Larval and transforming stages of smallscale weakfish Cynoscion microlepidotus (Sciaenidae) are described and illustrated based on samples obtained in three different sites along the Brazilian coast: São Marcos Bay (Maranhão state), Camamu Bay (Bahia state), and the Cananéia‐Iguape Estuarine System (São Paulo state). Identification of early stages of C. microlepidotus was based on meristic counts, such as number of myomeres (22), number of fin spines and rays (dorsal XI, 24, anal II, 9 and pectoral 19), morphological features (presence of supraoccipital crest in larvae from flexion to transformation stages, branched anal fin spines) and pigmentation pattern. Early stages of this species are likely to be confused with Carangidae and Scorpaenidae due to the presence of a supraoccipital crest, and with the Sciaenidae species Stellifer rastrifer, Macrodon atricauda, M. ancylodon, and Isopistus parvipinnis due to branched anal fin elements. Aim: Surf zones are crucial nursery habitats for the early life stages of fish species associated with typical coastal ecosystems. However, little is known about the temporal patterns and drivers of fish assemblages in tropical surf zones. This study aimed to assess the (1) main changes in fish community structure throughout 1 year, (2) seasonal dynamic patterns in fish assemblages, and (3) key factors influencing fish assemblages in the tropical surf zones. Location: Gaolong Bay, Wenchang City, Hainan Island, China. Methods: Fish sampling was conducted monthly from June 2021 to May 2022 using a beach seine net. Fish species were identified using both morphological and molecular analyses. Kruskal–Wallis test, analysis of similarity, non‐metric multidimensional scaling analysis, and similarity percentage analysis were used to investigate the temporal fish assemblage patterns. Generalised additive models and canonical correspondence analysis were used to assess how environmental variables influence fish assemblages. Results: We identified 83 fish species, which were grouped into three ecotypes based on their primary habitat: coral reef‐seagrass‐associated species (CS) (35), mangrove‐estuarine‐associated species (ME) (30), and common coastal‐estuarine‐associated species (CE) (18). Most captured individuals were juveniles, and fish abundance and diversity were highest in May. Most CS species were abundant between March and May. ME and most CE species were dominant from June to August, and Mugilidae (CE) was abundant between October and February. Furthermore, surf fish assemblages were substantially influenced by tidal level, water temperature, conductivity, pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. Conclusions: Juvenile fish were abundant in May and fish species with three ecotypes alternate in the surf zones throughout the year. Counter to much current thinking, March maybe the spawn peak of most fish species in the studied area, and we suggest that the fishing ban period could start from March instead of May in the inshore areas of Hainan Island. Cryonotothenioids constitute a subgroup of notothenioid fishes endemic to the Southern Ocean that are specialized to exist in a narrow range of near-freezing temperatures. Due to the challenges of reliably collecting and maintaining larval cryonotothenioids in good condition, most thermal tolerance studies have been limited to adult and juvenile stages. With increasing environmental pressures from climate change in Antarctic ecosystems, it is important to better understand the impacts of a warming environment on larval stages as well. In this study, we determine the critical thermal maxima (CTmax) of cryonotothenioid larvae collected in pelagic net tows during three research cruises near the western Antarctic Peninsula. We sampled larvae of seven species representing three cryonotothenioid families—Nototheniidae, Channichthyidae, and Artedidraconidae. For channichthyid and nototheniid species, CTmax values ranged from 8.6 to 14.9 °C and were positively correlated with body length, suggesting that younger, less motile larvae may be especially susceptible to rapid warming events such as marine heatwaves. To our knowledge, this is the first published test of acute thermal tolerance for any artedidraconid, with CTmax ranging from 13.2 to 17.8 °C, which did not correlate with body length. Of the two artedidraconid species we collected, Neodraco skottsbergi showed remarkable tolerance to warming and was the only species to resume normal swimming following trials. We offer two hypotheses as to why N. skottsbergi has such an elevated thermal tolerance: (1) their unique green coloration serves as camouflage within near-surface phytoplankton blooms, suggesting they occupy an especially warm near-surface niche, and (2) recent insights into their evolutionary history suggest that they are derived from taxa that may have occupied warm tide-pool habitats. Collectively, these results establish N. skottsbergi and larval channichthyids as groups of interest for future physiological studies to gain further insights into the vulnerability of cryonotothenioids to a warming ocean. Antipatharians are conspicuous habitat-forming coral species in shallow, mesophotic and deep sea environments worldwide. Despite their ecological importance, very little is known about their early life stages. In this study, we provide the first detailed description of the embryo and larval biology of the antipatharian coral species Antipathella wollastoni. Embryos were reared in aquaria, allowing observations of the embryo development, embryo and larval survival, as well as larval swimming behavior of the species. After gametes were released into the water column, fertilized oocytes developed into planktotrophic planulae within 48 h. Embryo and larval mortality was high, and median survival was 12–18 h. Larvae were active swimmers, with an average swimming speed of 0.35 ± 0.12 mm s−1. These larval characteristics contradict previous descriptions of antipatharian larvae that report non-feeding, crawling larvae, therefore further studies are imperative to better understand early life processes in this taxonomic order. However, changes in temperature have been shown to influence ecologically relevant behaviours in post-settlement stage fish, and the loss of structural habitat complexity has been related to low recruitment and deleterious behaviours of fish in coastal habitats. Here, we evaluated the individual and interactive effects of prolonged exposure to increasing temperature and changed structural habitat complexity on routine swimming speed and escape response of post-settlement white seabream, Diplodus sargus (Linnaeus, 1758). Fish were reared under different temperatures (control 19 °C; high 22 °C) and structural habitat complexity (low and high) scenarios, in a cross-experimental design, and the routine swimming and escape responses were analyzed after 6 weeks of exposure. Change in temperature did not induce alterations at the behavioural level, but loss of structural habitat complexity increased speed and distance travelled during routine swimming, and responsiveness to a stimulus during the escape response behaviour. The interaction of the two factors did not influence performance. Determining how species are affected by changes in their environment, and the mechanisms that underlie these changes, will be critical to understanding the fish recruitment and populations' fitness and survival. The vulnerability of fish populations to climate change is driven primarily by impacts on their most vulnerable life stages. The earliest life stages may, in many cases, be more thermally sensitive than juvenile and adult fish, as developing embryos cannot behaviourally thermoregulate. We quantified the survivorship of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) embryos under a range of winter thermal regimes. In the laboratory, embryos from four populations with varying amounts of native or hatchery-introgressed ancestry were reared under four simulated winter thermal regimes relevant to the central portion of the species' range: ambient stream temperatures, ambient + 2 °C, ambient with a simulated winter snowmelt event, and ambient followed by an early rise to spring temperatures. Embryo survival (hatching success) differed significantly among populations across all thermal regimes, with the pure native population having the lowest survival. No consistent differences in survivorship across thermal regimes were detected, although native populations exhibited more among-family variability in response to thermal stress. Our study does not align closely with others that found reduced embryo survival under thermal stress, but concurs with observations of substantial intraspecific variation in thermal performance in coldwater fishes. Our results suggest that brook trout embryos may be somewhat resilient in the face of warmer and more variable incubation conditions, but it is likely that their resiliency varies among populations. Future experiments that include more extreme and variable conditions to clarify environmental limits of early life stages of brook trout would be useful for conservation planning. It is an acknowledged theory that a faster