The article presents information on the norms for the Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory with student nurses. Clinical experience has indicated the need for special norms on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) for college students and other groups such as student nurses. This paper presents MMPI T scores secured from a normative group of 168 student nurses. The scores of freshman student nurses did not differ significantly from those of the whole group.

The article states that the investigation is an exploratory attempt to study the effects of mild affective stimulation on psychomotor performance. Although the approach of employing simultaneous stimuli is not new and had been used in early conditioning experiments, the setting in which the present technique is employed is apparently an innovation. The control group consisted of 15 female affiliate student nurses, age ranged from 19-24, with the mean age of 20, and functioning on at least an average intelligence level. No psychiatric deviations were evident clinically. No difficulty in learning was present.

The article focuses on a study which explores some of the basic factors determining the interpretation of human diads, or combinations of two people in visible and apparent relation to each other. Dadic relations constitute the most primal and ubiquitous of all social relations. The laws governing their interpretation can be seen as general laws of social perception at the same time that individual idiosyncrasy in the interpretation should constitute an illuminating revelation of individual differences. The subjects used in this experiment consisted of two groups including 60 primary and secondary-school teachers enrolled in summer school and 33 student nurses at the local state hospital. In the analysis of variance of the data from the summer-school students, four dimensions were involved, namely, rotation of the male figure, rotation of the female figure, elevation pattern, and sex of subject. There appears to be very substantial agreement concerning the interpretation of diadic profiles with respect to the acceptance of each figure by the other when the relation of these figures is substantially varied according to the schema described in the article.

The method of factor analysis was applied to data from a previous study in order to determine the influence of response sets in tests of authoritarianism. The subjects were 88 student nurses. Usual and reversed content forms of the California F scale and the Parental Attitude Research Instrument (PARI) were used. Measures of acquiescence, opposition, and extremes sets were derived from these tests. Response set measures and test measures were intercorrelated and the resulting matrix was factor analyzed. The following factors were extracted: Factor I, an Acquiescence Set factor; Factor II, an Extremes Set factor; Factor III, an Authoritarian factor; Factor IV, Acquiescence factor specific to the F scale. The loadings of the F scale on the factors indicates that about 36 per cent of the variance can be accounted for by the general Authoritarian Factor and about 20 per cent by the primary Acquiescence Factor. The corresponding percentages for PARI Factor A score were 26 and 39. The PARI Factor A score, measuring Authoritarian-Control, loaded negatively on the Extremes Set Factor. The results for the F scale derived from the factor analysis were similar to those obtained using the Chapman-Bock model. The results on the PARI Authoritarian factor were not comparable to those from the Chapman-Bock model. The general conclusion drawn was that while content is an important determiner of response to the F scale its influence is only slightly greater than that of acquiescence. This article presents a study on sex, love and marriage questions of senior nursing students. The data for this study was collected from groups of senior nursing students who were taking their affiliation at the New Jersey State Hospital at Greystone Park. The girls were in their third year of nursing and had been at this mental hospital for several weeks prior to their participation in the round table discussions. They were told, several days before the discussions were held, that they were to meet with the director of the Mental Hygiene Clinic, and that they were free to ask him any questions that were on their minds, especially those they would hesitate to discuss with their parents or teachers. These questions were to be dropped anonymously into a closed question box, so that identification of individual questioners would be impossible. Questions were collected in this manner from 50 different classes of nursing affiliates who were at the hospital from 1942 to 1946. All told, over two thousand affiliate nurses were included in these classes. Every question was discussed at a round table meeting, and then was filed for future reference.

The article presents a study of the socialization patterns of student nurses. It has been suggested that socialization of an adult into an occupational role involves a sequential process. Socialization into a profession takes place in three analytically distinct phases, each involving learning of the cultural content of the role and self- identification. During the first phase, the person shifts his attention from the broad, socially derived goals which led him to choose the profession to the goal of proficiency in specific work tasks. During the second, certain significant others in the work force become student's main reference group. Third, a student internalizes the values of the occupational group and adopts the behaviors it prescribes. These three phases may overlap, but in general they constitute a sequence. Differences between socialization in early childhood and socialization into an adult role have been emphasized. The professional school accomplishes this transformation by emphasizing the mastery of technical skills and knowledge as a prerequisite for professional status.

The article proposes a new technique for evaluating motives, using length of time spent looking at heterosexual stimuli relative to time spent looking at neutral stimuli as the measure of approach-avoidance tendencies, and correlating this measure with a criterion of ratings of approach-avoidance behavior of 36 neuropsychiatric patients toward a group of student nurses. It was predicted that a positive relationship would be found between these measures. The procedure consisted of allowing the subjects to look at a set of 60 slides, 30 of which contained pictures of heterosexual activities, and 30 of which contained neutral pictures. The length of time spent looking at each picture was measured. The results indicated that there was a significant relationship between response duration scores and approach/avoidance ratings. A tentative explanation of the fact that avoiders tended to look at all slides longer than persons rated as approachers, yet looked at heterosexual slides for shorter periods of time than neutral slides, while the reverse was true of approachers, was advanced in terms of researcher P. McReynolds' theory of motivation. The possible usefulness of the response duration technique for the study of motivated behavior is discussed.

This article examines the role of socio-economic status on nursing students' decision to pursue collegiate or diploma programs. Based on some studies it can be assumed that children are subjected to differential cultural conditioning in their homes so that some are motivated to make considerable sacrifice in order to obtain an education while others are not. If this theory is correct, it should apply to candidates for the nursing profession. Since modern developments in health care have created a demand for both the collegiate and the diploma-trained nurse, students who now choose nursing as a career have a choice between the non-collegiate and the collegiate program. It can be stated that there is rather general agreement that the factors which do determine whether a high school graduate will go on to college are manifold. They are generally summarized under the following; mental ability, social expectations, individual motivation, financial ability, and propinquity to an educational institution. Lack of desire to attend college is still the most common barrier to college-going and the factors involved in this lack of motivation seem to be cultural rather than economic although it is difficult to separate the two in concrete cases.

This article looks at the Associate Degree Program, a system of preparing registered nurses in the United States. It compares the merits of the different programs and pinpoints some of the factors, which are provoking the present reappraisal of nursing education. The concentrated program, with emphasis on principles rather than procedure, prepares graduates to become competent, once on the job. The trend to preparation in higher education institutions is growing--associate degree programs are drawing increasing numbers of students and hospital schools are declining.

This study analyzes questionnaire responses from senior nursing students in three associate degree programs (N = 116), three hospital-affiliated diploma schools (N = 116), and three baccalaureate, university-affiliated schools of nursing (N = 148). Personality characteristics, role-conflict expectations, and commitment orientations are compared both across and within the three institutional types. It is found that type of socializing agency is not associated with differential professional, organizational, and clinical specialty commitments, but is reflected in expectations concerning professional role conflicts. Students passing through various educational structures are best differentiated in terms of personality characteristics, such as interpersonal trust and authoritarianism, which may reflect self-selection more than formal professional socialization.
