Contemporary Romanian agriculture synthesizes socialist theory and national goals through a diversified agricultural system emphasizing grain. Wheat is sown in all but the most unfavorable areas, and measures to reduce crop losses by drought and winterkill are the prime agricultural tasks. State agricultural enterprises play a leading role in the plan for increased, stable wheat harvests. Dragalina, a 7,306 hectare state agricultural enterprise comprised of seven farms and employing 250 full-time and 400 part-time employees, is an example of the Party's successes and failures in wheat. Wheat yields in 1972 were well below the enterprise potential, and the limiting factor was perceived to be quality of labor and incentive. Wheat in Romania reflects the Party's planned modification of traditional spatial patterns, socialist agricultural organization, and priorities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