growth rate, determined by various environmental drivers, may boost the survival of larval and juvenile fish. In this study we examined the differences in the growth rate of larval and juvenile cod (age 2 – 136 d; SL: 4.1 – 39.2 mm) between the years 2006 and 2014, sub-areas of the Baltic Sea (Bornholm Basin, BB; Słupsk Furrow, SF; Gdansk Basin, GB), and seasons (spring and summer). The average growth rate for all specimens was 0.25 mm/d, with significantly lower values between 2012 and 2014 than between 2006 and 2011. A reduction in zooplankton biomass, especially the large zooplankton fraction, was observed after the 2006–2008 period, which was related to the prevailing temperature conditions in the surface layers. The reduction in zooplankton biomass was accompanied by changes in the structure of zooplankton: less T. longicornis, C. hamatus, and Pseudocalanus spp., and more Acartia spp. The results suggest that the inter-annual differences observed in zooplankton biomass and structure are likely responsible for the observed reduction in the growth rate of cod larvae between 2012 and 2014 compared to the years between 2006 and 2011. The growth rate reduction could be one of the reasons for the decline in the recruitment of eastern Baltic cod between the years 2013 and 2015, after the high recruitment years of the period 2011-2012. Longfin smelt (Spirinchus thaleichthys) is a threatened anadromous fish species that spawns in freshwater to moderately brackish (i.e. 5-10 ppt) reaches of the upper San Francisco Estuary and has declined to ~1% of its pre-1980s abundances. Despite 50+ years of population monitoring, the efficacy of 10+ years of conservation efforts for longfin smelt remain uncertain due to a limited understanding of how the species responds to environmental variation, such as salinity. For example, high mortality during larval stages has prevented culture efforts from closing the life cycle in captivity. Here, we investigated the effects of salinity on longfin smelt yolk-sac larvae. Newly hatched larvae from four single-pair crosses were acutely transferred to and reared at salinities of 0.4, 5, 10, 20 or 32 ppt. We compared whole-body water and sodium ion (Na+) content, notochord length and yolk-sac volume at 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours post-transfer for each salinity treatment. We found that larvae maintained osmotic and ionic balance at 0.4-10 ppt, whereas salinities ˃10 ppt resulted in decreased water and increased whole-body Na+ content. We also found that larvae grew largest and survived the longest when reared at 5 and 10 ppt, respectively, and that yolk resorption stalled at 0.4 ppt. Seriola aureovittata is a long-distance migratory oceanic species belonging to the Carangidae family; it is also known as yellowtail kingfish. It inhabits temperate and subtropical marine waters worldwide. We reached a significant breakthrough in S. aureovittata seedlings production in 2017, enabling current massively juvenile rearing in China, which became a promising candidate for the farming industry, especially for the rapidly growing open ocean aquaculture. However, sudden larvae death caused by environmental changes-related stresses during the early life stages of S. aureovittata leads to great losses. Thus, exploring the physiological mechanism of larvae responses to environmental stresses during seedlings' production under artificial breeding conditions is urgently needed. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) play an important function in the physiological regulation of stress and immune responses in vertebrates, including fish. HSP70 is a member of the HSPs family studied in dozens of fish species, with physiological roles in protein homeostasis, DNA protection, and stress tolerance enhancement, among others. To investigate the possible physiological effects of HSPs on early growth and development of S. aureovittata, we cloned and obtained the full-length cDNA sequence of the hsp70 gene. Furthermore, the structure and spatial and temporal expression patterns of hsp70 during embryonic development, larval and juvenile growth and development of S. aureovittata were determined. The results showed that the full-length cDNA sequence of the hsp70 gene contains 2 332 bp, wherein the 5'-UTR is 187 bp, the ORF is 1 920 bp, and the 3'-UTR is 225 bp in length. A 639 amino acids protein with a molecular weight of 70.1 kDa is encoded by hsp70. The hsp70 spatial expression exhibited a sex dimorphism pattern, with significantly high expression levels in the gill, heart, spleen, and ovary in females, whereas in males, the significantly high expression levels were found in the pituitary, gill, head kidney, and testis. Notably, the highest hsp70 expression levels were observed in the ovary of females and the testis of males. During the S. aureovittata embryonic development, the hsp70 mRNA was detected in fertilized eggs before cleavage, indicating that hsp70 is parentally inherited. Additionally, the hsp70 mRNA could be detected at all stages of embryonic development, wherein the lowest expression levels were observed before the low blastula stage, with a significant increase at the early gastrula stage maintained until the hatching stage. The high levels of hsp70 mRNA were detected in one-day-old larva, which decreased in four-day-old larva, followed by an increase in 15-day-old larva. Remarkably, the hsp70 mRNA level once again decreased in 20-day-old larva, maintaining an average level until 60-day-old juveniles. The results from the present study may provide insights into the origin and physiological function of hsp70 during the early life stages of S. aureovittata.

Background: Lesser sandeel (Ammodytes marinus) is widely distributed in North Sea ecosystems. Sandeel acts as a critical trophic link between zooplankton and top predators (fish, mammals, sea birds). Because they live buried in the sand, sandeel may be directly affected by the rapid expansion of anthropogenic activities linked to their habitat on the sea bottom (e.g., hydrocarbon extraction, offshore renewable energy, and subsea mining). It is, therefore, important to understand the impact of cumulative environmental and anthropogenic stressors on this species. A detailed description of the ontogenetic timeline and developmental staging for this species is lacking limiting the possibilities for comparative developmental studies assessing, e.g., the impact of various environmental stressors. Results: A detailed description of the morphological development of lesser sandeel and their developmental trajectory, obtained through visual observations and microscopic techniques, is presented. Methods for gamete stripping and intensive culture of the early life stages are also provided. Conclusion: This work provides a basis for future research to understand the effect of cumulative environmental and anthropogenic stressors on development in the early life stages of lesser sandeel. Key Findings: Lesser sandeel live buried in the sand and may be affected by the rapid expansion of anthropogenic activities linked to their habitat on the sea bottom. The Bering Sea is a productive large marine ecosystem that supports numerous commercial fisheries, while climate change is introducing rapid warming and freshening, especially in coastal water. The success of early life stages of marine fish can impact adult abundance levels; little is known about how behavioural or physiological plasticity in relation to environmental changes at one stage (e.g. spawning) may affect survival during subsequent stages (e.g. larvae), nor whether trade-offs exist that affect how a species demonstrates such plasticity. We utilized a statistical approach to examine phenological and geographical flexibility in spawning behaviour for four species of groundfish. In situ sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS) associations were also estimated by statistical models for six species of groundfish larvae. All species exhibited greater spawning geography flexibility than phenological flexibility during the egg stage. All larval stages exhibited specific temperature and salinity associations across unique combinations of SST and SSS. These species-specific patterns, in the context of potential climate change impacts, suggest that flexibility in spawning behaviour may not adequately compensate for the presence of unfavourable habitats at the larval stage. Understanding the fitness consequences of thermal history is necessary to predict organismal responses to global warming. This is especially challenging for ectotherms with complex life cycles, where distinct life stages can differ in thermal sensitivity, acclimate to different thermal environments and accrue responses to acclimation within and between generations.Although acclimation is often hypothesized to benefit organisms by helping them (or their offspring) to compensate for negative impacts of environmental change, mixed support for this hypothesis highlights the need to assess alternatives. Assessments that explicitly dissect responses across life stages and generations, however, remain limited.We assess alternative hypotheses of acclimation (none, beneficial, colder‐is‐better