Future sediment transport from the North Sea coasts to the Dutch Wadden Sea for various future sea level scenarios has been studied because it influences the future sand nourishment demand for the maintenance of the coastline and because it determines bio-geomorphological development of the Wadden Sea. The present study focuses on two questions which have not yet been considered in the previous modelling studies using ASMITA: How will the transport develop around drowning of the intertidal flats in the Wadden Sea? How will tidal range change influence the future sediment exchange? By using SLR scenarios with faster acceleration and running the simulations for longer periods of time some inlets exhibited drowning, i.e., where the tidal flat volume vanishes. When drowning occurs, the sediment import rate approaches a maximum or a minimum, depending on the initial morphological state of the tidal inlet system. This maximum or minimum rate for a certain tidal inlet system depends on the SLR scenario. Theoretical analysis as well as modelling results show that tidal range change will influence the sediment import to the Wadden Sea. A tidal range increase will cause a decrease of the sediment demand in the Wadden Sea resulting into less sediment import to the Wadden Sea. It is thus important to study the tidal range development in the Wadden Sea by considering the interaction between SLR, tidal range change and morphological development in the system. It is further concluded that the empirical relation used in the previous studies is not representative of conditions in a tidal basin with fixed basin area, even though this relation has been derived from field observations in many tidal inlet systems worldwide. Tidal inlet structures are engineering projects with associated benefits related to flood control, water quality enhancement, and coastal protection. This study analyzes the performance of hydraulic gates on a stabilized inlet in estuarine systems by developing a simplified hydraulic model that considers inlet and outlet water levels. The proposed model was applied to the stabilized tidal inlet structure in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. This model offers a practical tool for engineers and designers operating estuarine systems. The analysis focuses on the coastal lagoon of Ciénaga de la Virgen. The proposed model was successfully calibrated using two water sensors, with extreme input and outlet flow rates of approximately 260 m3/s and 110 m3/s, respectively. The average daily output volume in the system is 3,361,000 m3, while the average daily input volume is 3,200,000 m3. Consequently, the manipulation of the opening gates results in a decrease in the estuarine water level, potentially by as much as 25 cm, which local authorities can use to make decisions to reduce extreme water levels during flooding events. Data collection, processing, and map editing were realized within the sublittoral mapping program of Lower Saxony national waters carried out by the NLWKN – Coastal Research Station. The map is the result of the combined use of multibeam echosounder, sub-bottom profiler, and ground-truth data. The sediment characterization is achieved by an unsupervised approach using an Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) on a normalized backscatter mosaic, verified by nineteen sediment samples. Morphometrical parameters and sub-bottom data provided important information to identify hard substrates and bedforms.

Shoreline evolution over the last two centuries was analysed for Dundrum Bay, Co. Down, Northern Ireland, using historical and recent shoreline datasets from 1833 to 2020. The area of interest comprises two sandy beaches and vegetated coastal dune fields, Newcastle–Murlough and Ballykinler, separated by an inlet channel which connects the inner with the outer bay. Twenty‐four temporal shorelines were extracted, and a quantitative assessment of their positional uncertainty was performed. This was combined with analysis of foredune volume variations by applying the Structure‐from‐Motion‐Multi‐View‐Stereo technique to 1963 aerial photography and comparing it with a 2014 Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) dataset to better inform on links between the sediment dynamics and the observed shoreline changes. Storm events were identified using recorded extreme water levels (EWLs) (1901–2020) and hindcasted wave data (1948–2020). In the first 87 years, the shoreline was largely stable, and change was focused at the inlet area. In the 20th century, localised retreat characterised the western (Newcastle–Murlough) sector, whereas the eastern sector (Ballykinler) experienced general shoreline advance. The rate and extent of shoreline retreat in the western sector increased post‐1997 in concert with accelerated accretion at Ballykinler. The strongest erosional episodes were recorded in 1920–1951, 1997–2005, and 2012–2014. Although no direct link was established between single storms and shoreline retreat rates, the three major retreat periods coincided with several consecutive EWLs or EWLs with a return period greater than 100 years. The study of mechanisms and the accurate simulation of riprap movement caused by complex hydrodynamics are significant for harbor, channel and coastal engineering. Field measurement of current and riprap drift distance was conducted for a dike project in the port of Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, China. Meanwhile, a well-validated three-dimensional hydrodynamic model was developed to study and analyze the riprap movement process and the influence of project position combined with the theoretical movement equation of riprap. At the moment of maximum flood, the riprap drift distance is greater than at the moment of maximum ebb. The riprap drift distance increase as the tidal inlet width decreases, which follows a second-order exponential distribution. The riprap mass reduces the riprap drift distance, and the magnitude of the reduction diminishes gradually as the riprap mass increases. The