1. University-Urban Interface Program. Background Paper: The University and the Community in the Domain of Health.

Abstract

The first part of the paper focuses on concepts and ideas which can be used to discuss interface in any field or domain. For example, meaning of words "community" and "university" are sorted out. Attention is given to the idea of interface as expectations, goals, attitudes, purposes and behavior. In the second part, these same concepts are re-examined in the domain of medical and health services in a community with a university medical facility. Many issues are raised but no stand is taken. The paper is designed to stimulate thinking about what an individual in the "university" or in the "community" might do in reaching an interface. (Related documents are SO 004 018 and SO 004 019.) Abstract

The Fifteenth International Congress on Hygiene and Demography, held in Washington City in the autumn of 1912, was a notable event in the history of sanitation and in the discussion of the conditions of the physical and mental health of the people. The exhibition held in connection with the congress was instructive in many ways, and contained much of interest to those who are responsible, directly or indirectly, for the health of children. The first section of the accompanying manuscript contains brief and accurate descriptions of some of the most important of the exhibits, and comprehensive summaries of their meaning. Topics addressed in this section include: (1) School buildings and school sanitation; (2) Hygiene and tuberculosis; (3) Industrial hygiene; (4) Nourishment of children; (5) Mental hygiene; (6) Sex hygiene; and (7) Experimental psychology. An appendix to Part I of this bulletin presents instructions relating to tuberculosis, distributed by the Department of Health, New York City. The second section consists of excerpts and summaries containing the gist of some of the most important papers read at the congress. Abstract

This paper, one in a series of occasional publications, discusses the role of the midwife, or "daya," in contemporary Egypt. The series is intended to increase understanding of the interrelationships between population growth and socioeconomic and cultural patterns throughout the world, and to communicate this understanding to scholars and policy makers. The following questions are discussed: (1) How is the traditional midwife faring in Egypt, a country where modern medicine has been practiced for many decades and where maternal and child health and family planning services are within reach of most inhabitants? (2) How have her role and her practices evolved and adjusted in the face of competition from modern medical practice? (3) What forms of interaction exist between her and the public health personnel? (4) How does she view family planning activities and is there any way in which she can be induced to help rather than to obstruct family planning efforts? (Author/RM)

Abstract

The Conference for Education in the South, which for 16 years has held its annual sessions at different places in the Southern States, is unique among educational conferences, in that its membership does not consist chiefly of teachers and school officers, but of farmers, professional men of all kinds, business men, and women of varied interests, and in the further fact that its discussions are not confined to problems of educational theory, school organization, and schoolroom practice, but include rather the broader problems of education in their relation to State, society, and industrial and commercial life. Its members are all interested in the upbuilding of the Southern States. Every question on the program is considered with reference to its practical application to life and conditions in these States. 6. Health Factors Influencing Education of American Indians. A Position Paper.

Abstract

The resume of health problems facing the American Indian school child emphasized that health, culture, education, and economics are mutually interdependent and must be evaluated and planned for jointly. Specific health problems discussed include general health, nutrition, fever and chronic illness, hearing, sight, and mental health. Recommendations were that health conditions be evaluated on a community-wide basis; that family-oriented nutrition surveys be done to evaluate nutritional status of Indian communities; that medical histories of each child be evaluated as each preschool or school-age child is given a complete medical examination; that hearing problems should be detected as early as possible and audiometric examination should be done to detect any loss of particular pitch; that each child's vision be evaluated not only by a Snellen chart test but also by ocular measurements to determine if eye deformity exists; and that mental health programs be planned in a comprehensive fashion, by treating not only the individual but the social environment from which he comes. Abstract

This forum considers preventive health care to include not only good physical and dental care, good nutrition, and good sanitation, but also adequate housing, quality education, sufficient clothing as well as opportunities to experience love, achieve self respect, participate in play and become meaningfully involved with others. Several population groups in our country are subject to unusual health hazards and have particular need for health care. Poor children, expectant mothers, young infants, handicapped and emotionally disturbed children, and children of migrant workers are the especially vulnerable groups. The social pathology of narcotic addiction, prejudice, understimulation, violence, and indifference to human needs constitutes other pressing problems that threaten the quality of physical and emotional health in our society. A high priority should be set on the development and delivery of needed services to insure immediate access to decent care for the most vulnerable groups. Other recommendations call for acceptance of national standards for preventive health services, manpower augmentation, research in the health sciences, adequate income, good nutrition, improved housing, and a reinstitutionalization reconstruction of the systems for delivering human services as a national commitment. TELECLUBS, BECAUSE OF THE NOVELTY OF TELEVISION, WERE SO POPULAR THAT OVERCROWDING, AS WELL AS UNEVEN ATTENDANCE BY CLUB MEMBERS, AFFECTED THE GOAL OF EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF TELECASTS ON CITIZENSHIP. GREATER SUCCESS WAS REALIZED IN BRINGING ABOUT SHIFTS IN INFORMATION THAN IN ATTITUDES, PERHAPS, BECAUSE THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP STARTED AT A HIGHER LEVEL OF ATTITUDE THAN INFORMATION. THE MEMBERS WERE MOSTLY LOWER MIDDLE CLASS AND MALE, WITH A HIGH REPRESENTATION OF PROFESSIONALS. A BASELINE SURVEY AND A TERMINAL SURVEY OF 20 CLUBS AND THEIR 418 MEMBERS MEASURED THE IMPACT OF 20 SPECIAL TELECASTS. A SUPPLEMENTARY GROUP PARTICIPATION ASSESSMENT SCHEDULE WAS GIVEN TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF THE NUMBER OF FRIENDS THE MEMBERS HAD IN THE TELECLUBS ON THEIR ATTENDANCE, PARTICIPATION, AND RESPONSE.
