Adaptive introgression plays a vital role in allowing recipient species to adapt and colonize new environments. However, our understanding of such environment-dependent introgressions is primarily limited to specific plant taxa in particular settings. In Japan, two related orchid species, the autonomously self-pollinating Pogonia minor and the outcrossing Pogonia japonica , typically inhabit dry grasslands and wetlands, respectively. Intriguingly, an island ecotype of P. japonica exists in arid, wind-swept, open sites on volcanic mountain slopes on Kozu Island, in the oceanic Izu Islands. To investigate potential introgression and its implications between P. japonica and P. minor on Kozu Island, we applied a comprehensive approach that included examining morphological traits, genome-wide SNP data, and plastid DNA sequences. We also examined the breeding systems of these species on Kozu Island through artificial pollination experiments to determine if introgression from P. minor has endowed the P. japonica ecotype with selfing capabilities. Extensive sampling on Kozu Island revealed that all P. japonica specimens exhibit signs of introgression from P. minor , suggesting the absence of pure P. japonica populations on the island. Furthermore, the chloroplast haplotypes of the insular P. japonica ecotype consistently match those of P. minor , indicating a predominantly asymmetrical initial hybridization with P. minor acting mainly as the maternal parent in the formation of F1 hybrids. Despite the advantages of self-fertilization in isolated environments, the insular P. japonica does not exhibit autogamy. Consequently, the scarcity of moist habitats, rather than selection pressure for selfing, likely contributes to the observed widespread introgression. Our study strongly suggests that the arid-environment-adapted P. minor has introgressed into the insular ecotype of P. japonica , enabling its successful colonization of arid volcanic mountain slopes of the oceanic island. The approximately 320 atolls of the world, scattered across the tropical oceanic basins, constitute a unique type of ecosystem in that they are each an integrated unit consisting of island, coral reef, and lagoon components. Atolls have a complex geology, ecology, and biogeography, which can be fully appreciated only by transcending the classic boundary thinking of marine and terrestrial realms. The atolls we observe today were shaped by Quaternary sea-level fluctuations, which imposed strong environmental filters on their communities. As entirely biogenic, reef-borne structures, the islands of atolls depend upon marine productivity, which catalyzes island community assembly. Island species communities exist in complex dynamic equilibria with the surrounding oceanographic conditions. Energy fluxes and element cycles of the atoll system readily cross habitat boundaries and create a productive, diverse, and biomass-rich ecosystem on land and underwater. Aim: Atolls are a widely distributed, common type of tropical ecosystem, each consisting of an annular coral reef and up to several hundred individual islets sitting on the reef platform. The small land areas and low elevation render the terrestrial communities susceptible to local extinctions from overwash and inundation due to tropical cyclones. Such recurring catastrophic disturbances should be expected to drive strong priority effects and historical contingency in species assembly, thus also promoting species turnover within atolls. This stands contradictory to the received wisdom of atolls consisting of numerous uniform, replicated island systems. We tested the hypothesis that the individual islets within an atoll exhibit compositional turnover and that this species turnover within atolls is related to cyclone frequency. Location: Atolls worldwide. Time Period: Present. Taxa Studied: Vascular plants, reptiles, birds. Methods: We compiled a global dataset at the level of islets for species presence/absence within atolls. We obtained long‐term (80 year) tropical cyclone frequency data for each atoll from the NOAA hurricane database and used Bayesian regression to estimate the effects of tropical cyclone frequency on species turnover within atolls. Results: We consistently measured high within‐atoll species turnover (i.e., between the individual islets within an atoll) on atolls worldwide. The degree of within‐atoll species turnover increases with increasing tropical cyclone frequency. Atolls that are more frequently hit by tropical cyclones show higher species turnover between their islets than those that occur outside the tropical cyclone belt. Main Conclusions: Tropical cyclones are a significant driver of the community assemblages on atolls. These catastrophic disturbances promote a heterogenous atoll landscape, which challenges perceptions that the islets within an atoll are identical replicates of the entire atoll terrestrial community. Biodiversity surveys undertaken at the islet‐level (alpha‐diversity) might therefore not be representative of the entire atoll metacommunity (gamma) diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Oceanic islands offer valuable natural laboratories for studying evolution. The Izu Islands, with their recent geological origin, provide an exceptional opportunity to explore the initial evolution on oceanic islands. Another noteworthy aspect is the absence of bumblebee species on most Izu Islands.We used ecological, morphological, and molecular data to investigate the impact of bumblebee absence on the evolution of two closely related orchid species, Goodyera henryi and Goodyera similis, focusing on Kozu Island, the Izu Islands.Our investigation revealed that while G. henryi exclusively relies on a bumblebee species for pollination on the mainland, G. similis is pollinated by scoliid wasps on both the mainland and the island. Intriguingly, all specimens initially categorized as G. henryi on Kozu Island are hybrids of G. henryi and G. similis, leading to the absence of pure G. henryi distribution on the island. These hybrids are pollinated by the scoliid wasp species that also pollinates G. similis on the island.The absence of bumblebees might result in sporadic and inefficient pollination of G. henryi by scoliid wasps, consequently promoting hybrid proliferation on the island. Most tropical forests are now severely degraded and their ability to recover is highly dependent on frugivores which ensure seed dispersal for most woody plants. The global collapse of large vertebrates therefore raises major concerns about tropical forest succession, but few field studies have been conducted to disentangle recruitment limitations during disrupted succession.This study took place on Réunion (Mascarenes) where all large native frugivores have been extinct since human colonisation in 1665 and where multiple invasions threaten native ecosystems. We set up 20 experimental blocks on a lava flow dated back to 1800, in plant‐impoverished post‐defaunation