The article discusses the mechanical methods of enlargement production and related processes in use at the U.S. Library of Congress. The production speed, which has been initiated by the continuous enlargers just described with their continuous rolls of sensitized paper in place of the cut sheets used in the past, is maintained in the next step, the automatic processing of the exposed paper. An important feature of these film processors consists of a continuous replenishment apparatus which maintains all the processing solutions at constant strength regardless of the footage of paper that passes through the solutions.

Frequencies of the number of references per paper were obtained for the information science literature represented by ail papers cited in Information Science Abstracts, volumes 1-6 11966-1971). Almost one-third of the papers had no references. Half of them had four references or fewer; two-thirds had eight or fewer references. The ratio of papers without references to those with references was proposed as a measure of the scholarly status of a field. This article presents abstracts of papers presented at the eighth annual meeting of the association for the psychophysiological study of sleep at Colorado during March 22-24, 1968. Some of the topics of presented in the papers included Cortical Monophasic wave activity during Rapid Eye Movement Sleep (REM) and Wakefulness. Preliminary note on the sleep and waking cycle in the desert hedgehog (Paraechinus Hypomelus). Name of some of the psychologists who contributed articles during the meeting were Francois Michel, J. Allan Hobson and many others.

This article presents abstracts of papers presented at the 1964 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology in Montreal, Canada, on December 28-30, 1964. The paper entitled Father-Daughter Incest: Treatment of the Family, reports on the treatment of twenty families with the problem of father-daughter incest where the father did not serve a prison sentence but was placed on probation. The paper entitled Evaluation of Records in Delinquency Research, focuses on the Southern California Records Matching Project which deals with the manner in which the records of delinquency adjudicating agencies at the local level maybe linked with Federal Census Records in order to maximize the efficiency of data collection and analysis. The paper entitled Juvenile Court Judge's Institute, summarized attacks on the Juvenile Court from any quarters, the weaknesses that inspire these attacks, and the crucial role that the Juvenile Court has to play in spearheading the introduction of personalized justice in the administration of the criminal law. The paper entitled A Spectrum of Sexual Problems Found in an Out-Patient Setting, focuses on the Forensic Clinic which was established in 1956. It is an out-patient division of the Toronto Psychiatric Hospital operated by the Ontario Department of Health under provincial statute.

A new form of document coupling called co-citation is defined os the frequency with which two documents are cited together. The co-citation frequency of two scientific papers can be determined by comparing lists of citing documents in the Science Citation index and counting identical entries. Networks of co-cited papers can be generated for specific scientific specialties, and an example is drawn from the literature of particle physics. Co-citation patterns are found to differ significantly from bibliographic coupling patterns, but to agree generally with patterns of direct citation. Clusters of co-cited papers provide a new way to study the specialty structure of science. They may provide a new approach to indexing and to the creation of SDI profiles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article focuses on determining foliar characteristics and the transpiring power of plant leaves. It stresses that transpiring power represents the summed total of all the conditions inside the leaf that either accelerate or retard transpiration. This paper aimed to measure the transpiring power of leaves at different hours of the day by means of standardized cobalt chloride paper and to compare the values obtained with those derived from porometer readings. This article also discusses the hygrometric paper method.

Three methods for evaluation of serum lipoprotein abnormalities were compared: paper electrophoresis using buffer containing albumin, ultracentrifugation at d 1.21, and thin-layer starch-gel electrophoresis. Analyses by paper electrophoresis and by ultracentrifugation of 109 sera of patients with cholesterol levels between 78 and 1150 mg/100 ml showed that the electrophoretic procedure while not quantitative was an effective procedure for detecting and helping in classification of the type of serum lipoprotein abnormality. Paper electrophoresis is a valuable procedure in screening for lipoprotein abnormalities and can be used as a guide for additional studies. Thin-layer starchgel electrophoresis did not always give results comparable to those of the other two procedures. In study of certain sera (for example, in pigeon serum and some myeloma sera) lipoprotein subfractions were more clearly resolved by starch-gel electrophoresis than by paper electrophoresis or ultracentrifugation. Ultracentrifugal and starch-gel electrophoretic techniques can be used effectively when more complete information is needed or when unusual materials are being studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A comparison has been made of human serum lipoprotein analysis by agarose gel and paper electrophoresis with a standard method of analytical ultracentrifugation. Samples were obtained from 28 patients with various disorders of lipoprotein metabolism. Correspondence was shown between the following electrophoretic and ultracentrifugal fractions: β and S 0-20; pre-β and S 20-400; α and total HDL. The deviations observed with the electrophoretic methods, though sizable, were smaller than the usual clinically significant abnormalities. Semiquantitative application is there fore justified. Agarose gel electrophoresis is slightly more difficult than paper electrophoresis, but gives improved resolution of pre-β- and β-lipoproteins and better densitometric scans. Evidence was also presented that the agarose method, when used in conjuction which ultracentrifugation, may be a valuable research technique for the study of lipoprotein properties. This article reports that the study was undertaken to test whether titles of chemical papers are becoming more informative and whether uninformative titles of chemical papers are being eliminated since the advent of the KWIC index in 1958. One of the strongest objections voiced against such indexes is that titles of papers are unsatisfactory as a basis for subject index entries because titles are not composed with indexing in mind. The adequacy of titles as a source of subject content clues has been given much attention in the last decade, and many studies have been published on the subject.

