Background: Malaria is a disease transmitted by vectors and caused by unicellular Plasmodium parasites. Malaria pathogenesis is associated with the ABO phenotype. However, there is little information on the frequency of malaria disease and its relationship with the ABO blood group in the study area. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of malaria infection and its association with the ABO blood group at Woldia Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Method: An institutional‐based cross‐sectional study was conducted from December 3, 2022, to February 30, 2023. Convenient sampling was used for selecting the study participants. To identify malaria parasites, thick and thin blood films were made. Additionally, blood was drawn to identify the ABO blood group type. Before being analyzed with SPSS software Version 27, the data was coded and entered into EpiData Version 3.1. To ascertain the variable's association, a logistic regression was done. Results: Out of 192 patients that attended Woldia Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, 16 (8.3%) were found to be infected with Plasmodium parasites using microscopy. Among them, 9 (4.7%), 5 (2.6%), and 2 (1.0%) had Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, or mixed infections, respectively. As a result, 30.7%, 25.5%, 24.5%, and 19.3% of the participants had blood types A, B, AB, and O, respectively (AOR = 2.359, 95% CI: 1.03–12.289, p = 0.03). Conclusion and Recommendation: The total number of microscopically confirmed malaria parasites was 8.3%. P. falciparum was dominant over P. vivax. Individuals with blood group O were less likely to get severe malaria than those with other blood groups. Aim Methods Results Conclusion Coeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune enteropathy that develops upon ingestion of food containing gluten. The established link between ABO blood groups and numerous infectious and non‐infectious illnesses prompted this investigation into blood group distribution and its relationship with dietary compliance among children diagnosed with CD.In this retrospective study, patients with CD who were followed for ≥1 year at the paediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinic of our hospital were evaluated. History, physical examination and coeliac serology results were reviewed for each patient. Patients were divided into two groups based on self‐reported compliance to a gluten‐free diet: diet‐adherent and non‐diet‐adherent. Patient and control groups were examined in terms of ABO blood groups.A total of 177 patients with CD were included in the study. A control group of 211 age‐ and sex‐matched children without any chronic disease who had undergone blood group testing for various reasons was included for comparison. A total of 65% (n = 115) of the patients were girls, and 35% (n = 62) were boys. No significant relationship was found between CD diagnosis and ABO blood groups among patients (P = 0.559). Furthermore, the dietary compliance status of the patients was not associated with any specific blood group (P = 0.951).No notable difference was found between patients with CD with or without gluten‐free diet compliance in terms of the distribution of ABO blood groups and Rhesus (Rh) factor. Background and Objectives Materials and Methods Results Conclusion Missense variants in exon 7 of the ABO gene can lead to the formation of cisAB alleles. These alleles encode glycosyltransferases (GTs) capable of synthesizing both A and B antigens. In this study, we report the discovery of a novel cisAB allele and characterize it at molecular, protein and serological levels.Blood and DNA samples from the proband and seven relatives were examined using standard and modified ABO phenotyping, polymerase chain reaction‐restriction fragment length polymorphism and ABO gene sequencing. We assessed the impact of the p.Leu324Ser variant on the protein structure of the mutant GT using bioinformatics tools.Molecular tests revealed a c.971T>C (p.Leu324Ser) variant in the ABO gene in five of the eight individuals. This variant results in a GT that produces more A antigens and fewer B antigens. Bioinformatics analysis suggests that the amino acid substitution (p.Leu324Ser) could potentially affect enzymatic activity and specificity of the GT.We identified a novel cisAB allele resulting from a c.971T>C variant in the ABO gene. Objective To correctly identify the blood group of ABO and study its molecular biological characteristics. Methods Blood samples from blood donors with discrepancies in forward and reverse typing using the microplate method were subjected to both saline tube agglutination test for serological identification and polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primers (PCR-SSP) for genotyping. Additionally, direct sequencing of exons 1 to 7 of the ABO gene was performed on some donor samples to analyze their blood phenotype, genotype and gene sequence. Results For 256 samples showing discrepancy between forward and reverse typing in microwell method, 119 were identified as normal ABO blood types, 90 were weakened ABO antibodies and 47 were ABO subtypes by serology tube test. According to the PCR-SSP genotyping test, 233 of 256 (91.02%) were consistent with serological phenotype and genotype, 17 of 256 (6.64%) were inconsistent, and 6 samples can′t read genotype based on the kit result typing table.A total of 17 genotypes were identified in 250 samples as AO1 in 56, AO2 in 58, AA in 50, BO1 in 31, BO2 in 17, BB in 8, O1O1 in 2, O1O2 in 7, AB in 13, AO4 in 1, A205O2 in 1, A205A in 1, A201A in 1, O1O4 in 1, O2O2 in 1, A201B in 1 and A205B in 1. Sequencing of exons 1 to 7 of the ABO gene was carried out in 78 samples, and 29 ABO alleles were detected, seven of which were common alleles (*A101, *A102, *A104, *B101, *O01, *O02, *O04), 22 of which were rare alleles (*A201, *A205, *Ax01, *Ax03, *Ax13, *Ax19, *Ax22, *Ael10, *B305, *Bel03, *Bel06/*Bx02, *Bw07, *Bw12, *Bw17, *Bw37, *O05, *O26, *O61, *B(A)04, *B(A)07, *cisAB01 and*cisAB01var). In addition, six rare allele mutation sites were identified (c.101A>G; c. 103_106delG; c. 146_147insGC; c. 259G>T; c. 322C>T; c. 932T>C). Conclusion The identification of ambiguous ABO blood group requires the combination of serological testing and molecular biological examination to correctly identify the blood type and ensure the safety of clinical blood transfusion.

