In a recent paper Weiss (1965) has suggested a simple model for a carrier-borne epidemic such as typhoid. He considers a population (of size m) of susceptibles into which a number (k) of carriers is introduced. These carriers exhibit no overt symptoms and are only detectable by the discovery of infected persons. He supposed that after the initial introduction of the carriers, the population remains entirely closed and no new carriers arise. The epidemic then progresses until either all the carriers have been traced and isolated or until the entire population has succumbed to the disease.

We illustrate a technique for computing certain integrals that arise in probability theory by giving a new derivation of a formula of Kingman. This formula contains the joint distribution of the processes F(t) = inf {s: X(t + s) = b} and B(t) = inf{s: X(t - s) = b} where X is a time homogeneous, continuous parameter, Markov process and b is a fixed point in its state space. We then extend this formula to the situation in which b is replaced by a finite set {b 1, …, b n }.

In a recent paper Robinson has obtained an explicit formula for the expression of an invariant matrix of an invariant matrix as a direct sum of invariant matrices. The object of the present note is to show that this formula may be deduced from known properties of Schur functions, with the aid of a result which the author has proved elsewhere.

1. SUMMARY In this paper the main discussion is concerned with obtaining asymptotic results for sequences of birth and death processes which are similar to the central limit theorem for sequences of univariate random variables. The motivation is the need to obtain useful approximations to the distributions of sample paths of processes which arise as models for population growth, but for which Kolmogorov differential equations are intractable. In the first section, univariate processes are considered, and conditions are given for the weak convergence of Z N (t) = {X N (t) - aN}/N, where {X N (t), N = 1,2,…} is a sequence of ergodic birth and death processes, to those of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process N → ∞. A heuristic method is given which may help explain why this convergence holds, and some examples are given for purposes of illustration. The second part deals with multivariate processes, and three examples are considered in detail: a model for the growth of the sexes in a biological population, a multivariate Ehrenfest process, and a model for the growth and interreaction of two cities. The paper concludes with a discussion of various related results. It is shown that in certain special cases it is possible to obtain diffusions other than the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as limits. Finally, heavy traffic results are included for congestion situations originally considered in the special case of time-homogenous arrival rates by Kingman. Transient processes such as epidemics are also shown to exhibit a “central limit” behavior.

We assume that the number of claims occur according to a renewal process and treat the number of claims that occur and are reported in a certain time interval as a renewal process with random displacements. We obtain a renewal equation for the mean value function and an integral equation for the Laplace transform of the distribution of the claims that are reported. We also give asymptotic expressions for the mean value function and calculate the generating function in the case where the renewal process is a Poisson process. This matter is a part of the IBNR-problem in insurance mathematics. INCURRED BUT NOT REPORTED CLAIMS; RENEWAL PROCESS WITH RANDOM DISPLACEMENTS ntroduction At a given point of time one has only partial knowledge of an insurance business. For instance, there is always a time lag between the occurrence of a road accident and the reporting of and full knowledge of the claim amount due to that accident. This lack of information generates many questions. One, which this paper touches, is: if we observe M(t) occurred and reported claims during the interval (0, t), how many claims occurred in that period? On the accounting date one has to answer this question and make an estimate of the number of claims which occurred during the last year. The starting point will be assumptions of the number of claims that occur in (0, t). Since the days of Filip Lundberg one has assumed that this is described by a Poisson process. Several authors have tried to generalize Lundberg's model. Without intending to make a complete list we mention Ove Lundberg, Sparre Andersen and Jan Grandell. We will pursue the course of Sparre Andersen who in 1957 presented a paper [1] where the epochs of claims form a renewal process. As to the distribution of the time lag between the occurrence of a claim and the report of that claim there are several possible ways. We will make the assumption that the lags are independent and equally distributed, which seems to be a reasonable assumption as a first approximation at least when the claim amounts are of a fairly equal size. Erdös [1] has shown that, if the square-free numbers in ascending order be denoted by s1, s2, … , sn, … , then for 0 ≦ γ ≦ 2as x → ∞. In this paper we shall extend this result by proving that the asymptotic formula in fact holds for the wider range 0 ≦ γ ≦ 3.Similar results have been obtained previously by the author in respect of both the sequence of numbers expressible as the sum of two squares and also sequences of numbers relatively prime to given large integers, although the method used here differs from that of the earlier papers [2; 3].