A reproducible paper chromatographic procedure has been developed for resolving a mixture consisting of 1-mono-, 1,3-di-, and triglycerides, cholesterol, and cholesteryl esters. The separation is accomplished, using silicic acid impregnated glass fiber filter paper as the chromatographic medium and various ethyl ether-isooctane mixtures as the solvent systems. A reagent consisting of 1:1 concentrated sulfuric acid: water has been introduced for visualizing the lipides on the chromatogram and for distinguishing between glycerides and cholesterol-containing lipides. Unsaturation in the fatty acid moiety of the mono-, di-, and triglycerides had no detectable effect on the R values of these substances. Fatty acid chain length did not affect the R of the cholesteryl esters with the solvent systems studied. Increasing the percentage ethyl ether in the solvent system caused an increase in the R values of each lipide not moving at the solvent front. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method is described by which unsaturated fatty acid esters can be separated and identified by reversed-phase paper chromatography. The procedure is based upon the formation of the mercuric acetate addition compounds of the esters and the detection of the compounds on the chromatograms, using the sensitive color reaction with diphenylcarbazone. The application of this technique to the analysis of the component unsaturated acids of natural fats has been examined, and tetradecenoic acid in olive oil and hexadecenoic acid in linseed oil both formerly unidentified have been detected as the minor component acids by means of the method. The preliminary investigation on the absorption spectra of diphenylcarbazone complexes derived from the addition compounds has been made to bring the method into quantitative use. From the lipopolysaccharide of Escherichia coli U41/14 (serotype 03 :K2ab(L) : H2) an unusual amino sugar was isolated. By sequential oxidation with periodate and hypoiodite and by oxidation with periodate, followed by detection of acetaldehyde formed, the ammo sugar was characterized as a 2-amino- dideoxyaldose. The hydrochloride of the amino sugar, in comparison to those of 2-amino-2, 6-dideoxy-D-glucose, 2-amino-2,6-dideoxy-L-galactose, 2-amino-2, 6-dideoxy-D-mannose, 2-amino-2, 6-di- deoxy-D-allose, and 2-amino-2, 6-dideoxy-D-gulose, was studied with aid of ion exchange column chromatography. The N-acetylated amino sugar was compared with the N-acetylated reference amino sugars with regard to their relative mobihties in paper chromatography. The ammo sugar alcohols and reference amino sugar alcohols were studied using paper electrophoresis in molybdate buffer. On the basis of the results obtained the unknown amino sugar was identified as 2-amino- 2,6-dideoxymannose (rhamnosamine). Its optical rotation showed it to be of the L-configuration. The article focuses on the interaction recorder, an electronic punched paper tape unit for recording speech behavior during interviews. The study of verbal interview behavior results in the accumulation of (and the ultimate necessity to process) large quantities of data. This is true whether the investigative focus is on such global phenomena as personality traits or personality change, analysis of the content or themes expressed, or on such structural characteristics as frequency and durations of single units of speech and silence. With both the Chapple Interaction Chronograph and the Interaction Recorder, a trained observer is needed in order to record the interview interaction.

The article presents abstracts of papers presented to the seventh annual meeting of the Association for the Psychophysiological Study of Sleep (APSS). The seventh annual meeting of the APSS was held at the Miramar Hotel, Santa Monica, California in April 1967. APSS was founded in 1961 for the purpose of promoting both formal and informal exchange of information among workers from various disciplines with a common interest in the psychophysiology of sleep.

Research and developments in printing, photography and in Photronic Onset are rooted in the need to advance the science and craft of accurate recording, with or without printing plates. Photography requires wet chemicals, considerable time to process a negative and print on paper, and to dry both negative and paper. There is a wide range of requirements for the reproduction of copy for many purposes in commercial, educational, and governmental business systems.