and warmer‐is‐better) within and between generations of a marine tubeworm whose vulnerability to warming rests on survival at early planktonic stages (gametes, embryos and larvae). First, we acclimate parents, gametes and embryos to ambient and projected warmer temperatures (17°C and 22°C) factorially by life stage. Next, we rear offspring with differing acclimation histories to the end of larval development at test temperatures from 10°C to 28°C (lower and upper survival limits respectively). Last, we estimate thermal survival curves for development, and compare them among thermal histories.We show that survival curves are most responsive to parental acclimation followed by acclimation at embryogenesis, but are buffered against acclimation at fertilization. Moreover, curves respond independently to acclimation within and between generations, and respond largely as predicted by the warmer‐is‐better hypothesis, despite the semblance of beneficial acclimation after successive doses of warmer temperature.Our study demonstrates the varied nature of thermal acclimation and the importance of considering how responses aggregate across complex life cycles when predicting vulnerability to warming. Early life stages of fish (eggs and larvae) are particularly vulnerable with mortality rates of up to 99% recorded for a large number of species. High mortality rates result from the limited swimming ability of larvae preventing them from escaping sub‐optimal environmental conditions, predators or low prey density areas. In this context, estuaries are key nursery areas for larval and juvenile fish. Estuarine habitats offer environmental conditions favourable to the survival and growth of early stages, through abundant good‐quality prey and protection from predators. A vast literature on larvae occurring in temperate estuaries exists, but an overall perspective is lacking. The occurrence of fish larvae in temperate estuaries depends on several factors. First, the choice of spawning time and location is primordial, as they have evolved to optimise the entry and the retention of larvae in the estuary as well as the conditions experienced by young stages. Secondly, larval growth and survival depend on key environmental factors (e.g. salinity, water temperature, freshwater inputs, turbidity and dissolved oxygen concentration). Knowledge of the larval dynamics in temperate estuaries is scarce for some topics and biased towards some species or geographical areas. The main goal of the present literature review is to synthesise existing knowledge regarding spawning timing and location and larval ecology for fish species occurring in coasts and estuaries, identifying the main patterns, consensus or conflicting hypotheses and highlighting major gaps. Estuaries are important fish nursery areas, yet little is known of how environmental forcing influences estuarine fishes during their early life stages. We analyzed environmental and larval-juvenile fish community data in the upper San Francisco Estuary (SFE) from spring to early summer 1995–2017, to better understand drivers of spatiotemporal community patterns in this highly modified estuary. We evaluated community patterns based on the relative abundance and diversity of native and introduced fish in the SFE and their predominant distribution (pelagic, demersal). The upper SFE experienced a downward trend of freshwater outflow and upward trends of temperature and salinity intrusion. Fish relative abundance only showed long-term downtrends for native and introduced pelagic fish groups. The most influential habitat components for relative abundance and diversity of fish groups were in decreasing order: temperature, salinity, Secchi depth, bottom depth, and zooplankton biomass. Early life stages of native and introduced fishes were generally segregated spatially and temporally, with native fishes more associated with cooler, saltier, and higher turbidity habitats during early to mid-spring compared to introduced fishes during late spring to early summer. Community ordination showed that environmental (temperature, salinity, outflow, Secchi depth, and zooplankton biomass) and spatiotemporal factors (month and depth), explained nearly 40% of the total variance. Our results suggest that the shorter duration of planktonic and nektonic stages of demersal fish groups results in higher resiliency compared to pelagic fishes. Abundance indices are essential data for the application of stock assessment models to obtain fish abundance estimates. Abundance indices have usually been derived from fishery-dependent data, yet the increase in fisheries-independent surveys is now offering new opportunities for these calculations. In this study, we explored the usefulness of ichthyoplankton indices derived from scientific surveys in estimating spawning biomass. In addition, we also investigated whether the strength of the year–class of the commercial cohort of Atlantic hake, as a determinant, could be defined at an early life stage. We used samples collected during the triennial mackerel and horse mackerel egg surveys (MEGS), which cover the hake spawning area in the Bay of Biscay. The biomass indices were determined as the abundance of eggs in the early development stage (stage 1) when transformed into egg production (EP) from 1995 to 2019 in the months of March and April—which is considered a period of high spawning activity for hake in this area. Additionally, we built a metric for larval abundance and converted larval length into age. This was in addition to constructing a pre-recruit year-class index (YCI) while using the EVHOE bottom trawl abundance database for hake for the period of 1997 to 2016. The results of regression analysis of egg production and spawning stock biomass indicate that both parameters are significantly correlated (r = 0.76). By connecting the abundance of eggs and larvae in the adjoining stages, we are able to identify two periods of high mortality associated with the transition from "yolk-sac-first" to "feeding larvae" and "late larvae-YCI10", but we were unable to discover when the strength of the recruitment year–class is determined. Glyphosate levels and the transfer of glyphosate across trophic levels have rarely been studied in zooplankton. The food preferences of zebrafish during the first-feeding stage (which is critical for the survival of organisms), were analyzed because of the requirement for live food. Larval survival begins to be affected when glyphosate intake exceeds 0.3666 µg/larvae/day, in the case that only the food is contaminated; if the medium is also contaminated, the effects on survival start from 0.2456 µg/larvae/day. It was shown that glyphosate was more likely to be incorporated through the medium than through the food (zooplankton), which supports the results of previous studies that have ruled out the potential for biomagnification. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of glyphosate was determined using an ELISA tests specific to measure glyphosate in the fish D. rerio, the rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and Lecane papuana, and the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia. The experimental design consisted in exposing seven zebrafish adults per replica (four replicates) in three treatments 1, 5, and 10 mg/L of glyphosate for 96 h to obtain bioconcentration factors in the gills, liver, and muscle. These concentrations were selected as potential glyphosate concentrations right after application as double highest reported concentration. Glyphosate levels in zooplankton can represent up to 6.26% of the total weight of rotifers (BFC = 60.35) and in zebrafish adult organs were less than 8 µg/mg of tissue (BCF values < 6). Although glyphosate does not biomagnify, our results suggest that glyphosate affected the dynamics between zooplankton and zebrafish larvae, diminishing survival and feeding rates, given that zooplankton species bioconcentrate glyphosate in large quantities. The BCF values found in this contribution are higher than expected. Glyphosate exposure affected energy metabolism and feeding behavior of zebrafish larvae, which presented high mortality rates at environmentally relevant concentrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global changes in precipitation patterns have increased the frequency and duration of flooding events. Freshwater inflows into estuaries reduce salinity levels and increase nutrient inputs, which can lead to eutrophication and impaired water quality. Oysters are important ecosystem engineers in coastal environments that are vulnerable to co‐occurring environmental stressors associated with freshwater flooding events. Successful recruitment is necessary to maintain adult oyster populations, but early life stage responses to multiple stressors are not well understood. Flood‐associated stressor conditions were observed near oyster habitats at multiple locations across the northern Gulf of Mexico during peak recruitment months in the spring and summer of 2021. In the laboratory, we examined the interactive effects of acidification, hypoxia, and low salinity on larval and juvenile life stages of the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) to