The study conducted demonstrates the potential of the laser zone melting method to prepare long and well-textured rectangular Bi-2212 bars. The Laser Zone Melting (LZM) offers a convenient technique to obtain textured superconductors in planar geometries within reasonably short processing times.

Abstract

Laser ablation of selected coordination complexes can lead to the production of metal-carbon hybrid materials, whose composition and structure can be tailored by suitably choosing the chemical composition of the irradiated targets. This 'laser chemistry' approach, initially applied by our group to the synthesis of P-containing nanostructured carbon foams (NCFs) from triphenylphosphine-based Au and Cu compounds, is broadened in this study to the production of other metal-NCFs and P-free NCFs. Thus, our results show that P-free coordination compounds and commercial organic precursors can act as efficient carbon source for the growth of NCFs. Physicochemical characterization reveals that NCFs are low-density mesoporous materials with relatively low specific surface areas and thermally stable in air up to around 600 degrees C. Moreover, NCFs disperse well in a variety of solvents and can be successfully chemically processed to enable their handling and provide NCF-containing biocomposite fibers by a wet-chemical spinning process. These promising results may open new and interesting avenues toward the use of NCFs for technological applications.

24. ZIF-8 micromembranes for gas separation prepared on laser-perforated brass supports.

Abstract

ZIF-8 is an imidazolate-based metal-organic framework (MOF). ZIF-8 micromembranes of 20-32 ìm diameter are prepared by synthesizing the MOF on Nd:YAG laser-perforated 75 mm thick brass sheets (63/37 Cu/Zn). The laser irradiation activates the brass support, promoting ZIF-8 growth. A thick and continuous ZIF-8 membrane is crystallized on the laser irradiation outlet side of the support, while the inlet side and the inner surface of the microperforations are also coated with ZIF-8 intergrowth crystals. Laser perforated brass supports are not only cheap, flexible, strong, and easy to handle and to process as membrane materials; they are also chemically compatible with the ZIF-8 composition because of the shared Zn element. The ZIF-8 membranes obtained are characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX, TGA and N[2 ]sorption analysis. Furthermore, the membranes are applied to the separation of equimolar H[2]-CH[4], He-CH[4], CO[2]-CH[4] and O[2]-N[2] mixtures confirming the expected molecular sieving effect due to the MOF microporosity. 26. Fabrication of Metal-on-Glass High-Pitch Adapters Between VLSI Electronics and Semiconductor Sensors by Laser Ablation.

Abstract

High Energy Physics experiments make extensive use of silicon sensors for tracking purposes. The high granularity of the modern detectors makes the connection between the segmented sensor channels and the readout electronics very complex. Furthermore, due to the mismatch between the detector pad pitch and the electronics a direct connection is not possible in most of the cases. A new method for the fabrication of pitch adapters is presented using metal-on-glass technology. In this new method the high-density metal traces are manufactured by means of laser ablation of the metal layer deposited on top of a glass substrate. This new procedure is faster, simpler and cheaper than photolithography for prototyping or low volume production. Different prototypes have been successfully manufactured and tested for electrical conductivity, bondability and metrology. 31. Growth and characterization of the spectra of EuAlO_3:Ti and GdAIO_3:Ti

Abstract

Two titanium-doped perovskites, EuAlO_3 and GdAlO_3, have been grown by laser-heated pedestal growth as potential visible–near-infrared lasers. The absorption spectra of EuAlO_3:Ti and the lack of Ti^3+ fluorescence from this material indicate the dominance of a charge-transfer transition between titanium and europium. The spectra of GdAlO_3:Ti in the visible region are consistent with Ti^3+ in an octahedral field. The absence of the charge-transfer transitions in the spectra of GdAlO_3:Ti is due to the third ionization potential of Gd’s being approximately 4 eV smaller than that of Eu. GdA1O_3:Ti has potential as a tunable-laser material with a center wavelength of 610 nm.