formation of sandbars, spits and shoals are common at the inlet mouth particularly along coasts dominated by longshore sediment transport. These formations act as barriers, thus preventing the ingress of tidal flow. Sandbar and spit formation can be preferably averted by the construction of a pair of training walls, after which monitoring the behaviour of the stability of the tidal inlet is of prime importance. In cases where the tidal inlet meets a riverine estuary, the inlet dimensions and rate of littoral transport are primarily governed by the volume of water exchanged at the inlet mouth and the ebbing tidal currents, respectively. This paper discusses the case study of a micro-tidal inlet at Karaikal (10°54′52″N; 79°51′09″E), situated along the southeast coast of the Indian peninsula. This inlet coincides with the mouth of the Arasalar estuary, a tributary of the Cauvery river. A numerical model using the finite volume method is applied to estimate morphodynamic changes in the inlet channel driven by tide-induced currents and riverine discharge during the North-East monsoon season and the same has been validated through field measured data. ABSTRACT The Mundaú-Manguaba Estuary Lagoon Complex (CELMM), located on the coast of Alagoas state in Northeastern Brazil, consists of two choked coastal lagoons connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a series of narrow channels, establishing a single tidal inlet, which dynamically alters their position. This study uses the modeling system SisBaHiA® (in Portuguese, Sistema Hidrodinâmico Ambiental) and Trophic Index (TRIX) to evaluate how morphological changes in the CELMM can influence the water quality of the lagoons. The results showed that water quality is mainly influenced by river discharge regimes, with no major changes in the region of the tidal inlet for the three simulated years (2006, 2014 and 2017). Trophic index showed greater changes in the rainy season, with a decline in values as river discharge increases, mainly in the northwest and central portions of the Mundaú Lagoon. In the Manguaba Lagoon an opposite pattern was found, namely a rise in the Trophic index with increased river discharges.

Wind influence on tidal inlet hydrodynamics is examined using 40 days of wind, water level, and current observations collected in Spring 2019 at Oregon Inlet, NC, a large (1 km wide, 1–13 m deep) meso‐tidal inlet with complex delta systems. Wind velocities through the inlet (ranging 0–18 m/s) are modulated at subtidal timescales and are well correlated (R = 0.87) to a subtidal component of the water level slope through the inlet. The subtidal wind and water level slope are also well correlated to the subtidal current along the principal flow axis in the main inlet channel (R = 0.92 and 0.96, respectively). In combination with findings from previous studies, these findings suggest that regional winds induce the subtidal water level slope through the inlet by causing opposing setup/setdown to either side of the inlet. A force balance at the inlet demonstrates that the wind‐induced pressure gradient forces the subtidal currents, with wave forcing and local wind shear acting as lower‐order influences. The magnitude of the subtidal current is substantial, exceeding that of the tidal currents 45% of the time. Cumulatively, these findings indicate that regional winds exert a first‐order control on the currents at Oregon Inlet and cause irregular hydrodynamic patterns not well described by the traditional inlet classification scheme. Regional geographic characteristics may contribute to the high level of wind influence at Oregon Inlet, but similar processes are likely to be important to net flow dynamics at other inlets with large, shallow inland water bodies. Plain Language Summary: Tidal inlets are constricted coastal channels maintained by the flow and are particularly common along barrier island systems where they have important implications for the flux of sediments along the coast. The traditional tidal inlet classification system is based on the relative strength of tides and waves; however, mounting evidence suggests winds may also be an important control of inlet dynamics. This works uses observations of winds, currents, and changes in water levels at Oregon Inlet, NC, to examine the role of local and regional winds in altering tidal inlet currents. Results suggest that regional winds induce a water level gradient through the inlet that varies over time periods longer than tides (>12 hr), and that this gradient then forces a current through the inlet over the same timescales. The magnitude of the wind induced current exceeds that of the tidal current 45% of the time and far exceeds contributions from waves, implying that winds may play an underappreciated role in tidal inlet dynamics. Improving our understanding of wind control on tidal inlets has important implications for dredging efforts common to tidal inlets, for numerical models simulating island chain evolution, and to the navigation of vessels that use charts to determine times of safe transit based on expected water levels and currents. We present an extensive experimental campaign dedicated to the identification of coherent trajectory patterns owing to flow occurring in tidal environments, characterized by a tidal inlet and a channel with lateral tidal flats. Single and multiple harmonics tides are here reproduced on a large-scale physical model. The study of the large scale macro-vortices, generated by vortex shedding during the flood phase from the inlet barrier, is performed employing the Lagrangian Average Vorticity Deviation (LAVD). The presence of large-scale vortices with a complex dynamics within a tidal period suggested a deeper understanding on the possible environmental implications in terms of transport connections or barriers. Finite Time Lyapunov Exponents are employed in order to recognize stable and unstable manifolds within the flow that are defined as preferred paths along which particles are repelled (forward integration) or attracted (backward).

