ANOMY ,ANOMIA ,GUTTMAN scale ,CLASS analysis ,HOUSEHOLDS - Abstract
Durkheim popularized the term anomie and stimulated a great deal of theoretical discussion and research. Subsequently, Srole constructed interview schedule items to measure Personal anomia, and his items have been used by a large number of investigators. Many of these researchers implicitly assumed unidimensionality while others explicitly tested for it by Gutttman scaling and factor analysis techniques. However, none of these researchers repeated Srole's latent class analysis. In this paper, representative samples of households in the Los Angeles SMSA and in a "suburban type" city responded to the anomia items as part of larger investigations. The responses were subjected to factor analysis and Guttman scaling for a test of unidimensionality, and latent class analysis as a test of scalability and typological construction. For both samples, the responses did not meet the generally accepted criterion of a "pure" Guttman scale. As a result of a principal axis factor analysis only one common factor was extracted in both samples. The Green solution was used for latent class analysis and the result was the minimum one would expect from a unidimensional set of items, or two classes--the anomic and eunomic. Major conclusions are that it cannot be assumed an item, or universe of items, will foster the same results in different universes or at different times, even under somewhat similar modes of analysis. If no tests for unidimensionality and scalability are made, gradations of the Guttman scale type appear to be contra-indicated and polarization appears to be more appropriate for the Srole items. 7. ECONOMIC CLASS CONSCIOUSNESS IN AMERICAN PROTESTANTISM: II.

PROTESTANTISM ,PROTESTANT churches ,ECONOMIC structure - Abstract
In a previous issue of the "American Sociological Review," the writer demonstrated the positive correlation between the relative economic status of various areas in Los Angeles, California, and the avenge denominational per capita wealth of churches located in the areas. Two tentative conclusions were drawn from this relationship, Protestantism. It was discovered further that the distribution of Los Angeles Protestant churches did not correspond to the distribution of population. In Los Angeles, the lower the economic status of an area, in general, the more churches there were per capita. It was suggested that this distribution, if not atypical, might be yet another manifestation of the operation of economic class considerations in American Protestantism. In the above-described study one important question remained unanswered: To what extent were the data in Los Angeles unique and therefore unreliable for generalization? This question is answered in part by the present paper, which is a report of a study of Indianapolis churches.

SUICIDAL behavior ,SUICIDE ,OFFENSES against the person ,HOMICIDE - Abstract
The author has attempted to categorize a set of suicide notes according to their formal aspects. The perspective adopted is that of the actor, what he must experience, how he must view these experiences, the social constraints restraining him from suicide, how he succeeds in overcoming them, and finally, the precautions he takes to prevent the recurrence of a similar set of circumstances after his death. The paper is based primarily on an analysis of 112 suicide notes of persons who succeeded in suicide in the Los Angeles area. Insights gained by the author through his work with adolescent suicide attempters and their parents also aided in the formulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DIFFERENTIATION (Sociology) ,ETHNIC groups ,JEWS ,SOCIAL status ,URBANIZATION ,SEGREGATION ,SOCIAL space ,PSYCHOLOGICAL typologies - Abstract
The article discusses the problem of differentiation of an ethnic group. According to authors of the article, the Jewish minority is well constituted for the analysis. The group is set in a complex metropolitan situation. There are varying degrees of isolation of and cultural differences within the group and there is a lack of direct measures of numbers and demographic characteristics of the population. These circumstances make the task of differentiation a precondition to intensive analysis. The basic instrument of analysis is an urban typology, framed by a tri-dimensional social space bounded by status, urbanization and segregation, which are based on census tract data. It is concluded that the ethnic institutional services are located with minor exceptions in the identifiable neighborhoods. The plotting of synagogues according to the social rank of their locations in Los Angeles, California, showed a bi-modal distribution. The Orthodox and Reformed components in the distribution were fairly sharply separated and Orthodoxy was negatively related to status.

