Tuuppaukset ovat psykologisen vaikuttamisen keinoja, joille on yhteistä se, että ne eivät ole luonteeltaan pakottavia. Polttomoottoriautojen korvaaminen sähköautoilla vähentäisi liikenteen päästöjä. Miten liikenteen sähköistymistä voitaisiin edistää eettisesti erinomaisilla tuuppauksilla? Kysymykseen vastataan soveltamalla sähköautotuuppauksiin aiemmassa tutkimuksessa identifioituja ja ilmastotuuppauksille tyypillisiä eettisesti relevantteja piirteitä: (1) ilmastotuuppausten muita hyödyttävä luonne; (2) ilmastotoimikielteisten huomioiminen; (3) varmuus parhaista toimintavaihtoehdoista, (4) oikeudenmukaisuus; (5) läpinäkyvyys; ja (6) ilmastotuuppausten teho. Analyysissä päädytään seuraaviin käytännöllisiin suosituksiin: Sähköautotuuppaukset tulisi ensisijaisesti kohdistaa yksilöihin tai perheisiin, joiden varallisuus riittää sähköauton hankintaan sekä niihin, jotka joka tapauksessa autoilisivat. Erityisesti sähköautotuuppausten suunnittelijoiden tulee kiinnittää huomiota siihen, etteivät tuuppaa ilmastoystävällisempää liikkumistapaa käyttäviä siirtymään sähköauton käyttäjiksi. Sähköautotuuppauksiin olisi hyvä yhdistää tuuppauksia sitä ilmastoystävällisempiin liikkumisen muotoihin. Sähköautotuuppausten tulee olla läpinäkyviä paitsi, jos läpinäkymättömyydelle on hyvät perusteet. Sähköautotuuppauksia suunniteltaessa ja toteutettaessa tulisi viherpesun välttämiseksi pyrkiä arvioimaan niiden tehoa ja vaikutuksia verrattuna niille vaihtoehtoisiin ilmastotoimiin., Nudges are a group of different ways of altering human behavior without forbidding any options. Replacing internal combustion engine cars with electric cars would diminish emissions from traffic. Is it possible to use ethically excellent nudges to enhance the use of electric cars? The question is answered by applying the following six ethically relevant factors (identified in an earlier study) to nudges for electric cars: (1) the other-regarding nature of climate nudges; (2) how to take climate change denialists into account; (3) certainty regarding the right or best behaviours; (4) justice concerns; (5) transparency; and (6) the efficacy of climate nudges. The outcome of the analysis are the following practical recommendations: Nudges for electric cars should be targeted to those, who can afford an electric car and to those, who will not give up using a passenger car. Nudges for electric cars should be accompanied by nudges for more climate friendly forms of transport. Nudges for electric cars should by transparent unless there are good reasons for them being opaque. In order to avoid green wash, the efficacy of nudges of electric cars should evaluated when planning them or carrying them out.

Water transparency can be measured with optical instruments and estimated with satellite sensors, but such measurements have been widely available for only a few decades. Estimates of water transparency using a white disk called a Secchi disk have been made for over a century and can be used to estimate long-term trends. However, historic in situ measurements of the Secchi depth (ZSd) were irregular in space and time and are difficult to interpret in regular time series due to biases introduced by changing locations and the timing of measurements. Satellite data time series, on the other hand, have consistent resolution in both space and time but cover too short a time to resolve climate-scale trends. We normalized historic ZSd measurements in the Baltic Sea with a satellite-derived mean climatology at 5 d temporal and 4 km spatial resolutions and created a merged time series of ZSd for the last century. The mean ZSd in the Baltic Sea from 1927-2020 decreased by 4.2 ± 0.6 m at a rate of 0.045 ± 0.06 m yr-1. Most of the change happened before 1987, and a further decrease was evident primarily in the satellite data during the 1998-2008 period. After 2008, no significant trend in ZSd and or the coefficient of diffuse light attenuation was detected in the Baltic Sea. However, in some sub-basins of the Baltic Sea, the decrease in ZSd continued even after that. The decrease in spectral water transparency in recent decades was highest in the 412 nm band, indicating an increase in the concentration of chromophoric dissolved organic matter.

Käytäntökuvaus havainnollistaa kahta erilaista ryhmälähtöistä tanssiprojektia, jotka molemmat tutkivat yksilön suhdetta ekologisiin kriiseihin sekä ilmastonmuutoksen herättämiin tunteisiin. Käytäntökuvaus avaa ymmärrystä siitä, miten monimuotoisen ryhmän kanssa toteutettu esitysprojekti voi toimia alustana ilmastonmuutoksen käsittelyssä. Ensimmäinen projekti oli nimeltään #LUFT (suom. ilma). Se toteutettiin Saksassa Herneessä 9–17-vuotiaiden lasten ja nuorten kanssa. Ryhmä oli hyvin monimuotoinen erilaisten kulttuuritaustojen ja osallistujien ikäerojen vuoksi. #LUFT esitystä harjoiteltiin syksyn 2019 aikana, ja projekti sai ensi-iltansa Flottmannhallen-kulttuuritalossa marraskuussa 2019. Toinen projekti, ILMA-tanssiteos, toteutettiin Zodiakissa, joka on Helsingissä sijaitseva uuden tanssin keskus, yhdessä monimuotoisen ja ylisukupolvisen ryhmän kanssa. Ryhmän osallistujat olivat 14–84-vuotiaita. ILMA tutki tanssin keinoin ilmastonmuutoksen herättämiä tunteita sekä luontosuhdetta tässä ajassa. ILMA sai ensi-iltansa Zodiak Uuden tanssin keskuksessa maaliskuussa 2020. #LUFT- ja ILMA-projektit rakennettiin samankaltaisia työkaluja käyttäen, ja esitysmateriaalin tuottivat esiintyjät itse autobiografisten harjoitteiden, tanssi-improvisaation ja keskustelun keinoin. The description offers examples of how performance projects can function as a platform for broader dialogue in the context of climate education. #LUFT explored climate change together with 9–17-year old participants from Herne, Germany. The project was rehearsed during the autumn of 2019 and premiered in November 2019 at Flottmannhallen, Herne. ILMA was a dance performance project with participants aged between 14–84 years from various backgrounds. ILMA premiered at the Zodiak New Dance Centre in Helsinki, March 2020. The participants of both performances were found via open call. The creations of #LUFT and ILMA were based on similar methods to use the participants' own memories and ideas through autobiographical performance tools, dance improvisation, and dialogue. This description draws from personal experiences as a director and reflections collected from the participants of both groups.

Beijing suffers from poor air quality, particularly during wintertime haze episodes when concentrations of PM2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter 400 µg m−3. Black carbon (BC), an aerosol which strongly absorbs solar radiation, can make up to 10 % of PM2.5 in Beijing. BC is of interest due to its climatic and health impacts. BC has also been found to impact planetary boundary layer (PBL) meteorology. Through interacting with radiation and altering the thermal profile of the lower atmosphere, BC can either suppress or enhance PBL development depending on the properties and altitude of the BC layer. Previous research assessing the impact of BC on PBL meteorology has been investigated through the use of regional models, which are limited both by resolution and the chosen boundary layer schemes. In this work, we apply a high-resolution model (UCLALES-SALSA) that couples an aerosol and radiative transfer model with large-eddy simulation (LES) to quantify the impact of BC at different altitudes on PBL dynamics using conditions from a specific haze episode which occurred from 1–4 December 2016 in Beijing. Results presented in this paper quantify the heating rate of BC at various altitudes to be between 0.01 and 0.016 K/h per µg/m3 of BC, increasing with altitude but decreasing around PBL top. Through utilising a high-resolution model which explicitly calculates turbulent dynamics, this paper showcases the impact of BC on PBL dynamics both within and above the PBL. These results show that BC within the PBL increases maximum PBL height by 0.4 % but that the same loading of BC above the PBL can suppress PBL height by 6.5 %. Furthermore, when BC is present throughout the column, the impact of BC suppressing PBL development is further maximised, with BC causing a 17 % decrease in maximum PBL height compared to only scattering aerosols. Assessing the impact of these opposite effects, in this paper, we present a mechanism through which BC may play a prominent role in the intensity and longevity of Beijing's pollution episodes.

Purpose of Review Boreal forests provide a wide range of ecosystem services that are important to society. The boreal biome is experiencing the highest rates of warming on the planet and increasing demand for forest products. Here, we review how changes in climate and its associated extreme events (e.g., windstorms) are putting at risk the capacity of these forests to continue providing ecosystem services. We further analyze the role of forest management to increase forest resilience to the combined effects of climate change and extreme events. Recent Findings Enhancing forest resilience recently gained a lot of interest from theoretical perspective. Yet, it remains unclear how to translate the theoretical knowledge into practice and how to operationalize boreal forest management to maintain forest ecosystem services and functions under changing global conditions. We identify and summarize the main management approaches (natural disturbance emulation, landscape functional zoning, functional complex network, and climate-smart forestry) that can promote forest resilience. Summary We review the concept of resilience in forest sciences, how extreme events may put boreal forests at risk, and how management can alleviate or promote such risks. We found that the combined effects of increased temperatures and extreme events are having negative impacts on forests. Then, we discuss how the main management approaches could enhance forest resilience and multifunctionality (simultaneous provision of high levels of multiple ecosystem services and species habitats). Finally, we identify the complementary strengths of individual approaches and report challenges on how to implement them in practice.

As the linkages between extreme weather events, changes in climatic conditions and health impacts in exposed populations become clearer, so does the need for climate-smart decisions aimed at making the public health sector more responsive and resilient. By integrating climate and health information, climate services for health provide robust decision-support tools. The Lancet Countdown monitoring system uses global climate reanalyses products to track annual changes in a set of health-related outcomes. In the monitoring system, multiple variables from reanalysis datasets such as ERA5 and ERA5-Land are retrieved and processed to capture heatwaves, precipitation extremes, wildfires, droughts, warming and ecosystem changes across the globe and over multiple decades. This reanalysis-derived information is then input into a hazard–exposure–vulnerability framework that delivers, as outcomes, indicators tracking the year-by-year impacts of climate-related hazards on human mortality, labour capacity, physical activity, sentiment, infectious disease transmission, and food security and undernutrition. Building on the reanalysis gridded format, the indicators create worldwide ‘maps without gaps’ of climate–health linkages. Our experience shows that reanalysis datasets allow standardization across the climate information used in the framework, making the system potentially adaptable to multiple geographical scales. An ongoing challenge is to quantify how the inherent bias of global reanalyses influences indicator outcomes. We foresee the health sector as a key user of reanalysis products. Therefore, public health professionals and health impact modellers should be involved in the co-development of future iterations of reanalysis datasets, to reach finer spatial resolutions and provide a wider set of health-relevant climate variables.

An important process is new particle formation (NPF), from gas-phase precursors, which provides a climate forcing effect. NPF has been studied comprehensively at different sites in the Arctic, ranging from those in the High Arctic and those at Svalbard to those in the continental Arctic, but no harmonised analysis has been performed on all sites simultaneously, with no calculations of key NPF parameters available for some sites. Here, we analyse the formation and growth of new particles from six long-term ground-based stations in the Arctic (Alert, Villum, Tiksi, Zeppelin Mountain, Gruvebadet, and Utqiaġvik). Our analysis of particle formation and growth rates in addition to back-trajectory analysis shows a summertime maxima in the frequency of NPF and particle formation rate at all sites, although the mean frequency and particle formation rates themselves vary greatly between sites, with the highest at Svalbard and lowest in the High Arctic. The summertime growth rate, condensational sinks, and vapour source rates show a slight bias towards the southernmost sites, with vapour source rates varying by around an order of magnitude between the northernmost and southernmost sites. Air masses back-trajectories during NPF at these northernmost sites are associated with large areas of sea ice and snow, whereas events at Svalbard are associated with more sea ice and ocean regions. Events at the southernmost sites are associated with large areas of land and sea ice. These results emphasise how understanding the geographical variation in surface type across the Arctic is key to understanding secondary aerosol sources and providing a harmonised analysis of NPF across the Arctic, This research has been supported by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (grant nos. Living in high latitudes and altitudes sets specific requirements on species’ ability to forecast seasonal changes and to respond to them in an appropriate way. Adaptation into diverse environmental conditions can also lead to ecological speciation through habitat isolation or by inducing changes in traits that influence assortative mating. In this review, we explain how the unique time-measuring systems of Drosophila virilis group species have enabled the species to occupy high latitudes and how the traits involved in species reproduction and survival exhibit strong linkage with latitudinally varying photoperiodic and climatic conditions. We also describe variation in reproductive barriers between the populations of two species with overlapping distributions and show how local adaptation and the reinforcement of prezygotic barriers have created partial reproductive isolation between conspecific populations. Finally, we consider the role of species-specific chromosomal inversions and the X chromosome in the development of reproductive barriers between diverging lineages. peerReviewed

Aim We use lake phytoplankton community data to quantify the spatio-temporal and scale-dependent impacts of eutrophication, land-use and climate change on species niches and community assembly processes while accounting for species traits and phylogenetic constraints. Location Finland. Time period 1977–2017. Major taxa Phytoplankton. Methods We use hierarchical modelling of species communities (HMSC) to model metacommunity trajectories at 853 lakes over four decades of environmental change, including a hierarchical spatial structure to account for scale-dependent processes. Using a “region of common profile” approach, we evaluate compositional changes of species communities and trait profiles and investigate their temporal development. Results We demonstrate the emergence of novel and widespread community composition clusters in previously more compositionally homogeneous communities, with cluster-specific community trait profiles, indicating functional differences. A strong phylogenetic signal of species responses to the environment implies similar responses among closely related taxa. Community cluster-specific species prevalence indicates lower taxonomic dispersion within the current dominant clusters compared with the historically dominant cluster and an overall higher prevalence of smaller species sizes within communities. Our findings denote profound spatio-temporal structuring of species co-occurrence patterns and highlight functional differences of lake phytoplankton communities. Main conclusions Diverging community trajectories have led to a nationwide reshuffling of lake phytoplankton communities. At regional and national scales, lakes are not single entities but metacommunity hubs in an interconnected waterscape. The assembly mechanisms of phytoplankton communities are strongly structured by spatio-temporal dynamics, which have led to novel community types, but only a minor part of this reshuffling could be linked to temporal environmental change.