Background and Objectives: ABO and Rh blood types are known to have associations with health and disease, but studies on their relationship to pregnancy outcomes have been largely inconclusive. We aimed to examine the associations between ABO and Rh blood groups in pregnant women with maternal–neonatal characteristics and outcomes including hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, cesarean section rate, preterm birth, postpartum quantitative blood loss, birth weight, and appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration scores. Methods: At the time of delivery, 2497 consecutive patients were tested for ABO and Rh blood groups. Only those who delivered singleton infants were included in the analysis (2392 patients, 95.8%). Demographic and clinical data were obtained from the electronic medical record. Associations between blood groups and maternal–neonatal characteristics and outcomes were assessed using logistic regression models. A significance threshold of 0.05 was used for all comparisons. Results: Of the 2392 delivering patients, 46.9% were blood group O, 37.5% were blood group A, 12.2% were blood group B, and 3.4% were blood group AB. In addition, 85.9% were Rh-positive and 14.1% Rh-negative. A total of 2127 (88.9%) women delivered at term. The cesarean section rate was 32.4%, 183 (7.7%) had chronic hypertension, 275 (11.5%) had gestational diabetes, and 396 (16.6%) had a postpartum hemorrhage. The median birth weight was 3330 g (interquartile range 2940–3640). No blood groups were significantly associated with these characteristic and outcome measures. Conclusion: At the time of delivery, no significant associations were identified between ABO and Rh blood groups and maternal–neonatal characteristics and outcomes in this delivery cohort of over 2000 women.

Abstract Background Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship between ABO and Rhesus (Rh) blood groups and various health outcomes. However, a comprehensive evaluation of the robustness of these associations is still lacking. Methods We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, and several regional databases from their inception until Feb 16, 2024, with the aim of identifying systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies exploring associations between ABO and Rh blood groups and diverse health outcomes. For each association, we calculated the summary effect sizes, corresponding 95% confidence intervals, 95% prediction interval, heterogeneity, small-study effect, and evaluation of excess significance bias. The evidence was evaluated on a grading scale that ranged from convincing (Class I) to weak (Class IV). We assessed the certainty of evidence according to the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation criteria (GRADE). We also evaluated the methodological quality of included studies using the A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR). AMSTAR contains 11 items, which were scored as high (8–11), moderate (4–7), and low (0–3) quality. We have gotten the registration for protocol on the PROSPERO database (CRD42023409547). Results The current umbrella review included 51 systematic reviews with meta-analysis articles with 270 associations. We re-calculated each association and found only one convincing evidence (Class I) for an association between blood group B and type 2 diabetes mellitus risk compared with the non-B blood group. Summary Routine ABO blood group typing of apparently healthy individuals sporadically uncovers unexplained mixed‐field reactions. Such blood group discrepancies can either result from a haematopoiesis‐confined or body‐wide dispersed chimerism or mosaicism. Taking the distinct clinical consequences of these four different possibilities into account, we explored the responsible cause in nine affected individuals. Genotype analyses revealed that more than three‐quarters were chimaeras (two same‐sex females, four same‐sex males, one sex‐mismatched male), while two were mosaics. Short tandem repeat analyses of buccal swab, hair root and nail DNA suggested a body‐wide involvement in all instances. Moreover, genome‐wide array analyses unveiled that in both mosaic cases the causative genetic defect was a unique copy‐neutral loss of heterozygosity encompassing the entire long arm of chromosome 9. The practical transfusion‐ or transplantation‐associated consequences of such incidental discoveries are well known and therefore easily manageable. Far less appreciated is the fact that such findings also call attention to potential problems that directly ensue from their specific genetic make‐up. In case of chimerism, these are the appearance of seemingly implausible family relationships and pitfalls in forensic testing. Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, endogenous non-coding RNA molecules that inhibit gene expression through either destabilization of the target mRNA or translational repression. MiRNAs recognize target sites, most commonly found in the 3′-untranslated regions of cognate mRNAs. This review aims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the role of miRNAs in the regulation of major blood group antigens such as ABH as well as cancer-specific glycans. Summary: Besides their known roles in the control of developmental processes, proliferation, apoptosis, and carcinogenesis, miRNAs have recently been identified to play a regulatory role during erythropoiesis and blood group antigen expression. Since only little is known about the function of the red cell membrane proteins carrying blood group antigens, it is of great interest