better understand the impact of flooding events on oyster development and survival. Salinity stress in isolation reduced larval growth and settlement, and decreased survival and growth at the juvenile stage. Hypoxia was more stressful to oyster larvae than to juveniles, whereas low pH had negative effects on juvenile growth. As an emerging pollutant frequently detected in aquatic ecosystems, the toxicity of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-quinone) on fish has been confirmed, but insight into the mechanisms underlying those adverse effects is still limited. Thus, we exposed zebrafish embryos to 6PPD-quinone at 0, 0.25, 2.5, and 25 μg/L until 120 h post-fertilization (hpf), and investigated the variations in their development, behavior, monoamine neurotransmitter levels, and transcriptional profile. Exposure to 6PPD-quinone notably elevated the heart rate of zebrafish at 48 hpf (at 2.5 and 25 μg/L) and 72 hpf (at 0.25, 2.5, and 25 μg/L). In the dark-light transition test, the locomotor activity of zebrafish larvae exposed to 6PPD-quinone significantly increased, especially in the dark periods. Exposure to 6PPD-quinone also altered the dopamine level and its turnover in zebrafish, which exhibited significant correlations to their locomotor activity. RNA sequencing identified 394 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), most of which have the molecular function of binding and catalytic activity. Five DEGs were predicted as the key driver genes in the protein-protein interaction networks associated with circadian rhythm (i.e., npas2), protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum (i.e., hsp90b1 and pdia4), and estrogen signaling pathway (i.e., hsp90aa1.1 and hsp90aa1.2). • Method for estimating fish larvae density when spawning is extended over time. • Modeling larval fish growth and survival for multiple cohorts. • Survey based abundance estimation of age 0 polar cod (Boreogadus saida) in Kara Sea. We propose a new method for estimating the density and biomass of fish larvae and early juveniles when spawning is extended over time and the egg production in spawning groups varies widely with time. As a proof of concept, the method is applied to catch data for age–0 polar cod (Boreogadus saida), collected by the ichthyoplankton survey in the Kara Sea in 2019. The biomass among different size classes of age–0 fish was calculated based on the selectivity of a Bongo net with 500-μm mesh size. The age of larvae and juveniles in each group and average length at hatch (5.5 mm) were determined used for assessing average growth rate (0.18 mm/day) and hatching date for each age–0 fish assemblage. By fitting the population curve to the samples of age–0 polar cod collected in a small area sequentially over ten days, the instantaneous rate of natural mortality was estimated as ∼ 0.05 day-1. Changes in abundance and biomass over time were modeled by the Baranov's equation and power growth function. The average biomass for the time step of interest was calculated by projecting each cohort abundance to a selected point in time and taking a weighted average of all cohort biomasses. The increasing use of alternative feeds for sustainable aquaculture leads to a reduced selenium content requiring the use of supplements to maintain the antioxidant status of farmed fish. The introduction of tuna by-products in fish feed is attractive for their selenium content, but the presence of mercury limits their use as it may negatively impact fish health. Indeed, selenium and mercury metabolism, in relation to their interaction and biological effects in fish, is far from being fully understood. This study aims to assess the impact of parental and dietary supplementation with selenomethionine and methylmercury on selenium and mercury localisation and concentrations in tissues of 3-week rainbow trout fry. Six diets were used. Broodstock were fed a plant-based diet Bpc (with 0.2 μg g−1 selenium and 0 μg g−1 mercury) or a tuna by-product-based diet Bt (with 4 μg g−1 selenium and basal mercury at 0.2 μg g−1) during 6 months, supplemented or not with 4 μg g−1 of selenomethionine for the plant-based diet Bpo and/or with 2 μg g−1 of methylmercury for diets Bph, Bpho and Bth. Their offspring were fed the plant-based diet Fpc, supplemented or not with the same levels of selenomethionine and methylmercury, until their third week. Mercury and selenium concentrations were determined in fry whole-body by ICP MS and quantitative images of selenium and mercury were produced by LA–ICP MS from fry whole-body thin sections. Dietary supplementation of fry with selenium and/or mercury increased their concentration in all tissues, especially in liver, kidney, muscle and intestine. Parental selenomethionine supplementation had a more pronounced effect on fry selenium levels than tuna by-products diet. Mercury transfer from broodstock to their offspring was weak. Mercury concentrations decreased in the kidney of fry supplemented with both selenium and mercury, which could be related to the presence of selenium. Plants must continuously respond to environmental changes, and a timely question is whether and how populations respond to ongoing global warming and increased drought frequencies and intensities. Plants can either respond through migration or through phenotypic plasticity or their populations can adapt evolutionarily, which encompasses the evolution of trait means and of trait plasticity. One way to detect such evolutionary changes within plant populations is through historical comparisons where plants grown from seeds collected in the past (“ancestors”) are compared to freshly collected seeds from the same populations (“descendants”) in common garden experiments. We used 21- to 26-year-old seeds stored in seed banks for two multi-species experiments that investigated changes in phenotypic traits and their plasticity conferring drought tolerance in early life stages of European plant species. In the first experiment, we used seedlings of four Mediterranean species, ceased watering and recorded their day of mortality. In the second experiment, we studied phenotypic responses to drought in juvenile plants of nine species originating from temperate regions in Europe. In one of four species in the first experiment, descendants survived significantly longer without watering and were smaller than their ancestors. In the second experiment, descendant plants were generally taller under well-watered conditions but smaller under drought than their ancestors, thus showing stronger plasticity. Our historical comparisons suggest that some populations have likely evolved through changes in trait means and plasticity in ways consistent with adaptation to increased drought. Using seed bank material for historical comparisons has several weaknesses, such as unknown sampling protocols or invisible fractions. However, we show how accurately sampled and stored seed bank collections can be used similar to the resurrection approach for investigating rapid evolutionary processes in early life stages of plants under climate change.

Corals are ecosystem engineers whose tree-like structures give three-dimensional complexity to the habitat. Their population dynamics are affected by recruitment and juvenile survival. Therefore, several defense strategies, such as the formation of hard skeletons and/or spicules, have evolved to protect these vulnerable stages. The family Coralliidae, to which “precious corals” belong, represent an exception in the order Scleralcyonacea, as they form hard CaCO3 skeletons and small CaCO3 structures, the sclerites. The skeletogenesis of Corallium species is relatively well documented in adult colonies but remains poorly known in the early stages of the development of new colonies. To shed light on the timing of Corallium rubrum’s early skeleton formation and the role of sclerites, we focused on the first 4-years of life, applying different techniques, from scanning electron microscopy to synchrotron tomography and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Our results show that: 1) the first visible sclerites in the primary polyp appear at least 12 days after larval settlement, which is associated with a high CaCO3 production rate (4.5 ± 2.3 μg of CaCO3 per day). Furthermore, growth rings are visible in the sclerites, showing that fully matured sclerites grow fast, probably in 3 to 4 days. 2) Sclerites are the only biomineral product in the first year of life of C. rubrum’s colonies. 3) The evidence of a consolidated axial skeleton, intended as the inner part of the skeleton characteristic of the adult red coral (the medullary zone, MZ), is recorded for the first time in 2-year-old colonies. 4) The annular zone (AZ) around the medullary zone starts forming not before four years after settlement. Thus, primary polyp builds a deformable armor made of only sclerites during the first year. This shelter provides mechanical protection from abrasion and predation to early settled colonies. After two years, settlers are firmly and mineralogically attached to the substratum, which makes them less vulnerable to predation than younger recruits that are not anchored by the skeleton.