In this paper, we present a low-cost method designed to monitor recurrent breaching flow slides that impact the security of a beach. This beach, located in France at the inlet of Arcachon Bay, connects a sand spit to a tidal channel while ending at the toe of a coastal defense. Monitoring is based on capturing images and intends to add continuous information to intermittent direct observations so that triggering and influencing factors can be assessed more precisely. The method is based on time-lapse picture collection and processing. The field of view shows successive emerged manifestations of flow slide phenomena, as well as some possibly related environmental elements. On-site application for 576 days provides important indications and details on flow slide event progress and beach recovery. A simple but quantitative analysis of the influence of sand spit topographic changes is proposed as a preliminary approach of the method's suitability for studies of environmental processes in conjunction with coast protection. When longshore transport systems encounter tidal inlets, complex mechanisms are involved in bypassing sand to downdrift barriers. Here, this process is examined at Plum Island Sound and Essex Inlets, Massachusetts, USA. One major finding from this study is that sand is transferred along the coast—especially at tidal inlets—by parcels, in discrete steps, and over decadal-scale periods. The southerly orientation of the main-ebb channel at Plum Island Sound, coupled with the landward migration of bars from the ebb delta to the central portion of the downdrift Castle Neck barrier island, have formed a beach protuberance. During the constructional phase, sand is sequestered at the protuberance and the spit-end of the barrier becomes sediment starved, leading to shoreline retreat and a broadening of the spit platform at the mouth to Essex Bay (downdrift side of Castle Neck). Storm-induced sand transport from erosion of the spit and across the spit platform is washed into Essex Bay, filling channels and enlarging flood deltas. This study illustrates the pathways and processes of sand transfer along the shoreline of a barrier-island/tidal-inlet system and provides an important example of the processes that future hydrodynamic and sediment-transport modeling should strive to replicate. Barrier islands and their backbarrier saltmarshes have a reciprocal relationship: aeolian and storm processes transport sediment from the beaches and dunes to create and build marshes along the landward fringe of the island. In turn, these marshes exert a stabilizing influence on the barrier by widening the barrier system and forming a platform onto which the island migrates, consequently slowing landward barrier migration and inhibiting storm breaching. Here, we present a novel framework for applying these natural interdependencies to managing coastal systems and enhancing barrier-island resilience. Further, we detail application of these principles through a case study of the design of a marsh creation project that showcases the interdisciplinary engagement of scientists, engineers, stakeholders, and policymakers. Specifically, we describe: (1) the ecologic, sedimentologic, stratigraphic, and morphologic data obtained from the southern 4 km of Cedar Island (Virginia, United States) and nearby backbarrier tidal channels, tidal flats, and flood-tidal deltas, and (2) the use of those data to develop an engineering and design plan for the construction of a high (46 ha) and low (42 ha) fringing marsh platform located behind the island, proximal to a former ephemeral inlet. Additionally, we chronicle the process used to narrow five initial alternative designs to the optimal final plan. This process involved balancing best-available existing science and models, considering design and financial constraints, identifying stakeholder preferences, and maximizing restoration benefits of habitat provision and shoreline protection. Construction of this marsh would: (1) provide additional habitat and ecosystem benefits, (2) slow the rapid migration (up to 15 m/yr at present) of the barrier island, and (3) hinder island breaching. Ultimately, this project – presently at the final design and permitting stage – may enhance the storm and sea-level rise resilience of the island, backbarrier marshes and lagoons, and the mainland town community; and provide an example of a novel science-based approach to coastal resilience that could be applied to other global barrier settings.

Existing barrier island facies models are largely based on modern observations. This approach highlights the heterogeneous and dynamic nature of barrier island systems, but it overlooks processes tied to geologic time scales, such as multi-directional motion, erosion, and reworking, and their expressions as preserved strata. Accordingly, this study uses characteristic outcrop expressions from paralic strata of the Upper Cretaceous Straight Cliffs Formation in southern Utah to update models for barrier island motion and preservation to include geologic time-scale processes. Results indicate that the key distinguishing facies and architectural elements of preserved barrier island systems have very little to do with “island” morphology as observed in modern systems. Four facies associations are used to describe and characterize these barrier island architectural elements. Barrier islands occur in association with backbarrier fill (FA1) and internally contain lower and upper shoreface (FA2), proximal upper shoreface (FA3), and tidal channel facies (FA4). Three main architectural elements (barrier island shorefaces, shoreface-dominated inlet fill, and channel-dominated inlet fill) occur independently or in combination to create stacked barrier island deposits. Barrier island shorefaces record progradation, while shoreface-dominated inlet fill records lateral migration, and channel-dominated inlet fill records aggradation within the tidal inlet. Barrier islands are bound by lagoons or estuaries and are distinguished from other shoreface deposits by their internal facies and outcrop geometry, association with backbarrier facies, and position within transgressive successions. Tidal processes, in particular, tidal inlet migration and reworking of the upper shoreface, also distinguish barrier island successions. In sum, this study expands barrier island facies models and provides new recognition criteria to account for the complex geometries of time-transgressive, preserved barrier island deposits.