vegetation bordered by old‐growth forests. We assessed fecundity, seed dispersal and seedling recruitment of the complete fleshy‐fruited plant community and used Bayesian analyses to disentangle the impact of multiple factors on these key processes. In the same blocks, we sowed four native trees assumed to be disperserless to test their capacity to establish, controlling for two additional post‐dispersal limitations (seed predation and competition with invasive plants).On the flow, small‐seeded native plants were fairly dispersed but did not recruit, probably due to strong competition with invasive plants; the few native species that recruited somehow were mostly medium‐seeded plants that were still dispersed; large‐seeded plants were absent from seed rain (which shows that invasive frugivores did not replace extinct ones) and subsequently from spontaneous recruitment. Instead, some alien plants, notably the tiny‐seeded highly dispersed Clidemia hirta and the medium‐seeded Psidium cattleianum largely dominated seedling recruitment. Native plants recruited better at the forest margin, including some large‐seeded species nearby mother trees.Sown large‐seeded species were able to emerge and survive in all plots whatever the treatment, which demonstrates that dispersal loss was the primary cause of regeneration failure on the flow.Synthesis. The strong modulation of the establishment capacity of native plants by seed mass shows that invasive plants win by forfeit of large‐seeded plants after native frugivores loss. Our study emphasises the fundamental role of dispersal loss and competition with invasive plants in the disruption of ecological succession, as well as the urgency of restoring seed dispersal and strengthening biosecurity regulations. The globally threatened European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is the only freshwater fish native to Macaronesia. Despite being a keystone species to freshwater habitats, little is known about its population, environmental associations and conservation requirements in oceanic islands.The density and geographical‐related factors influencing the distribution of A. anguilla in the subtropical Archipelago of Madeira (Portugal) were examined. Data on the species occurrence was initially collected using an online survey addressed to citizens. Eels were then sampled through electrofishing in 31 sampling sites along 11 streams on Madeira Island, and eel‐habitat associations were investigated using LMMs and GLMMs. One stream was also sampled in Porto Santo Island.The presence of A. anguilla was confirmed in the two islands of the archipelago with streams (Madeira and Porto Santo). Eels are distributed throughout Madeira Island, being more abundant – particularly small size individual– at lower altitudes (mostly below 150 m). The number of weirs was an important predictor of eel density, suggesting that these flood‐control structures limit their upstream migration.This study represents a pioneer sampling effort of the European eel in Madeira and results provide much‐needed baseline information on the species distribution and related environmental factors in oceanic islands. While most eel research has historically focused on mainland habitats where dams pose a significant threat to eel habitats, our study underscores the critical importance of addressing smaller, often overlooked barriers that may also cause habitat fragmentation.The European eel is a panmictic species, thus, the conservation of the Macaronesian subpopulations can have substantial benefits for its global recovery. A comprehensive investigation of the impact of man‐made obstacles on eel habitat is still needed. Premise of research. Genome size has cascading effects at nuclear, cell, and whole-organism levels, with consequences in the biology of the species. Large genomes impose higher metabolic and energetic costs, which might be exceedingly limiting for species to thrive under stressing environments, such as island archipelagos. Methodology. We mined online databases to collate available data on chromosome numbers and genome sizes in the genus Artemisia , which colonized Macaronesia and Hawaii archipelagos. We applied phylogenetic-based modeling approaches to reconstruct the evolution of these two traits to estimate ancestral states as well as the main mechanisms of change. Pivotal results. On the basis of extant chromosome data, our analyses discard polyploidy as a likely mechanism for speciation in Macaronesia or Hawaii. However, contrasting genome size patterns are found. Hawaiian endemics account for the smallest genomes in Artemisia , while those of Macaronesian endemics fall well above the average size in the genus. Conclusions. The evidence gathered in Artemisia indicates that, rather than genome downsizing, the presence of small genomes most likely predated colonization of Hawaii, which could have been key for a long dispersal from an Asian ancestor. Such a pattern does not hold in Macaronesia, which is relatively closer to mainland compared with Hawaii, hence suggesting that geographical isolation might reduce the likelihood of a large-genomed taxon to successfully colonize remote island archipelagos. The human transport and subsequent naturalization of species outside their natural ranges has led to novel interactions between introduced and native species throughout the world. Understanding how introduced species impact pollination networks is useful for both invasive species management and native species conservation and restoration. Banana poka (Passiflora tarminiana), a hummingbird pollinated liana native to South America, has naturalized in higher elevation forests on the islands of Kauaʻi, Maui and Hawaiʻi in the Hawaiian archipelago, habitats in which endemic honeycreepers still occur. To develop an understanding of the interaction between banana poka and honeycreepers, we undertook a floral visitation study at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the island of Hawaiʻi where three nectivorous honeycreepers and banana poka co-occur. Two honeycreeper species, ʻiʻiwi (Drepanis coccinea) and Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi (Chlorodrepanis virens), nectar robbed all of the banana poka flowers that they visited, ostensibly due to the length of the corolla tubes (60–90 mm long) which physically inhibits both honeycreeper species from accessing nectar via the mouth of the corolla. In addition, the standing crop and sugar composition of banana poka floral nectar were assessed. Flowers produced large standing crops (375 ± 132 μL) of nectar containing 29.1 ± 1% (w/v) of sugar that was sucrose-dominant (mean: 95.6 ± 0.5% sucrose in each sample). Our observations suggest that the floral nectar of banana poka may form a substantial component of the diet of both honeycreeper species at the study site. Further research is needed to understand how infestations of banana poka affect bird pollination networks at this and other sites in Hawaiʻi.