A close contest for the mayoralty of Los Angeles in 1969 between the incumbent and a strongly supported Negro candidate is the context for a structural analysis of the areal pattern of the vote. A factor model is used to define four major patterns of interrelations in a wide range of socioeconomic and voting variables. Each isolates significant aspects of the voting pattern, but they are unable to determine clearly the reasons for the defeat in the final election of the Negro candidate who gained a substantial lead in the primary. The functional composition of three ethnically based samples of retail and service establishments in Los Angeles County, California, corresponded closely to the pattern that might be predicted on the basis of income, available physical facilities for shopping, and subcultural consumer preferences. Functional diversification was inversely related to income. Interethnic differences were particularly pronounced in the food, financial service, professional service, and vacancy categories at the two-digit level. The food, eating and drinking, personal service, and ‘other retail’ categories exhibited significant variations at the four-digit level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL participation ,URBANIZATION ,CITIES & towns ,FORMAL organization - Abstract
This report is based upon a pilot study of differences in social participation between sample populations in two Los Angeles areas, that is census tracts 35 and 63. The two tract populations are nearly identical with respect to two of the indices, social rank and segregation and differ on the third, urbanization. The field study included scheduled interviews on the participation of adult members of households in formal organizations, neighboring, cultural events, visiting, domestic activities, the mass media, the kin group, and other social structures. The low-urban sample differed sharply and consistently in the direction of more participation in the local community. The low-urban sample had a higher rate of membership and participation in formal organizations other than church, and, more important, a larger proportion of their organizations were local in nature. Furthermore, the members of formal organizations to which the low-urban sample belonged were more apt to live in the immediate local community. In the high-urban sample other members were most apt to be scattered over the metropolis as a whole.

SOCIAL classes ,PROTESTANT churches ,CHURCH buildings ,SOCIOLOGICAL research - Abstract
At the present stage of sociological research it amounts to a cliché to observe that social class lines are hardening in the U.S. But the degree and type of visible class consciousness is another question. About such matters less is known. In the present study, an effort has been made to determine the actual extent to which class consciousness in an economic sense appears to manifest itself ecologically among certain Protestant church denominations. It is a matter of common observation that church edifices representing denominations known to be wealthy are frequently found in upper-class residential areas, just as it is known that "store front" churches are located in disorganized neighborhoods. But the real extent of this phenomenon has apparently not yet been measured. This article reports an attempt to make such a measurement, using as data all Protestant churches of Los Angeles as representatives of their denominations. The procedure has been as follows: using a six-fold scale ranging from "wealthy" to "below average," was determined for the geographical area surrounding each white, non-Mexican Protestant church existing in Los Angeles, California in 1940.

SCHOOL boards ,INCUMBENCY (Public officers) ,ETHNICITY - Abstract
This article seeks to investigate sources of influence on the Junior College Board vote for the Junior College Board of Trustees in Los Angeles, California in April 1969. Multiple regression analysis was used so that the independent impact of a number of potential factors can be estimated. Important cues for the voters in the election seem to have been endorsement by the area's largest newspaper, the persuasions of a conservative campaign group, the appeal of a familiar name and, at least for Mexican-Americans, ethnic identification. It must be stressed that one important cue, incumbency, was entirely missing in the election and that another, party identification, could play only a very minor and indirect role, if any. In elections in which these factors are involved and also in those in which campaigning by the candidates become more visible, it is to be expected that the effects of order, name and ethnic identification and newspaper endorsement would diminish greatly. The results of the study suggest that the outcome is likely to be determined by authoritative endorsement, the activities of small organized groups, various semi-relevant cues associated with the names of candidates and the order in which their names appear on the ballot.

Skid rowers are members of a group made up of marginal men, living in geographically segregated, low-income, Skid Row communities, who are involved in a chronic cycle of unemployment, dependence on welfare assistance, alcoholism, vagrancy, and so forth. The Career Clinic in Los Angeles, California, a unique joint effort of the religious, private, and public sectors, represents an innovative approach to solving this major problem. The process begins with a referral of the skid rower to the employment unit of the Unattached Men's Center by his caseworker following application for relief. After sociological data for research analysis are obtained from him, he is asked to report to the Career Clinic, which is located a short distance from the welfare agency. There he is asked to take a battery of psychological and attitudinal tests. Additional information is gathered for future research analysis through the use of standard psychological instruments: the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, California Psychological Inventory, Edward's Personal Preference Schedule, and the Strong Vocational Blank.