In order to address the problem of limited water renewal in restricted lagoons of moderate size having at least two tidal inlets, a method is proposed to enhance water exchange between the lagoon and the open sea. The method consists of altering either the amplitude or the phase of the tide in one of the inlets. It is shown in the paper that this will result in an alteration of the function of the lagoon, from a lagoon periodically exchanging water equal to a tidal prism within each tidal cycle with the adjacent water body, towards an effectively flow through system, substantially improving the flushing rate of the lagoon. The method is confirmed by running a series of numerical experiments simulating tidal hydrodynamics in the Papas lagoon. The question of how to alter the tidal amplitude is briefly touched upon, by numerically testing the performance of artificially macro-roughening an inlet and alternatively, designing an inlet to have a meandering shape. Pleistocene strata of the Wadden Sea region are mostly covered by an up to 10m thick sediment wedge deposited during the Holocene transgression. However, tidal inlets cut deep into the Holocene succession, causing Middle Pleistocene to early Holocene glacial and interglacial deposits to outcrop at the channel bottom. To investigate how the lithological properties and/or morphologies of these deposits affect the development of Holocene tidal inlets (e.g. limiting erosional processes), we analysed a series of eight cores to verify three high-resolution sub-bottom transects – and thus – to extend point-based data over a broader area. Furthermore, eight additional new cores (16 WASA cores in total), and 14 reinterpreted cores from the LBEG (Geological Survey of Lower Saxony) log database, were correlated to generate three short cross-sections at the transition from the tidal inlet (Riffgat channel) to the island of Norderney, revealing a number of new aspects for the reconstruction of the Pleistocene palaeoenvironments, i.e. the last two glacials (Saalian and Weichselian) and interglacials (Holsteinian? and Eemian). A succession of Middle Pleistocene lacustrine delta deposits, belonging either to the Holsteinian or the Dömnitz temperate stage, suggests the presence of Elsterian tunnel valleys located below the island. Furthermore, we verified the presence of an Eemian mixed tidal-flat system overlain by an Eemian sand tidal flat below the western head of Norderney which is, in contrast to suggestions from previous studies, not fully eroded in this area. Finally, we demonstrate that the Saalian moraine (Drenthe Main Till) functions as a limiting constraint in the vertical development of the Holocene/modern Riffgat channel. Our results provide a better understanding of the Quaternary stratigraphy of the central Wadden Sea as well as the influence of the subsurface geology on the architecture and evolution of tidal channels. Seagrasses are critical habitats for the recruitment and growth of juvenile penaeid shrimps within estuaries and coastal lagoons. The location of a seagrass bed within the lagoon can determine the value of a particular bed for shrimp populations. Consequently, differences in the abundance of shrimp can be found in seagrasses depending on their location. As shrimp density increases, density-dependent effects on biological parameters are more likely to occur. However, knowledge about densitydependent processes on shrimp populations in nursery habitats remains limited. The present investigation was undertaken to examine the effects of population density on shrimp condition in two selected seagrass beds, located at different distance from a tidal inlet, one 25 km away (distant) and the other 1 km away (nearby), in a subtropical coastal lagoon. The study was based on monthly samplings during one year in Laguna Madre (Mexico), performing a total of 36 shrimp trawls (100m2 each one) within each seagrass bed (n D 3 trawls per bed per month for 12 months). Shrimp density was related to the proximity to the tidal inlet (higher density was consistently observed in the nearby seagrass bed), which in turn adversely affected the condition of both species studied (Penaeus aztecus and P. duorarum). In this regard, the present study provides the first evidence of density-dependent effects on shrimp condition inhabiting a nursery habitat. Both shrimp species exhibited a negative relationship between condition and shrimp density. However, this pattern differed depending on the proximity to the tidal inlet, suggesting that shrimp populations inhabiting the nearby seagrass bed are exposed to density-dependent effects on condition; whereas, such effects were not detected in the distant seagrass bed. Shrimp density within the distant seagrass bed was probably below carrying capacity, which is suggested by the better shrimp condition observed in that area of the lagoon. Intra and interspecific competition for food items is surmised to occur, predominantly within seagrass beds near the tidal inlet. However, this hypothesis needs to be tested in future studies. Abstract Wave energy gradients between and along the margins of inlet channels play an important role in defining the inlet margins’ evolutionary processes, mainly those related to spit erosion or accretion, and inlet migration. The aim of this study is to understand the wave power distribution along the margins of a tidal inlet (Cananéia inlet, São Paulo, Brazil), its variation over time, and the influences of the ebb tidal delta morphology on the incoming waves. To evaluate changes in bathymetry and morphology of submersed features, we apply geoprocessing techniques to analyze nautical charts from the Brazilian Navy from 1939, 1971, 1985 and 2004. The numerical model MIKE21 SW was applied to assess wave propagation and nearshore wave power. Hence, wave energy levels along the inlet margins were assessed in terms of decadal morphological changes. The results indicate a dynamic behavior of the inlet and ebb tidal delta, pointing to the ebb tidal delta as the main transforming agent of the waves that reach the inner portion of the channel. The morphological changes of the ebb tidal delta over the last decades are critical to define the action of waves on the margins of the inlet.