Abstract Global changes in precipitation patterns have increased the frequency and duration of flooding events. Freshwater inflows into estuaries reduce salinity levels and increase nutrient inputs, which can lead to eutrophication and impaired water quality. Oysters are important ecosystem engineers in coastal environments that are vulnerable to co‐occurring environmental stressors associated with freshwater flooding events. Successful recruitment is necessary to maintain adult oyster populations, but early life stage responses to multiple stressors are not well understood. Flood‐associated stressor conditions were observed near oyster habitats at multiple locations across the northern Gulf of Mexico during peak recruitment months in the spring and summer of 2021. In the laboratory, we examined the interactive effects of acidification, hypoxia, and low salinity on larval and juvenile life stages of the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) to better understand the impact of flooding events on oyster development and survival. Salinity stress in isolation reduced larval growth and settlement, and decreased survival and growth at the juvenile stage. Hypoxia was more stressful to oyster larvae than to juveniles, whereas low pH had negative effects on juvenile growth. The increasing oceanic uptake is a direct response to the increasing atmospheric burden of CO2. Oceans are experiencing both physical and biogeochemical changes. This increase in CO2 hosts in oceans promotes changes in pH and seawater chemistry that can modify the speciation of compounds, largely due to dependent element speciation on physicochemical parameters (salinity, pH, and redox potential). So, ocean acidification can trigger enhanced toxicity of illicit drugs to non-target marine organisms due to the combined effects of crack cocaine and low pH (from 8.3 to 7.0 pH values) on the reproduction of the marine mussel Perna perna. Fertilization rate and embryo–larval development were used as endpoints to assess the effects of crack-cocaine concentrations (6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 mg L−1) and its association with pH values variation (8.3, 8.0, 7.5, and 7.0). The IC50 was calculated from the results of an embryo–larval assay in different methods of acidification (CO2 and HCl), which evidenced that HCl treatment was more toxic than CO2 treatment for the same drug concentrations. Bacterial and fungal pathogens in recirculating aquaculture and egg incubation systems can cause elevated mortality and decreased production. Peracetic acid (PAA) is a relatively low‐cost, safe, and effective disinfectant; however, its toxicity to early life stages of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has not been assessed. The 24‐h LC50 value of PAA was determined for three early life stages of Atlantic salmon: eyed eggs, fry (~0.17 g), and fingerlings (~16.3 g). LC50 values were calculated using the Trimmed Spearman‐Karber (TSK) method and Toxicity Relationship Analysis Program (TRAP). TRAP LC50 values for eyed eggs treated for 5 and 10 min were 781.5 and 485.0 mg/L PAA, respectively, while TSK LC50 values for eyed eggs treated for 5 and 10 min were 771.1 and 462.1 mg/L PAA, respectively. TRAP LC50 values for fry and fingerlings were 4.0 and 5.3 mg/L PAA, respectively, while TSK LC50 values for fry and fingerling were 4.1 and 5.3 mg/L PAA, respectively. The no observed effect concentration (NOEC) values for eyed eggs treated for 5 and 10 min were 500 and 300 mg/L PAA, respectively. The toxicity of carbaryl, tebufenpyrad, cypermethrin and permethrin was evaluated in European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax during the embryonic and larval development using six different concentrations per chemical. The order of the toxicity effectiveness was carbaryl > tebufenpyrad > cypermethrin > permethrin. The larvae were more sensitive to all tested chemicals than embryos. The LC50 of carbaryl, tebufenpyrad, cypermethrin and permethrin was determined as 13.88, 43.96, 92 and 142 ppm and 9.27, 25.67, 48.4 and 72.7 ppm in embryo and larvae, respectively. Furthermore, the tested pesticides exhibited teratogenic effects on D. labrax embryo-larval stages. The observed malformations were coagulation, no spherical egg, unhatched egg, pericardial oedemata, yolk oedemata, lordosis, kyphosis, scoliosis, no eye, cranial deformation and body atrophy. Malformations were induced with 0.5 ppm carbaryl, 10 ppm tebufenpyrad and 50 ppm cypermethrin and permethrin; the highest rates of malformation were noted with 16 ppm carbaryl, 160 ppm tebufenpyrad, 400 ppm cypermethrin and 400 ppm permethrin as 34.5%, 28%, 17.5% and 16%, respectively. Elevated CO 2 in aquatic environments causes weak acidification. When exposed to weak acidification, regardless of life stage, most fishes undergo some degree of hypercapnia (elevation of CO 2 in the bloodstream). Hypercapnia negatively affects physiological processes and embryo and larval fish are particularly vulnerable to rises in CO 2 . The aim of our study was to understand if weak acidification induced by elevated CO 2 alters the physiology and behaviour of freshwater Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) embryos and larvae. To test this, we treated Japanese medaka embryos and larvae for 24 h with varying levels of weak acidification (pH 7.1 [∼482 μatm], 6.4 [∼2,122 μatm], 6.1 [∼3,280 μatm], 5.8 [∼5,306 μatm], and 5.7 [∼10,130 μatm]) at two developmental stages (72 hpf and 9 dpf). Following the treatment, heart rate, burst activity (movement within the egg), and survival of embryos were quantified. Swimming activity of hatched larvae was also measured. We observed a statistically significant 2-fold decline in heart rate of embryonic Japanese medaka as pH decreased (P < 0.01). We also found that survival of embryos significantly declined as acidification increased (P < 0.01). Behaviour of larval fish was significantly altered (P < 0.001) but not in a pH dependent manner. Our study suggests that weak acidification can cause negative effects to early life stage physiology and that behaviour can be altered. An understanding of the risks associated with diluted bitumen (dilbit) transport through Pacific salmon habitat necessitates the identification and quantification of hazards posed to early life stages. Sockeye from the embryo to juvenile stage (8 months old) were exposed to four concentrations of the water‐soluble fraction of Cold Lake dilbit (summer blend; concentrations of 0, 13.7, 34.7, and 124.5 μg/L total polycyclic aromatic compounds). Significant mortality (up to 18% over controls) only occurred in the embryo to swim‐up fry stage. Impaired growth was seen in the alevin, swim‐up, and juvenile stages (maximum reduction 15% in mass but not fork length). Reductions in both critical (maximum 24% reductions) and burst (maximum 47% reductions) swimming speed in swim‐up fry and juveniles were seen. Alterations in energy substrate reserves (reductions in soluble protein and glycogen content, elevations in whole‐body lipid and triglyceride levels) at all stages may underlie the effects seen in swimming and growth. Dilbit exposure induced a preexercise physiological stress response that affected the recovery of postexercise biochemistry (cortisol, glycogen, lactate, triglyceride concentrations). The transcript abundance of the cytochrome P450 1A gene (cyp1a) was quantified in alevin head regions (containing the heart) and in the hearts of swim‐up fry and juveniles and showed a concentration‐dependent increase in