This article presents the author's reply to Edwin B. Parker on his observations regarding the study conducted by the author towards the effects of television on magazine and newspaper reading in London, England. According to the author, while the process of matching in terms of the correlates of both dependent and independent variables has been used before, Parker has suggested, under the term "covariance procedure," a more formal and systematic use of the technique, a distinct contribution, practical development of which is more than likely. In addition to this, Parker is quite right in reminding a basic weakness in the use of matching as a means of isolating effects. One can and must build checks into the matching process but in the end some degree of doubt must remain about the efficiency of the matching achieved. If Parker had argued from this position in presenting his covariance method as a means of reducing uncertainty, there would have been no point of difference between him and the author.

This article focuses on a study designed to determine effects of television on the reading of newspapers and magazines in London, England. According to the author, the methodological problem involved in this and similar studies of the effects of mass communication is that there was no available alternative to an ex post facto "experimental" design in which respondents themselves selected whether they were to be viewers or non-viewers. Moreover, since respondents could not be randomly assigned to the two conditions by the investigator, differences between the two groups on the dependent variable, frequency of newspaper reading, could be attributed either to the effects of television or to initial differences between the two groups. With regard to all these observations, it can be concluded that television may have had the effect of increasing the reading and buying of papers of popular press with their lighter, shorter material and of decreasing the reading and buying of the more serious papers.

The London Society arranges visits to places of interest in London and Lectures on London problems. It is at the present time publishing a valuable series of papers on "The Transport and Open Space Problem in City Development," while its November issue also Contains an article on the Roman Wall of London, thus well illustrating the combination of forelook and backlook for which the Civic Society stands. To illustrate directions in which useful work might be done by a society such as the one now mentioned allusion may be made to certain subjects brought before it recently. Its members will realise that sweeping schemes of reconstruction cannot suddenly be executed, but they will remember too, that such reconstruction, however slowly it may be achieved, is the only hope of making the city they live in a monument to anything but their carelessness and greed.

This article discusses a study on social status and clique formation among grammar school boys in London, England. This paper reports on another aspect of the inquiry into the effects of social class at adolescence, which has been carried out at the London School of Economics and Political Science in England under the direction of Doctor H. T. Himmelweit. Within the broad framework of the research project, an important place was allotted to problems of peer group selection. Moreover, the paper is based on information from three sources: a choice of friend questionnaire, a sociometric questionnaire and an open-ended question on the attributes of a good friend. The most interesting conclusion which has emerged from these data points to an important difference between this country and the U.S. In both countries, the adolescent's value system largely determines his friendship choices. In England, it has been shown that similar class stereotypes may be found and it is quite possibly true that such friendship criteria as are embodied in the choice of a friend questionnaire reflect parental values. It could also be argued, that the working class boys in the grammar school are exceptional, in that they come from homes where middle class values are prevalent. In England, it may be said in general that by having secondary grammar and secondary modern schools, the working class pupils are divided into those who will be given an opportunity for social ascent and those who will not. England deliberately segregates the new recruits to the higher social levels and gives them more advanced training in separate schools. Under these conditions, several factors combine to give the working class boy those attitudes, interests and motives which are concomitant with his future social position.

The article focuses on the London, England sugar merchants of the eighteenth century. Like many other spheres of economic life in the eighteenth century, the sugar trade has left comparatively few records for the historian to evaluate. The excellent history of the Pinney family by professor Richard Pares discusses much about the organization of the Bristol sugar market. Information about London sugar merchants is restricted very largely to the letter and account books of Messrs Lascelles and Maxwell covering the years 1740 to 1769 but unfortunately only one of the letter books survived the blitz. Nevertheless, Pares was able to work upon the manuscripts prior to their destruction and record some of results of his investigations before his premature death in 1958. The discovery of the Mills family papers has opened the way to a fresh look at the London sugar trade in the eighteenth century. Tobits Wall of Abchurch Lane, London, England originally owned the London sugarhouse. Upon his death in 1744, Wall left the business to his nephew, Mathew Mills and although the London directories for the years 1746 to 1748 are missing, the firm appears in the London directory of 1749 as Mathew and John Mills of New Broad Street.