Connectivity provides a framework for analyzing coastal sediment transport pathways, building on conceptual advances in graph theory from other scientific disciplines. Connectivity schematizes sediment pathways as a directed graph (i.e., a set of nodes and links). This study presents a novel application of graph theory and connectivity metrics like modularity and centrality to coastal sediment dynamics, exemplified here using Ameland Inlet in the Netherlands. We divide the study site into geomorphic cells (i.e., nodes) and then quantify sediment transport between these cells (i.e., links) using a numerical model. The system of cells and fluxes between them is then schematized in a network described by an adjacency matrix. Network metrics like link density, asymmetry, and modularity quantify system‐wide connectivity. The degree, strength, and centrality of individual nodes identify key locations and pathways throughout the system. For instance, these metrics indicate that under strictly tidal forcing, sand originating near shore predominantly bypasses Ameland Inlet via the inlet channels, whereas sand on the deeper foreshore mainly bypasses the inlet via the outer delta shoals. Connectivity analysis can also inform practical management decisions about where to place sand nourishments, the fate of nourishment sand, or how to monitor locations vulnerable to perturbations. There are still open challenges associated with quantifying connectivity at varying space and time scales and the development of connectivity metrics specific to coastal systems. Nonetheless, connectivity provides a promising technique for predicting the response of our coasts to climate change and the human adaptations it provokes. These pathways can be challenging to analyze and predict using existing approaches, so we turn to the concept of connectivity. Connectivity represents the pathways that sediment takes as a series of nodes and links, much like in a subway or metro map. This approach is well used in other scientific fields, but in this study we apply these techniques to a new research field: coastal sediment dynamics. To demonstrate the sediment connectivity approach, we use it to map sediment pathways at a coastal site in the Netherlands. The statistics computed using connectivity let us quantify and visualize these sediment pathways, revealing new insights into the coastal system. We can also use this approach to address practical engineering questions, such as where to place sand nourishments for coastal protection. Sediment connectivity thus provides a promising technique for predicting the response of our coasts to climate change and the human adaptations it provokes. To better understand these processes, the development and application of morphodynamic models represents a unique perspective. This paper evaluates the impact of recent developments in the modelling system SCHISM, which include: a WENO method to solve the Exner Equation, a 3D coupling between waves and currents using a vortex force formalism, an adaptive parameterization for the dissipation of short waves by breaking and improved representations for wave-induced sediment transport. In order to evaluate the relevance of these developments, SCHISM is applied to the Maumusson Inlet, a mixed-energy inlet located on the Western Coast of France. Model-data comparison reveals firstly that complex wave-current interactions take place over the inlet ebb-delta, that include partial wave blocking during the ebb. Compared to classical 2DH approaches, our improved modelling system better reproduces the dynamics of adjacent beaches, inlet migration under oblique waves and sediment infilling of the main channel under storm waves. Barrier island response to sea‐level rise depends on their ability to transgress and move sediment onto and behind the barrier, either through flood‐tidal delta deposition or via overwash. Our understanding of these processes over decadal or longer timescales, however, is limited. Here we use a recently developed barrier island model (BRIE) to better understand the interplay between tidal dynamics, overwash fluxes, and sea‐level rise on barrier coasts and barrier island stratigraphy. Model results suggest that in microtidal environments with large alongshore sediment transport fluxes, tidal inlets are ephemeral and migrate rapidly. These conditions lead to effective deposition of flood‐tidal deltas and allow inlets to constitute most of the