the expression of cyp1a at all life stages. Climate change combined with anthropogenic stressors (e.g. overfishing, habitat destruction) may have particularly strong effects on threatened populations of coastal invertebrates. The collapse of the population of European lobster (Homarus gammarus) around Helgoland constitutes a good example and prompted a large-scale restocking program. The question arises if recruitment of remaining natural individuals and program-released specimens could be stunted by ongoing climate change. We examined the joint effect of ocean warming and acidification on survival, development, morphology, energy metabolism and enzymatic antioxidant activity of the larval stages of the European lobster. Larvae from four independent hatches were reared from stage I to III under a gradient of 10 seawater temperatures (13–24°C) combined with moderate (∼470 µatm) and elevated (∼1160 µatm) seawater pCO2 treatments. Those treatments correspond to the shared socio-economic pathways (SSP), SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 (i.e. the low and the very high greenhouse gas emissions respectively) projected for 2100 by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Larvae under the elevated pCO2 treatment had not only lower survival rates, but also significantly smaller rostrum length. However, temperature was the main driver of energy demands with increased oxygen consumption rates and elemental C:N ratio towards warmer temperatures, with a reducing effect on development time. Using this large temperature gradient, we provide a more precise insight on the aerobic thermal window trade-offs of lobster larvae and whether exposure to the worst hypercapnia scenario may narrow it. The role of small prey (< 200 µm) in larval marine fish nutrition is largely understudied. Here, we explore the contribution of protozooplankton (PZP 20–200 µm) to larval fish diets, compared to metazoan microzooplankton (MZP 55–200 µm). More specifically, we tested whether the contribution of PZP increased during the low productivity season and decreased as larvae grow. We used North Sea autumn spawning herring (Clupea harengus) as a case study, as it is a key species with high commercial and ecological importance. In autumn and winter, the potential PZP and MZP prey was dominated by cells < 50 µm (mainly Gymnodiniales, Pronoctiluca pelagica,Tripos spp. and Strombidium spp.), while copepod nauplii and copepodites where more abundant in autumn than in winter. Based on their trophic enrichment (∆15 N), larvae preferentially grazed on small MZP < 50 µm rather than PZP both in autumn and winter. Larvae of different body size (range 8–14 mm standard length) fed at the same trophic level but on different prey (similar δ15N but different δ13C). Growth rates (based on RNA/DNA estimates) were similar in autumn and winter, suggesting that growth was not affected by station-specific differences in the composition of the prey field. Our results not only underscore the important role of MZP on larval herring diets both in autumn and wintertime, but also emphasize the limitations of bulk stable isotope analysis. Given the current low recruitment in North Sea herring, these results provide significant information for future monitoring approaches relevant to stock assessment of this species. Several morphometric characters with observing general morphology of laboratory-reared larval and juvenile Puntioplites proctozysron (9–40-day-old, 6.8 to 23.4 mm body length, BL) were observed. All myomeres were observable in day 9 flexion larvae. The body proportions tended to become constant in juveniles except for the body depth and upper jaw length that increased continuously. Dorsal and caudal fin-rays already appeared in day 9 larvae, followed by anal, pelvic and pectoral fins, and overall aggregate fin-ray numbers attained full complements by 13.7 mm BL on day 35. Melanophores were scarce in day 9 larvae except those on head, those appeared on trunk and increased in postflexion larvae > 11.0 mm BL, covering whole trunk above lateral line in juveniles. Spawning habitats of cold-water, European small pelagic fishes have shifted poleward in the last three decades coincident with gradual ocean warming. We predicted present-day, season-specific habitat suitability for spawning by European sardine Sardina pichardus in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean and Black Seas, and projected climate-driven changes in suitable areas from 2050-2099 under the IPCC – RCP 8.5 scenario. Sea surface temperature and distance to the coast had the greater influences in spawning habitats, reflecting the temperature- and coastal-dependent spawning of sardines. Chlorophyll-a was the third most important explanatory variable for spawning in winter to summer. Winds were predominantly important during autumn, whilst sea surface salinity was an important driver during spring and summer. Present-day, “hotspots” for spawning were identified in regions of highly productive, salty waters, where SST was between 6 and 18°C from autumn to spring or 16 and 25°C during summer and favourable winds occurred that would retain eggs and larvae closer to the coast (< 250 km). For future scenarios, forecasts indicate that environmental optima for spawning is projected to be in regions where SST varies between 11°C and 18°C from autumn to spring; and between 18°C and 24°C during summer. However, a negative relationship between phytoplankton productivity and habitat suitability induced by warming is likely to occur in the future. Projections suggest that suitable spawning habitats in all seasons will shift to higher latitudes, with a prominent range expansion along the coast of Norway during winter and autumn (> 83%). The total spawning area, however, was projected to contract in the future during spring (-10.5%) and autumn (-4.1%) due to losses of currently suitable areas along the Atlantic African Coast and Mediterranean Sea. Such regions currently support the greatest sardine stocks but climate-driven warming and decreased plankton productivity are projected to make these areas unsuitable for spawning and likely also for sardine fisheries in future.

Climate change is rapidly modifying marine fish assemblages in the Arctic. As fish eggs and larvae have a narrower thermal tolerance than nonreproductive adults, their response to increasing temperatures is likely one of the main drivers of these changes. In this study, we described ichthyoplankton assemblages in West Greenland between 62 and 73 °N, during summers 2017–2019, and investigated the relationship between sea surface temperature in the spring and summer and the survival of Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida (Lepechin, 1774)) early life stages over the hatching season. Warm years were associated with partial recruitment failures resulting from thermal stress to the eggs and larvae hatched late in the season. Using past environmental conditions, we forecasted an imminent decline in Arctic cod recruitment in the regions of Uummannaq and Disko Bay. Observations from fjords suggested that glacial meltwater could create a subsurface thermal refuge allowing Arctic cod larvae to survive despite very high summer sea surface temperature (ca. 10 °C). As the Greenland ice sheet is melting at an unprecedented speed, the mechanism underlying the “glacial meltwater summer refuge hypothesis” could curb some of the negative effects of ocean warming on the survival of young Arctic cod in West Greenland and other Arctic fjord systems.