Ihmiskunnan toiminnasta aiheutuneet kasvihuonekaasupäästöt ovat lämmittäneet maapallon ilmastoa jo yli asteen. Merkittäviä muutoksia on havaittu mm. helleaaltojen ja rankkasateiden voimakkuudessa. Tulevaisuuden ilmastonmuutos riippuu ihmiskunnan päästöjen kehityksestä, mutta on varsin todennäköistä, että maapallon keskilämpötila nousee tällä vuosisadalla vielä noin 1–2 astetta lisää. Käynnissä oleva ilmaston lämpeneminen näkyy jo pääkaupunkiseudun ilmastossa. Monet havaitut muutokset ovat sopusoinnussa sen kanssa, mitä ihmiskunnan aiheuttama kasvihuoneilmiön voimistuminen tuo mukanaan. Viimeksi kuluneiden 60 vuoden aikana keskilämpötilat ovat nousseet kaikkina vuodenaikoina, mutta voimakkainta nousu on ollut talvella. Myös sademäärät ovat nousseet talvikaudella, mutta muina vuodenaikoina sateissa ei ole havaittavissa tilastollisesti merkitseviä trendejä. Keskimääräisten ilmasto-olosuhteiden lisäksi sään ääri-ilmiöistä helleaallot ovat voimistuneet, ja helteiden lisääntyminen on ollut voimakkaampaa pääkaupunkiseudun sisämaassa kuin rannikolla. Tähän raporttiin on myös päivitetty tuoreimmat ilmastonmuutosarviot perustuen IPCC:n kuudennessa arviointiraportissa käytettyihin CMIP6-ilmastomalleihin ja SSP-kasvihuonekaasuskenaarioihin. Keskinkertaisen SSP2-4.5 päästöskenaarion mukaan eri kuukausien keskilämpötilojen ennustetaan nousevan pääkaupunkiseudulla 2,5–3 astetta vuosista 1981–2010 vuosiin 2040–2069 mennessä. Nousu on hieman pienempää kuin Suomen alueella keskimäärin, ja muutokset ovat talvella jonkun verran suurempia kuin kesällä. Leudontuva talvi-ilmasto tarkoittaa lumen ja jääpeitteen vähentymistä entisestään. Kesäaikaan nouseva lämpötila tuo mukaan voimakkaampia helteitä, rankkasateita ja kuivuusjaksoja. Tuulisuudessa ei näy selkeitä muutossignaaleja, eikä siten talvimyrskyjen ennusteta olevan tulevaisuudessa selkeästi nykyistä voimakkaampia. Sen sijaan talvisten matalapaineiden mukanaan tuomat sademäärät lisääntyvät ja satavat yhä useammin vetenä. Meriveden ei ennusteta vielä vuosisadan puoliväliin mennessä juurikaan nousevan, mutta vuosisadan loppuun mennessä sen ennustetaan olevan noin 25 cm nykyistä tasoa korkeammalla. Kaikista optimistisimmankin päästöskenaarion mukaan pääkaupunkiseudun ilmasto lämpenisi yli asteen lisää 2080-lukuun mennessä. Tulevien sukupolvien kokema vuosisadan loppupuolen ilmasto riippuu suuresti ihmiskunnan päästöistä, ja jonkinasteiseen muutokseen on oltava valmiita varautumaan. Toisaalta pitää tiedostaa, että pääkaupunkiseudun ilmasto on luonnostaan hyvin vaihteleva, ja siksi tulevaisuudessa voi esiintyä kylmiäkin ajanjaksoja. Växthusgasutsläpp orsakade av mänsklig verksamhet har redan värmt upp jordens klimat med mer än en grad. Betydande förändringar har observerats till exempel i intensiteten av värmeböljor och kraftiga regn. Framtida klimatförändringar beror på̊ människans utsläpp av växthusgaser, men det är ganska sannolikt att jordens medeltemperatur kommer att stiga med ytterligare 1–2 grader under detta århundrade. Den pågående uppvärmningen är redan synlig i huvudstadsregionens klimat. Många av de observerade förändringarna stämmer överens med vad människans förorsakade intensifiering av växthuseffekten medför. Under de senaste 60 åren har medeltemperaturen stigit under alla årstider, men uppvärmningen har varit kraftigast under vintern. Nederbörden har även ökat under vintersäsongen, men inga statistiskt säkerställda förändringar kan observeras i nederbörden under de andra årstiderna. Utöver de genomsnittliga klimatförhållandena har värmeböljorna intensifierats och värmeökningen har varit kraftigare i inlandet än vid kusten i huvudstadsregionen. Denna rapport har också uppdaterats med de senaste uppskattningarna av klimatförändringarna, vilka är baserade på̊ CMIP6 klimatmodeller och SSP växthusgasscenarier som används i IPCC:s sjätte utvärderingsrapport. Enligt det genomsnittliga utsläppsscenariot SSP2-4.5 förutspås medeltemperaturen för olika månader att stiga i huvudstadsregionen med 2,5–3 grader från åren 1981–2010 till 2040–2069. Ökningen är något mindre än medeltalet i Finland och förändringarna är något större på̊ vintern än under sommaren. Ett mildare vinterklimat innebär en ytterligare minskning av snö- och istäcket. Den stigande temperaturen på sommaren ger starkare värmeböljor, kraftiga regn och perioder med torka. Det finns inga tydliga tecken i förändringar i vindförhållanden, och därför förutspås att vinterstormar inte blir starkare i framtiden än vad de är nu. Istället ökar nederbördsmängderna i samband med vinterlågtryck och nederbörden förekommer oftare i form av regn. Havsnivån förutspås inte stiga mycket före mitten av seklet, men i slutet av århundradet kan havsnivån stiga med cirka 25 cm från nuvarande nivå̊ . Enligt det mest optimistiska utsläppsscenariot skulle klimatet i huvudstadsregionen värmas upp med mer än en grad tills 2080-talet. Klimatet som de kommande generationerna kommer att uppleva i slutet av seklet är alltså̊ starkt beroende av människans utsläpp, och man måste vara redo att förbereda sig till en viss grad av förändring. Däremot måste man vara medveten om att klimatet i huvudstadsregionen har naturligt stor variation och därför kan kalla perioder också förekomma i framtiden. Greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activity have already warmed the climate of Earth by more than one degree. Significant changes have been observed e.g. in the intensity of heatwaves and heavy rainfall. Future climate change depends on human emissions, but it is likely that the global mean temperature still rises by another 1–2 degrees by the end of this century. The ongoing global warming is already visible in the climate of the capital region. Many of the observed changes are consistent with what human-caused intensification of the greenhouse effect will bring. During the past 60 years, the average temperatures have risen in all seasons, but the strongest warming has been observed in winter. Precipitation has increased in the winter season, but no statistically significant trends in precipitation can be observed in other seasons. In addition to the average climatic conditions, heatwaves have intensified with a stronger increase in the inland regions than on the coast. In this report, the latest climate change projections based on CMIP6 climate models and SSP greenhouse gas scenarios used in the IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report are presented. According to the moderate SSP2-4.5 emission scenario, the average temperatures are predicted to rise in the capital region by 2.5–3 degrees in all months from the period 1981–2010 by the period 2040–2069. The warming is slightly weaker than in Finland on average, and the changes are somewhat larger in winter than in summer. A milder winter climate results in a further decrease in snow and ice cover. The rising temperatures in summer bring stronger heatwaves, heavy rainfalls and prolonged periods of droughts. There are no clear signs of change in the windiness, and thus winter storms are not predicted to be notably stronger in the future than they are now. Instead, the amount of precipitation induced by winter cyclones increases and comes more often as rain than snow. The sea level is not projected to rise much by the mid-century, but by the end of the century it is estimated to rise by about 25 cm from its current level. Even according to the most optimistic emission scenario, the climate in the capital region would warm by more than one degree by the 2080s. The climate change by the end of the century experienced by future generations is highly dependent on human emissions, and one must be ready to prepare for some degree of change. On the other hand, the climate in the capital region is subject to significant natural variability, and therefore cold periods of weather may occur also in the future.

Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena oli tarkastella, miten Suomessa toimivissa finanssialan yhtiöissä on seurattu ilmastoon liittyvien taloudellisten tietojen julkistamista käsittelevän työryhmän TCFD:n (The Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure) vuonna 2017 julkaisemia suosituksia ilmastoon liittyvästä raportoinnista. TCFD:n suosituksia noudattava raportointi perustuu raportoivien organisaatioiden omaan harkintaan siitä, minkä tiedon haluavat sidosryhmilleen jakaa. Työryhmän laatimien suositusten tavoitteena on muodostaa sidosryhmille lisäarvoa ja vertailukelpoista tietoa sisältävä yhtenäinen raportointimalli, jota sidosryhmät voivat käyttää apunaan päätöksenteossa. Suositukset jakautuvat neljään kategoriaan; hallinto, strategia, riskienhallinta sekä mittarit ja tavoitteet. Tiivistetysti kategoriat ohjaavat yhtiötä raportoimaan hallinnosta ilmastoon liittyvissä riskeissä ja mahdollisuuksissa, ilmastoon liittyvien riskien ja mahdollisuuksien vaikutuksista strategiaan, liiketoimintaan ja taloudelliseen suunnitteluun, organisaation prosessista ilmastoriskien tunnistamisessa, arvioinnissa ja hallitsemisessa sekä yhtiön käyttämistä mittareista ja ilmastoon liittyvistä tavoitteista. Tutkimus perustui 16 julkisesti TCFD:tä kannattavan finanssialanyhtiön perusjoukkoon, josta suoritettiin rajaus raportointiajankohdan ja raportoinnin julkisuuden perusteella. Kohteeksi valikoitui kymmenen suomessa toimivan finanssialan yhtiötä: Aktia Oyj, Työeläkeyhtiö Elo, Evli Oyj, Työeläkeyhtiö Ilmarinen, Nordic Investment Bank, OP Varainhoito, Sampo Group, Säästöpankki, Kirkon eläkerahasto ja Työelä-keyhtiö Varma. Tutkimus suoritettiin vertailevana poikittaistutkimuksena, jolle on ominaista ilmiön tutkiminen valittuna ajanjaksona. Teoreettinen viitekehys muodostuu agenttiteorian ja agenttiteoriasta tarkentuvan sidosryhmäteorian ympärille. Teoreettisen viitekehyksen toinen kokonaisuus käsittelee vastuullisuutta ja sen raportointimalleja, erityisesti TCFD:tä. TCFD:n suositusten ymmärtämiseksi kolmas kokonaisuus käsittelee riskienhallintaa ja ilmastoriskejä. Aineistona hyödynnettiin yhtiöiden julkista TCFD-raportointia vuodelta 2021. Tutkimuksen keskiössä on TCFD-raportoinnin riittävyys sidosryhmien näkökulmasta. TCFD:n suositusten tarkoituksena on ohjata raportoivia organisaatioita raportoimaan ilmastonmuutoksesta vaikutuksesta syntyvien ilmastoriskien ja mahdollisuuksien tiedot sekä näihin liittyvät hallintakeinot. Tässä tutkimuksessa ilmastonmuutoksesta syntyvät mahdollisuudet on rajattu tutkimuksen ulkopuolelle. Tutkimus perustui kahden tutkimuskysymyksen ympärille: ”Miten ilmastoriskit ovat kuvattu TCFD:n mukaisessa ilmastoraportoinnissa?” ja ”Miten yhtiöt ovat noudattaneet TCFD:n suositusta kuvatessaan ilmastoriskejä?”. Tutkimuksen tulosten perusteella yhtiöt noudattavat TCFD:n suosituksia vaihtelevasti sekä erilaisia raportointitapoja käyttäen. Ilmastoon liittyvät asiat ovat sisällytetty yhtiöiden toimintaan vastuullisen sijoittamisen periaatteilla ja vastuullisen sijoittamisen työ- tai johtoryhmillä. Yhtiöissä on tunnistettu ilmastoriskien raportoinnin ja työkalujen kehittämiskohteet ja työtä raportoinnin kehittämiseksi sekä hiilineutraalisuuden saavuttamiseksi tehdään. Yhtiöiden käyttämät mittarit ovat linjassa keskenään ja jokaisen yhtiön keskeinen tavoite on hiilineutraalisuuden saavuttaminen. Sidosryhmien näkökulmasta ilmastoriskien analysointi jää raportoinnissa kevyeksi, eikä lukijalle muodostu kokonaiskäsitystä ilmastoriskien vaikutuksista strategiaan tai liiketoimintaan. Ilmastoriskien tunnistamisen, arvioimisen ja hallitsemisen prosessia ei ole kuvattu kokonaisuudessaan, ja ilmastoriskien luokittelemiseksi vain yksi yhtiö on käyttänyt riskiluokkia. Raportointimallilla havaittiin olevan merkitystä sidosryhmän kokonaiskuvan muodostamiseksi.