to shed light on the regulatory mechanisms of blood group gene expression. Some carrier proteins of blood group antigens are not restricted to red blood cells and are widely expressed in other bodily fluids and tissues and quite a few play a crucial role in tumor cells, as either tumor suppressors or promoters. Background and Summary: We review the transcriptional regulation of ABO expression and discuss variants in the promoter and erythroid cell-specific regulatory region in individuals with weak ABO phenotypes such as Bm, Am, B3, and A3. We also review the molecular mechanisms responsible for variations in ABO expression in development and disease including the cell type-specific expression of ABO during erythroid cell differentiation, and reduction of A- or B-antigens in cancer cells or on red blood cells in patients with leukemia. Although the relationship between ABO blood group antigens and diseases has been characterized, the physiological significance of the ABO blood group system remains unclear. Neutralizing capacity measurement (NCM) of soluble ABH substances (SAS) in plasma was assessed to guide the selection of the appropriate ABO group of fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) for plasma exchange (PE) in blood group O recipients with ABO-incompatible transplantations. Neutralizing capacity was assessed by measuring anti-A and/or anti-B titers in samples comprising one unit of O FFP and 10 O EDTA plasma samples and subtracting the binary logarithm of the titer in each group with a saline dilution. Ten EDTA plasma samples with Lewis b (Leb) antigen positivity and 10 sets of pooled FFP from each blood group were used as diluents. In O FFP, the NCM values (mean±SD) were 3.4±0.52 (2.6±0.52) and 2.6±0.52 (1.5±0.3) in B and AB for IgM (total antibody) anti-B (both P <0.001), and in the 10 O EDTA plasma samples, they were 3.9±0.88 (3.1±0.88) and 3.2±0.79 (2.4±0.97) for IgM (P =0.0013) and total anti-B (P =0.025), respectively. In vitro analysis revealed that B FFP is more effective than AB FFP in reducing IgM and total anti-B antibody titers in O recipients, regardless of Leb antigen positivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to understand the factors affecting disease severity. Prior research has indicated the potential roles of the ABO blood group system in disease susceptibility and progression. Our objective was to investigate the association between ABO Blood groups and the severity of COVID-19 and clinicopathological parameters. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted across three locations of Ziauddin University Hospital, including COVID-19 outpatient departments (OPDs), wards, and intensive care units (ICUs) from May 2020 to December 2020. The study utilized a non-probability convenient sampling technique with a sample size of 120 PCR-positive adult patients, as calculated by OpenEpi with a 95% confidence interval. Patients were excluded if they were under 14, intellectually impaired, post-chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or had a malignant condition. Disease severity was determined based on clinicopathological parameters and associated with blood group data using ANOVA and Chi-square tests in SPSS version 21. Results: A significant association was found between the ABO blood groups and COVID-19 severity. Blood group-A was notably overrepresented in patients with severe COVID-19 and correlated with higher inflammatory markers and coagulation parameters. Conclusion: ABO blood group, particularly Blood Group-A significantly associates with the severity of COVID-19. This finding suggests the potential utility of ABO blood group typing as a predictive marker for disease severity, which could contribute to personalized patient management strategies. Objective: To investigate the association and risk estimation of ABO blood group distribution and clinical attributes in patients with Knee Osteoarthritis. Method: This was a hospital-based study conducted at, Liaquat University Hospital Hyderabad from December, 2019 to December, 2022 to investigate this least researched area of highly prevalent musculoskeletal disease in Pakistan. Non-Probability Convenience Sampling was used for selecting 190 cases of confirm Knee Osteoarthritis patients diagnosed by Orthopedic surgeon based on standard clinical and radiographic criteria. Data were analyzed using IBM-SPSS version 23.0. Percentages and frequencies were counted for categorical data. Pearson Chi Square test and fisher's exact test were used to check the association and Multinomial Logistic Regression was used to estimate the risk for moderate and severe kellgren grading Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) cases with ABO blood grouping in comparison of mild Kellgren grading. Results: A total of 190 cases of Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) were included in the study. Females (61.6%) and patients with age 50 and above were 40.5 % were found in greater proportion. Majority (41.6%) were classified radiologically as mild cases with O group (39.5%) and positive Rh antigen (95.8%). Strong association (p = <0.01) was found between gender, age group and ABO blood group with KOA radiological Kellgren and Lawrence score. This retrospective study was conducted in 2017 during the dual dengue and chikungunya outbreak in Bangladesh. Febrile participants underwent blood tests for chikungunya, dengue, and ABO groups and rhesus (Rh) factors. Blood grouping information was gathered from healthy donors. Males and those aged between 18 and 49 years had a higher risk of contracting dengue