It is, in fact, a contribution to the history of one side of the old Semitic-Greek religion.

This article focuses on the book "Bitter Lemons," by Lawrence Durrell, with specific reference to the Englishman and writer, Lawrence Durrell, and his relation with the U.S. This book is about Cyprus. Durrell has achieved something relatively rare in this country. He has acquired a literary reputation without benefit of large sales. Durrell writes of strange places, strange people, all enveloped and obscured in his misty feverish romanticism. In a preface to "Bitter Lemons," the author states that this is not a political book. The really sad thing is that Cyprus is strategicalIy useless to the British and the Turks, and of only sentimental value to the Greeks. The dangers that the present situation presents cannot be over-estimated; the first blow struck by Turks against Greeks in Cyprus is potentially the first blow struck in a new Balkan war. The stark dangers presented by the Cyprus situation today make it of urgent and immediate concern on the international level.