Species traits are thought to predict feeding specialization and the vulnerability of a species to extinctions of interaction partners, but the context in which a species evolved and currently inhabits may also matter. Notably, the predictive power of traits may require that traits evolved to fit interaction partners. Furthermore, local abiotic and biotic conditions may be important. On islands, for instance, specialized and vulnerable species are predicted to be found mainly in mountains, whereas species in lowlands should be generalized and less vulnerable. We evaluated these predictions for hummingbirds and their nectar-food plants on Antillean islands. Our results suggest that the rates of hummingbird trait divergence were higher among ancestral mainland forms before the colonization of the Antilles. In correspondence with the limited trait evolution that occurred within the Antilles, local abiotic and biotic conditions-not species traits-correlate with hummingbird resource specialization and the vulnerability of hummingbirds to extinctions of their floral resources. Specifically, hummingbirds were more specialized and vulnerable in conditions with high topographical complexity, high rainfall, low temperatures and high floral resource richness, which characterize the Antillean Mountains. These findings show that resource specialization and species vulnerability to extinctions of interaction partners are highly context-dependent.

Abstract The Japanese greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus nippon) is distributed widely in East Asia. Within the species, R. nippon in Northeast Asia is regarded as the lineage that diverged most recently. However, the monophyly of the Japanese populations is unclear due to insufficient data about phylogenetic relationship of the western Japanese populations. To test the monophyly of the Japanese populations of R. nippon, we sampled R. nippon from western Japan and performed a phylogeographic analysis based on mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b and the D‐loop. The Northeast Asian lineage consisted of three main clades in eastern Japan (clade I), western Japan (clade II), and the continent as well as the Kumamoto population in westernmost Japan (clade III). The results of this study do not support the monophyly of the Japanese population. The findings suggest the “reverse colonization” of R. nippon from the Japanese Archipelago to the Eurasian continent, and provide important insight into the role of the island system in creation and supply of diversity to the continent.

The loss of large frugivores leads to seed dispersal loss and regeneration failure of numerous large-seeded trees near mother trees. Although Janzen–Connell effects are considered as the primary underlying cause, other factors remain understudied. Here, we used a field experiment to test the impact of flesh persistence on the recruitment of two large-seeded Sapotaceae species that lost their dispersers. In the rainforest of Mare Longue (Réunion), we sowed 3840 seeds in a four-factor design: seed treatment (seed cleaning; flesh persistence), canopy closure (understory; gap), year of sowing (01/2018; 11/2019) and species (Labourdonnaisia calophylloides , Mimusops balata). We also used camera traps to evaluate the impact of extant vertebrates. Seed treatment was by far the most influential factor: flesh persistence led to seedling recruitment divided by 3,2 on average, mainly due to failure of germination or seedling emergence. There were also significant variations in recruitment between species, years and canopy closure levels, notably due to the behaviour of the invasive fauna, especially giant snails that could unexpectedly restore recruitment by feeding on fruit flesh. Together, our results demonstrate strongly depleted recruitment due to flesh persistence and the importance of field experiments to understand the processes at work in complex ecosystems with novel plant–animal interactions. The new species Ikaeria serusiauxii ( Teloschistaceae , lichenized Ascomycetes ) is described from the Madeira Archipelago, Canary Islands and continental Portugal. It is a crustose lichen on twigs and branches of trees and shrubs in xerophytic maritime vegetation. Superficially it is similar to Caloplaca cerina and C. haematites , from which it differs by the often black apothecium margin, very thick spore septa, black pycnidium ostioles, and the presence of the pigment Cinereorufa -green instead of Sedifolia -grey. ITS sequences suggest Ikaeria aurantiellina (syn. Caloplaca aegatica ) as the closest relative. Added is a preliminary lichen checklist for Porto Santo (Madeira Archipelago, Macaronesia).