This article provides a summary of the paper "Adaptations of Animals to Life in Tropical Swaps" presented by L. C. Beadle at the Spring Meeting of the Tropical Group of the British Ecological Society held in London, England, on April 24, 1969. This article provides information on the biennial conference of the British Sociological Association at Queen Elizabeth College in London, England on March 22 to 24, 1957. The theme Sociology in Retrospect and Prospect was an appropriate one in view of the increasingly felt need to undertake a systematic re-assessment and clarification of the main issues involved in sociological theory and practice. A large theme of this nature could not be pursued in exhaustive detail, but the papers in both the plenary and the group sessions were such as to stimulate much thought, and the degree of interest shown in the conference was such as to suggest that this theme was one of central concern to all. The attendance was greater than had been anticipated. Although not central to the theme of the conference, perhaps one of the most significant facts about it was that it became the basis for a consciously contrived effort to begin and foster co-operative relations between the British Association and the American Sociological Society. Another encouraging feature was that 39 students were sufficiently interested to become student members of the association. The executive officers were very helpful throughout, and finally it proved possible to send over a small delegation.

This article discusses a study which examined the relation between science and atheism in London, England during the mid-Victorian period. The paper described what atheists did in the 1860s, their ideology, and their total commitment to the task of making every thinking man and woman an atheist. The mid-Victorian atheist delighted in the use of words, but his shades of meaning in using terms such as atheist, freethinker, secularist are elusive to the historian. In connection with this a nomenclature was suggested. An atheist might deny the existence of God, or he might refuse to do this on the grounds that the word God had no meaning for him. Freethinkers declined to accept the divine inspiration of the bible and he would have included amongst freethinkers the atheists, Unitarians, and a growing number of liberal Christians. The secularist was a freethinker who combined thought with action and aspired by concerted effort with his fellow freethinkers to expose religion to the logic of material facts. Science was studied by working-class atheists because they loved learning for its own sake, and additional motivation came from its usefulness in proving the scripture to be wrong. In conclusion the paper saw science as an alternative to religion for the thinking working man.

The article focuses on the paper on present tendencies in class differentiation by lecturer F.G. D'aeth presented at the meeting of the Sociological Society in London, England. The object of D'aeth's paper was to show that the basis determining class had changed during the past 150 years from that of social position of the family to that of ability of the individual, and that the present class constitution was tending more accurately to represent a grading of ability. Class determination by family and birth which existed 150 years ago had been broken down by three forces: the economic development of society, the education movement, and the formation of the large town. Passage from one class to another was rendered much easier, not only on account of the removal of social barriers but also, partly by the enormous increase, in the number of new posts--thus affording opportunity to hitherto undeveloped forms of ability, and partly by the much greater capacity for expansion within a single occupation--thus affording scope for degree of ability. In view of the importance of ability and its influence in determining the construction of society, it was desirable to study its forms, its distribution in a people, and the laws of its production and transmission.

This article focuses on the Layfield report on Greater London Development Plan, plan that requires local authorities to state their objectives, present alternative strategies for their future development and evaluate the alternative strategies for their future development. Begun when the Greater London Council (GLC) was formed, its origins ante-dated the 1968 Town and Country Planning Act. GLDP is an attempt to define planning objectives and to evaluate a plan for London, England it was backed by many research papers and studies and it was subjected to detailed examination by inquiry. Named the Layfield Inquiry after its chairman, the GLDP was the largest planning inquiry held in the country. The Inquiry accused the GLC of over-ambition for trying to argue as if it could alter population and employment trends when it had neither the statutory powers, nor the real power to do so; variable quality in the treatment of issues--so that, for example, it took much more seriously highway planning where it had responsibility than public transport where it had not (until it took over London Transport in 1970); no logical connection between facts and policies, or between objectives and policies; and describing objectives so vaguely that they were not operational.

The article presents authors' response to comments on his paper "Some Problems in the Evaluation of Urban Road Investments," by K.M. Gwilliam and C.A. Nash. The paper discussed the treatment of the benefit from tax gain to the government. These authors say that they did criticize the London Transportation Study (LTS) treatment of taxation. The paper was also criticized on the treatment of dead loss. Authors say that they criticize the LTS criterion in respect of the implication of ignoring the dead-loss, but not in respect of the situation envisaged simply because, as an inspection of they considered there a different case, namely one with a backward bending supply curve, a most important part of the LTS evaluation problem. So far as it goes, authors agree with the statement made by Gwilliam and Nash about the general case in the appropriate context. The paper was also criticized for the treatment of systems' effects. These author doubts whether their points about the treatment of network effects can be properly called a criticism of the LTS criterion. LTS was attempting an evaluation of a total network, not of a link within it. These authors say that they believe that the attempt made by Gwilliam and Nash to show that the LTS criterion is really the way of measuring the benefits is fallacious.

