Stereoscopic imaging has had a rich history in photographic, televisual, cinematic, theme-park and gaming form since its emergence in the nineteenth century. Nonetheless, 3D media's many booms and busts have led it to be treated as a cyclical 'fad'. Its peak moments suggest a trend of death and rebirth, and stereoscopy has come to be characterized, more than any other media form, by its continual passing. But while scepticism towards this form has become a standard popular and scholarly refrain, less acknowledged is the way in which 3D imaging has remained in public consciousness and at the peripheries of popular visual culture throughout its lengthy history. This article explores the interstitial moments of stereoscopic media's history and takes account of the determinants that have allowed it to thrive and wane while foregrounding the role that popular imagination has played in allowing it to persist. Media entertainment is situated predominately on large screens, with content that is designed to take advantage of the large screen platform. While developments in media technology are generating progressively smaller, more personalised distribution platforms, onto which the transfer of large screen content is currently performed. Mobile gaming, mobile film, and mobile television content viewing are increasingly marketed as extensions to traditional distribution means. Given the drastically different viewing and distribution mediums of the large and small screens, it is useful to investigate the effectiveness of this practice on the reception of content and audience viewing experience. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to survey current practices for portable media (CDs and DVDs) use for medical imaging in both academic and nonacademic radiology departments in the United States. Methods: This survey was a stratified, nonrandom sample, 22-question electronic survey, using SurveyMonkey, of members of the Association of Administrators in Academic Radiology, the Association for Medical Imaging Management, and the University HealthSystem Consortium, conducted in November 2009. Questions were grouped by media production and media viewing practices. Results: One hundred and two individual responses to the survey were received. Ninety-eight percent of respondents said that their institutions produced Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM)-compliant media, with only 2.0% uncertain. Only 22.2% of respondents claimed that their institutions produced Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Portable Data for Imaging (PDI)-compliant media, while 71.6% were uncertain. Rates of DICOM and IHE PDI compliance did not differ between academic and nonacademic centers. As for testing digital media produced at the institutions for DICOM and IHE PDI compliance, only 16.0% of respondents'' institutions routinely did so. Conclusions: Three main problem areas regarding portable media became evident from this study: (1) access, (2) importability, and (3) viewing issues, and problems with any of the 3 can delay patient care. Noncompliance and a lack of knowledge about compliance were found to be major issues in the present study, more so for IHE PDI than for DICOM, and there is much room for improvement. Recommendations include that radiology practices should routinely generate only media compliant with DICOM and IHE PDI and should test for compliance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Nowadays many systems need a portable media to store some sensible data, such as smart cards. The information can be protected by the user with his Personal Identification Number (PIN), or through biometrics. Unfortunately, there is not a smart card today that can verify the biometric template inside it, performing this task in the terminal. The author has developed the algorithms and data structures needed to solve this problem. Therefore, he has created a smart card with user biometric authentication, based on an Open Platform smart card (in this case, a JavaCard). To achieve these results, different biometric techniques have been studied: speaker verification, hand geometry and iris recognition.
