A new renewable energy-driven advanced plant is designed and developed to produce multiple useful outputs, namely electricity, heat, cooling, hydrogen, and monomethylhydrazine (as space shuttle fuel) using solar and wind energies locally available. A specific location needed for this kind of unique work is identified as the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), which is known as located on Merritt Island, in the state of Florida (USA). It is also one of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) ten field centers. Since December 1968, KSC has been NASA's primary launch center of American spaceflight, research, and technology. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the subsystems that constitute the newly proposed system potentially for KSC and highlights their complex relationships and synergies. Leveraging renewable energy sources, such as concentrated solar power (CSP) and wind energy, coupled with the subsystem uniquely, such as the regenerative Rankine cycle, multi-stage flash (MSF) desalination unit, hydrogen production process, and Li–Br absorption chiller, the KSC's system maximizes energy conversion efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. Noteworthy outcomes include daily water production of 177.63 kg/s and hydrogen production of 169.61 kg/day, alongside annual energy contributions of 212,692,688 kWh for CSP and 66,158,552 kWh for wind turbines. More than that, it produces 23.04 kg/s MMH as fuel. Additionally, the overall energy and exergy efficiencies of the system are 30.6% and 33% respectively. Despite challenges, such as low efficiencies in certain subsystems, like mono methyl hydrazine (MMH) production, ongoing research and development efforts aim to optimize processes and enhance sustainability. A computational investigation of a Mach 6.9 turbulent flow near the juncture (cove) of a wing's trailing-edge and elevon was carried out. Turbulence was modeled using improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES). The computational data were compared to the results of an experimental study, conducted by Deveikis and Bartlett, which simulated the flow over the windward surface of the NASA space shuttle. Flow visualization, surface variable comparison with experiment, and analysis of unsteady flow statistics were carried out. Reasonable agreement between prediction and measurement was obtained for time-averaged surface pressure and heat flux. Unsteady analysis of these quantities revealed spectra dominated by low-frequency energy content throughout the interaction region. A correlation analysis indicated coupling of the unsteady motions of the shear layer, shock wave, separation vortex, and flow reattachment. The results of the present study suggest that IDDES can be a valuable tool for the analysis of heating and unsteadiness in hypersonic gap flows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Porous adsorbent material is promising to be used to regeneratively remove CO2 from space shuttles. In this work, the amount and isosteric heat of CO2 adsorption in solid amine are experimentally studied at pressures ranging from 0 to 6 bar and temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 60 °C. The amount and isosteric heat of water adsorption in the solid amine is tested at different humidities (relative humidity 30–80%). The effective thermal conductivity of the solid amine at different atmospheres (air, N2, CO2 and water), pressures and temperatures is also investigated. The results show that the best temperature for CO2 adsorption in the solid amine is 45 °C under dry conditions. The amount of water adsorption increases with enhanced humidity, while the isosteric heat of water adsorption remains a constant value. The effective thermal conductivity of the solid amine increases with an increase in pressure. The adsorbed phase (CO2 and water) in the solid amine makes a contribution to improving the effective thermal conductivity of solid amine particles. At a meeting in Moscow on January 18–21, 1971, delegations from the Soviet Academy of Sciences and the United States' NASA agreed upon the main directions of cooperation in space and a procedure for exchanging the findings of space research. The final document of the meeting was taken as a basis for the preparation of the international Agreement between the Soviet Union and the United States "On Cooperation in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes" (Moscow, May 24, 1972). This Agreement allowed scientists and specialists of the Soviet Union and the United States to successfully carry out joint research for many years in the fields of space meteorology; the study of the natural environment; exploration of the near-Earth space, the Moon, and planets; and space biology and medicine, as well as to implement a joint manned experimental flight—the "Apollo–Soyuz Test Project" (ASTP)—for development of space-rescue methods.