The observations of this paper evolved from the concept of 'asymptotic nonexpansiveness' introduced by two of the writers in a previous paper [10]. Let X be a Banach space and K ⊆ X. A mapping T : K → K is called asymptotically nonexpansive if for each x, y ∊ Kwhere {ki} is a fixed sequence of real numbers such that ki→1 as i → ∞ . It is proved in [10] that if K is a bounded closed and convex subset of a uniformly convex space X then every asymptotically nonexpansive mapping T : K → K has a fixed point. This theorem generalizes the fixed point theorem of Browder-Göhde-Kirk [2 ; 12 ; 16] for nonexpansive mappings (mappings T for which ||T(x) — T(y)|| ≦ ||x — y||, x, y ∊ K) in a uniformly convex space. (A generalization along similar lines also has been obtained by Edelstein [4].)

This paper continues the author's study of age-dependent branching processes allowing immigration. In this paper the multidimensional case is considered. A sufficient condition is obtained for the existence of a legitimate limiting distribution. Several corollaries are obtained, which generalize many of the results of the discrete theory and those of the one-dimensional continuous time model.

A detailed probabilistic treatment is given of a birth-and-death process proposed by Williams (1969) in which the elements of the process bear up to s inanimate marks. Equations for the second-order moments of the process, and approximate marginal univariate solutions, are derived. The exact bivariate solution is given for the case s = 1. For general s the variance of the mark population is also derived. MARKED BIRTH-AND-DEATH PROCESS; MULTIVARIATE LAGRANGE DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS; MULTITYPE BRANCHING PROCESS Introduction In a recent paper Williams (1969) has considered the following process. We have a population of elements developing as a linear birth-and-death process and each element bears a number of inanimate marks. When a marked element dies then it and its marks are removed from the population; when a marked element divides, its marks segregate independently and without loss, each with probability I into one of the two daughter elements. It is assumed that marking an element does not affect its birth and death rates (cf. Clifford and Sudbury (1972)). Williams' process was proposed as a model of an experiment conducted on bacteria (the elements) infected by phage (the inanimate marks), by Meynell (1959). (The bacteria are lysogenic with respect to the phage, which means that the phage do not interfere with the behaviour of the bacteria.) His object was to use the marking process in order to separate the birth and death rates of the bacteria; if we denote birth and death rates by A and p respectively, then the mean-value measures on the bacterial population (assumed to develop as a linear birth-and-death process) will estimate the difference (A p). As the marks are inanimate, however, they will only be affected by p and so mean-value measures on the mark population enable us to estimate p (see Williams (1969)). The papers of Meynell and Williams taken together provide a most interesting example of a virological experiment and the probability model of that experiment. Here we shall give a fuller probabilistic statement of the model and make some contributions to its solution. Two differences from Williams' work lie in the adoption of an upper bound, s, to the number of marks any element can have, and the assumption (except where stated) of birth and death rates independent of time. We 'shall assume general initial conditions which, in Meynell's experiment, correspond to the distribution of phage over bacteria once these have been initially exposed to a phage population. Williams took this distribution to be Poisson; the distribution of phage over bacteria has, however, been the subject of much probabilistic study (e.g., see Gani (1965) and Morgan (1971)). Finally, let us note that the value s = I, on which we shall particularly concentrate, probably gives the most realistic description of Meynell's experiment. 2. In the last ten years the theory of weak convergence of probability measures has been used extensively in studying the models of applied probability. By far the greatest consumer of weak convergence has been the area of queueing theory. This survey paper represents an attempt to summarize the experience in queueing theory with the hope that it will prove helpful in other areas of applied probability. The paper is organized into the following sections: queues in light traffic, queues in heavy traffic, queues with a large number of servers, continuity of queues, rates of convergence, and special queueing models.

A dissectible polyhedron is a natural extension of a concept whose history dates back to at least 1758 and Euler [7]—the concept of a dissection of a polygon. An interesting historical survey of dissections of a polygon is given by Brown [4]. Some approaches to the classical problem have been given by Moon and Moser [9] and by Guy [8] ; the latter provides an approach which is the basis of the work in this paper. A summary of enumeration results on dissections of polygons and polyhedra by automorphism groups has been given by the authors [2].Recent extensions of the problem have been investigated in a series of papers by Brown and Tutte [3; 5; 14; 15] and b y Takeo [10; 11; 12; 13].