and chikungunya. Blood group O exhibited the highest infection rates at ∼50%, whereas group AB had the lowest at ∼9% among the participants in the study. Yet, when considering the general population's blood group distribution, the combined odds of infection were 2.0, 3.5, and 1.4 times higher in groups B, O, and AB, respectively, than in group A. Infection rates were greater in Rh-negative people. Blood groups B, O, and AB showed higher susceptibility than blood group A according to adjusted odds ratios. Blood groups ABO and Rh factor hold significance in disease susceptibility and vaccine effectiveness. Keeping these implications in mind, further investigations are necessary to understand the mechanisms underlying these connections and their effects on the efficacy of dengue and chikungunya vaccines. This research explores the association between ABO blood groups and susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection, analyzing Convalescent COVID-19 plasma (CCP) donors (n = 500) and healthy whole blood donors (BDs) (n = 9678) during the pandemic (1 May 2020 to 30 April 2021). A comparison is made with pre-pandemic BDs (n = 11,892) from 1 May 2018 to 30 April 2019. Significant differences in blood group distribution are observed, with blood group A individuals being three times more likely to be CCP donors. Conversely, blood groups B, O, and AB are less associated with CCP donation. Notably, blood group O is more prevalent among regular BDs, suggesting potential resistance to SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study underscores variations in blood group distribution during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic periods. The findings support previous research indicating a link between blood group antigens and viral susceptibility, including SARS-CoV-2. Understanding these associations has implications for public health strategies, with potential for predicting COVID-19 outcomes and transmission patterns. Background: The International Society of Blood Transfusion has documented 30 distinct blood group systems; the ABO and Rh systems are regarded as the most important blood group systems. Determining the ABO-Rh (D) blood group is vital in clinical settings to prevent the possibility of incompatibility and Rhesus D alloimmunization. Objective: This study aimed to provide information on the distribution of blood groups and Rh factor among Bowen University Teaching Hospital School of Nursing students with the view of educating students about the risks of rhesus incompatibility. Material and Methods: retrospective cross-sectional study which reviewed the preschool entry medical records of Nursing students of Bowen University Teaching Hospital Ogbomoso from 2019-2022. The data were systematically collated, analyzed and used to generate frequency tables. Results: a total of 216 records were reviewed. The majority were females (84.3%), less than or equal to 18 years (48.6%) and with blood group O (44.4%) and rhesus positivity (94.0%). None from the male gender had an AB blood group. Prevalence of Rh(D) positive was higher among females (85.3%) while Rh(D) negative was higher among males (14.7%). There was a significant association between gender and Rhesus factor. Conclusion: the findings from this study shows that blood group O and Rh(D) positive had the highest prevalence while the blood group AB and Rh(D) negative had the lowest prevalence. Therefore, effort should be made to educate the few who could suffer adverse events from Rhesus incompatibility.

Background and objectives: Dyslipidemia is one of the major predictors of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of morbidity and mortality in developed as well as developing countries around the world. Cardiovascular diseases are becoming more prevalent in Pakistan and are the major cause of mortality in Pakistan. The number of studies previously carried out on ABO blood group association has been reported with many diseases including cancer, ulcer, diabetes, and hypertension. However, no study has previously reported an association of blood groups in apparently normal subjects. The objective of the study is to observe the association of the ABO blood group with Lipid Profile and compare the association in different ABO blood groups. Methods: This cross-sectional study includes 600 randomly selected subjects from different organizations of district Hyderabad including Universities, Colleges, Hospitals, students, faculty members, and their employees. This study was conducted from February 2021 to January 2022. Informed consent was obtained before the enrolment of volunteers. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data related to sociodemographic characteristics. A detailed history was taken followed by a thorough clinical examination. All biochemical tests were performed using the blood analyzer and micro lab. Data obtained by structured questionnaire and anthropometric parameters were analyzed by SPSS version 20.0. Results: In this study, the Overall B blood group was found more prevalent and similarly found in both males and females. We found Cholesterol higher in the O blood group and Rh-positive subjects.Triglycerides were found higher in B and O and Rh Positive subjects. HDL was found to be higher in B and Rh-positive subjects. LDL was found higher in B and O and Rh Positive subjects. HDL was found to be higher in B and Rh-positive subjects. VLDL was found higher in both B and O AND Rh Positive subjects. Conclusion: The evidence we collected is suggestive of the association of the ABO blood group with Lipid Profile.