• We used the outputs of an oceanographic model and an individual-based model (IBM) to study the impacts of climate on the early life stages of Pacific cod in the eastern Bering Sea. • The IBM produced results that agreed with field observations and the current knowledge of the Pacific cod larval ecology. • We found that a warmer environment accelerates the yolk-sac consumption and might increase starvation during the first days after hatching. • We identified a retention area with favorable environmental conditions for cod larvae in the southeastern Bering Sea. • Our IBM can be used for other gadids in the same region to study the mechanistic impacts of climate on early life stages. The eastern Bering Sea (EBS) is a highly productive ecosystem that supports several important commercial species such as the Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus). Climate variability affects the population dynamics of this stock throughout its life stages, especially early life stages, since they are particularly susceptible to environmental changes. In recent decades, warm and cold stanzas (i.e., 3–5 year periods) have been observed in the EBS, and there is evidence that they can modulate the recruitment of this stock, causing important socioeconomic impacts. Using a mechanistic individual-based model, this study investigates the spatial and temporal variability of growth and survival of Pacific cod's early life stages during 2000–2020. We examined changes by year and over space and compared our results with published literature to validate our model. We found that temperature played a key role in modulating the survival of fish larvae, observing an increase in starvation events in warmer years or locations. Periods or areas with low prey density, especially small-bodied copepods, also contributed to increased starvation. The average temperature in the fish habitat was negatively correlated with recruitment estimates from the stock assessment model. Growth was primarily temperature-driven; however, food-limited growth became more frequent when larvae were smaller during cold years. Spatially, we found that the environmental conditions in the southeastern Bering Sea may favor larval survival but reduce growth, and higher mortality may be persistent on the middle and outer shelf. Our model produces results that agree with previous field studies, and it offers a valuable tool to investigate other ecological questions on the impact of the environment on early life stages of fishes. Forecasts indicate that rising temperatures towards the future and the expansion of dead zones will change environmental suitability for fish early stages. Therefore, we assessed the chronic effects of warming (26 °C), hypoxia (<2–2.5 mg L−1) or their combination on mortality rate, growth, behaviour, energy metabolism and oxidative stress using Atherina presbyter larvae as a model species. There were no differences between the treatments in terms of mortality rate. The combination of warming and hypoxia induced faster loss of body mass (+22.7%). Warming, hypoxia or their combination enhanced boldness (+14.7–25.4%), but decreased exploration (−95%–121%), increased the time in frozen state (+60.6–80.5%) and depleted swimming speed (−45.6–50.5%). Moreover, routine metabolic rate was depleted under hypoxia or under the combination of warming and hypoxia (−56.6 and 57.2%, respectively). Under hypoxia, increased catalase activity (+56.3%) indicates some level of antioxidant defence capacity, although increased DNA damage (+25.2%) has also been observed. Larvae also exhibited a great capacity to maintain the anaerobic metabolism stable in all situations, but the aerobic metabolism is enhanced (+19.3%) when exposed to the combination of both stressors. The integrative approach showed that changes in most target responses can be explained physiologically by oxidative stress responses. Increased oxidative damages (lipid peroxidation and DNA damage) and increased interaction between antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) are associated to increased time in frozen state and decreased swimming activity, growth rates and boldness. Under all stressful situations, larvae reduced energy-consuming behaviours (e.g. depleted exploration and swimming activity) likely to stabilize or compensate for the aerobic and anaerobic metabolisms. Despite being an active small pelagic fish, we concluded that the sensitive larval phase exhibited complex coping strategies to physiologically acclimate under thermal and hypoxic stress via behavioural responses. The purpose of this study was to assess the acute and chronic effects of the macrolide azithromycin (AZI) on the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) early life stages. Azithromycin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic frequently detected in the aquatic environment, despite this few information about its effects on aquatic organisms were reported. Investigations of AZI acute toxicity on D. labrax early life stages were made using six increasing concentrations (0.625, 1.25, 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg/l) during 96 h of exposure. The chronic toxicity was tested at one year old juveniles using two sublethal concentrations (C1 = 0.05 µg/l and C2 = 0.8 µg/l) during 4 and 14 days. Malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities were measured in gill and liver tissues of juveniles. The half lethal concentration (LC50), 96 h value of AZI for the European sea bass was determined as 31 mg/l. Results showed that short-time exposure to 20 mg/l of azithromycin induces 18% and 7.5% of larvae mortality and morphological abnormalities, respectively. Azithromycin provoked oxidative stress, peroxidative damage, and neurotoxicity in juveniles D. labrax. Overall, the CAT and AChE activities decreased in gill and liver tissues, while dissimilarity in response in both organs depending on AZI concentrations and time of exposure was observed in MDA and GST levels. Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is a widely used surfactant that has been detected in various water ecosystems. However, knowledge on the toxicity of CPC to fish remains scarce. Here, we examined the survival, development, behavior, and oxidative stress in the early life stages of zebrafish exposed to CPC (0, 4, 40, 400, and 1200 μg/L) until 120 h post-fertilization (hpf). Results showed that CPC induced significant mortality at 400 and 1200 μg/L, with a 120 h-EC50 value of 175.9 μg/L. CPC significantly decreased the heart rate of embryos (48 hpf; 4–400 μg/L) and larvae (72 hpf; 40 and 400 μg/L). At 120 hpf, CPC exhibited a dual effect on the locomotion activity (decreased at 400 μg/L and increased at 4 and 40 μg/L) and elevated the reactive oxygen species, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione levels in zebrafish larvae at 400 µg/L. In addition, a correlation analysis revealed that CPC-induced oxidative stress might play a critical role in mediating the cardiac and behavioral toxicity of CPC to zebrafish larvae. Our findings suggest that CPC may disturb the fish's development, behavior, and oxidative status at environmentally relevant concentrations, which should not be ignored when assessing its potential risks to aquatic ecosystems. To date, numerous studies have shown negative impacts of CO2-acidified seawater (i.e. ocean acidification, OA) on marine organisms, including calcifying invertebrates and fishes; however, limited research has been conducted on the physiological effects of OA on polar fishes and even less on the impact of OA on early developmental stages of polar fishes. We evaluated aspects of aerobic metabolism and cardiorespiratory physiology of juvenile emerald rockcod, ITALIC! Trematomus bernacchii, an abundant fish in the Ross Sea, Antarctica, to elevated partial pressure of carbon dioxide ( ITALIC! PCO2 ) [420 (ambient), 650 (moderate) and 1050 (high) μatm ITALIC! PCO2 ] over a 1 month period. We examined cardiorespiratory physiology, including heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output and ventilation rate, whole organism metabolism via oxygen consumption rate and sub-organismal aerobic capacity by citrate synthase enzyme activity. Juvenile fish showed an increase in ventilation rate under high ITALIC! PCO2 compared with ambient ITALIC! PCO2 , whereas cardiac performance, oxygen consumption and citrate synthase activity were not significantly affected by elevated ITALIC! PCO2 Acclimation time had a significant effect on ventilation rate, stroke volume, cardiac output and citrate synthase activity, such that all metrics increased over the 4 week exposure period. These results suggest that juvenile emerald rockcod are robust to near-future increases in OA and may have the capacity to adjust for future increases in ITALIC! PCO2  by increasing acid-base compensation through increased ventilation.