In a paper of the same title, Ewens has considered the problem of inferring whether the genotypic frequencies observed in a small sample are consistent with a particular population model, in which all types are selectively neutral. The present paper gives the general theory of such sampling schemes, when the sampling is from either a deterministic, or a stochastically varying, population. The theory is illustrated on a population model which was introduced by Karlin and McGregor. Various results are proved for both the population, and its sample. It is shown that Ewens' sampling theory applies to this population model, and conjectures as to why different population models may have the same sampling theory are made.

In this paper, we continue the study of integral extensions begun in [7]. Whereas in the previous paper, we dealt exclusively with the extension A[x]/(α(x)), α(x) a monic polynomial over A, we now deal with arbitrary integral extensions. Applications of the results presented herein will be made in subsequent papers.To simplify our presentation, we make the following conventions. This paper is motivated by work in two fields, the theory of strict topologies and topological measure theory. In [1], R. C. Buck began the study of the strict topology for the algebra C*(S) of continuous, bounded real-valued functions on a locally compact Hausdorff space S and showed that the topological vector space C*(S) with the strict topology has many of the same topological vector space properties as C0(S), the sup norm algebra of continuous realvalued functions vanishing at infinity. Buck showed that as a class, the algebras C*(S) for S locally compact and C*(X), for X compact, were very much alike. Many papers on the strict topology for C*(S), where S is locally compact, followed Buck's; e.g., see [2; 3].

Let observations (X 1, X 2, …, Xn ) be obtained from a time series {Xt } such that where the ɛt are independently and identically distributed random variables each having mean zero and finite variance, and the gu (θ) are specified functions of a vector-valued parameter θ. This paper presents a rigorous derivation of the asymptotic distributions of the estimators of A, B, ω and θ obtained by an approximate least-squares method due to Whittle (1952). It is a sequel to a previous paper (Walker (1971)) in which a similar derivation was given for the special case of independent residuals where gu (θ) = 0 for u > 0, the parameter θ thus being absent.

In this paper R is a commutative noetherian local ring with unit element 1 and M is its maximal ideal. Let K be the residue field R/M and let {t1,t2,…, tn) be a minimal system of generators for M. By a complex R1. . ., Tp> we mean an R-algebra* obtained by the adjunction of the variables T1. . ., Tp of degree 1 which kill t1,…, tp. The main purpose of this paper is, among other things, to construct an R-algebra resolution of the field K, so that we can investigate the relationship between the homology algebra H (R < T1,…, Tn>) and the homological invariants of R such as the algebra TorR(K, K) and the Betti numbers Bp = dimk TorR(K, K) of the local ring R. The relationship was initially studied by Serre [5].

In recent years there has been some interest in trying to improve the behaviour of maps by extending their domains. For example, in 1953 Whyburn showed that every map is the restriction of a compact map [17]. Similarly, Krolevec proved in 1967 that each locally perfect map can be extended to a perfect map [12] and in an as yet unpublished paper, Dickman obtained the same result for arbitrary maps [4]. In this paper we show that every map can be extended to an open map so that certain properties of the domain and range are preserved in the new domain. These results are then used to obtain analogues and improvements of recent theorems of Arhangel'skiï, Ĉoban, Hodel, and Proizvolov.

When one considers the prodigious prolificity of theorems established by Apollonius and others upon the cone and the conic sections, it may be surprising to observe that certain aspects still remain unexplored. Although Apollonius (3rd century B. C.), a master of the synthetic method in geometry, established 387 propositions on the cone during his forty-year life time, his results have been extended by many others even down to modern times. In the latter part of this paper the author wishes to contribute one new development on the cone, but first proposes to invite the reader's attention to some earlier aspects of the cone's illustrious career. The discovery of the conic sections is attributed to Menaechmus in the 4th century B. C. He employed conics to solve the famous Delian problem -the Duplication of the Cube. Apollonius investigated the non-focal properties of the conic, its conjugate diameters, asymptotes, and the harmonic property of the pole and polar for the case in which the pole lies outside the curve. Not until the 17th century were any further major advances made on conics. The latter theorem of Apollonius was then generalized by the genius of Desargues. Among the lost works attributed to Euclid were four Books on Conics, the last one however not being completed by him. It seems that Apollonius took over the completion of these and added four more of his own. He defined the basic cone as one having an oblique axis and set on a circular base. This was called a scalene cone. He proved that all sections parallel to the base are also circular; and that there is another parallel set of circular sections, "sub-contrary" to these. In the latter part of this paper the author will invoke modern analytic geometry methods to determine the dihedral angle between these two sub-contrary sets of circular sections. Apollonius derived the equivalent of the focus-directrix properties of the sections of this general cone, obtaining results equivalent to the modern analytic definitions of the conics. However, he made no reference to a directrix nor did he evince any knowledge thereof. Neither did he utilize a focus for the parabola. He showed that the conic has the same property with reference to any diameter as it has with reference to its axis (a special diameter). He expressed the fundamental property of each conic by equations between areas of associated rectangles. These relations were equivalent to the Cartesian equation of the conic. However, it remained for Pappas to state the modern locus definition for the conics. The latter first introduced the concept of eccentricity. Apollonius assigned the appropriate names to the sections, parabola (equivalent), ellipse (falls short) and hyperbola (exceeds). Straight lines and circles were then known as "plane loci", whereas conics were spoken of as "solid loci".