Huoltovarmuuden keskiössä ovat yhteiskunnalle vakavat häiriötilanteet ja poikkeusolot, joihin yhteiskunta pyrkii varautumaan ja niissä toimimaan. Ajankohtaisia esimerkkejä ovat COVID-pandemia sekä meneillään oleva energiakriisi, joiden osalta myös Suomen huoltovarmuus on ollut vahvasti esillä. Myös sääilmiöt voivat aiheuttaa häiriötilanteita: Suomessa näitä ovat esimerkiksi myrskyt, rajuilmat, tulvat ja kuivuus, jotka voivat ainakin periaatteessa lamaannuttaa yhteiskuntaa. Sääilmiöiden vaikutuksiin varautuminen on mahdollista, mutta asiaa hankaloittaa meneillään oleva ilmaston nopea muuttuminen. Vaikutuksia aiheuttavista sääilmiöistä osa on nopeita ja rajuja (esim. voimakas rajuilma) ja osa puolestaan muodostuu hitaammin (esim. pitkät hellejaksot), ja ilmastonmuutos vaikuttaa ilmiöihin eri tavoin. Tässä työssä perehdyttiin siihen, millaisia arvioituja vaikutuksia ilmastonmuutoksella on Suomen huoltovarmuuteen. Lähtökohtana oli Huoltovarmuuskeskuksen kanssa järjestettyjen työpajojen sekä asiantuntijahaastattelujen avulla saada käsitys siitä, mitkä sääilmiöt ja säätilanteet ovat huoltovarmuuden kannalta keskeisiä ja mitkä huoltovarmuuden toimialat ovat haavoittuvimmat. Haastatteluiden ohella työssä käytiin läpi menneitä merkittäviä säätilanteita, joilla tiedetään olleen merkittäviä yhteiskunnallisia vaikutuksia. Myös viimeaikaisesta kirjallisuudesta poimittiin tietoa mm. eri toimialojen haavoittuvuuksista sekä sopeutumiskyvystä. Koottuun tietoon yhdistettiin arviot ilmastonmuutoksen vaikutuksista tunnistettuihin ilmiöihin, jolloin saatiin ensikäsitys siitä, miten ilmastonmuutos vaikuttaa Suomen huoltovarmuuteen. Tulosten pohjalta voidaan todeta, että ilmastonmuutoksen vaikutukset huoltovarmuuteen ovat varsin monisyisiä, johtuen etenkin sääilmiöiden laajasta kirjosta ja erilaisista vaikutusmekanismeista. Lisäksi asiaa hankaloittaa se, ettei ole olemassa selvää rajanvetoa siitä, mikä itse asiassa on huoltovarmuuskriittinen sääilmiö ja mikä ei. Voivatko esimerkiksi yleistyvien helteiden johdosta kasvavat haittavaikutukset terveydenhuollolle saavuttaa jossain vaiheessa vakavan yhteiskunnallisen häiriötilanteen, jos asiaan ei varauduta riittävästi etukäteen? Toinen keskeinen tulos on, että huoltovarmuuden kannalta ilmastonmuutoksen suorat vaikutukset ovat Suomessa hyvin pieniä verrattuna muualle maailmaan. Vaikka Suomessakin ilmasto on jo muuttunut huomattavasti ja muuttuu tulevaisuudessa edelleen, suurimmat huoltovarmuusvaikutukset näyttävät heijastuvan muualta: pahimpana tilanteena Huoltovarmuuskeskuksen asiantuntijat pitävät ruoan, veden ja elintilan puutetta maailmalla, jonka vaikutukset heijastuisivat myös Suomeen. Tätä huomiota tukevat myös Suomen ilmastonmuutosarviot. Toimialoista haavoittuvimmiksi koetaan elintarvike- ja energiahuolto sekä logistiikka. Työssä keskityttiin pääasiassa ilmastonmuutoksen suoriin vaikutuksiin eli ilmastonmuutoksen vaikutuksiin sääilmiöiden esiintymiseen. Työssä sivutaan kuitenkin myös epäsuoria eli muualta maailmalta heijastuvia vaikutuksia ja siirtymävaikutuksia, jotka johtuvat ilmastonmuutoksen hillintätoimista, etenkin nopeasta energiamurroksesta. I centrum för försörjningsberedskapen i samhället står beredskap för allvarliga störningar och exceptionella förhållanden, som samhället försöker förbereda sig för och agera i dem. Aktuella exempel är COVID-pandemin och den pågående energikrisen, där Finlands försörjningsberedskap också har lyfts fram. Även väderfenomen kan orsaka störningar: i Finland handlar det till exempel om stormar, hårda åskväder, översvämningar och torka, som åtminstone i princip kan förlama samhället. Det är möjligt att förbereda sig mot effekter av väderfenomen, men saken kompliceras av de pågående snabba klimatförändringarna. Vissa av väderfenomenen som orsakar effekter är snabba och våldsamma (t.ex. hård åska) medan en del utvecklas långsammare (t.ex. långa värmeböljor), och klimatförändringen påverkar fenomenen på olika sätt. Detta arbete fördjupade sig i att uppskatta effekterna av klimatförändringen på Finlands försörjningsberedskap. Utgångspunkten var att få en förståelse för vilka väderfenomen och vädersituationer som är centrala för försörjningsberedskapen och vilka sektorer inom försörjningsberedskapen som är mest utsatta, genom arbetsseminarium och expertintervjuer som anordnas tillsammans med Försörjningsberedskapscentralen. Utöver intervjuerna omfattade arbetet genomgång av tidigare signifikanta vädersituationer som man vet har haft betydande effekter i samhället. Information hämtades också från nyare litteratur, t.ex. om olika branschers sårbarhet och anpassningsförmåga. Klimatförändringens uppskattade effekter på de identifierade fenomenen kombinerades med den insamlade informationen, vilket resulterade i en första uppfattning om hur klimatförändringarna påverkar Finlands försörjningsberedskap. Baserat på resultaten kan man dra slutsatsen att klimatförändringens effekter på försörjningsberedskap är ganska komplexa, särskilt på grund av det breda spektrumet av väderfenomen och olika påverkningsmekanismer. Dessutom kompliceras saken av att det inte finns någon tydlig avgränsning av vad som egentligen är och inte är ett väderfenomen som är kritiskt för försörjningsberedskap. Kan till exempelvis de ökande negativa effekterna på hälso- och sjukvården på grund av de allt vanliga värmeförhållandena någon gång orsaka en allvarlig social störningssituation, om ärendet inte är tillräckligt förberett i förväg? Ett annat betydelsefullt resultat är att de direkta effekterna av klimatförändringen i fråga om försörjningsberedskap är mycket små i Finland jämfört med i resten av världen. Även om klimatet i Finland redan har förändrats avsevärt och kommer att fortsätta förändras i framtiden, tycks de största effekterna av försörjningsberedskapen återspeglas på annat håll: experterna på Försörjningsberedskapscentralen anser att den värsta situationen är brist på mat, vatten och livsrum i världen, vars effekter även skulle återspeglas i Finland. Bland industrierna upplevs livsmedel och energiförsörjning och logistik som de mest utsatta. Arbetet fokuserade främst på klimatförändringens direkta effekter, det vill säga klimatförändringens effekter på förekomsten av väderfenomen. Arbetet berör dock även indirekta effekter, det vill säga effekter som reflekteras från resten av världen och övergångseffekter som är ett resultat av åtgärder för att minska klimatförändringen, särskilt från den snabba energiomställningen. Serious disruptions and exceptional circumstances for society, that the society tries to prepare for and act in them are at the center of security of supply. Current examples are the COVID pandemic and the ongoing energy crisis for which Finland's security of supply has also been strongly highlighted. Disturbances can also be caused by weather phenomena: in Finland, such examples are windstorms, severe thunderstorms, floods, and droughts, which can, at least in principle, paralyze the society. It is possible to prepare for the impacts of weather phenomena, but the ongoing rapid climate change makes it more complicated. Some of the weather phenomena that cause impacts are fast and violent (e.g. intense thunderstorms) and some occur more slowly (e.g. long heat waves), and climate change affects the phenomena in different ways. In this work, the estimated impacts of climate change on Finland's security of supply were investigated. The starting point was to gain an understanding of which weather phenomena and weather situations are central to security of supply and which sectors of security of supply are the most vulnerable. The work constituted of workshops and expert interviews organized with the National Emergency Supply Agency. In addition to the interviews, the work covered past significant weather situations in Finland that are known to have had significant societal impacts. Information was also extracted from recent literature, especially regarding the vulnerabilities and adaptability of different sectors in Finland. Estimates of the climate change impacts on the identified phenomena were combined with the collected information, resulting in a first understanding of how climate change affects Finland's security of supply. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the impacts of climate change on security of supply are quite complex, especially due to the wide spectrum of weather phenomena and their different impact mechanisms. In addition, the matter becomes more complicated by the fact that there is no clear distinction of what weather phenomenon actually is critical to security of supply and what is not. For example, could the increasing adverse impacts on health care due to the increasingly common heat conditions reach a serious societal disturbance situation at some point, if it is not sufficiently prepared in advance? Another key result is that in terms of security of supply, the direct effects of climate change are very small in Finland compared to many other countries. Although the climate in Finland has already changed considerably and will continue to change in the future, the biggest impacts to security of supply seem to be reflected from elsewhere: the experts of the National Emergency Supply Agency consider the worst situation to be a lack of food, water and habitable living environment in the world, which would also be reflected to Finland. Among the sectors, food/water and energy supply and logistics are perceived as the most vulnerable. The work mainly focused on the direct effects of climate change, i.e. the effects of climate change on the occurrence of various weather phenomena. However, the work also considers to some extent indirect effects, i.e. those reflected from other parts of the world, and transitional effects that result from climate change mitigation measures, especially from the rapid energy transition.

1. The thermal sensitivity of early life stages can play a fundamental role in constraining species distributions. For egg-laying ectotherms, cool temperatures often extend development time and exacerbate developmental energy cost. Despite these costs, egg laying is still observed at high latitudes and altitudes. How embryos overcome the developmental constraints posed by cool climates is crucial knowledge for explaining the persistence of oviparous species in such environments and for understanding thermal adaptation more broadly. 2. Here, we studied maternal investment and embryo energy use and allocation in wall lizards spanning altitudinal regions, as potential mechanisms that enable successful development to hatching in cool climates. Specifically, we compared population-level differences in (1) investment from mothers (egg mass, embryo retention and thyroid yolk hormone concentration), (2) embryo energy expenditure during development, and (3) embryo energy allocation from yolk towards tissue. 3. We found evidence that energy expenditure was greater under cool compared with warm incubation temperatures. Females from relatively cool regions did not compensate for this energetic cost of development by producing larger eggs or increasing thyroid hormone concentration in yolk. Instead, embryos from the high-altitude region used less energy to complete development, that is, they developed faster without a concomitant increase in metabolic rate, compared with those from the low-altitude region. Embryos from high altitudes also allocated relatively more energy towards tissue production, hatching with lower residual yolk: tissue ratios than low-altitude region embryos. 4. These results are consistent with local adaptation to cool climate and suggest that this is underpinned by mechanisms that regulate embryonic utilisation of yolk reserves and its allocation towards tissue, rather than shifts in maternal investment of yolk content or composition. peerReviewed