The island of Newfoundland has no native amphibian taxa, although six species of Anura (i.e., frogs and toads) have been introduced since European colonisation, four of which have established self-sustaining populations. Here, we document Eastern Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) on Newfoundland for the first time, in what appears to be a self-sustaining population near Conception Bay South. This is the first species of Caudata (i.e., newts and salamanders) to have been introduced to the island, as well as the first occurrence of Eastern Red-backed Salamander establishing a population outside its native range. The impact that this non-native species might have on forest ecosystems on Newfoundland is unclear and further study is required to determine whether eradication of the species from Newfoundland is necessary or feasible. Background The gut microbiome of animals is an important component that has strong influence on the health, fitness, and behavior of its host. Most research in the microbiome field has focused on human populations and commercially important species. However, researchers are now considering the link between endangered species conservation and the microbiome. In Hawaiʻi, several threats (e.g., avian malaria and habitat loss) have caused widespread population declines of Hawaiian honeycreepers (subfamily: Carduelinae). These threats can have a significant effect on the avian gut microbiome and may even lead to disruption of microbial function. However, the gut microbiome of honeycreeper in the wild has yet to be explored. Methods We collected 13 and 42 fecal samples, respectively, from two critically endangered honeycreeper species, the ʻakikiki (Oreomystis bairdi) and the ʻakekeʻe (Loxops caeruleirostris). The 16S rRNA gene was sequenced and processed though a MOTHUR-based bioinformatics pipeline. Bacterial ASVs were identified using the DADA2 program and bacterial community analyses, including alpha and beta diversity measures, were conducted using R packages Phyloseq and vegan. Results A total of 8,958 bacterial ASVs were identified from the fecal samples. Intraspecific differences in the gut microbiome among individual birds explained most of the variation present in the dataset, however differences between species did exist. Both species had distinct microbiomes with minimal overlap in beta diversity. ‘Akikiki had a more diverse microbiome compared to ‘akekeʻe. Additionally, small but stastically significant differences in beta diversity also exist between sampling location and sexes in ʻakikiki. Conclusion ʻAkikiki and ʻakekeʻe are currently the focus of captive breeding efforts and plans to translocate the two species to other islands are underway. This baseline knowledge will help inform management decisions for these honeycreeper species in their native habitats, on other islands, and in captivity.

The origin and establishment of gender dimorphism has been postulated as a key element in the evolution of insular floras but has generally not been studied in an explicit phylogenetic framework. We tested the prior conclusion that the origin of gender dimorphism in the New Zealand species of Gaultheria Kalm ex L. is allochthonous by newly tracing the evolution of gender dimorphism on a phylogenetic tree of the Wintergreen Clade. We scored species for male sterility and breeding system type (cosexual, gynodioecious, or dioecious) based on the literature, and observations from the field and herbarium specimens. We traced the evolution of gender dimorphism, fruit evolution, and ancestral areas on the tree with parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian methods. Our analyses revealed that male sterility in New Zealand most likely emanated from a male-sterile fleshy red-fruited South American lineage, with reversals to cosexuality in two or three Australian lineages of the more inclusive Australasian Clade. The results support an allochthonous origin of gynodioecy in New Zealand Gaultheria and corroborate arrival of the ancestral ancestor through over-water dispersal, likely by birds. Although gender dimorphism could have arrived to New Zealand as a preadaptation to avoid inbreeding depression in an island setting, its correlation with fleshy fruit, unspecialised flowers, and woody habit across the genus suggests that factors other than the island setting per se are responsible for its maintenance in New Zealand. Although gender dimorphism in New Zealand has usually arisen autochthonously in dry-fruited genera, in Gaultheria the presence of gynodioecy in several dry-fruited species is best explained by its retention from fleshy-fruited ancestors. Three rat species, the Norway rat, black rat or ship rat, Pacific or Polynesian rat, and the house mouse are among the most widespread and destructive invasive mammals affecting islands. Through mostly unintentional introductions by humans, these rodents occupy >80% of the major islands worldwide. As a consequence of their omnivorous diet and large incisor teeth, introduced rats are probably the invasive animals responsible for the greatest number of plant and animal extinctions on islands. The effects of house mice on island ecosystems are less well known when compared with rats. We have reviewed past diet studies of these 4 omnivorous rodent species. Our review suggests that due to the high variability in diet, as well as direct and indirect effects of predation, all 4 species pose potential threats to many plants and animals on Pacific islands. Although rodent diets greatly differ among sites, diets appear to roughly follow this pattern: Norway rats and house mice generally consume proportionally more animal than plant (Norway rats consume many vertebrates and house mice mostly consumes arthropods), whereas black and Pacific rats generally consume proportionally more plant than animal. Studies specifically linking rodent diets with the population status of surrounding biota are needed in order to clarify the effective impacts of these rodent species. Much could be learned from rodent removal experiments, which could further expand our knowledge of invasive rodent species effects, and native species conservation, on islands.