SUMMARY This paper contains a study of the departure process from M/G/1 queues with a waiting space of size N> 0. The property of the departure process which receives the most attention is the covariance of pairs of departure intervals, although a more thorough investigation of the probabilistic structure is undertaken for the case N= 1. A main result of the paper is that in the M/G/1 queue with N = 1, departure intervals separated by one or more intervals are independent. When G is the deterministic server, the departure stream is a renewal process. The paper concludes with an expression for the covariance of any pair of intervals in the departure process for any value of N, and numerical values for correlations in the case of a deterministic server with N= 2.

Introduction. Until recently none of the numerous papers on the distribution of quadratic and higher power residues was concerned with questions of the following sort: Let k and m be positive integers. According to a theorem of Brauer (1), for every sufficiently large prime p there exist m consecutive positive integers r, r + l , . . . , r + m — 1, each of which is a &th power residue of p. Let r(k, m, p) denote the least such r. What can be said about the behaviour of r(k, m, p) as p varies? In particular, for what values of k and m is r(k, m, p) bounded, and for these values what is its maximum? For a fixed k and m we call a prime exceptional and denote it by p* if there do not exist m consecutive integers each of which is a &th power residue of p*. In a recent paper [12] Muckenhoupt and Wheeden have established necessary and sufficient conditions for the validity of norm inequalities of the form ‖ |x|αTƒ ‖q ≦ C‖ |x|αƒ ‖p, where Tƒ denotes a Calderón and Zygmund singular integral of ƒ or a fractional integral with variable kernel. The purpose of the present paper is to prove, by somewhat different methods, similar inequalities for more general weight functions.In what follows, for p ≧ 1, p′ is the exponent conjugate to p, given by l/p + l/p′ = 1. In order to extend Nevanlinna’s first and second fundamental theorems to arbitrary analytic mappings between Riemann surfaces, Sario [8, 9] introduced a kernel function on an arbitrary Riemann surface generalizing the elliptic kernel on the Riemann sphere. Because of the importance of the potential theoretic method in the value distribution theory, we discussed potentials of Sario’s kernel in [4]. In that paper the validty of Frostman’s maximum principle for Sario’s potentials was left unsettled. The main object of this paper is to resolve this question (Theorem 1). As a consequence the fundamental theorem of the potential theory is obtained in its complete form for Sario’s potentials (Theorem 2).

The purpose of this paper is to consider a representation for the elements of a linear topological space in the form of a σ-integral over a linearly ordered subset of V; this ordered subset is what will be called an L basis. The formal definition of an L basis is essentially an abstraction from ideas used, often tacitly, in proofs of many of the theorems concerning integral representations for continuous linear functionals on function spaces.The L basis constructed in this paper differs in several basic ways from the integral basis considered by Edwards in [5]. Since the integrals used here are of Hellinger type rather than Radon type one has in the approximating sums for the integral an immediate and natural analogue to the partial sum operators of summation basis theory.

In this paper we give some results on the extensions of Lie algebras, with emphasis on the case of prime characteristic, although part of the paper is also of interest at characteristic 0. An extension of a Lie algebra L is a pair (E, π), where £ is a Lie algebra and π is a homomorphism of E onto L. The kernel K of the extension is ker π.

By an Euler polyhedron of valence three or a trivalent convex polyhedron in Euclidean 3-space (4) we mean in the present paper an Euler polyhedron in the sense of Steinitz (8, p. 113), such that each vertex is incident with exactly three edges.In the present paper we establish a theorem concerning the colouring of trivalent polyhedra. A specialization of this theorem solves the following problem implicit in Eberhard (1, p. 84): Does there exist a trivalent Euler polyhedron with an odd number of faces such that the number of edges incident with any face is divisible by three?