landward sediment flux. Whether barrier islands can survive sea‐level rise depends on the combined landward sediment flux from overwash and flood‐tidal delta deposition, likely making barrier islands with artificially stabilized inlets (via jetty construction or maintenance dredging) more vulnerable to sea‐level rise. Among the state-of-the-art methods to study coastal processes using numerical modeling, input reduction techniques are advantageous with a significant reduction of required resources, particularly when conducting long-term simulations. This paper evaluates the suitability of these techniques to perform an accelerated morphological simulation, using a Delft3D coupled wave-hydrodynamic-sediment transport model for a small, jettied tidal inlet system (Currumbin Creek, Australia). Three different wave data reduction techniques were applied, namely categorized wave cases (CWC), synthetic wave events (SWE), and seasonally averaged wave events (SAWE). The results were compared with each other and a benchmark study – in particular, the required annual entrance dredging (equivalent to infilling) volume. The CWC, SWE and SAWE methods resulted in about +7%, – 8% and +1% larger infilling volume than the benchmark study, respectively. SAWE was found to be the fastest of all. However, in contrast to the SWE method, no intermediate results would be achieved using the CWC or SAWE methods and only the final pattern of sedimentation or the final volume of channel infilling can correctly be obtained. This article examines the morphological evolution of 27 beaches, including sandy and mixed sandy and rocky beaches, located along a 460 km-long complex shoreline, indented by four incised-valleys. The wave climate, simulated numerically from 1999 to 2017 in front of each beach, allows distinguishing between exposed and sheltered beaches. The morphological changes are quantified at two time scales: the last two centuries, from old maps and aerial photos, and the last two decades, from topographic profiles, aerial photos and satellite images. The first-order parameters explaining most of the spatial variations in the shoreline evolutions are the presence or absence of bedrock outcrops in the foreshore and/or shoreface and the presence or absence of tidal inlets close to the beach. The fastest shoreline changes are observed along exposed sandy beaches close to tidal inlets, whereas moderate to slow evolutions are mainly observed along exposed beaches with rocky foreshore and sheltered beaches. Huge shoreline changes located close to tidal inlets are related to changes in littoral drift orientation and intensity, themselves related to changes in beach orientation. Maximum erosion rates at a decadal time scale are not associated with isolated exceptional storms, but rather with clusters of storms. Beaches evolutions on this indented shoreline are controlled by geological factors (coastal orientation and the basement topography) and display complex patterns that cannot be clearly related to past changes in wave climate and sea level rise, complicating the prediction of their future evolutions. It is well known that estuarine systems are significantly affected by hydrodynamic conditions such as river discharge, storm surges, waves and tidal conditions. In addition to this, human interferences through developmental projects have the capability of disrupting the natural morphological processes occurring at estuaries. In West Africa, the goal to improve standards of living through large-scale dam construction, offshore ports and coastal erosion countermeasures has triggered alarming changes in the morphodynamics of estuarine systems. The estuaries at the Volta River mouth (Ghana) and “Bouche du Roi” inlet (Benin), located along the Bight of Benin coast, West Africa, were selected as two case study sites to examine their long-term morphodynamics and sandspit evolution. In this study, we primarily analyzed estuarine morphology using remotely sensed images acquired from 1984 to 2020. We further estimated the longshore sediment transport for this region using results from the image analysis and the depth of active sediment motion. Our results reveal that the longshore sediment transport rates for this region are in the magnitude of 105–106 m3/year. Comparative analysis with other estuaries and sandy coasts suggests that the longshore sediment transport along this coast has one of the largest rates estimated in the world.