The world is becoming more dependent on a bioresource-based economy to end its reliance on fossil fuels. In Nordic countries, especially in Finland, the increase in biomass production from peatland forestry shows an indication of increased nutrient and suspended solids (SS) exports from the water systems. The focus of the thesis was to develop new approaches for better evaluating the changing use of bioresources like water resources, considering different socioeconomic conditions and examining the alternative pathways, known as the Nordic Bioeconomy Pathways (NBPs). This thesis includes four sequential studies to understand the historical and future consequences on hydrology and water quality in the peatland forestry-dominated Simojoki catchment (3160 km2) in northern Finland. In the first study, a new algorithm was developed using aerial photos and LIDAR data to identify and generate time series of the ditch networks in different landscapes. The export coefficients used in the second study, with landuses analysed from Landsat and the regional database, provided a clear picture of nutrient loads and SS exports over decades at multiple locations in the catchment. In the third study, integrating the ditch networks in the SWAT hydrological model to identify and calibrate peatland forestry parameters predicted a higher specific loading of nutrients in a clear-cut forest in peat soil than in clear-cut mineral soil. Finally, stakeholders’ opinions, the Finnish forest dynamics model MELA and climate-imposing emission pathways were used to build multiple NBP scenarios for different land system management attributes. The analysis provided an annual nutrient decrease for sustainability and business-as-usual scenario, whereas, for others, they systematically increased. The results also showed lower variability when climate data was integrated with management forestry attributes. Overall, the new tools and modelling approaches of the thesis can provide direction to focus on the impacts of peatland forestry for the efficient use of bioresources, especially in identifying the spatial zones of excessive loading in a catchment compared to the current condition. Tiivistelmä Maailmasta on tulossa entistä riippuvaisempi biopohjaisista resursseista fossiilisten polttoaineiden käytön vähentyessä. Pohjoismaissa lisääntynyt biomassan hyödyntäminen turvemetsäalueilta voi aiheuttaa lisäkuormitusta vesistöihin. Tässä väitöstyössä on tutkittu vaihtoehtoisia biotalouden skenaarioita (Nordic bioeconomy pathways, NBP) joissa tarkastellaan biopohjaisten resurssien käytön mahdollisuuksia. Kokonaisuus muodostui neljästä tutkimuksesta, joiden tavoitteena oli ymmärtää eri sosioekonomisten skenaarioiden nykyisiä ja tulevia vaikutuksia turvemetsätalousvaltaisella Simojoen valuma-alueella (3160 km2). Ilmakuvia ja LIDAR-dataa käyttävä algoritmi kehitettiin tunnistamaan muutoksia valuma-alueen ojaverkostossa. Toisessa tutkimuksessa maankäyttökohtaiset kuormituskertoimet, Landsat-analyysi ja maankäyttötilastot osoittivat epäjohdonmukaisuuksia ennustettujen ja mitattujen ravinne ja kiintoainepitoisuuksien välillä johtuen hydrologisesta vaihtelusta. Kolmannessa tutkimuksessa ojaverkostoaineisto yhdistettiin osaksi semi-fysikaalispohjaista hydrologista SWAT-mallia, parantamaan valuma-aluetason hydrologista ja ravinnekuormitus mallinnusta. Tulosten perusteella mm. avohakkuista aiheutuva ravinnekuormitus oli korkeampaa turvemaalla kuin mineraalimaalla. Lopuksi kuhunkin skenaarioon liitettiin Simojoen sidosryhmien mielipiteet, metsien käytön suunnittelu MELA-malli, eri emissioskenaarioihin perustuvat ilmastomallinnustulokset sekä maankäytön vaihtoehtoiset toteutusjärjestelyt. Tämän perusteella mallinnusvaihtoehdot “kestävä” ja “business-as-usual” aiheuttivat laskua ravinnekuormissa, kun taas muiden vaihtoehtojen toteutuessa kuormitus lisääntyi. Metsätalouden kasvu ja suojeltujen alueiden vähentyminen aiheuttivat alhaisemman vaihtelevuuden. Kaiken kaikkiaan tutkimukset ovat hyödyllisiä, kun pyritään ymmärtämään metsätalouden alueellisia vaikutuksia, ja etenkin tunnistamaan metsätalousvaltaisilta valuma-alueilta niitä alueita, joilla kuormitusta syntyy voimakkaasti.

In the first season of the television Eco Noir crime series “Fortitude” (2015) the polar bear appears as a sticky object that embodies an ambiguous affective charge as an icon of global warming. This article discusses the ways in which the polar bear evokes viewer affect in the series through two discourses. The first one relates to violence, essentially present in crime narratives, and how the human and nonhuman animal are positioned in relation to global warming, violence and each other. It raises questions of place and belonging in a local and global context and examines how the polar bear is constructed in terms of stranger danger and victimization in relation to human animals and the threat of global warming. The second one targets the ways in which the polar bear is rendered sticky as the object of the human gaze and how this process of human animals looking at photographs of bears both constructs and deconstructs the subject-object relation, hierarchy and agency. Methodologically, the article draws on “close looking” and the main theoretical starting points are ecocriticism and affect theory. The article argues that the representation of the polar bear contributes in essential ways to the socially and environmentally critical emphasis essential in contemporary crime narratives including “Fortitude”: the distracting and emotionally charged representation of the polar bear evokes ambiguous affective responses in viewers. Thus, as the article further argues, a representation of this kind is capable of—and liable to— inducing a heightened awareness of the present environmental crisis than a more straightforward, less affectively charged representation., En la primera temporada de “Fortitude” (2015), la serie policial de televisión Eco Noir, el oso polar aparece como una figura recurrente que representa una carga afectiva ambigua como símbolo del calentamiento global. Este artículo analiza las formas en las que el oso polar provoca el afecto del espectador en la serie, a través de dos discursos. El primero se identifica con la violencia, fundamentalmente presente en las narrativas del crimen, y en cómo se posicionan los seres humanos y no humanos en relación con el calentamiento global, la violencia y entre sí. Suscita cuestiones de lugar y pertenencia en un contexto local y global e identifica cómo se construye la figura del oso polar en términos del peligro del extraño y la victimización en relación con la humanidad y con la amenaza del calentamiento global. El segundo se centra en las formas en las que el oso polar se vuelve complicado como objeto de la mirada humana y cómo este proceso de personas que miran fotos artísticas de osos construye y deconstruye la relación sujeto-objeto, la jerarquía y la agecialidad. Metodológicamente, el artículo se basa en un “análisis detallado” y los principales puntos de partida teóricos son la ecocrítica y la teoría del afecto. El artículo sostiene que la representación del oso polar contribuye de manera esencial al énfasis social y medioambientalmente crítico, esencial en las narrativas criminales contemporáneas, incluida “Fortitude”: la representación del oso polar que distrae y con carga emocional evoca respuestas afectivas ambiguas en los espectadores. Por lo tanto, como se argumenta además en el artículo, una representación de este tipo es capaz —y propensa a— inducir una mayor conciencia de la actual crisis ambiental que una representación más directa y con menos carga afectiva.

A tighter integration of modeling frameworks for climate and air quality is urgently needed to assess the impacts of clean air policies on future Arctic and global climate. We combined a new model emulator and comprehensive emissions scenarios for air pollutants and greenhouse gases to assess climate and human health co-benefits of emissions reductions. Fossil fuel use is projected to rapidly decline in an increasingly sustainable world, resulting in far-reaching air quality benefits. Despite human health benefits, reductions in sulfur emissions in a more sustainable world could enhance Arctic warming by 0.8 degrees C in 2050 relative to the 1995-2014, thereby offsetting climate benefits of greenhouse gas reductions. Targeted and technically feasible emissions reduction opportunities exist for achieving simultaneous climate and human health co-benefits. It would be particularly beneficial to unlock a newly identified mitigation potential for carbon particulate matter, yielding Arctic climate benefits equivalent to those from carbon dioxide reductions by 2050. Reduction in key air pollutants, especially particulate carbon, can help mitigate Arctic warming with associated benefits for global climate and human health, according to Earth system model simulations under future emissions scenarios.

For short-lived climate forcers such as black carbon (BC), the atmospheric concentrations, radiative forcing (RF), and, ultimately, the subsequent effects on climate, depend on the location and timing of the emissions. Here, we employ the NorESM1-Happi version of the Norwegian Earth System Model to systematically study how the RF associated with BC emissions depends on the latitude, longitude, and seasonality of the emissions. The model aerosol scheme is run in an offline mode to allow for an essentially noise-free evaluation of the RF associated with even minor changes in emissions. A total of 960 experiments were run to evaluate the BC direct RF (dirRF) and the RF associated with BC in snow/ice (snowRF) for emissions in 192 latitude–longitude boxes covering the globe, both for seasonally uniform emissions and for emissions in each of the four seasons separately. We also calculate a rough estimate of the global temperature response to regional emissions and provide a Fortran-based tool to facilitate the further use of our results. Overall, the results demonstrate that the BC RFs strongly depend on the latitude, longitude, and season of the emissions. In particular, the global mean dirRF normalized by emissions (direct specific forcing; dirSF) depends much more strongly on the emission location than suggested by previous studies that have considered emissions from continental-/subcontinental-scale regions. Even for seasonally uniform emissions, dirSF varies by more than a factor of 10, depending on the emission location. These variations correlate strongly with BC lifetime, which varies from less than 2 to 11 d. BC dirSF is largest for emissions in tropical convective regions and in subtropical and midlatitude continents in summer, both due to the abundant solar radiation and strong convective transport, which increases BC lifetime and the amount of BC above clouds. The dirSF is also relatively large for emissions in high-albedo, high-latitude regions such as Antarctica and Greenland. The dependence of snow specific forcing (snowSF) on the emission location is even larger. While BC emissions originating from most low-latitude regions result in negligible snowSF, the maxima of snowSF for emissions in polar regions greatly exceed the largest values of dirSF for low-latitude emissions. The large magnitude of snowSF for high-latitude BC emissions suggests that, for a given mass of BC emitted, the climate impacts are also largest for high-latitude emissions. The additivity of the RFs resulting from BC emissions in different regions and seasons is also investigated. It is found that dirRF is almost additive for current-day emissions, so that summing the RFs computed for individual regions/seasons without considering BC emissions from elsewhere overestimates dirRF by less than 10 %. For snowRF, the overestimate is somewhat larger, at ∼ 20 %.

A moderate raise in temperature was suggested to enhance the impact of parasites on aquatic ecosystems. Under higher temperatures, poikilothermic animals (e.g. fish) increase their activity, which can result in a more frequent encounter with parasites. However, temperature increase may also trigger processes counteracting an increased risk of parasitic infections. Thus, the removal of free‐living stages of parasites by filter‐feeding organisms can increase with temperature and potentially mitigate disease risk in ecosystems under climate change. We aimed to study whether an increased infection transmission under higher temperatures can be compensated by the increased removal of parasitic larvae by aquatic predators. In addition, we planned to reveal the behavioral mechanism underlying the more successful transmission of the parasite at higher temperatures. We studied experimentally how temperature, the behavior of fish hosts (rainbow trout), and the presence of filter‐feeding mussels in the environment influence the infection success of trematode larvae Diplostomum pseudospathaceum cercariae. We found that temperature raise increased while the presence of filter‐feeding mussels in the environment decreased infection intensities in fish. However, the effect of mussel's presence was constant within the tested range of water temperatures (15–23°C), which suggests that it cannot compensate for the observed increased transmission of parasites under temperature raise. Fish activity before the exposure to parasites was a substantial factor affecting the host's vulnerability to infection. However, fish activity only weakly correlated with temperature, therefore, it is unlikely to be the only factor responsible for the increased infection success under warmer conditions. After the exposure, fish activity decreased and did not influence the infection's success. This decrease was temperature‐dependent and more pronounced in more active fish. In general, we showed that the elimination of trematode larvae by filter‐feeders is unlikely to deter the potential effects of global warming on host–parasite interactions in temperate freshwater ecosystems. peerReviewed

Based on the Baltic Earth Assessment Reports of this thematic issue in Earth System Dynamics and recent peer-reviewed literature, current knowledge of the effects of global warming on past and future changes in climate of the Baltic Sea region is summarised and assessed. The study is an update of the Second Assessment of Climate Change (BACC II) published in 2015 and focuses on the atmosphere, land, cryosphere, ocean, sediments, and the terrestrial and marine biosphere. Based on the summaries of the recent knowledge gained in palaeo-, historical, and future regional climate research, we find that the main conclusions from earlier assessments still remain valid. However, new long-term, homogenous observational records, for example, for Scandinavian glacier inventories, sea-level-driven saltwater inflows, so-called Major Baltic Inflows, and phytoplankton species distribution, and new scenario simulations with improved models, for example, for glaciers, lake ice, and marine food web, have become available. In many cases, uncertainties can now be better estimated than before because more models were included in the ensembles, especially for the Baltic Sea. With the help of coupled models, feedbacks between several components of the Earth system have been studied, and multiple driver studies were performed, e.g. projections of the food web that include fisheries, eutrophication, and climate change. New datasets and projections have led to a revised understanding of changes in some variables such as salinity. Furthermore, it has become evident that natural variability, in particular for the ocean on multidecadal timescales, is greater than previously estimated, challenging our ability to detect observed and projected changes in climate. In this context, the first palaeoclimate simulations regionalised for the Baltic Sea region are instructive. Hence, estimated uncertainties for the projections of many variables increased. In addition to the well-known influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation, it was found that also other low-frequency modes of internal variability, such as the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability, have profound effects on the climate of the Baltic Sea region. Challenges were also identified, such as the systematic discrepancy between future cloudiness trends in global and regional models and the difficulty of confidently attributing large observed changes in marine ecosystems to climate change. Finally, we compare our results with other coastal sea assessments, such as the North Sea Region Climate Change Assessment (NOSCCA), and find that the effects of climate change on the Baltic Sea differ from those on the North Sea, since Baltic Sea oceanography and ecosystems are very different from other coastal seas such as the North Sea. While the North Sea dynamics are dominated by tides, the Baltic Sea is characterised by brackish water, a perennial vertical stratification in the southern subbasins, and a seasonal sea ice cover in the northern subbasins.