Let R be a field and S a separable algebraic closure of R with galois group R. In [8] Harrison succeeded in describing R/′R in terms of R only. More precisely, he constructed a certain complex (R, Q/Z) and proved Homc, where Homc denotes continuous homomorphisms and H2 stands for the second cohomology group of the complex . In this paper, which is mainly expository in nature, we reexamine Harrison’s proof and show how [8] connects with Kummer theory and the theory of galois algebras [16]. We emphasize that most of the ideas on which this paper is based originate in [8].

The central distribution of the second largest (smallest) root following the Fisher-Girshick-Hsu-Roy distribution under certain null-hypothesis has been derived in series form by Pillai and Al-Ani [6]. In this paper the noncentral distributions of the second largest roots in the MANOVA situation, the canonical correlation, and equality of two covariance matrices are obtained. Further, the distribution of the second largest root of the covariance matrix is obtained as a limiting case. The largest root and its noncentral distributions have been considered already by Pillai and Sugiyama [7] for the situations stated above. However, in the present paper, the joint densities of the largest and the second largest roots are derived in all the above cases from which the distributions of the largest roots can be obtained, although in more elaborate forms.

If G is a finite group which has a faithful complex representation of degree nit is said to be a linear group of degree n. It is convenient to consider only unimodular irreducible representations. For n ≦ 4 these groups have been known for a long time. An account may be found in Blichfeldt's book (1). For n= 5 they were determined by Brauer in (4). In (4), many properties of linear groups of prime degree pwere determined for pa prime greater than or equal to 5.In a forthcoming series of papers these results will be extended and the linear groups of degree 7 determined. In the first paper, some general results on linear groups of degree p, p≧ 7, will be given. These results will later be applied to the prime p = 7.

We say a (plane) set A contains all sets of some type if, for each B of type , there is a subset of A that is congruent to B. Recently, Besicovitch and Rado [3] and independently, Kinney [5] have constructed sets of plane measure zero containing all circles. In these papers it is pointed out that the set of all similar rectangles, some sets of confocal conies and other such classes of sets can be contained in sets of plane measure zero, but all these generalizations rely in some way on the symmetry, or similarity of the sets within the given type.In this paper we construct a set of plane measure zero containing all finite polygonal arcs (i.e., the one-dimensional boundaries of all polygons with a finite number of sides) with slightly stronger results if we restrict our attention to k-gons for some fixed k.

In this paper we deal with the number of zeros of a solution of the nth order linear differential equation1.1where the functions pj(z) (j = 0, 1, …, n – 2) are assumed to be regular in a given domain D of the complex plane. The differential equation (1.1) is called disconjugate in D, if no (non-trivial) solution of (1.1) has more than (n – 1) zeros in D. (The zeros are counted by their multiplicity.)The ideas of this paper are related to those of Nehari (7; 9) on second order differential equations. In (7), he pointed out the following basic relationship. The function1.2where y1(z) and y2(z) are two linearly independent solutions of1.3is univalent in D, if and only if no solution of equation(1.3) has more than one zero in D, i.e., if and only if(1.3) is disconjugate in D.

In a previous paper a branching Poisson process model was derived to explain deviations from a Poisson process in computer failure patterns. Physically the deviations arise because an attempt to repair a computer is not always successful and the failure recurs a relatively short time later. In this paper we discuss the implications of this model for the use and maintenance of computers.

This paper treats the well known model of sib mating of individuals with autosomal genes; a single locus is studied. The general derivations are valid for any number of alleles. At the end of the paper, some simple examples are included; here several familiar results concerning models for two alleles are obtained as special cases of the general theory.

In previous papers (7; 8), we have investigated certain properties of general function algebras which may be regarded as generalizations or analogues of familiar results in the theory of analytic functions of several complex variables. This investigation is continued and expanded in the present paper. The main results concern a notion of holomorphic convexity for the general situation. We also extend somewhat several of the results obtained in the earlier papers.