Objective To investigate the distribution of ABO and RhD blood groups among voluntary blood donors in Guangzhou, in order to ensure clinical blood safety and better serve blood donors. Methods Routine ABO and RhD blood group screening tests were carried out among voluntary blood donors from January 2021 to December 2022. The composition ratio of ABO blood group was statistically analyzed. The samples with discrepancy between forward and reverse blood grouping and negative RhD blood group samples were further verified by serological test to analyze the ABO subtypes and the reasons for missed detection. Results A total of 749 123 blood samples were screened from January 2021 to December 2022, and 513 291 samples were collected after excluding repeat blood donors, with the ABO blood groups as 208 126(40.55%) of O type, 138 859(27.05%) of A type, 130 987(25.52%) of B type and 35 319(6.88%) of AB type. The screening results showed discrepancy between forward and reverse blood grouping in 506 samples, of which 58 were with weak/non-erythrocyte reaction, 16 with erythrocyte reaction, 215 with weak/non-serum reaction, and 217 with serum reaction. Further serological test indicated that 44 samples were ABO subtypes, among which 13 were subtype A, 26 subtype B, 5 subtype AB and 3 B (A) and 14 Bombay-like blood group. The blood group with the highest missed detection rate in repeat blood donors were A3/B3 subtype (68.42%). A total of 128 unexpected antibody positive samples were detected among 513 291 samples A total of 2 277 samples were screened negative for RhD blood type, of which 2 188 were confirmed to be Rh negative (2 188/513 291, 0.43%), 89 were D variants (89/513 291, 0.02%, ) and 30 were detected with unexpected antibodies (30/2 188, 1.37%). Conclusion The ABO blood group distribution of blood donors in Guangzhou is O>A>B>AB, and the proportion of RhD negative population is 0.43%, slightly highter than 0.3%-0.4% of Han population nationwide. The ABO blood group subtype is dominated by B subtype. The detection rate and missed detection rate of A3/B3 subtypes in routine blood group tests are the highest.

Objective To investigate and analyze the serological and molecular biological characteristics of B(A) subgroup in a tertiary hospital in Jiaozhou, Qingdao. Methods From November 2019 to February 2023, the samples of 12 patients were suspected to be AB subgroup by microcolumn glass bead method and saline test tube method. The exons 6 and 7 of ABO gene were further amplified, sequenced and analyzed to determine the ABO allele type. Results A total of 9 cases of B(A) subgroup were detected in 26 065 patients in Jiaozhou, with a detection rate of 0.345 ‰ ( 9/26 065 ). Among the 9 cases of B(A) subgroup, 8 cases of serological reaction showed AweakB, and the gene detection was heterozygous for BA.04 gene and O gene.One case of serological reaction showed ABweak, and the gene detection was heterozygous for BA.04 gene and A gene. Conclusion Blood group serological combined with gene detection can accurately identify ABO blood group. B(A) subgroup alleles can exist in individuals with serological reaction of ABweak.