The quality of lake ice is of uppermost importance for ice safety and under-ice ecology, but its temporal and spatial variability is largely unknown. Here we conducted a coordinated lake ice quality sampling campaign across the Northern Hemisphere during one of the warmest winters since 1880 and show that lake ice during 2020/2021 commonly consisted of unstable white ice, at times contributing up to 100% to the total ice thickness. We observed that white ice increased over the winter season, becoming thickest and constituting the largest proportion of the ice layer towards the end of the ice cover season when fatal winter drownings occur most often and light limits the growth and reproduction of primary producers. We attribute the dominance of white ice before ice-off to air temperatures varying around the freezing point, a condition which occurs more frequently during warmer winters. Thus, under continued global warming, the prevalence of white ice is likely to substantially increase during the critical period before ice-off, for which we adjusted commonly used equations for human ice safety and light transmittance through ice. Under continued global warming, lakes will increasingly be covered by white ice, in particular towards the end of the ice cover season when fatal winter drownings occur most often and light limits the growth and reproduction of primary producers.

Julkaisun sivua 69 on päivitetty 14.4.2022. Tähän raporttiin on koottu yhteen vaikuttavia päästövähennystoimia tutkimuksista sekä seitsemän maakunnan ilmastotiekartoista. Näitä maakuntia ovat Etelä-Karjala, Pirkanmaa, Pohjois-Pohjanmaa, Päijät-Häme, Satakunta, Uusimaa ja Varsinais-Suomi. Raportin mallitiekartoissa korostuu maakunnallisten toimijoiden, kuten maakuntaliittojen, ELY-keskusten ja kehitysorganisaatioiden rooli hiilineutraaliustavoitteiden saavuttamisessa. Resurssit maakuntien ja kuntien ilmastotyöhön ovat rajalliset, joten on tärkeää keskittää resurssit kaikkein vaikuttavimpiin toimiin. Kriittisiä toimia fossiilisten polttoaineiden päästöjen vähentämiseksi ovat energiankäytön pienentäminen ja tehostaminen, vähäpäästöisen energian osuuden merkittävä kasvattaminen sekä lämmityksen, liikenteen ja teollisuusprosessien puhdas sähköistäminen. Maankäyttösektorilla kriittisiä päästövähennystoimia ovat etenkin turvemaapeltojen ja -metsien päästöjen hallinta sekä metsäkadon estäminen. Puhtaan energiantuotannon osalta maakunnallisten toimijoiden tehtäviä ovat muun muassa kaavoitus, lupaprosessien kehittäminen sekä keskeisten toimijoiden yhteistyön, osaamisen ja rahoituksen edistäminen. Liikenteessä kaavoituksella, kestävän liikkumisen ohjelmilla ja pilottihankkeilla vaikutetaan liikenteen päästöihin. Rakennusten päästöjen vähentämiseksi maakuntatason toimijat voivat kannustaa alueen kiinteistönomistajia energiaremontteihin. Maakunnallinen ilmastotyö on jatkuva prosessi, sillä uusia päästöihin vaikuttavia toimintasuunnitelmia ja toimia tehdään jatkuvasti. Ilmastotyön tuloksellisuutta ajatellen on keskeistä, että tiekarttojen päästövähennystoimet etenevät luotettavasti ja nopeasti käytännön toteutukseen. Kriittistä on, että toteuttajaorganisaatioissa on riittävät resurssit tiekarttojen toimeenpanoa varten. Konkreettisilla investoinneilla on alue- ja kuntataloutta vahvistava vaikutus. Maakuntien ilmastotiekartoissa korostuu ilmastonmuutoksen hillintä. Raportissa kiinnitetään huomiota ilmastonmuutoksen hillintä- ja sopeutumistoimien synergioihin. Ilmastonmuutoksen eteneminen aiheuttaa merkittäviä riskejä ihmisille, elinkeinoille ja luonnolle. Nämä riskit voivat haitata kestävän kehityksen tavoitteiden saavuttamista laajemmin. Ilmastonmuutoksen hillintä ja siihen sopeutuminen ovat välttämättömiä maakuntien aluetalouden sekä ihmisten terveyden ja turvallisuuden kannalta. Mallitiekartat kuvaavat ilmastotyön laajuutta ja monialaisia kysymyksiä, joiden parissa hiilineutraalisuustyötä tehdään. Ilmasto-ohjelmien toimeenpanovaiheessa on tärkeää jatkaa osallistavaa työskentelytapaa, jossa maakunnat toteuttavat ilmastotoimia yhteistyössä valtakunnallisten ja paikallisten sidosryhmien kanssa. Raportin mallitiekartoissa on mukana ilmastotyön käytännön seurannan tueksi sopivia mittareita ja asiantuntija-arvioita yksittäisten toimenpidekokonaisuuksien vaikuttavuudesta. Mallitiekartat luovat pohjaa tulokselliselle ilmastotyölle.

Dust particles from high latitudes have a potentially large local, regional, and global significance to climate and the environment as short-lived climate forcers, air pollutants, and nutrient sources. Identifying the locations of local dust sources and their emission, transport, and deposition processes is important for understanding the multiple impacts of high-latitude dust (HLD) on the Earth's systems. Here, we identify, describe, and quantify the source intensity (SI) values, which show the potential of soil surfaces for dust emission scaled to values 0 to 1 concerning globally best productive sources, using the Global Sand and Dust Storms Source Base Map (G-SDS-SBM). This includes 64 HLD sources in our collection for the northern (Alaska, Canada, Denmark, Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, Sweden, and Russia) and southern (Antarctica and Patagonia) high latitudes. Activity from most of these HLD sources shows seasonal character. It is estimated that high-latitude land areas with higher (SI ≥0.5), very high (SI ≥0.7), and the highest potential (SI ≥0.9) for dust emission cover >1 670 000 km2, >560 000 km2, and >240 000 km2, respectively. In the Arctic HLD region (≥60∘ N), land area with SI ≥0.5 is 5.5 % (1 035 059 km2), area with SI ≥0.7 is 2.3 % (440 804 km2), and area with SI ≥0.9 is 1.1 % (208 701 km2). Minimum SI values in the northern HLD region are about 3 orders of magnitude smaller, indicating that the dust sources of this region greatly depend on weather conditions. Our spatial dust source distribution analysis modeling results showed evidence supporting a northern HLD belt, defined as the area north of 50∘ N, with a “transitional HLD-source area” extending at latitudes 50–58∘ N in Eurasia and 50–55∘ N in Canada and a “cold HLD-source area” including areas north of 60∘ N in Eurasia and north of 58∘ N in Canada, with currently “no dust source” area between the HLD and low-latitude dust (LLD) dust belt, except for British Columbia. Using the global atmospheric transport model SILAM, we estimated that 1.0 % of the global dust emission originated from the high-latitude regions. About 57 % of the dust deposition in snow- and ice-covered Arctic regions was from HLD sources. In the southern HLD region, soil surface conditions are favorable for dust emission during the whole year. Climate change can cause a decrease in the duration of snow cover, retreat of glaciers, and an increase in drought, heatwave intensity, and frequency, leading to the increasing frequency of topsoil conditions favorable for dust emission, which increases the probability of dust storms. Our study provides a step forward to improve the representation of HLD in models and to monitor, quantify, and assess the environmental and climate significance of HLD.

Surface active compounds (surfactants) are frequently found in atmospheric aerosols and droplets. As they adsorb to the surfaces of microscopic systems, surfactants can decrease aqueous surface tension and simultaneously deplete the bulk concentration. These processes may influence the activation of aerosols into cloud droplets and investigation of their role in cloud microphysics has been ongoing for decades. In this work, we have used six different models documented in the literature to represent surface activity in Köhler calculations of cloud droplet activation for particles consisting of one of three moderately surface active organics (malonic, succinic or glutaric acid) mixed with ammonium sulfate in varying mass ratios. For each of these organic acids, we find that the models predict comparable activation properties at small organic mass fractions in the dry particles, despite large differences in the predicted degree of bulk-to-surface partitioning. However, differences between the model predictions for the same dry particles regarding both the critical droplet diameters and supersaturations increase with the organic fraction in the particles. Comparison with available experimental data shows that models assuming complete bulk-to-surface partitioning of the moderately surface active component (total depletion of the bulk) do not adequately represent the droplet activation of particles with high organic mass fractions. When reduced droplet surface tension is also considered, these predictions somewhat improve. Models that consider partial bulk-to-surface partitioning of surface active components yield results comparable to experimental supersaturation data, even at high organic mass fractions in the particles, but predictions of the degree of organic bulk–surface partitioning strongly differ. This work highlights the need to use a thermodynamically consistent model framework to treat the surface activity of atmospheric aerosols and for firm experimental validation of model predictions across a wide range of droplet states relevant to the atmosphere.

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella kolmas- ja kuudesluokkalaisten oppilaiden käsityksiä ilmastonmuutoksesta. Ilmastonmuutos on ajankohtainen ilmiö ja esiintyy päivittäin uutisissa ja sosiaalisessa mediassa. Myös lapset törmäävät ilmiöön ympäristössään ja ilmastonmuutosta käsitellään myös koulussa. Aiemmissa tutkimuksissa on lapsilla huomattu olevan ilmastonmuutokseen liittyviä virhekäsityksiä ja ristiriitaisuuksia. Usein myös ratkaisukeinot liittyvät omaan ympäristöön. Ilmastokasvatuksella on todettu olevan tärkeä tehtävä lasten ja nuorten kasvatuksessa. Tutkimus on fenomenografinen, sillä tutkimuskohteena ovat käsitykset. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin yhdeltä kolmasluokalta (n=13) ja yhdeltä kuudesluokalta (n=13) ryhmähaastatteluilla talvella 2021. Aineisto analysoitiin teoriaohjaavan sisällönanalyysin mukaisesti ja aineistosta nousi molemmilla luokkatasoilla neljä teemaa: ilmastonmuutoksen syyt, seuraukset, hillintä ja ilmastonmuutokseen liittyvät tunteet. Kolmasluokkalaisten vastaukset ilmastonmuutoksen syihin, seurauksiin ja hillintään olivat hyvin konkreettisia ja liittyivät vahvasti omaan elämään ja ympäristöön. Käsitteitä tiedettiin jonkun verran, mutta niitä ei osattu juurikaan perustella. Virhekäsityksiä esiintyi niin roskaamiseen kuin ruokaankin liittyen. Tunteissa esiin nousi huoli, suru, pelko, toivo ja ilo. Ilmastonmuutos koettiin negatiivisena asiana, vaikka muutama positiivinen tulevaisuudenkuva käsityksistä löytyikin. Kuudesluokkalaisten ajattelu oli kehittyneempää ilmastonmuutoksen käsityksiin liittyen kuin kolmasluokkalaisilla. He osasivat ajatella oman ympäristön ulkopuolelta ja miettiä globaalisia seurauksia suuremmalta kaavalta. Kuudesluokkalaiset osasivat myös miettiä tulevaisuutta ei näkökulmista ja muodostaa eri skenaarioita tulevaisuuden varalle. Samoja virhekäsityksiä roskaamisesta ja ruuasta esiintyi myös kuudesluokkalaisilla, mutta huomattavasti vähemmän. Kuudesluokkalaisia oli vaikea saada sanoittamaan tunteitaan. Eroja kolmas- ja kuudesluokkalaisten vastauksissa ei ollut niin paljon kuin oletettiin. Tutkimus osoitti ilmastokasvatuksen tärkeäksi, jotta virhekäsityksiä voitaisiin oikaista. Myös tunteiden parempi huomioon ottaminen kouluissa on tärkeää, sillä monella oppilaalla esiintyi huolta tulevaisuudesta.