Lagoonal tidal inlets are a typical morphology of the Central Coast of Vietnam. Recently, navigation channels in these inlets have become increasingly threatened by siltation. This study analyses the relations between sediment distribution and transport trends (using the technique of Sediment Trend Analysis-STA®) in the lagoonal system of the De Gi inlet and then proposes appropriate countermeasures against sand deposition in the navigation channel. The STA identified three types of transport trends in the De Gi inlet, namely dynamic equilibrium, net accretion, and net erosion. Processes associated with the tidal prism have resulted in trends of sediment transport and deposition across the flood and ebb tidal shoals, which maintain a present cross-sectional area of about 1000 m2. However, longshore sediment transport from north to south resulting from northeast waves cause additional sand deposition in the channel. In addition, the effects of refraction associated with a nearby headland and jetty also increase sedimentation. These processes provide the main reasons for sediment deposition in the De Gi inlet. Short term and regular dredging helps to maintain the navigation channel. Tidal inlets connect the ocean to inner water bodies and are present worldwide. Shallow inlets display fast morphological changes, due to complex interactions between tides, waves, and shallow depths. Their closure is commonly observed under storm waves, but the underlying processes remain only partly understood. Here, we present new field evidence that infragravity waves contribute to the closure of shallow inlets. The analysis of new field data collected at a shallow inlet under storm waves reveals that infragravity waves up to 0.4 m high can propagate inside the lagoon during flood but are blocked by opposing currents during ebb. At the passage of an infragravity wave crest, currents peak over 2.5 m/s and increase instantaneous sand fluxes by 2 orders of magnitude. Large accumulations of sand at the lagoon entrance damp tidal propagation until full inlet closure. This mechanism provides a new explanation for the closure of shallow inlets observed worldwide. Abstract In this research, a three-dimensional coupled wave-circulation model, including meteorological forcing, freshwater inflow and time varying open boundary conditions, for New River Inlet is validated. A mechanistic approach is taken to investigate how various wave-current interaction mechanisms affect the nearshore circulation, plume expansion and surface wave field in the plume region of a relatively small partially mixed tidal estuarine system. More specifically, focus is comparing four different modeling cases including: (1) a three-dimensional ocean circulation model (no wave effects), (2) a coupled wave-circulation model, (3) a coupled wave and circulation model including vertical mixing enhancement due to wave breaking, and (4) a wave model without surface current effects. Findings reveal forces are applied by incoming waves due to various wave-current interaction mechanisms. Wave momentum released by incoming waves pushes the outgoing freshwater ebb plume back to the shoreline and prevents the plume from expanding freely towards the open ocean. Findings also reveals that releasing wave-dissipated energy in the expanding plume region enhances vertical mixing, mixes down freshwater, and therefore thickens the plume. This study focused on the morphologic changes in an ebb-tidal delta of Imagire-guchi inlet, Japan, at several temporal scales and the characteristics. The bathymetric information of the inlet was collected from multiple small fishing vessels. The position and depth of the vessel during operation were acquired with a GNSS antenna and fish finder, respectively, and these spatial data were logged with timestamps. The inlet bathymetry was consequently prepared to evaluate changes in the inlet morphology and delta-front volume. An assessment of the bathymetry monitoring data from 2008 to 2016 showed several reversals of the trends and various rates of accretion or erosion in the terminal lobe. The rate of the terminal progradation ranged from 7 to 30 m/y, and the rate of retrogradation ranged from 3 to 100 m/y over the eight years. The trend of progradation reversed in correspondence to three characteristic typhoons. The morphologic impact appeared in the terminal lobe and topset bed. The inlet channel also responded to typhoons with an expansion of shallows. The volume of delta-front sediment was annually evaluated, and the annual changes were compared with the equilibrium. This paper presents the result of a multiyear study consisting of field measurements and numerical modeling of a highly dynamic tidal inlet located on the west side of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence near Le Goulet, New Brunswick, Canada. Due to a lack of human intervention in the past few decades, natural processes have taken hold of this tidal inlet and large volumes of sediment have been deposited within the inlet. The Shippagan Gully inlet transects the Acadian Peninsula and is therefore subject to tidal forcing from both ends. An appreciable phase lag present in the two open ocean boundaries results in ebb flows through Shippagan Gully, which regularly exceed 2 m/s, to be twice as strong as the flood flows. This flow imbalance along with a long history of human intervention has created a complex and highly dynamic tidal inlet. The purpose of the study was to develop a numerical model of the hydrodynamic and morphological processes that occur at Shippagan Gully and to use the model to assess alternative engineering measures that could be implemented to promote a safe and navigable channel through the inlet. As special and important landscape bodies, tidal inlets possess many coastal resources. Consideration of the maintenance and protection of coastline resources and the environment is a challenging research topic, i.e. how to reasonably and scientifically exploit and use coastal resources. In this study, multitemporal Landsat images were used to explore and quantify relationships between the intensity of human activities and coastline changes. Specifically, (1) the spatial location, length, and tortuosity of coastlines in Xiangshan Harbor (XH; Zhejiang Province, China) tidal inlets, from 1974 to 2014, were extracted from satellite images; (2) the coastline change indices and the intensity of human activities in the tidal inlet areas of XH were calculated and assessed; and (3) the relationships between coastline change characteristics and human activities during the past 40 years were explored and analyzed. The results demonstrated that, during the past four decades, as human activities