In a recent paper by Douglas Underwood [8] several definitions of “associated prime divisors” were discussed and shown to be unique. In this note we produce a fifth type, which is due to W. Krull, and is found in his classical paper [2] and further discussed by B. Banaschewski in[1].Historically this characterization considerably predates the other four definitions.Throughout this note,Rdenotes a commutative ring with unity, and all ideals and elements are assumed to be in such a ring. We shall let upper case letters, most frequently the beginning of the alphabet, denote ideals and lower case letters, elements ofR.On the whole, our terminology will be that of [9]. We do, however, take exception with [9] in two instances, viz.

The classification of Riemann surfaces has largely reached its completion. The purpose of the present paper is to lay the foundation for a new intriguing field in the classification theory: Riemannian spaces with Euclidean metrics. The paper is self-contained, both for the Riemann surface expert and the reader whose main interest is with higher dimensions. The significance of locally Euclidean spaces lies, first of all, in that their function-theoretic nature differs for dimensions n>2 and n=2. The existence or nonexistence of Green's functions and positive or bounded harmonic functions in Rn, punctured Rn, and in the punctured flat torus offer simple examples. A striking phenomenon is that, despite such differences, the basic inclusion relations remain valid. Moreover, capacities and null-classes can be defined for components of point sets in Rn.

In this paper we consider the value distribution of a meromorphic function whose behaviour is prescribed along a spiral. The existence of extremely wild holomorphic functions is established. Indeed a very weak form of one of our results would be that there are holomorphic functions (in the unit disc or the plane) for which every curve “tending to the boundary” is a Julia curve.The theorems in this paper generalize results of Gavrilov [7], Lange [9], and Seidel [11].I wish to express my thanks to Professor W. For the most part we will be dealing with the metric space (D, ρ) where D is the unit disc, |z| < 1, and ρ is the non-Euclidean hyperbolic metric on D. The theorems of the present paper deal with conditions which are necessary and sufficient in order that a solvable or nilpotent infinite group should have a completely reducible matrix representation over a given algebraically closed field.It is known (17) that a locally nilpotent group of matrices is always solvable. Thus the first theorem of the present paper is a partial generalization of Theorem 1 of (16), which states:If G is a locally nilpotent subgroup of the full linear group GL(n, P) over a perfect field P, then G is completely reducible if and only if each matrix of G is diagonizable (by a similarity transformation over some extension field of P).

The topology of abstract 2-metric (area-metric) spaces has been the object of study in recent papers of Gähler (1) and Froda (2). The geometric properties of such spaces, however, have remained largely untouched since the initial work of Menger (3). As in ordinary metric spaces, a notion of 2-betweenness, or interiorness, can be easily defined in 2-metric spaces. In abstract metric spaces the betweenness relation is characterized among all relations defined on each triple of points of every metric space by six natural properties (4, pp. 33-40; 5). The purpose of this paper is to prove a similar theorem characterizing the relation of 2-betweenness in 2-metric spaces.

This paper is a continuation of two papers [4], [5] and brings out the solution of the ballot problem in its general form.In [5], Narayana has considered a generalised occupancy problem which can be viewed as a problem in compositions of integers. In what follows, we use the definitions of [6].

The purpose of this paper is to continue the work of [7]. Throughout the paper all notations shall have the same meanings as those in [7]; that is, the ring R is commutative with identity, B(R) is the set of idempotents in R, Spec B(R) is the set of prime ideals in B(R), and Ue for e in B(R) denotes the set {x/x in Spec B(R) with 1—e in x}. Then from [6] we know that {Ue/e in B(R)} forms a basic open set for a topology imposed in Spec B(R) and this topological space is totally disconnected, compact and Hausdorff.

Let N be a finite set of n elements. A collection ﹛S1, S2, … , Sm﹜ of subsets of N is called a determining collection if an arbitrary subset T of N is uniquely determined by the cardinalities of the intersections Si ⋂ T, 1 ≤ i ≤ m. The purpose of this paper is to study the minimum value D(n) of m for which a determining collection of m subsets exists.This problem can be expressed as a coin-weighing problem (1; 7).In a recent paper Cantor (1) showed that D(n) = O(n/log log n), thus proving a conjecture of N. J. Fine (3) that D(n) = o(n). More recently Erdös and Rényi (2), Söderberg and Shapiro (7), Berlekamp, Mills, and Leo Moser have independently found proofs that D(n) = O(n/log n).