Plants must continuously respond to environmental changes, and a timely question is whether and how populations respond to ongoing global warming and increased drought frequencies and intensities. Plants can either respond through migration or through phenotypic plasticity or their populations can adapt evolutionarily, which encompasses the evolution of trait means and of trait plasticity. One way to detect such evolutionary changes within plant populations is through historical comparisons where plants grown from seeds collected in the past ("ancestors") are compared to freshly collected seeds from the same populations ("descendants") in common garden experiments. We used 21- to 26-year-old seeds stored in seed banks for two multi-species experiments that investigated changes in phenotypic traits and their plasticity conferring drought tolerance in early life stages of European plant species. In the first experiment, we used seedlings of four Mediterranean species, ceased watering and recorded their day of mortality. In the second experiment, we studied phenotypic responses to drought in juvenile plants of nine species originating from temperate regions in Europe. In one of four species in the first experiment, descendants survived significantly longer without watering and were smaller than their ancestors. In the second experiment, descendant plants were generally taller under well-watered conditions but smaller under drought than their ancestors, thus showing stronger plasticity. Our historical comparisons suggest that some populations have likely evolved through changes in trait means and plasticity in ways consistent with adaptation to increased drought. Using seed bank material for historical comparisons has several weaknesses, such as unknown sampling protocols or invisible fractions. However, we show how accurately sampled and stored seed bank collections can be used similar to the resurrection approach for investigating rapid evolutionary processes in early life stages of plants under climate change. In this study, we describe the morphological development of laboratory-reared black sharkminnow Labeo chrysophekadion larvae and juveniles. The body lengths (BL) were 3.4 ± 0.1 (mean ± SD) mm just after hatching, reached 7.2 ± 0.6 mm by day 11, 13.6 ± 1.7 mm by day 25 and 18.5 ± 2.2 mm by day 40. The onset of feeding was observed on day 3, and all larvae began feeding by day 5 (ca. 5.3 mm BL). The yolk was completely absorbed by ca. 97 hours (day 3) after hatching and notochord flexion was observed on day 5 (ca. 5.3 mm BL). The second maxillary barbel in flexion larvae with > 6.9 mm BL started developing on day 11 and the first barbel in flexion larvae with > 9.0 mm BL on day 16. The body proportions tended to become constant in the juvenile stage except for the maximum body depth that increased continuously. Fin rays started appearing in caudal fin in flexion larvae > 5.3 mm BL followed by dorsal, anal, pectoral and pelvic fins, and aggregate fin-ray numbers attained full complements in specimens > 14.1 mm BL on day 30. Few melanophores were observed on the body during days 0–2, but increased with growth and covered the entire dorsal body surface during the juvenile stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within this paper, reproduction traits of the Adriatic population European hake, Merluccius merluccius (Linnaeus, 1758), were investigated. Specimens of the target species were monthly collected (N=1173) during 2019 along the eastern Adriatic Sea with commercial bottom trawlers. Overall, European hake total body length varied between 15.5 and 49.5 cm (mean±SD=27.5±5.0 cm) and domination of females was noted in larger length classes (TL>31.0 cm). The sexual ratio of all specimens was m/f=0.64; male prevalence was established over the year, except during the spawning peaks (December, June) when the sex ratio was in favour of the females. According to European hake’s maturity stages, gonad weights, gonadosomatic indexes and histological analysis of the gonad tissues, this species in Adriatic spawn twice in one year; the spawning period was from December to February, while second smaller signs of spawning were observed at the beginning of the summer, in June. 50% of the European hake male and female specimens sexually matured at 20.7 cm and 22.4 cm of total length, respectively. Hatch timing in autumn- spawning stream salmonids is poorly understood in the subarctic region because snow cover prevents direct sampling of cryptic early life stages. Otolith micro- increment analysis was used to infer hatch dates of white- spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis (Pallas) and masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou (Brevoort) in a mainstem- tributary network in northern Japan. Accuracy and precision were validated by ageing hatchery individuals with known hatch date ranges. In July 2018, 93 wild young- of- the- year white- spotted charr and 81 masu salmon were collected and aged. Masu salmon hatched, on average, 24 days earlier (mean = February 8) than white- spotted charr (March 4), and hatch dates spanned a minimum of 2 months for each species. In masu salmon, hatch dates of individuals collected in the mainstem were nearly 3 weeks earlier than those in a tributary. Abundance indices are essential data for the application of stock assessment models to obtain fish abundance estimates. Abundance indices have usually been derived from fishery-dependent data, yet the increase in fisheries-independent surveys is now offering new opportunities for these calculations. In this study, we explored the usefulness of ichthyoplankton indices derived from scientific surveys in estimating spawning biomass. In addition, we also investigated whether the strength of the year–class of the commercial cohort of Atlantic hake, as a determinant, could be defined at an early life stage. We used samples collected during the triennial mackerel and horse mackerel egg surveys (MEGS), which cover the hake spawning area in the Bay of Biscay. The biomass indices were determined as the abundance of eggs in the early development stage (stage 1) when transformed into egg production (EP) from 1995 to 2019 in the months of March and April—which is considered a period of high spawning activity for hake in this area. Additionally, we built a metric for larval abundance and converted larval length into age. This was in addition to constructing a pre-recruit year-class index (YCI) while using the EVHOE bottom trawl abundance database for hake for the period of 1997 to 2016. The results of regression analysis of egg production and spawning stock biomass indicate that both parameters are significantly correlated (r = 0.76). By connecting the abundance of eggs and larvae in the adjoining stages, we are able to identify two periods of high mortality associated with the transition from “yolk-sac-first” to “feeding larvae” and “late larvae-YCI10”, but we were unable to discover when the strength of the recruitment year–class is determined. As such, it appears that for the northern stock of hake, recruitment is established in the late juvenile stages.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been widely used to describe interspecific differences in egg quality of teleost freshwater fish, but potential intraspecific differences are poorly studied. Eggs of many rheophilic cyprinids are covered with adhesive structures such as attaching villi facilitating egg attachment at substrates of spawning grounds with high currents. Recent findings indicate that the egg quality of the rheophilic cyprinid common nase (Chondrostoma nasus L.), a target species of conservation, differs in the adhesiveness between spawning populations, potentially explaining differences in recruitment success. In this study, a SEM image‐based standardized protocol was established to assess egg surface quality of Chondrostoma nasus eggs. Multivariate statistics detected significant differences of egg surface properties among individual females and among three different populations. These differences were mainly attributed to length variability and merging of adhesive villi as well as to coating and filament‐like connections of these structures. The findings of this study highlight the need for further investigations to better understand the relationship of egg surface properties, egg stickiness and hatching success to understand the recruitment ecology and performance of early life stages in freshwater fish. Many personal care products integrate UV-filters, such as 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC), a compound frequently detected in aquatic habitats, including coastal areas. However, the potential effects of 4-MBC to saltwater species have been poorly studied. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to study the effects of 4-MBC exposure on Solea senegalensis during metamorphosis, a sensitive life stage of this flatfish. To achieve this, fish were exposed to 4-MBC (0.2–2.0 mg L-1) for 48 h at the beginning of metamorphosis (13 days after hatching, dah). After this period, the fish were transferred to a clean medium. They were fed and maintained until more than 80% of individuals in the control group completed the metamorphosis (24 dah). Mortality, malformations, and metamorphic progression were studied daily. Growth, behavior, and biochemical markers of neurotransmission (acetylcholinesterase, AChE), oxidative stress (catalase, CAT; lipid peroxidation, LPO), detoxification (glutathione S-transferase, GST), and anaerobic metabolism (lactate dehydrogenase, LDH) were also determined at the end of the experiment. An acceleration of metamorphosis progression was observed during and 2 days after the 4-MBC exposure in all concentrations tested. In addition, reduced length, inhibition of CAT activity, and induction of oxidative damage were observed (lowest observed effect concentration, LOEC = 0.928 mg L−1 4-MBC for length, CAT, and LPO). Short-term exposure to 4-MBC at the onset of metamorphosis affected S. senegalensis at several levels of organization, even after 9 days in a clean medium, including growth and metamorphic progression, suggesting possible long-term adverse effects in this species.