Background and Objectives: Mixed‐field agglutination in ABO phenotyping (A3, B3) has been linked to genetically different blood cell populations such as in chimerism, or to rare variants in either ABO exon 7 or regulatory regions. Clarification of such cases is challenging and would greatly benefit from sequencing technologies that allow resolving full‐gene haplotypes at high resolution. Materials and Methods: We used long‐read sequencing by Oxford Nanopore Technologies to sequence the entire ABO gene, amplified in two overlapping long‐range PCR fragments, in a blood donor presented with A3B phenotype. Confirmation analyses were carried out by Sanger sequencing and included samples from other family members. Results: Our data revealed a novel heterozygous g.10924C>A variant on the ABO*A allele located in the transcription factor binding site for RUNX1 in intron 1 (+5.8 kb site). Inheritance was shown by the results of the donor's mother, who shared the novel variant and the anti‐A specific mixed‐field agglutination. Conclusion: We discovered a regulatory variant in the 8‐bp RUNX1 motif of ABO, which extends current knowledge of three other variants affecting the same motif and also leading to A3 or B3 phenotypes. Objective: To find the frequency of obstructive and restrictive lung disease in various blood groups in young students of Aziz Fatimah Medical and dental college. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at Aziz Fatima Medical and Dental College, Faisalabad from 1st January to 31st March 2022. It included 80 participants of first-year MBBS comprising both genders between 18 to 22 years. Ethical approval was taken from the institutional ethical committee of the institute. After fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria blood grouping was done by conventional slide method and Spirometry was performed to access lung function parameters to determine obstructive and restrictive lung diseases. Data was analyzed by using SPSS version 26. Results: The study population included 36 males (45%) and 44 females (55%). Mean±SD age of participants was 20 ± 1.07 years. The most frequent blood group was B followed by O, A and AB. Restrictive lung disease ( FEV1/FVC ratio ≥ 0.8) was found in 19(23.8%) participants while obstructive lung disease ( FEV1/FVC ratio <0.8) was found in 46(57.5%) participants. Obstructive lung diseases were more frequently found in subjects with blood group AB while restrictive lung diseases were more commonly noticed in subjects with blood group O. Mean±SD of FEV1/FVC% of subjects with obstructive and restrictive lung diseases were 45.15± 19.04 and 81.79±8.25 respectively. Background: It is necessary to identify human individuals for personal, social, and legal reasons. The use of conventional methods such as use of fingerprints and lip prints is of paramount importance since personal identification by other means such as DNA analysis is sophisticated and not available in rural areas and developing countries. Lip Prints are the Wrinkles and grooves imprints visible on the lips They have been named by Tsuchihashi as 'Sulci labiorum rubrorum'. 19 major groups have been identified in humans by Karl Landsteiner (1971). Among these only "ABO" and "Rhesus" groups are used most of the time. Studies of the association between lip prints, blood groups and gender are scanty in the literature. There are other reference data available on various forms of personal identification such as fingerprints, lip prints, etc. which are of paramount importance. Aim and Objectives: The present study aims to determine and investigate the percentage distribution and the association of lip print, right and left thumbprints, blood groups, and gender among the north Indian population. Materials and Methods: For the study, we enrolled 200 north Indian students aged between 18 years to 25 years as a subject after obtaining ethical clearance from the ethical committee. Written informed consent was obtained from the study subjects. A single calibrated trained interviewer described the purpose and process of the study to the participants and recorded lip print, thumbprint, and blood groups. The examination was done on a simple chair and in abundant daylight conditions. Results: Among the total of 200 north Indian students aged between 18 years to 25 years, lip print in various quadrants was compared with gender, blood groups, and thumbprints were compared, and interpretation was made. Conclusion: The present study concluded that the Reticular pattern was the most predominant lip print pattern followed by Intersected and Branched Patterns in both genders. B+ve blood group was predominant among subjects. Loop pattern was the most predominant thumbprint. There was a significant correlation between left and right thumbprints. The present study did not show any statistical correlation of lip print pattern with gender (P value 0.65), thumbprint pattern (P value 0.56), and ABO blood groups (P value 0.841). Introduction: Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) occurs in 0.7–5.6% of patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, especially from unrelated or haploidentical donor or after lympho-depleted transplant; the majority of cases are represented by warm AIHA, occurring in a full donor chimerism setting. Standard treatments (corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulin, splenectomy, rituximab, cyclophosphamide, plasma exchange) lead to lower response rates than those reported in primary AIHA. Daratumumab use has been proposed in many autoimmune conditions (immune thrombocytopenic purpura, aplastic anemia, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis), but only few reports have been published on its use for post-HSCT AIHA, mainly in pediatric patients. Case Presentation: We report the successful use of daratumumab in a 68-year-old patient, suffering from post-HSCT AIHA. Five months after Rh-mismatched HSCT, the patient was diagnosed with anti-D AIHA. After first-line treatment (oral prednisone, rituximab, and plasma exchange) failure, being still transfusion-dependent with symptomatic anemia, he underwent treatment with daratumumab, achieving both clinical and laboratory responses. The