M(x) = max[kj Mk _ x]. M(x) + 1 is then the first passage time out of the interval ( oo, x] for the random walk process S,. In this paper we shall concern ourselves with just those cases in which M(x) is a proper random variable with EM(x) < co and, when suitably normed, possesses a limit distribution as x -) co. It will be shown that M(x) can possess such a limit if and only if the random variables Xi belong to the domain of attraction of one of a certain group of stable laws and the limit law will be obtained under these circumstances. This result (Theorem 2) constitutes a generalization from the case of non-negative summands of various limit results of classical renewal theory (see for example Feller [6], 359-360). The significance of this type of generalization has previously been explored in Heyde [8]; Theorem 2 of this paper is in fact an extension of Theorem 4 of [8]. The existence of certain formulae analogous to Poisson's summation formula (9, pp. 60-64),where αβ = 2π, α > 0, and Fc(x) is the Fourier cosine transform of f(x), but involving number-theoretic functions as coefficients, was first demonstrated by Voronoï (10) in 1904. He proved thatwhere r(n) is an arithmetic function,/(x) is continuous in (a, b) and a(x) and i?(x) are analytic functions dependent on τ(n). Later, numerous papers were published by various authors giving formulae of this type involving d(n), the number of divisors of n (3), and rp(n), the number of ways of expressing n as the sum of p squares of integers (8).In 1937, Ferrar (4) developed a general theory of summation formulae, using complex analysis. Around that time, Guinand (5) also published papers where he developed the general theory from a different point of view. He applied the theory of mean convergence for the transforms of class L2(0, ∞ ). Later in 1950, Bochner (1) gave a general summation formula.

In two previous papers (see4;5) O. T. O'Meara and I investigated the problem of generating the integral orthogonal group of a quadratic form by symmetries in the case where the underlying ring of integers was the integers of a dyadic local field of characteristic not 2. In this paper, the investigation is concerned with a local field of characteristic 2. As in (5), only the unimodular case is treated. As in (4) and (5), groupsS(L), Xh(L), andO(L) are introduced for a unimodular latticeLand the relationship betweenS(L) andO(L) studied. As in the previously cited papers, generation by symmetries means thatS(L) =O(L). The following result is obtained.

In an earlier paper [5], the author defined a zeta function on the real sphere , whereas in the present paper it is proposed to define one on the unitary sphere where xi's are complex numbers and their complex conjugates. Following E. Cartan, harmonics on the unitary sphere are defined and then a zeta function formed just as in the case of a real sphere. The unitary sphere is seen to behave like an even-dimensional closed manifold, since results similar to the ones proved by the author and A. Pleijel [6] for closed manifolds (of even dimensions) are observed here also.

In a recent paper (3), Grünbaum has found a general and unifying setting for a number of properties of some special lines associated with a planar convex body. Besides various interesting results, two conjectures are stated and two kinds of convexity and polygonal connectedness are introduced.In the present paper, we shall prove one of Grünbaum's conjectures (§ 3, Theorem 1); we consider the other in § 4 and establish some related results in §§ 5 and 6. Six-partite problems are studied in this general setting (§ 7) and a question raised by Ceder (2) is answered. We give a generalization of the notion of a continuous family of curves in § 8, and discuss some new kinds of connectedness in § 9.

In this paper, some results on the asymptotic behavior of Markov renewal processes with auxiliary paths (MRPAP's) proved in other papers ([28], [29]) are applied to queueing theory. This approach to queueing problems may be regarded as an improvement of the method of Fabens [7] based on the theory of semi-Markov processes. The method of Fabens was also illustrated by Lambotte in [18], [32]. In the present paper the ordinary M/G/1 queue is generalized to allow service times to depend on the queue length immediately after the previous departure. Such models preserve the MRPAP-structure of the ordinary M/G/1 system. Recently, the asymptotic behaviour of the embedded Markov chain (MC) of this queueing model was studied by several authors. One aim of this paper is to answer the question of the relationship between the limiting distribution of the embedded MC and the limiting distribution of the original process with continuous time parameter. It turns out that these two limiting distributions coincide. Moreover some properties of the embedded MC and the embedded semi-Markov process are established. The discussion of the M/G/1 queue closes with a study of the rate-of-convergence at which the queueing process attains equilibrium. The purpose of the second part of the present paper is to explore an extension of the ordinary GI/M/1 queue. The inter-arrival times are considered to depend on the queue length immediately after the previous arrival. The generalized queueing systems M/G/1 and GI/M/1 may be called dual systems. Thus, analogous results are obtained for the GI/M/1 queue by paralleling the methods used in the analysis of the M/G/1 queue.