The article presents authors' comments on the paper "Some Problems in the Evaluation of Urban Road Investments," by M.E. Beesley and A.A. Walters. In the paper Beesley and Walters suggest a procedure for evaluation of urban road projects that differs in some important matters of principle from that developed in connection with the London Transportation Study (LTS), which is widely favored as the appropriate basis for economic evaluation. In considering taxation gain, Beesley and Walters say the argument for including this item as a benefit or cost must be, as is usual in cost benefit analysis, that it reflects a real benefit or cost to society in some sense. They said that on the assumption that some other taxes are reduced to compensate them, one should enter a benefit if the reduction in the marginal misallocation of resources and costs of collection of the reduced taxes offsets the costs of collection and misallocation effects of the taxes on the new road. They said that tracing out the misallocation effects and collection costs would be immensely complicated and thus, from ignorance, one must remain neutral as to whether any benefit exists.

The article presents information on a paper presented by journalist Walter James on educational research during the Standing Conference on Studies in Education which was held in London, England, on December 12, 1970. Over the years many educational researches, in short summary as news items, have announced themselves to James in the page proofs. Educational researchers and their critics have wrestled in the correspondence columns. There have been many articles recording the results of some kind or another of educational research. But if the nature of research in the two fields is so different, it does not seem to James to follow that in the natural sciences there should be so wide a field of agreement and in educational science. This article highlights the first conference of the British Sociological Association held in London, England on March 27-29, 1953. The conference was attended by 233 persons of whom 125 were members of the Association. The theme was Social Policy and the Social Sciences. The conference opened with a plenary session which was addressed by Myrdal on the Relation Between Social Theory and Social Policy. The material presented in this paper was collected in the course of a study of an urban general practice made by the Social Medicine Research Unit of the Medical Research Council during 1950-52. The article focuses on the history of advertising in newspapers in London, England between 1650 and 1750. It may be approached from at least three directions. First, there is the history of advertising per se; in this respect subsequent general histories have made little advance on Henry Sampson's pioneering work published almost a century ago. Blanche B. Elliott in A History of English Advertising has covered fresh ground in her examination of the advertisement sheets in the late seventeenth century, but has barely touched upon the much larger subject of advertising in newspapers proper during the period under review. The historians have concentrated somewhat superficially on the evident humor, quaintness, and evocativeness of many of the advertisements and have almost entirely neglected any quantitative analysis. Secondly, advertising may be considered as part of the history of journalism, a legitimate approach when one appreciates that by 1750, 75% of space in some dailies was being devoted to advertisements. Thirdly, the advertisements may be studied as a source for literary, economic, and social history.

This paper seeks to expand upon an aspect of rights issues investigated by Merrett, Howe and Newbould in Equity Issues and the London Capital Market, of the prediction of the ex-rights price. It is suggested on the basis of an Australian sample that the London results are sustained, but that varying the assumptions made we are able to extend our knowledge of the adjustment of share prices to the new information which becomes available in relation to rights issues. The author of this paper, Secretary to a London Juvenile Advisory Committee, compares the methods of vocational guidance used in London with those which she found in Berlin. It will be noted that in Berlin the vocational psychologist is engaged in solving problems of selection rather than of guidance : he is usually asked to determine by a series of tests of abilities whether and, if so, in what degree a given child appears fitted for one specified occupation. The vocational adviser refers to the psychologist only about ten per cent. of the applicants for guidance—mainly cases where there is conflict of opinion or indecision or where skilled apprenticeship is under consideration. The article presents a speech by the president of the Sociological Society Edward Brabrook, during its annual meeting in London, England. The president addressed few words on the occasion of the annual meeting of the society. He paid tribute to physician J.H. Bridges, one of the most efficient member of the society. The production of three volumes of sociological papers, and of the first volume of quarterly "Sociological Review" were further discussed. In the first volume, published in 1904, V.V. Branford, honorary secretary and founder of the society traced the origin and the use of the word sociology. The twofold method by which the study is to be pursued was broadly defined. In the second volume its relation to the philosophy of history and its relation to ethics were stated, while the third volume fitly closes with the paradox of H.G. Wells, that sociology is not a science. The other sections discussed in the speech were progress report of the "Sociological Review," various meetings of the society in the past, finance, eugenics, civics, education and social economy.