present study investigated the effect of blood group on cochlear function in a large participant sample across different age groups. The study hypothesis was that participants with blood group O would show relatively reduced cochlear function as reflected in otoacoustic emission (OAE) measures. Data were collected from transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE), distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), DPOAE input/output (I/O) function, and spontaneous otoacoustic emission (SOAE) recordings. Four hundred and sixty-three normal hearing adults aged 20–59 years among the four ABO blood groups participated in the study. TEOAE and DPOAE amplitudes did not reveal significant differences for participants with blood group O compared with participants with non-O blood groups. No significant differences in I/O function categories were found among participants with different blood groups. SOAE prevalence was also not significantly different across blood groups. However, previously reported age and gender differences for OAE variables were confirmed. Participants with blood group O were not found to have significantly reduced cochlear function, based on OAE measures. Background: Several studies have linked coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) risk to age and ABO blood groups. Variations in plasma angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) levels and blood counts have been reported, suggesting an association between disease severity and low lymphocyte levels. Aim: this study aimed to understand how these factors relate to COVID-19 in Ghanaian patients, considering geographical and demographic differences. Methods: Participants were recruited from six hospitals in Kumasi, Ghana, between June 2020 and July 2021. Nasopharyngeal swabs were taken to test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and blood samples were collected for complete blood count testing, ABO/Rhesus typing, and assessment of plasma ACE2 levels. Demographic and COVID-19 severity data were gathered, and IBM SPSS version 25.0 was used for analysis. Results: Overall, 515 patients were enrolled, out of which 55.9% (n = 288/515) were males and 50.3% (n = 259/515) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. The median age was 37 years (IQR = 26–53). Age was significantly associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection (p = 0.002). The severe COVID-19 group was the oldest (70 years, IQR = 35–80) and presented with anaemia (haemoglobin, g/dL: 9.55, IQR = 7.85–11.93), leukocytosis (WBC × 103/μL: 15.87, IQR = 6.68–19.80), neutrophilia (NEUT × 106/μL: 14.69, IQR = 5.70–18.96) and lymphocytopenia (LYMPH × 106/μL: 0.47, IQR = 0.22–0.66). No association was found between SARS-CoV-2 positivity and ABO (p = 0.711) or Rh (p = 0.805) blood groups; no association was also found between plasma ACE2 levels and SARS-CoV-2 status (p = 0.079). However, among COVID-19 participants, plasma ACE2 levels were significantly reduced in the moderate illness group (40.68 ng/mL, IQR = 34.09–48.10) compared with the asymptomatic group (50.61 ng/mL, IQR = 43.90–58.61, p = 0.015). Conclusions: While there may be no real association between the ABO blood group, as well as plasma ACE2 levels, and SARS-CoV-2 infection in Ghanaian patients, older individuals are at a higher risk of severe disease. Aim: To correlate the ABO blood group susceptibility to disease severity in COVID-19-positive cases among Indian populations. Objectives: Association of ABO blood group patterns to disease severity in COVID-19-positive cases. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, observational study design was conducted among 700 confirmed COVID-19-positive cases admitted to the tertiary health care center in Maharashtra, India. Abstract Background Human ABO blood group type and the antigenic secretor status are hypothesized to associate with oral diseases including oral cancer. Secretor status is the ability of individuals to secrete blood group antigens into body fluids. This study aimed to evaluate the secretor status of ABO antigens of saliva in patients with oral cancers or oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) relative to healthy adults. Methods A systematic and comprehensive online search from inception to April 28, 2022, was carried out in MEDLINE, Embase, PsycInfo, and Emcare. The language was limited to English. Yielded records were screened by two independent reviewers at the title and abstract phase and at full-text screening. Studies investigating adults (≥ 18 years) with oral cancers or oral potentially malignant disorders compared to adults free of oral cancer were included in this study. Data were extracted according to the planned objectives. Methodological quality was assessed, and the findings were analyzed narratively. Meta-analyses were conducted to pool the odds of the non-secretor status of oral cancers and OPMDs compared to healthy adults. Results The search included a total of 34 studies from three databases. Nine duplicates were removed. During the title and abstract screening, 11 irrelevant studies were excluded. Twelve studies were screened during the full-text screening, and eight articles were eligible to be included in the final analysis. A pooled odds ratio (OR) of 3.80 (95%CI, 1.53–9.44) was estimated when pooled 1254 oral cancers and oral potentially malignant disorders patients compared to 666 healthy adults. Discussion and conclusion The odds of being a non-secretor appear to be approximately 3.8 times higher in patients with oral cancers and oral potentially malignant disorders compared to healthy adults. The lack of ABO blood group antigens in body fluids of non-secretors is more exposed to exogenous antigens than secretors. The host-parasite interactions of secretors and non-secretors underlying oral cancer and other diseases may be evidence to support or refuse them. Clinicians may use the secretor status as a detection test during their regular oral check-ups for high-risk populations for oral cancers. Non-secretors can be given more attention considering them as high-risk groups, and in terms of prognosis, differences between these two groups may be expected.

