There was evident last year at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association (AHA) a concern about the relevance of the historian's work to social change and the growing split between scholarship and political activism. The 1970 meeting disclosed an even more seriously divided association. A slim majority of historians present showed preference for the older concept of neutral scholarship, while a large and vocal minority of liberal, radical and younger scholars asked the AHA members to demonstrate their concern about the state of today's world.