A realistic representation of the stable atmospheric boundary layer in numerical weather prediction (NWP) and climate models is still a challenge. We study the evolution of a stable boundary layer over snow-covered sea ice in Bothnian Bay during wintertime in 2018. We perform high-resolution model experiments with the Weather Research and Forecasting model in its single-column model configuration and its default mesoscale configuration to assess which physical processes are essential to predict near-surface variables correctly. We evaluate our model runs against the unique observational dataset collected during ISOBAR18, which combines novel, upper-air measurements by an uncrewed aircraft system with wind lidar, sodar, and conventional meteorological mast data. By analysing surface fluxes in the single-column model, we demonstrate how the atmospheric cooling at the ground can be modelled more realistically than in the mesoscale set-up. We show that surface albedo and sea-ice thickness are essential for the surface energy balance in the model, and we demonstrate how the surface fluxes in the mesoscale downscaling with default settings are subject to strong biases. We also show that the ERA5 reanalysis is not capable of representing the observed surface meteorology in the stable atmospheric boundary layer. Our study illustrates the importance of surface albedo and sea-ice thickness for NWP models. Though a seasonal snow albedo is already in use in many NWP settings, the routine inclusion of sea-ice thickness, in particular, would be a great step forward for weather forecasts and regional climate simulations. publishedVersion

Rakentamisen mitoitussäät (RAMI) -hankkeen tavoitteena oli määrittää mitoitusolosuhteet ja käytännöt rakenteiden lämpö- ja kosteusteknisen toiminnan sekä huonetilojen kesäaikaisen lämpötilan ja jäähdytystehontarpeen suunnittelua varten. Hankkeen lähtötietoina toimivat aiemmassa RASMI-hankkeessa määritetyt tuntiaineistot, joita täydennettiin ilmakehästä alaspäin suuntautuvan pitkäaaltosäteilyn osalta. Rakenteiden rakennusfysikaalisen toiminnan tutkimusosiossa valitut uudet mitoitusvuodet Jokioinen 2011 (yleiskriittinen vuosi), Jokioinen 2017 ja Vantaa 2017 sekä näitä vastaavat tulevaisuuden ilmasto-olosuhteiden vuodet kattavat yhdessä kaikki homeen kasvun tarkastelut koko Suomen alueella. Näiden lisäksi erikseen nimettyjä paikkakuntakohtaisia mitoitusvuosia voidaan hyödyntää kosteuden määrän sekä julkisivujen pakkasrasituksen ja betoniterästen korroosion tarkasteluissa. Kuukausitasolla tehtäviä kosteuden kondensoitumisen laskelmia varten mitoitusvuosiksi valittiin paikkakuntakohtaiset vuodet 2009–2010 heinäkuusta kesäkuuhun. Lisäksi tuloksissa on esitetty talvi- ja kesäkautta kuvaavia ulkoilman mitoittavia lämpötila- ja kosteusolosuhteita stationääritilanteiden laskelmia varten. Kiviainespintaisten julkisivujen rasitusolosuhteiden tutkimusosion perusteella ulkoilman hiilidioksidipitoisuuden, lämpötilan ja sademäärien muuttuminen nopeuttaa betonin karbonatisoitumista ja aktiivisen korroosion vaihetta, mutta vaikuttaa vaihtelevasti julkisivujen pakkasrapautumiseen riippuen paikkakunnasta ja julkisivun ilmansuunnasta. Työosion tuloksia hyödynnettiin rakennusfysiikan mitoitusvuosien valinnassa. Rakennusten sisäolosuhteiden ja jäähdytystehontarpeen mitoitusolosuhteisiin keskittyneessä tutkimusosiossa valittiin Suomen neljää säävyöhykettä kuvaaville paikkakunnille (Vantaa (I), Jokioinen (II), Jyväskylä (III) ja Sodankylä (IV)) kutakin vuoden kuukautta kuvaavat jäähdytyksen mitoituspäivät sekä mitoittavat entalpian ja ulkolämpötilan arvot nykyisille ja tulevaisuuden ilmasto-oloille. Matalimmalla ja keskimääräisellä päästöskenaariolla (RCP2.6 ja RCP4.5) ilmastonmuutoksen vaikutus mitoitusolosuhteisiin oli suhteellisen vähäinen, mutta korkeimman päästöskenaarion (RCP8.5) tapauksessa ilmastonmuutoksella alkaa jo olla enemmän vaikutusta jäädytysjärjestelmien mitoitukseen vuoden 2050 jälkeen.

The role of regions and impactful climate actions in achieving a carbon-neutral Finland This report is a collection of effective emission reduction measures from research and the climate roadmaps of seven regions. These regions are South Karelia, Pirkanmaa, North Ostrobothnia, Päijät-Häme, Satakunta, Uusimaa and Southwest Finland. The model roadmaps in this report emphasise the role of regional actors such as regional councils, Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres) and development organisations in achieving carbon neutrality objectives. Resources available for climate work in regions and municipalities are limited, so it is important to focus them on the most effective measures. Critical measures for reducing emissions from fossil fuels include reducing energy consumption and improving energy efficiency, significantly increasing the share of low-emission energy and the clean electrification of heating, transport and industrial processes. In the land use sector, critical emission reduction measures include the management of emissions from peatland fields and forests and the prevention of deforestation, in particular. As for clean energy production, regional actors’ tasks include zoning, developing permit processes and promoting the cooperation, competence and funding of key actors. In transport, emissions are impacted by zoning, sustainable transport programmes and pilot projects. In order to reduce emissions from buildings, regional actors can encourage local property owners to undertake energy renovations. Regional climate work is a continuous process, as new action plans and measures that affect emissions are implemented out constantly. To ensure the effectiveness of climate work, it is essential that the planned emission reduction measures of the roadmaps progress reliably and quickly towards practical implementation. It is crucial that relevant organisations have sufficient resources for implementing the roadmaps. Concrete investments have a positive impact on regional and municipal finances. The regions’ climate roadmaps focus on climate change mitigation. This report draws attention to synergies between climate change mitigation and adaptation measures. The progress of climate change poses significant risks to people, industries, and nature. These risks can hamper the wider achievement of sustainable development goals. Climate change mitigation and adaptation are essential for both re-gional economy as well as human health and safety. The model roadmaps describe the range of climate work and the multidisciplinary issues of carbon neutrality work. In the implementation phase of the climate programmes, it is important to maintain a participatory working method where regions implement climate action in cooperation with national and local stakeholders. The model roadmaps in this report include suitable indicators to support the practical monitoring of climate work and expert assessments of the impacts/effectiveness of individual measures. The model roadmaps lay the foundations for successful climate work.

The climate scenarios that form the basis for current climate risk assessments have no assigned probabilities, and this impedes the analysis of future climate risks. This paper proposes an approach to estimate the probability of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration scenarios used in key climate change modeling experiments. It computes the CO2 emissions compatible with the concentrations prescribed by Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) and CMIP6 experiments. The distribution of these compatible cumulative emissions is interpreted as the likelihood of future emissions given a concentration pathway. Using Bayesian analysis, the probability of each pathway can be estimated from a probabilistic sample of future emissions. The approach is demonstrated with five probabilistic CO2 emission simulation ensembles from four Integrated Assessment Models (IAM), leading to independent estimates of the likelihood of the CO2 concentration of Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) and Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP). Results suggest that SSP5-8.5 is unlikely for the second half of the 21st century, but offer no clear consensus on which of the remaining scenarios is most likely. Estimates of likelihoods of CO2 concentrations associated with RCP and SSP scenarios are affected by sampling errors, differences in emission sources simulated by the IAMs, and a lack of a common experimental framework for IAM simulations. These shortcomings, along with a small IAM ensemble size, limit the applicability of the results presented here. Novel joint IAM and the Earth System Model experiments are needed to deliver actionable probabilistic climate risk assessments.

Australian katastrofaalinen maastopalokausi 2019–2020 aiheutti ennennäkemätöntä tuhoa luonnon monimuotoisuudelle ja kosketti monin tavoin tavallisten australialaisten elämää. ”Mustan kesän” tapahtumista uutisoitiin mittavasti niin maan sisällä kuin globaalisti, ja etenkin palojen syistä levisi sosiaalisen median alustoilla ristiriitaisia väitteitä. Tämä tutkielma käsittelee maastopaloille annettuja merkityksiä australialaisessa verkkokeskustelussa kriittisen diskurssianalyysin keinoin. Aineistona toimivat The Sydney Morning Herald -lehden sekä News.com.au -uutissivuston verkkouutisten lukijakommentit (yhteensä 1038 kommenttia) kriisin keskeltä tammikuun 2020 alusta. Päätavoitteena on selvittää, miten maastopaloja tulkitaan ja millaisia hallitsevia diskursseja kommentoijien argumentaatiosta nousee. Maastopalokeskustelua lähestytään työssä sosiaalisen konstruktionismin ja ekolingvistiikan näkökulmista tunnistaen, että kieli ja hallitsevat diskurssit vaikuttavat ymmärrykseemme luonnosta ja ekologisista kysymyksistä. Maastopalot ovat luonnollinen osa Australian ekosysteemiä, mutta ilmastonmuutos on tutkitusti lisännyt äärimmäisiä sääilmiöitä paloja kiihdyttäen. Kansalaisjournalismilla on puolestaan kasvava vaikutus siihen, miten luonnonkatastrofit kehystetään mediassa. Australia kärsii eturintamassa ilmastonmuutoksen konkreettisista vaikutuksista, joten on oleellista ymmärtää, miten maastopaloista keskustellaan ja kenen ääniä julkisessa keskustelussa kuullaan. Tarkastelemalla miten tapahtumat selitetään ja ketä tai mitä niistä syytetään voi oppia paljon tarkasteltavasta yhteiskunnasta. Valitut tutkimusmetodit ovat laadullisia ja monitieteellisiä. Kommenttipalstoja tutkitaan työhön sovitellussa kriittisessä diskurssianalyysissa kahdella eri tasolla: interdiskursiivisuuden sekä retoriikan kautta. Yhtäältä kommentteja peilataan australialaiseen kulttuurikontekstiin ja laajempaan maastopalodiskurssiin; toisaalta tehdään konkreettisia nostoja kommenteissa toistuvista syytöksistä ja syy-seuraussuhteista. Analyysissä ilmeni, että monet The Sydney Morning Heraldin lukijat perustivat argumentointinsa maastopalojen ja ilmastonmuutoksen väliselle yhteydelle. Erityisesti hallituskoalition ja silloisen pääministeri Scott Morrisonin asenteita Australian ilmastopolitiikkaa ja hiiliteollisuutta kohtaan kritisoitiin kommenteissa. Australialaisia lokeroitiin retoriikan keinoin myös tiedostavaan vähemmistöön ja välinpitämättömään enemmistöön poliittisen suuntautumisen ja ilmastoasenteiden perusteella. News.com.au -sivustolla mielipiteet jakautuivat selkeämmin, mutta huomattava osa kommentoijista loi vastaväitteitä diskurssille, jossa maastopalot kehystettiin ihmisperäisen ilmastonmuutoksen seuraukseksi. Näissä argumenteissa paloja perusteltiin etenkin oletetuilla puutteilla ennaltaehkäisevässä metsänhoidossa. Varsinkin Australian vihreää puoluetta syytettiin paloja ennaltaehkäisevien ja hillitsevien kulotustekniikoiden käytön väitetystä rajoittamisesta. Lisäksi kommenteissa luotiin jakoja niin kaupunkilaisten luonnonsuojelijoiden ja maaseutujen maanomistajien kuin myös ”ilmastoalarmistien” ja ”ilmastodenialistien” välille. Osa kommentoijista syytti paloista myös tuhopolttajia ja retoriikalla Mustan kesän maastopaloja rinnastettiin Australian aiempiin maastopalokatastrofeihin. Tulokset osoittavat, että keskustelijat molemmilla kommenttipalstoilla osallistuivat maastopalojen selittämiseen luoden erilaisia, toisensa poissulkevia tulkintoja tapahtumista. Vuosien 2019–2020 poikkeuksellinen maastopalokausi nähtiin verkkokeskustelussa herätyksenä ilmastokriisin kiireellisyyteen tai viimeisimpänä esimerkkinä maastopaloista väistämättömänä osana Australian luontoa ja kulttuuria. Australia’s catastrophic bushfire season of 2019–2020 wreaked unprecedented havoc on biodiversity and touched the lives of ordinary Australians on many levels. The events of the ‘Black Summer’ were widely covered both by the Australian and global press, and contradicting claims about the causes of the fires spread on social media platforms. This thesis discusses the meanings attributed to bushfires in Australian online discourse by the means of critical discourse analysis. The analysed data consists of the reader responses (a total of 1038 comments) to the online news articles published by The Sydney Morning Herald and News.com.au in the midst of the crisis in early January 2020. The main goal is to discover how the bushfires are construed and what kind of dominant discourses emerge from the argumentation of the commenters. The thesis approaches the bushfire debate from the perspectives of social constructionism and ecolinguistics, acknowledging that language and dominant discourses affect our understanding of nature and ecological issues. Although bushfires are an intrinsic part of the Australian ecosystem, studies show that climate change has increased the number of extreme weather events thus accelerating the fires. Furthermore, participatory journalism has a growing impact on the framing of natural disasters in the media. As Australia is at the forefront of suffering the tangible effects of climate change, it is essential to understand how the bushfires are being discussed and whose voices are being heard in the public debate. Observing how the events are explained and who or what gets blamed for them can reveal much about the observed society. The study employs qualitative and multidisciplinary research methods. The version of critical discourse analysis adapted for the study examines the comments sections on two distinct levels, considering both interdiscursive aspects and rhetorical devices. On the one hand, the comments are analysed as part of the Australian cultural context and the broader bushfire discourse; on the other hand, concrete remarks are made regarding prominent blame patterns and causal relationships. The analysis indicated that many readers of The Sydney Morning Herald based their argumentation on the link between the bushfires and climate change. Especially the attitudes of the Coalition government and the then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Australia’s climate policy and coal industry were criticised in the comments. Australians were also divided by the means of rhetoric into categories of a conscious minority and an ignorant majority based on their political orientation and climate attitudes. On the News.com.au website, opinions were more diverse, but a significant number of commenters challenged the discourse in which the bushfires were framed as a product of anthropogenic climate change. These arguments explained the fires, above all, as the result of deficient preventive forest management. The Australian Green party, in particular, were blamed for the alleged restrictions on hazard reduction burning and backburning efforts. In addition, the comments created juxtapositions between urban-based environmentalists and rural landowners, as well as ‘climate alarmists’ and ‘climate denialists’. Some commenters also blamed arsonists for the fires, and the rhetoric connected and contrasted the Black Summer bushfires to Australia’s preceding bushfire disasters. Results show that the debaters in both comments sections participated in explaining the bushfires, creating different, mutually exclusive interpretations of the events. The unparalleled bushfire season of 2019–2020 served in the online discussion, on the one hand, as a wake-up call for the urgency of the climate crisis, and on the other hand, as the latest example of bushfires as an inevitable part of Australian nature and culture. The comments emphasised the role of political decision-making in mitigating the impacts of the fires either through climate action or fire prevention strategies. The debate showed indications of polarisation and politicisation of the bushfires, and the comments reflected and constructed various, at times distorted, perceptions of the fires that had also received public attention. The Black Summer discourse also intersected in many ways with the wider, global, and Australian, climate discourse, as well as the country’s previous bushfire debates.