have intensified, the natural coastlines in XH continuously shrank, whereas artificial coastlines increased and then gradually became stable. Various human activities have changed the morphology of local coastlines in XH, and the overall coastline tortuosity has been continuously reduced. The intensity of human activities increased from 1974 to 1998, and the intensity slowed after 1998. However, the impacts of human activities are extensive and almost cover the entire coastlines of the harbor. The correlations between the intensity of human activities and the overall length and tortuosity of the coastlines were significantly negative, which means that, as human activities intensified, the length and tortuosity of the coastlines decreased. The growing interest in monitoring the marine environment has strongly encouraged governmental agencies and research institutes to undertake seabed mapping programs and stimulated scientific interest in innovative mapping methods and tools. In this study, object-based image analysis was used to map a very shallow tidal inlet, characterized by high sediment variability and intense morphodynamic processes. The aim was to test the feasibility of reproducible mapping approaches within extended mapping programs of complex coastal areas. The study is based on full-coverage, high-resolution bathymetry and reflectivity, calibrated by means of sediment samples. Seafloor segmentation and classification were based on a cluster analysis performed on reflectivity, slope, and ruggedness. Statistics of clusters were extracted and analysed to identify the optimal number of clusters and evaluate the suitability of the clustering process to differentiate different seabed types. Clusters and samples data were joined to create a training and validation dataset for characterizing the seabed and carrying out an accuracy assessment. Misclassifications were explored and referred to three main reasons: (i) The not-perfect correspondence between sediment boundaries of classification systems and boundaries derived from the clustering process; (ii) the geomorphological features of the seabed; and (iii) the position accuracy of samples. The study contributes to testing of the feasibility of objective methods and highlights the importance of joining acoustic, lithological, and geomorphological analysis. It highlights issues and the need to critically analyse the mapping results and improve the accuracy of collected data.

The prism of the Lignano tidal inlet was approximately constant over the last forty years, although the section width has halved. This has led to questions concerning the factors that most influence the tidal prism, and on the applicability of the well-known A–P relationship. A conceptual scheme of the sea–channel–lagoon system has been used to perform a sensitivity analysis of different parameters that characterize both the basin and the inlet cross-section. A 2D hydrodynamic model has been applied to evaluate the prism and compare it to the one derived by a static method, which is the basis of the analytical derivation of the A–P linkage. Three regimes have been found in the prism variability as a function of the basin extension: a linear static regime between prism and basin area; an asymptotic regime in which the prism depends only on the basin bottom friction; and an intermediate one. In addition, the roles of the inlet and channel sizes on the prism value have been investigated. The results, compared to the empirical relationships between the prism and the inlet cross-section, show that a variation in the cross-sectional area does not always corresponds to a change in tidal prism.

Tidal inlets along the central coast of Vietnam are located in a microtidal, wave-dominated coastal environment. In addition, the Vietnam coast is highly influenced by the seasonal monsoon regime, which is characterized by large northeast waves from October to March and calm southeast waves from April to September every year. Consequently, the tidal inlet entrance morphologies often suffer from a dynamic seasonal evolution due to distinct differences in the direction of wave-induced longshore sediment transport (LST) between the two monsoon seasons. The migration or closure of tidal inlets causes a lot of problems for socio-economic development in the region since these are the main reasons leading to an increase in the risk of coastal flooding and the obstruction of navigation. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the morphological evolutions of natural tidal inlets on the central coast of Vietnam using long-term remote sensing data sets and by the Delft3D numerical model. Surprisingly, the estimated LST rates from the former method are in an order of magnitude agreement with the results from the latter one for all of the areas in this study. Based on the conservation equation for sand and comprehensive data collection, a new simple empirical formula for predicting the sand spit elongation rate as a function of the sand spit width is developed. Although the breaching of sand spit might happen during an extreme flood event at some tidal inlets, the growth rate of the spit before and after the breaching is almost unchanged. These findings are very useful information for supporting the local coastal authorities to find better management solutions in terms of sustainable development.

The morphological evolution of a tidal inlet is the combined result of tides and wind waves, which interact in a non-linear manner and over very different time-scales. Likewise, the presence of maritime structures built in the vicinity of the tidal inlet, for coastal or port defense or to stabilize the inlet itself, can greatly affect this dynamic equilibrium, changing erosional and depositional patterns of the adjacent shoreline. In this study, the narrowing phenomenon of the Lignano tidal inlet subsequent to the construction of the related port, is examined through an integrated approach in order to propose and verify a possible form of evolution. This approach is the result of the combination of three methods: the historical reconstruction of the shifting of the coastline, an empirical scheme which describes the qualitative morphology of a mixed-energy tidal inlet, and a process-based morphodynamic modeling, which adopts a bi-dimensional depth averaged (2DH) approach. The application of numerical modeling has required the definition of a reduced input set of data representing an average year, in particular for wind and tidal conditions, including the meteorological component. The magnitude and the directions of the simulated dominant sediment transport are coherent with real processes both from a qualitative and a quantitative point of view.
