in the operating room. This test requires 1.5μl of inner ear fluid, which is collected from the vestibular cistern in micropipets by capillary attraction. The rapid protein test has been used successfully in 15 patients and appears to be satisfactory as a method of determining approximate inner ear fluid protein concentrations.

The staining properties of Chlorazol paper brown B were discovered while a considerable range of Chlorazol dyes from Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. (Hexagon House, Blaekley, Manchester, 9, England) were being investigated with a view to their possible use as selective stains for paper fibers. The dye is not yet available from dealers.