The São Francisco River Basin (SFRB) is one of the main watersheds in Brazil, standing out for generating energy and consumption, among other ecosystem services. Hence, it is important to identify hydrological drought events and the anomalous climate patterns associated with dry conditions. The Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) for 12 months was used to identify hydrological drought episodes over SFRB 1979 and 2020. For these episodes, the severity, duration, intensity, and peak were obtained, and SPI-1 was applied for the longest and most severe episode to identify months with wet and dry conditions within the rainy season (Nov–Mar). Anomalous atmospheric and oceanic patterns associated with this episode were also analyzed. The results revealed the longest and most severe hydrological drought episode over the basin occurred between 2012 and 2020. The episode over the Upper portion of the basin lasted 103 months. The results showed a deficit of monthly precipitation up to 250 mm in the southeast and northeast regions of the country during the anomalous dry months identified through SPI-1. The dry conditions observed during the rainy season of this episode were associated with an anomalous high-pressure system acting close to the coast of Southeast Brazil, hindering the formation of precipitating systems.

Both climate communication and place branding are familiar concepts, whose potentials have been recognized. Cities have engaged in communication and climate work for several years, yet studies linking municipal climate action and communication are scarce. We conducted targeted interviews and a broader survey of climate workers and communicators of forerunner municipalities in Finland and found gaps between climate action and communication. Synergies could be achieved if the two functioned in synchronicity rather than separate tasks, as words require actions, but full impacts of actions fall short without communication. Municipalities have progressed on both fronts but are hindered by lacking time and human resources. Results revealed several opportunities of climate communication in amplifying local climate action and strengthening municipal brand image, but many remain underexploited. Sufficient resources and stronger legitimacy are still needed for climate matters to be better integrated into everything the municipality does and communicates.

High Arctic ecosystems and Indigenous livelihoods are tightly linked and exposed to climate change, yet assessing their sensitivity requires a long-term perspective. Here, we assess the vulnerability of the North Water polynya, a unique seaice ecosystem that sustains the world’s northernmost Inuit communities and several keystone Arctic species. We reconstruct mid-to-late Holocene changes in sea ice, marine primary production, and little auk colony dynamics through multi-proxy analysis of marine and lake sediment cores. Our results suggest a productive ecosystem by 4400–4200 cal yrs b2k coincident with the arrival of the first humans in Greenland. Climate forcing during the late Holocene, leading to periods of polynya instability and marine productivity decline, is strikingly coeval with the human abandonment of Greenland from c. 2200–1200 cal yrs b2k. Our long-term perspective highlights the future decline of the North Water ecosystem, due to climate warming and changing sea-ice conditions, as an important climate change risk., The North Water polynya is a unique but vulnerable ecosystem, home to Indigenous people and Arctic keystone species. New palaeoecological records from Greenland suggest human abandonment c. 2200–1200 cal yrs BP occurred during climate-forced polynya instability, foreshadowing future ecosystem declines.

Pro gradu -työssäni tutkin ilmastonmuutosuutisointia. Teen sen tarkastelemalla Amazonin sademetsäpalojen kehystystä vuonna 2019, jolloin aihe nousi pääuutiseksi ympäri maailmaa. Pyrin tutkimukseni avulla selvittämään, miten Helsingin Sanomat kehysti Amazonin sademetsäpaloja vuonna 2019 ja miten uutisointi muuttui vuoden aikana. Työssäni menetelmänä käytän kehysanalyysia. Mediatutkimuksessa vakiintuneen kehysanalyysin avulla sisällöistä pyritään löytämään erilaisia kehyksiä, jotka määrittelevät tulokulmaa uutisoitavaan aiheeseen. Nojaan analyysissani Robert Entmanin esittämiin kehyksen toimintoihin, joita ovat ongelmien määrittely, syiden määrittely, moraalisten tuomioiden tekeminen ja korjaavien keinojen ehdottaminen. Pyrin löytämään teksteistä metaforia, asiasanoja, konsepteja ja symboleja, jotka tukevat jonkin tietyn kehyksen muodostumista. Lisäksi hyödynnän Anthony Downsin ympäristöuutisoinnin huomiosykliteoriaa. Downsin teoriassa esitellään viisi syklin vaihetta, joiden läpi ympäristöongelmat usein kulkevat. Aineistoni koostui Helsingin Sanomien Amazonin sademetsäpaloja vuonna 2019 käsitelleistä artikkeleista. Työssäni tutkin ainoastaan verkossa julkaistuja juttuja. Analysoinnissa keskityin tekstien tarkasteluun. Tarkastelin rajatusti myös kuvia, videoita ja graafeja, koska aiemman tutkimuksen mukaan visuaalisuutta on tutkittu huomattavasti vähemmän kuin tekstejä. Analyysini perusteella havaitsin aineistossani neljä kehystä: ilmastonmuutoksen, hallinnon, maankäytön ja länsimaiden kehykset. Aineiston hallitseva kehys oli ilmastonmuutoksen kehys, sillä se esiintyi lähes kaikissa artikkeleissa. Myös hallinnon kehys oli vahva, ja se esiintyi lähes yhtä usein kuin ilmastonmuutoksen kehys. Tutkimukseni perusteella Helsingin Sanomat kehysti aihetta vahvasti ongelman ja syiden määrittelyn kautta. Nämä toiminnot hallitsivat kolmea ensimmäistä kehystä. Ongelmana nähtiin ennen kaikkea ilmastonmuutoksen kiihtyminen. Syyllisiksi puolestaan esitettiin Brasilian presidentti ja hallinto. Ratkaisujen esittäminen jäi vähäiseksi, ja konkreettiset ratkaisut keskittyivät vain länsimaiden kehykseen. Uutisointi tutkimusajanjaksolta olikin melko yksipuolista esitettyjen näkökulmien suhteen. Analyysini perusteella Helsingin Sanomien sademetsäpalouutisointi noudatti ympäristöuutisoinnin huomiosykliteoriaa. Alkuvuoden alhainen uutismäärä vaihtui runsaaseen kirjoitteluun elokuussa, kun aihe nousi uutisotsikoihin. Muutaman viikon jälkeen uutisointi alkoi hiipua, minkä jälkeen se vakiintui alhaiselle tasolle. Tämän perusteella voin todeta, että uutisointi muuttui vuoden 2019 aikana huomattavasti. Amazonin sademetsäpalouutisointi näytti pitkälti noudattavan perinteisen ympäristöuutisoinnin käytäntöjä, joten työni tulokset ovat luonnollista jatkumoa aiemmalle tutkimukselle. Tapausta tarkastelemalla tuotin tuoretta tietoa ilmastouutisoinnin nykytilasta.

Highlights • New empirical studies are repeatedly demonstrating the importance of rare species. • However, very little is still known about species rarity in the aquatic realm. • Continental maps suggest variable latitudinal trends in freshwater plants. • Human footprint, past and present-day climates predict rarity hotspots. • Current centers of freshwater plant rarity might shrink within a century. Patterns of species rarity have long fascinated ecologists, yet most of what we know about the natural world stems from studies of common species. A large proportion of freshwater plant species has small range sizes and are therefore considered rare. However, little is known about the mechanisms and geographical distribution of rarity in the aquatic realm and to what extent diversity of rare species in freshwater plants follows their terrestrial counterparts. Here, we present the first in–depth analysis of geographical patterns, potential deterministic ecogeographical factors and projected scenarios of freshwater vascular plant rarity using 50 × 50 km grid cells across Europe (41°N–71°N) and North America (25°N–78°N). Our results suggest that diversity of rare species shows different patterns in relation to latitude on the two continents, and that hotspots of rarity concentrate in a relatively small proportion of the European and North American land surface, especially in mountainous as well as in climatically rare and stable areas. Interestingly, we found no differences among alternative rarity definitions and measures when delineating areas with notably high diversity of rare species. Our findings also indicate that few variables, namely a combination of current climate, Late Quaternary climate–change velocity and human footprint, are able to accurately predict the location of continental centers of rare species diversity. However, these relationships are not geographically homogeneous, and the underlying factors likely act synergistically. Perhaps more importantly, we provide empirical evidence that current centers of rare species diversity are characterized by higher anthropogenic impacts and might shrink disproportionately within this century as the climate changes. Our reported distributional patterns of species rarity align with the known trends in species richness of other freshwater organisms and may help conservation planners make informed decisions mitigating the effects of climate change and other anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity.

High-elevation tropical lakes are excellent sentinels of global change impacts, such as climate warming, land-use change, and atmospheric deposition. These effects are often correlated with temporal and spatial beta diversity patterns, with some local communities contributing more than others, a phenomenon known as local contribution to beta diversity (LCBD) or ecological uniqueness. Microorganisms, such as diatoms, are considered whole-ecosystem indicators, but little is known about their sensitivity and specificity in beta diversity studies mostly because of the lack of large spatial and temporal datasets. To fill this gap, we used a tropical South American diatom database comprising modern (144 lakes) and paleolimnological (6 sediment cores) observations to quantify drivers of spatial and temporal beta diversity and evaluated implications for environmental change and regional biodiversity. We used methods of beta diversity partitioning (replacement and richness components) by determining contributions of local sites to these components (LCBDrepl and LCBDrich), and studied how they are related to environmental, geological, and historical human variables using Generalized Additive Models (GAM). Beta replacement time series were also analyzed with GAM to test whether there is widespread biotic homogenization across the tropical Andes. Modern lake ecological uniqueness was jointly explained by limnological (pH), climatic (mean annual precipitation), and historical human density. Local lake (conductivity) and regional geodiversity variables (terrain ruggedness, soil variability) were inversely correlated to replacement and richness components of LCBD, suggesting that not all lakes contributing to broad-scale diversity are targets for conservation actions. Over millennial time scales, decomposing temporal trends of beta diversity components showed different trajectories of lake diatom diversity as response of environmental change: i) increased hydroclimatic variability (as inferred by decreased temperature seasonality) mediating higher contribution of richness to local beta diversity patterns ca. 1000 years ago in Ecuador Andean lakes and ii) lake-specific temporal beta diversity trends for the last ca. 200 years, indicating that biotic homogenization is not widespread across the tropical Andes. Our approach for unifying diatom ecology, metacommunity, and paleolimnology can facilitate the understanding of future responses of tropical Andean lakes to global change impacts.

Although buildings produce a third of greenhouse gas emissions, it has been suggested that they might be one of the most cost-effective climate change mitigation solutions. Among building materials, wood not only produces fewer emissions according to life-cycle assessment but can also store carbon. This study aims to estimate the carbon storage potential of new European buildings between 2020 and 2040. While studies on this issue exist, they mainly present rough estimations or are based on a small number of case studies. To ensure a reliable estimation, 50 different case buildings were selected and reviewed. The carbon storage per m2 of each case building was calculated and three types of wooden buildings were identified based on their carbon storage capacity. Finally, four European construction scenarios were generated based on the percentage of buildings constructed from wood and the type of wooden buildings. The annual captured CO2 varied between 1 and 55 Mt, which is equivalent to between 1% and 47% of CO2 emissions from the cement industry in Europe. This study finds that the carbon storage capacity of buildings is not significantly influenced by the type of building, the type of wood or the size of the building but rather by the number and the volume of wooden elements used in the structural and non-structural components of the building. It is recommended that policymakers aiming for carbon-neutral construction focus on the number of wooden elements in buildings rather than more general indicators, such as the amount of wood construction, or even detailed indirect indicators, such as building type, wood type or building size. A practical scenario is proposed for use by European decision-makers, and the role of wood in green building certification is discussed.