Redonda is a small volcanic Caribbean island that is home to at least 4 endemic lizard species, including the Critically Endangered ground lizard (Pholidoscelis atratus). Black rats (Rattus rattus) and domestic goats (Capra hircus) were introduced to the island at some time after its discovery by Europeans in the late 1500s. They had a devastating effect on the island, resulting in the loss of nearly all trees and most of the ground vegetation. Point count surveys of P. atratus in 2012 indicated low densities, and the invasive rats were observed hunting and preying on the lizards. Both populations of rats and goats were successfully removed in 2017 as part of an ecological restoration program, and native vegetation and invertebrate populations have increased rapidly since. Population surveys in 2017, 2018, and 2019 show the lizard population has increased by more than sixfold. In 2017, as rats and goats were being removed, we evaluated the morphology and escape behavior of this species and repeated these measurements 1 year later. We observed that P. atratus had become bolder, with a reduced flight distance. We also detected changes in limb morphology related to locomotion and suggest possible explanations that will need to be further investigated in the future. These results show how the removal of invasive species can rapidly affect lizard population recovery and behavior, potentially restoring island ecosystems to their pre‐human interference dynamics. Apis species are a major component of pollinator faunas in their native and introduced habitats. A widespread concern is that non-native Apis mellifera may have negative effects on native pollinators and on plant reproduction. This is based on the assumptions that natural communities are at capacity, resource competition structures communities, native pollinators are more effective pollinators of native species, yet A. mellifera are superior competitors. The latter two assumptions are often true, but evidence from the Neotropics indicates that tropical communities are not tightly structured, and the foraging flexibilities of native bees maintain their populations. However, the less diverse and disharmonic biotas of islands may limit the buffering capacity of flexible behaviors. While few studies address these assumptions or the ecological and evolutionary consequences of A. mellifera to the flora and fauna of tropical islands, an accumulation of taxon-specific studies are suggesting that such effects run the spectrum from subtle and indirect to obvious and direct. A concerted research effort is needed to address the multitude of issues to develop strategies to ameliorate or enhance honey bee effects, or just let nature take its course.

Understanding how seed dispersal disruption may alter plant community diversity and dynamics over a large temporal scale remains a challenge. Here, we use a long‐term chronosequence to compare changes in the richness and composition of different dispersal trait assemblages in communities established before and after human colonization in the Mascarene archipelago.Our study was located on Réunion on the slopes of the Piton de la Fournaise which is one of the most active volcanoes worldwide. We analysed 151 vegetation surveys on lava flows dated between 1401 AD and 1956 AD and in tropical rainforests established on older substrata. We defined five classes of substratum age, according to the well‐known chronology of native frugivore defaunation: 'old substrata' and [1401, 1665[ when frugivores were abundant and diverse before permanent human settlement; [1665, 1800[ when large‐bodied frugivore populations were strongly reduced; [1800, 1900[ when large‐bodied frugivores went extinct and small‐bodied frugivores were still abundant; [1900, 1956] decline in the populations of small‐bodied frugivores. Based on dispersal traits, we categorized 146 native woody species as anemochorous, small fleshy‐fruited or large fleshy‐fruited, i.e. plant of which fruit could not theoretically be dispersed by extant frugivores.Changes in dispersal trait diversity strongly correlated with the chronology of defaunation. Species‐rich communities settled before human colonization was strongly dominated by fleshy‐fruited species. Large fleshy‐fruited plants in the oldest communities settled after human colonization declined markedly and almost disappeared after 1800. The richness of small fleshy‐fruited plants decreased less rapidly across the chronosequence, with medium levels on [1665, 1800[ and [1800, 1900[ lava flows and low levels on [1900, 1956] lava flows. Conversely, the richness of anemochorous plants remained unchanged. Communities settled before human colonization had a similar composition. Fleshy‐fruited assemblages showed strong species loss across the chronosequence, while anemochorous assemblages showed strong species turnover, which was probably due to lower dispersal limitation.Synthesis. Our results provide the first insights into the tremendous impact that frugivore extinction has on plant colonization dynamics over 300 years. The dramatic loss of fleshy‐fruited plant diversity on historical lava flows highlights the irreplaceable dispersal role played by frugivores, especially large‐bodied species. The new species Ikaeria serusiauxii (Teloschistaceae, lichenized Ascomycetes) is described from the Madeira Archipelago, Canary Islands and continental Portugal. It is a crustose lichen on twigs and branches of trees and shrubs in xerophytic maritime vegetation. Superficially it is similar to Caloplaca cerina and C. haematites, from which it differs by the often black apothecium margin, very thick spore septa, black pycnidium ostioles, and the presence of the pigment Cinereorufa-green instead of Sedifolia-grey. ITS sequences suggest Ikaeria aurantiellina (syn. Caloplaca aegatica) as the closest relative. Added is a preliminary lichen checklist for Porto Santo (Madeira Archipelago, Macaronesia). Insular animals are thought to be under weak predation pressure and increased intraspecific competition compared with those on the mainland. Thus, insular populations are predicted to evolve 'slow' life histories characterized by fewer and smaller clutches of larger eggs, a pattern called the 'island syndrome'. To test this pattern, we collected data on egg volume, clutch size and laying frequency of 31 Aegean Island populations of the closely related geckos of the Mediodactylus kotschyi species complex. We tested how predation pressure, resource abundance, island area and isolation influenced reproductive traits. Isolation and predation were the main drivers of variation in life-history traits. Higher predator richness seemed to promote faster life histories, perhaps owing to predation on adults, whereas the presence of boas promoted slower life histories, perhaps owing to release from predation by rats on the eggs of geckos. Insular geckos followed only some of the predictions of the 'island syndrome'. Predation pressure seemed to be more complex than expected and drove life histories of species in two opposing directions. Successful island colonizations are key events to understand range dynamic processes, but studying a young population right after it reaches establishment is a rare opportunity in natural systems. The genetic structure of a recently established population may offer unique insights into its colonization history and demographic processes that are important for a successful colonization. Here, we studied the population genetics of a recently established island population of Eurasian blackbirds (Aves: Turdus merula) located on the island of Heligoland in the German North Sea. Using microsatellites, we genotyped the majority of the island population, including the nestlings, over a 4-year period between 2004 and 2007. We also genotyped high numbers of migrants on stopover and mainland individuals, as they are potential founders of the island population. We identified two genetic clusters that comply with the migrating and mainland birds. While most of the island birds belong to the mainland cluster, some breeding individuals and a low fraction of the offspring belong to the genetic cluster found in migrating individuals with almost no admixture between the two, pointing to assortative mating acting on the island population. We did not find any evidence for founder events and detected deviations from the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium that disappeared in cohorts of older age that coincide with a lower number of siblings in older cohorts. The observed genetic patterns unravel a complex colonization history to which migratory and mainland birds have contributed and which is characterized by assortative mating. Further research will be directed towards habitat selection and phenotypic differences as potential drivers of assortative mating in this island population.