The article presents an examination of existing ideas and theories about television's effects as they are presented in the research literature, as claimed by the press and as gathered in extensive interviews of a non-directive kind with viewers and non-viewers. The investigation was to be limited to London, England and it began in 1953. The study tests theories postulating that television affects certain mental states and processes. The main theory within this system was that there has been a loss through television of identification with or concern for those interests about which viewers were formerly oriented. The second central theory that television's direct treatment, in its programmes, of various interests has not made up the loss hypothesized in the first theory. The first two theories postulate changes in identification. Identification is a motivational concept implying that an object or activity has a positive valence for people. The study of television's effects upon interests would be incomplete if it did not deal with the behavioral expression of the identification.

SUMMARY This paper describes an investigation, the purpose of which was to derive estimates of the total number of people who are in a position to see advertisements on the outside of London Transport buses. Two separate but complementary surveys were carried out: a Greater London interview survey which recorded time spent on roads that are bus routes and a photographic study in which were counted people present on the routes as seen from the bus. By relating the results of the former survey to the frequency with which buses traverse the routes, estimates were derived of the numbers of "opportunities to see" advertisements on the outside of buses. These primary estimates were then refined, using the photographic survey, to produce estimates of "full-face" encounters with buses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The critical data in this study is information on house purchase transactions for owner occupation, which were financed with the help of a mortgage from the Nationwide Building Society (then known as the Co-operative Permanent Building Society) during the first three months of 1968. In this period the Society was involved in some 1,800 house purchase transactions, located in 539 different towns and postal districts in the South East Planning Region. This is a much wider geographical area than the London Metropolitan Region, the one under consideration in this paper. The Metropolitan Region is the area within a radius of approximately 40 miles from central London and the majority of these 1,800 transactions were in this area. For each transaction, 44 separate pieces of information were collected. The important data, from the point of view of this study, was that on purchase price, geographical location and physical aspects of the house, such as its size, age, availability of central heating, etc. All this wealth of data is stored on a computer at the Building Research Station, Watford.[1] A preliminary study of the data, Ministry of Public Building and Works Building Research Station (1968), has indicated that the houses in this particular building society's survey can be considered as typical of all transactions made by the larger building societies.[2]. The article presents the first of three papers on the scientific bases of theories in psychiatry, based on material that was developed into a lecture given at the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London in London, England in 1970. It reflects on the decline of the prestige of scientific knowledge at the present, and looks at what science means for the early psychiatrists. It explains that science calls for attitudes, such as dedication, reverence for truth and humility, which are now almost obsolete in the scientific working communities. It also examined the address given by psychiatrists Edward Mapother and Frederick Golla, which answered questions of whether psychiatry can aspire to be a science.

The article cites a study that examines the genetic and environmental factors in the etiology of schizophrenia through twin and family studies. One development being tackled in the paper is the study of a large sample of schizophrenic twins in a non-Western culture. A register of all twins seen at the Medical Research Council's Psychiatric Genetics Unit of the Maudsley and Bethlehem Royal Joint Hospital in London, England has been kept from 1948 onwards. Gordon led the crowd of about 50,000 people to the House of Commons to present the petition for the repeal of the Roman Catholic Relief Act 1778. The article focuses on the lecture "The Future of London Government," delivered by Gilbert Slater on London government's future, during a meeting of the Sociological Society in London, England. The author describes London not as a city but a province with no civic rights. The London County council possesses no general municipal rights, while the corporation of the city, which did possess such rights, governed only one square mile of the whole metropolitan areas, and the powers of the metropolitan borough councils were more restricted than those of an ordinary urban district council. A city council for Greater London was indicated along with the necessity for a considerable degree of local self-government for existing boroughs and districts. True municipal councils for London boroughs were the second desideratum for the reform of London government. The author further proposes that Local Government Board should be abolished, and Ministries of Labour and Public Health constituted. Parliamentary procedure also needed to be raised to the municipal level of efficiency.