Constructed wetlands provide cost-efficient nutrient removal, with minimal input of human labor and energy, and their number is globally increasing. However, in northern latitudes, wetlands are rarely utilized, because their nutrient removal efficiency has been questioned due to the cold climate. Here, we studied nutrient retention and nitrogen removal in a boreal constructed wetland (4-ha) receiving treated nitrogen-rich wastewater. On a yearly basis, most of the inorganic nutrients were retained by the wetland. The highest retention efficiency was found during the ice-free period, being 79% for ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N), 71% for nitrate-nitrogen (NO3--N), and 88% for phosphate-phosphorus (PO43--P). Wetland also acted as a buffer zone during the disturbed nitrification process of the wastewater treatment plant. Denitrification varied between 106 and 252 mg N m-2 d-1 during the ice-free period. During the ice-cover period, total gaseous nitrogen removal was 147 mg N m-2 d-1, from which 66% was removed as N2, 28.5% as N2O through denitrification, and 5.5% as N2 through anammox. Nearly 2600 kg N y-1 was estimated to be removed through microbial gaseous N-production which equaled 72% of NO3--N and 60% of TN yearly retention in the wetland. The wetland retained nutrients even in winter, when good oxygen conditions prevailed under ice. The results suggest that constructed wetlands are an efficient option for wastewater nitrogen removal and nutrient retention also in cold climates. acceptedVersion

We use the ECHAM-HAMMOZ aerosol-climate model to assess the effects of black carbon (BC) mitigation measures on Arctic climate. To this end we constructed several mitigation scenarios that implement all currently existing legislation and then implement further reductions of BC in a successively increasing global area, starting from the eight member states of the Arctic Council, expanding to its active observer states, then to all observer states, and finally to the entire globe. These scenarios also account for the reduction of the co-emitted organic carbon (OC) and sulfate (SU). We find that, even though the additional BC emission reductions in the member states of the Arctic Council are small, the resulting reductions in Arctic BC mass burdens can be substantial, especially in the lower troposphere close to the surface. This in turn means that reducing BC emissions only in the Arctic Council member states can reduce BC deposition in the Arctic by about 30 % compared to the current legislation, which is about 60 % of what could be achieved if emissions were reduced globally. Emission reductions further south affect Arctic BC concentrations at higher altitudes and thus only have small additional effects on BC deposition in the Arctic. The direct radiative forcing scales fairly well with the total amount of BC emission reduction, independent of the location of the emission source, with a maximum direct radiative forcing in the Arctic of about −0.4 W m−2 for a global BC emission reduction. On the other hand, the Arctic effective radiative forcing due to the BC emission reductions, which accounts for aerosol–cloud interactions, is small compared to the direct aerosol radiative forcing. This happens because BC- and OC-containing particles can act as cloud condensation nuclei, which affects cloud reflectivity and lifetime and counteracts the direct radiative forcing of BC. Additionally, the effective radiative forcing is accompanied by very large uncertainties that originate from the strong natural variability of meteorology, cloud cover, and surface albedo in the Arctic. We further used the TM5-FASST model to assess the benefits of the aerosol emission reductions for human health. We found that a full implementation in all Arctic Council member and observer states could reduce the annual global number of premature deaths by 329 000 by the year 2030, which amounts to 9 % of the total global premature deaths due to particulate matter.

Ilmastonmuutoksen voimakas eteneminen muuttaa rakennusalan käytänteitä. Ympäristöministeriön julkaiseman vähähiilisen tiekartan mukaan vähähiilisyys on mukana rakentamismääräyksissä 2020-luvun puolivälissä. Tämä on syynä kiinnostuksen kasvuun hiiltä sitovien rakennusmateriaalien käyttöä kohtaan rakentamisessa. Kutterinlastu- ja sahanpurulämmöneristeiden avulla hiiltä pystytään sitomaan rakennuksiin jopa vuosikymmeniksi. Tämän työn tavoitteena oli selvittää laskentatarkasteluilla kutterinlastu- ja sahanpurueristeiden lämpö- ja kosteusteknistä toimintaa nykyisissä ja tulevaisuuden ilmasto-olosuhteissa sekä etsiä diffuusioavoimet rakennusfysikaalisesti toimivat ratkaisut seinä-, yläpohja- ja alapohjarakenteille. Laskentatarkastelut tein Tampereen teknillisen yliopiston kehittämällä rakenteiden kosteusteknisen toiminnan analysointimenetelmällä, jossa laskentatarkastelut seinä-, yläpohja- ja alapohjarakenteille tapahtuvat mitoittavissa nykyisissä ja tulevaisuuden ilmasto-olosuhteissa. Tarkastelun kriittisen arvioinnin kohteena on homeen kasvu, jota arvioidaan Suomalaisen homemallin avulla. Tässä työssä tarkastelualueena homeen kasvulle olivat lämmöneristetilaan liittyvät rakenteet. Näissä rakenteissa homeen kasvu ei saanut ylittää Suomalaisen homemallin homeindeksin arvoa 1. Työn laskentatarkastelut suoritin Delphin 5.9.6 rakennusfysiikkaohjelmalla. Laskentatarkastelujen lähtötietoina käytin Tampereen teknillisen yliopiston aikaisemmissa tutkimuksissa selvitettyjä materiaaliominaisuuksia, rakennusfysikaalisia testivuosia ja ilmakehästä alaspäin suuntautuvan pitkäaaltoisen säteilyn arvoja sekä aikaisemmissa diplomitöissä määritettyjä eri laskentaparametrejä. Laskentatarkasteluissa käytin apuna Tampereen yliopiston Narvi Cluster -laskentapalvelua, jonka avulla laskentatapausten määrä voitiin kasvattaa suureksi, mikä puolestaan auttoi rakennusfysikaalisesti toimivien rakenneratkaisujen selvittämisessä. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastelin ideaalisia rakenteita, joissa ei esiintynyt virheitä. Ilmanvuototapauksia en tässä työssä tarkastellut. Laskentatarkastelut tein pääosin käyttötilatarkasteluina. Tein myös kuivumistarkasteluja eri alkukosteusarvoilla. Laskentatarkastelujeni perusteella mineraalivilla osoittautui soveltuvan hyvin tuulensuojamateriaaliksi purutuotteilla eristetyille rakenteille. Saamani tulokset osoittivat, että mineraalivillatuulensuojalevyn avulla pystyttiin toteuttamaan kuivumiskykyisiä diffuusioavoimia rakenneratkaisuja, jotka toimivat kosteusteknisesti myös tulevaisuuden ilmasto-olosuhteissa. Laskentatarkastelujeni perusteella puukuitutuulensuojalevyllä varustetut purutuotteilla eristetyt rakenteet eivät osoittautuneet kovin kuivumiskykyisiksi. Laskentatarkasteluni osoittivat, että kuivumisongelmat korostuvat erityisesti suuremmilla eristevaipan paksuuksilla. Saamieni tulosten mukaan tuuletustilallisen harjakattoisen yläpohjarakenteen tapauksessa puukuitulevyn kosteuskapasiteetista on kuitenkin hyötyä rakenteen kosteustekniseen toimintaan. Tutkimuksissani saamani tulokset osoittavat, että korkean kosteuskapasiteetin omaavia, kutterinlastulla sekä kutterinlastun ja purunyhdistelmäeristeellä eristettyjä rakenteita voidaan toteuttaa sisäpinnaltaan diffuusioavoimina ja höyrysululla varustettuina rakenteina. Höyrysululla varustetut rakenteet kuitenkin toimivat kosteusteknisesti paremmin, mutta myös kosteusteknisesti hyvin toimivia diffuusioavoimia ratkaisuita löytyi jokaiseen rakennetyyppiin.

Twitteriä pidetään Suomessa elitistisenä sosiaalisen median kanavana ja Twitter-viestintää on Suomessa tutkittu erityisesti politiikkaan liittyen. Aiempaa tutkimusta nuorten ilmastoaktivistien Twitter-viestinnästä Suomessa ei tiettävästi ole. Nuorten ilmastoaktivismi on kansainvälisesti tunnettu ja ajankohtainen ilmiö, joka näkyy myös Suomessa esimerkiksi nuorten järjestämien ilmastolakkojen muodossa. Nuoret ilmastoaktivistit käyttävät yhtenä viestintäkanavana Twitteriä, joka mahdollistaa monipuolisen julkisen vuorovaikutuksessa olemisen eri osapuolten kanssa. Tutkielman tavoitteena oli tutkia, millaista nuorten ilmastoaktivistien Twitter-viestintä on. Aineistoon on kerätty Twitteristä kahdeksan nuoren ilmastoaktivistin lähettämiä tviittejä ja heidän tviitteihinsä tulleita vastauksia Aineisto koostuu 2408 tviitistä, jotka on julkaistu Twitterissä maaliskuussa 2020 ja ne on kerätty manuaalisesti. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan, mitä sisältöjä nuorten ilmastoaktivistien Twitter-viestinnässä on. Lisäksi tutkielmassa tutkitaan nuorten ilmastoaktivistien lähettämien tviittien viestinnällisiä funktioita ja heidän tviitteihinsä tulleiden vastausten viestinnällisiä funktioita. Aineisto analysoitiin laadullisesti ja siinä hyödynnettiin kvantifiointia. Tutkielman avulla saatiin lisätietoa siitä, millaista on nuorten ilmastoaktivistien Twitter-viestintä. Tutkielma tuo tietoa siitä, millaiset sisällöt ovat yleisimpiä nuorten ilmastoaktivistien Twitter-viestinnässä ja siitä, miten nuorten ilmastoaktivistien viesteihin näytetään suhtautuvan heidän tviitteihinsä tulleiden vastausten perusteella. Tutkielman tulosten perusteella selvisi, että rajaa yhteiskunnallisten ja muiden sisältöjen välillä on paikoittain hankala selkeästi erottaa, sillä aiheet limittyvät toisiinsa. Tulosten perusteella selviää, että viihtymiseen liittyvät sisällöt toistuvat useimmiten aineistossa. Huomattava osa tviiteistä liittyi sisällöltään ilmastolakkoihin ja ilmastonmuutokseen. Nuoret ilmastoaktivistit käyttivät Twitteriä eniten itsestä kertomiseen. Nuorten ilmasto-aktivistien tviitteihin vastattiin useimmiten ilmaisemalla samanmielisyyttä tai erimielisyyttä. Toiseksi käytetyin viestinnällinen funktio nuorille tulleissa vastauksissa oli supportiivinen viestintä. Aineistosta erottui selvästi kielteinen ilmastoaktivisteihin kohdistuva kommentointi. Tulosten pohjalta voidaan pohtia, miten nuorten ilmastoaktivistien yhteiskunnalliseen osallistumiseen ja halukkuuteen keskustella Twitterissä vaikuttavat heille osoitetut ilkeät kommentit ja haukkuminen.

Globally, lake surface water temperatures have warmed rapidly relative to air temperatures, but changes in deepwater temperatures and vertical thermal structure are still largely unknown. We have compiled the most comprehensive data set to date of long-term (1970–2009) summertime vertical temperature profiles in lakes across the world to examine trends and drivers of whole-lake vertical thermal structure. We found significant increases in surface water temperatures across lakes at an average rate of + 0.37 °C decade−1, comparable to changes reported previously for other lakes, and similarly consistent trends of increasing water column stability (+ 0.08 kg m−3 decade−1). In contrast, however, deepwater temperature trends showed little change on average (+ 0.06 °C decade−1), but had high variability across lakes, with trends in individual lakes ranging from − 0.68 °C decade−1 to + 0.65 °C decade−1. The variability in deepwater temperature trends was not explained by trends in either surface water temperatures or thermal stability within lakes, and only 8.4% was explained by lake thermal region or local lake characteristics in a random forest analysis. These findings suggest that external drivers beyond our tested lake characteristics are important in explaining long-term trends in thermal structure, such as local to regional climate patterns or additional external anthropogenic influences. Human health risks in dealing with floods in a river basin in South-Western Finland are analysed as an example of scientific and practical challenges in systemic adaptation to climate change and in integrated governance of water resources. The analysis is based on case reports and plans, on literature studies and on conceptual models of risks and risk management. Flood risks in the Northern European study area are aggravated by melt- and storm-water runoff, ice jams and coastal flooding. Flood risk assessment is linked with management plans based on EU directives as applied in the case area. National risk management policies and procedures of increasing scope and depth have been devised for climate change, water resources and overall safety, but an integrated approach to health risks is still largely missing. The same is true of surveys of perceived flood risks, and participatory deliberation and collaborative planning procedures for flood risk management in the case area, specifically for adaptive lake regulation. Health impacts, risks and benefits, socio-economic and systemic risks, and over-arching prevention, adaptation and compensation measures are not fully included. We propose a systematic framework for these extensions. Particular attention needs to be given to health risks due to flooding, e.g. from water contamination, moist buildings, mental stress and infrastructure damage and also from management actions. Uncertainties and ambiguities about risks present continuing challenges. It is concluded that health aspects of flooding are complex and need to be better included in assessment and control, to develop more integrated and adaptive systemic risk governance.

From the perspective of mise-en-scène (staging), and correlatively that of the place and the practice of the metteur-en-scène (theatre director), this artistic research project addresses, examines and experiments on the question of the scenic/scenographic representation of a postnatural world, in climate transition, affected by global warming and moved by abstract data-flows, in a tangled web of storms, information, and algorithms. While lived and conceptual "time", no longer telically given as linear and chronological, is being anthropodecentered and, therefore, diffracted into an open plurality, the Reacclimating the Stage (Skenomorphoses) artistic research project takes the earlier notion of time as a raw material to reexamine, from an eco-scenic and research perspective, in order to transform the theatrical practice of its author and to trigger the latter’s specific contribution to artistic research milieu. By obliquely playing on one hand with memories of theatrical history of scenic internal modi operandi, architecture, and literature, and on the other hand with institutional requirements for doctoral research appearance, the project aims at repositioning the director's practice in a movement of transition of scenic thinking and imaginary through a series of artistic and research experiments, whose enactments and resonant redistribution are poetically at interpretative play in this exposition.