Many theoretical studies have suggested that disruptive selection plays an important role in phenotypic divergence, but few studies have determined the action of disruptive selection on phenotypic divergence via field studies. This study investigated the effect of disruptive selection on shell colour polymorphism in the Japanese land snail Euhadra peliomphala simodae to determine whether extreme phenotypes of snail shell colour are favoured over intermediate phenotypes. We conducted field surveys on an oceanic island with black, yellow and intermediate-coloured E. p. simodae snails. We captured and marked ~1800 individual snails and monitored their survival over 18 months. We quantified shell colours against images and examined the frequency distribution of shell colour variation. The variation exhibited a bimodal distribution with a far lower frequency of intermediate-coloured snails than of black or yellow snails. The population sizes of the three snail groups fluctuated synchronously with the changing seasons. Bayesian estimates showed lower survival rates for juvenile intermediate-coloured snails than for juvenile black and yellow snails, implying there was disruptive selection associated with shell colour. We suggest this disruptive selection may have resulted in the evolutionary divergence of the snail's shell colour within the lineage having high shell colour variation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Cabo Verde archipelago, Campanula spp. (bellflowers) are currently represented by four endemic species restricted to mountainous islands (C. bravensis , C. feijoana , C. hortelensis and C. jacobaea), all of which are known for high floral polymorphism. Diagnostic features of the corolla often differ from original descriptions, bringing into question their taxonomic delimitation. Based on the variations in the corolla shape observed during fieldwork, eight morphogeographical entities were distinguished among the taxa in the archipelago. Geometric morphometrics was used to quantify and examine these floral variations. Corolla morphology of 221 photographed flowers was captured by 2D landmarks and semi-landmarks configurations and analysed with canonical variate analysis. The results show agreement between morphological groupings and their geographical ranges. For most entities, the geographical origin may be determined with accurate morphological examination of the flower. In this case, the corolla shape proves to be a taxonomically discriminant trait. Furthermore, the terminology used until now to characterize these different floral forms is discussed. The present study contributes significantly to clarifying the floral polymorphism in Cabo Verdean Campanula and suggests that taxonomic revision of this group is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural hybridization often occurs between insular and widespread species, and investigating these hybridization patterns is important in improving our understanding of the evolution of insular plant species. To this end, we studied the floral morphology and genetic structure of the widespread species Calanthe discolor , the insular closely related species C. izu-insularis and their putative natural hybrids on Honshu Island (mainland) and the Izu Islands (oceanic islands), Japan, using microsatellite markers. Natural hybridization probably occurred on all the investigated Izu Islands in Japan, although C. izu-insularis was morphologically and genetically different from C. discolor. Bumblebees and other relatively large bees are not distributed in the Izu Islands and therefore natural hybridization would have occurred via pollination by relatively small solitary bees that are pollinators of both Calanthe spp. We also showed that in the islands more remote from the mainland, the proportions of insular C. izu-insularis increased and the floral morphologies of both species changed. The results suggested that insular C. izu-insularis evolved on the Izu Islands and the widespread C. discolor adapted to the poor pollinator fauna on oceanic islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DNA barcoding has been largely successful in differentiating animal species, but the most effective loci and evaluative methods for plants are still debated. Floras of young, oceanic islands are a challenging test of DNA barcodes, because of rapid speciation, high incidence of hybridization and polyploidy. We used character-based, tree-based and genetic distance-based methods to test DNA barcoding of 385 species of native Hawaiian plants constituting 20 lineages at the nuclear ITS(2) locus, nine lineages at each of the plastid loci trnH-psbA and rbcL , eight lineages at the plastid locus matK and four lineages with concatenated data. We also incorporated geographical range information and tested if varying sample sizes within a lineage influenced identification success. Average discrimination success was low (22% maximum) with all methods of analysis across all loci. The character-based method generally provided the highest identification success, there were limited benefits from incorporating geographical data and no relationship between number of species sampled in a lineage and identification success was found. Percentages of identification success are the lowest reported in a DNA barcoding study of comparable scale, and multi-species groups that radiated in the Hawaiian archipelago probably cannot be identified based on current DNA barcoding loci and methodologies. Island populations often differ in consistent ways from their mainland counterparts with respect to their ecology, behaviour, morphology, demography and life-history characteristics; a set of changes referred to as the 'island syndrome'. To understand the ecological and evolutionary drivers of the island syndrome requires characterization of suites of interacting traits. While patterns in some types of traits, e.g. body size, are well characterized across a range of taxa, key gaps remain. Growth rate is one such trait, being an important determinant of both increases and decreases in body size, and can vary with changes in predation pressure and food limitation; two factors that are known to differ between mainland and island environments. Using a phylogenetic meta-analytic approach, we characterize differences in growth rates among mainland and island altricial bird populations, controlling for environmental factors. We found a trend towards slower growth on islands in small-bodied (less than 1 kg) bird species. This is consistent with the idea that the pattern of body size increases in small-bodied island colonists is associated with the evolution of slower growth combined with shifts in age and size at maturity in relaxed predation regimes. Nonnative rodents pose a grave threat to many species on islands where they have been introduced. We surveyed accumulated food contents of husking stations, sheltered areas that rats use to process their collected food items, to gain insight into diets of invasive rodents and their potential effects on plant communities on the Hawaiian island of O'ahu. We examined 59 husking stations in four forests across the island in the summer of 2015. Camera traps documented only black rats (Rattus rattus) using the stations. A combination of vegetation surveys and seed rain traps was used to compare abundance of plant species in husking stations with their abundance in the forest. Overall, we identified 13,007 potential food items, including seeds or husks from 15 plant species, plus the remains of snails, arthropods, and other invertebrates. The only native plant species was the tree Nestegis sandwicensis (Oleaceae). We found almost no evidence of successful germination, indicating that rodents, at least in the context of items brought to husking stations, are acting primarily as seed predators in this system. Aims The 50th anniversary of the publication of the seminal book, The Theory of Island Biogeography, by Robert H. MacArthur and Edward O. Wilson, is a timely moment to review and identify key research foci that could advance island biology. Here, we take a collaborative horizon-scanning approach to identify 50 fundamental questions for the continued development of the field. Location Worldwide. Methods We adapted a well-established methodology of horizon scanning to identify priority research questions in island biology, and initiated it during the Island Biology 2016 conference held in the Azores. A multidisciplinary working group prepared an initial pool of 187 questions. A series of online surveys was then used to refine a list of the 50 top priority questions. The final shortlist was restricted to questions with a broad conceptual scope, and which should be answerable through achievable research approaches. Results Questions were structured around four broad and partially overlapping island topics, including: (Macro)Ecology and Biogeography, (Macro)Evolution, Community Ecology, and Conservation and Management. These topics were then subdivided according to the following subject areas: global diversity patterns (five questions in total); island ontogeny and past climate change (4); island rules and syndromes (3); island biogeography theory (4); immigration-speciation-extinction dynamics (5); speciation and diversification (4); dispersal and colonization (3); community assembly (6); biotic interactions (2); global change (5); conservation and management policies (5); and invasive alien species (4). Main conclusions Collectively, this cross-disciplinary set of topics covering the 50 fundamental questions has the potential to stimulate and guide future research in island biology. By covering fields ranging from biogeography, community ecology and evolution to global change, this horizon scan may help to foster the formation of interdisciplinary research networks, enhancing joint efforts to better understand the past, present and future of island biotas. Calanthe izuinsularisis a rare, beautiful and fragrant orchid endemic to the Izu archipelago. Although it is known that mainland populations of closely relatedCalanthespecies are pollinated by medium- to large-sized bees, it is likely thatC. izuinsularishas been forced to alter its floral biology to attract alternative pollinators, as large-sized bees are rarely found on the Izu Islands. Indeed, the unusual floral characteristics ofC. izuinsularis, which produces pale flowers that emit a strong and fragrant scent during the night, are considered the adaptation to a moth-pollinator syndrome. As expected, our time-lapse photography using a digital camera revealed that the inflorescences ofC. izuinsulariswere most frequently visited by nocturnal moths such as Noctuidae, Geometridae and Crambidae, which accounted for 50% of all insect visits (in terms of both the number of frames with captured visitors and the number of times visited). However, our study could not provide evidence of a pollinator shift towards moths because none of the moth species was observed with pollinaria. On the other hand, our study found that the pollinaria ofC. izuinsulariscould become attached to the mesothorax of the small-sized sweat beeLasioglossum occidens. Therefore, our study suggests thatC. izuinsularisis still somewhat dependent on bee pollination, while the orchid has changed its floral colouration and scent. The occurrence of bee-pollination inC. izuinsulariswould provide an explanation for how the natural hybridisation betweenC. aristulifera,C. discolorandC. izuinsulariscan occur. Soon after his return from the Malay Archipelago, Alfred Russel Wallace published one of his most signifcant papers. The paper used butterfies of the family Papilionidae as a model system for testing evolutionary hypotheses, and included a revision of the Papilionidae of the region, as well as the description of some 20 new species. Wallace argued that the Papilionidae were the most advanced butterfies, against some of his colleagues such as Bates and Trimen who had claimed that the Nymphalidae were more advanced because of their possession of vestigial forelegs. In a very important section, Wallace laid out what is perhaps the clearest Darwinist defnition of the differences between species, geographic subspecies, and local ‘varieties.’ He also discussed the relationship of these taxonomic categories to what is now termed ‘reproductive isolation.’ While accepting reproductive isolation as a cause of species, he rejected it as a defnition. Instead, species were recognized as forms that overlap spatially and lack intermediates. However, this morphological distinctness argument breaks down for discrete polymorphisms, and Wallace clearly emphasised the conspecifcity of non-mimetic males and female Batesian mimetic morphs in Papilio polytes, and also in P. memnon, on the grounds of reproductive continuity. Charles Elton proposed that high species diversity and low levels of disturbance provide a measure of biotic resistance against invasions by alien species. While there is some evidence for this hypothesis, there are numerous other factors associated with invasive species richness, and the strength of those relationships is often scale-dependent. Among oceanic island groups, habitat diversity, human population size and economic activity have been identified as among the significant drivers of invasive species richness. However, intra-island patterns are rarely analyzed. We investigate the relationship between the number of invasive seed plant species and human, physical and biotic factors among municipalities of the tropical island of Puerto Rico using Generalized Linear Models. While elevation amplitude and, to a lesser extent, area had significant effects on the diversity of the most abundant invasive species, we found that the best models, according to Akaike Information Criterion, consistently involve a positive relationship between the number of invasive and native species. Moreover, when we examined the relationship between forest reserves and those regions without reserves, proportionately fewer invasive species occur in forest reserves where native species richness is higher, resource competition is presumably greater, and human impacts are no longer as pervasive. Because the invasive species pool consists almost entirely of ruderal species, forest reserves, while not impenetrable, are less susceptible to invasions than the heavily human-impacted landscapes. Feeding habits of snakes on Kinkasan Island, where potential food resources for snakes is limited, was investigated based on field surveys of six years. In total 280 snakes, which consisted of five species ( Elaphe quadrivirgata, E. climacophora, Euprepiophis conspicillatus, Rhabdophis tigrinus, and Gloydius blomhoffii), were collected. A total of 168 prey items were recovered from the stomach contents of these snakes. The diet of R. tigrinus and G. blomhoffii exclusively consisted of a frog, Rana tagoi, which is the only amphibian species inhabiting Kinkasan Island. Diet of El. quadrivirgata was also predominantly comprised of Ra. tagoi ( 97.7%). O nly e ndothermic animals were found in the stomach contents of El. climacophora and Eu. conspicillatus. Direct observations of feeding behavior and a broad range of body temperature of El. quadrivirgata indicated that during the breeding season of Ra. tagoi, this snake forages for frogs hiding in crevices of rocks immersed in cold running water of mountain streams. Our study demonstrated that, given the limited prey fauna on Kinkasan Island, two dietary generalists, El. quadrivirgata and G. blomhoffii, and one amphibian specialist, R. tigrinus, largely rely on the single frog species as major diet. High exploitation of Ra. tagoi by El. quadrivirgata would be attained by its unique foraging tactics that are characterized by a shuttling movement between hot basking rocks and cold streams for foraging. Human activity has facilitated the introduction of a number of alien mammal species to the Galápagos Archipelago. Understanding the phylogeographic history and population genetics of invasive species on the Archipelago is an important step in predicting future spread and designing effective management strategies. In this study, we describe the invasion pathway of Rattus rattus across the Galápagos using microsatellite data, coupled with historical knowledge. Microsatellite genotypes were generated for 581 R. rattus sampled from 15 islands in the archipelago. The genetic data suggest that there are at least three genetic lineages of R. rattus present on the Galápagos Islands. The spatial distributions of these lineages correspond to the main centers of human settlement in the archipelago. There was limited admixture among these three lineages, and these finding coupled with low rates of gene flow among island populations suggests that interisland movement of R. rattus is rare. Sexually selected traits are often condition-dependent and are expected to be affected by genome-wide distributed deleterious mutations and inbreeding. However, sexual selection is a powerful selective force that can counteract inbreeding through purging of deleterious mutations. Inbreeding and purging of the inbreeding load for sexually selected traits has rarely been studied across natural populations with different degrees of inbreeding. Here we investigate inbreeding effects (measured as marker-based heterozygosity) on condition-dependent sexually selected signalling trait and other morphological traits across islet- and mainland populations ( n = 15) of an endemic lizard species ( Podarcis gaigeae). Our data suggest inbreeding depression on a condition-dependent sexually selected signalling character among mainland subpopulations with low or intermediate levels of inbreeding, but no sign of inbreeding depression among small and isolated islet populations despite their higher overall inbreeding levels. In contrast, there was no such pattern among ten other morphological traits which are primarily naturally selected and presumably not involved in sexual signalling. These results are in line with purging of recessive deleterious alleles, or purging in combination with stochastic fixation of alleles by genetic drift, for a sexual signalling character in the islet environment, which is characterized by low population sizes and strong sexual selection. Higher clutch sizes in islet populations also raise interesting questions regarding the possibility of antagonistic pleiotropy.