Introduction: Balavata Kala janm (~birth in a season when people naturally gain strength) is one of an individual's Bala (~strength) enhancing factors, according to Ayurveda. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) showed heterogeneous clinical manifestations in the global population, and the role of innate immunity in COVID-19 pathogenesis came up. The objective of this study was to see the association between the season of birth (SOB) and COVID-19 clinical manifestations. The association of ABO blood group systems was studied as a secondary objective. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted from October 2020 to January 2021 at an Ayurveda research center in India. Confirmed patients of COVID-19 from 0 to 80 years of age group were telephonically contacted and interviewed through a structured questionnaire prepared in Google Forms after obtaining informed verbal consent. Based on the Ayurvedic concept of strength in Adana (~Northern solstice) and Visarga Kala (~Southern solstice), the categorization of participants according to their SOB was done. Results: The study included 402 participants and analyzed data through IBM SPSS. The odds ratio (OR) of COVID-19 clinical outcomes and SOB was analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression model to control confounding variables. Birth in the season of maximum strength was significantly associated with a lower percentage (22.1%) of symptomatic cases (crude OR = 0.54, 95% confidence intervals = 0.33–0.87). Maximum participants (55.1%) had B blood group, and the percentage of symptomatic participants was the highest among them, being 22.9%. However, this association was insignificant in the multivariate logistic regression model. Conclusion: Study outcomes indicate that SOB has a significant effect on COVID-19 clinical outcomes.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has infected millions of people globally. Many recent studies have suggested that the ABO blood type may contribute to COVID-19 infection immunopathogenesis. We aimed to determine the proportional distribution of COVID-19 infection among ABO blood types. Methodology: This retrospective research was conducted in the city of Jodhpur (Rajasthan), India. The research involved 1140 COVID-19 patients, whose medical records were available in blood banks. The data was evaluated statistically using IBM SPSS 26. Results: The proportion of blood group B among infected patients was highest (37.36%). Among all the cases, blood group A had the highest odds ratio of 1.062 (CI 95%, 0.92-1.21, p = 0.412). All versus one blood group analysis also showed that blood group A (odds ratio = 1.062 [CI 95%, 0.92-1.22] p = 0.412) was more likely to be infected with COVID-19 than the remaining blood groups. In the year 2021, blood group B had the highest risk of COVID-19 infection (odds ratio = 1.138). Conclusions: Based on our findings, the blood groups A and B are more likely to be infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The overall average age for COVID-19 infection was lower, and the number of incidences in female patients was higher in 2021, relative to 2020. Background and Objectives: The presence of blood subtypes may lead to difficulties in blood group identification; however, third‐generation sequencing (TGS) can help in accurately identifying difficult blood groups, and study the serological characteristics and molecular mechanism of Ael subtypes. Materials and Methods: ABO blood group was identified by the standard serological technique, weak blood group antigen was identified by adsorption‐elution experiments, ABH substance in the saliva was determined and glycosyltransferase activity of A and B was detected. The ABO gene full‐length sequence and promoter region were amplified by specific primers using single‐molecule real‐time sequencing, with the amplified products being sequenced directly and analysed in real time. Results: The patient was serologically identified as Ael subtype, and TGS analysis revealed new intron mutations in Ael patients (c.467C>T; c.29‐10T>A). Background and Objectives: ABO and Rh blood types are known to have associations with health and disease, but studies on their relationship to pregnancy outcomes have been largely inconclusive. We aimed to examine the associations between ABO and Rh blood groups in pregnant women with maternal-neonatal characteristics and outcomes including hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes, cesarean section rate, preterm birth, postpartum quantitative blood loss, birth weight, and appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration scores. Methods: At the time of delivery, 2497 consecutive patients were tested for ABO and Rh blood groups. Only those who delivered singleton infants were included in the analysis (2392 patients, 95.8%). Demographic and clinical data were obtained from the electronic medical record. Associations between blood groups and maternal-neonatal characteristics and outcomes were assessed using logistic regression models. A significance threshold of 0.05 was used for all comparisons. Results: Of the 2392 delivering patients, 46.9% were blood group O, 37.5% were blood group A, 12.2% were blood group B, and 3.4% were blood group AB. In addition, 85.9% were Rh-positive and 14.1% Rh-negative. A total of 2127 (88.9%) women delivered at term. The cesarean section rate was 32.4%, 183 (7.7%) had chronic hypertension, 275 (11.5%) had gestational diabetes, and 396 (16.6%) had a postpartum hemorrhage. The median birth weight was 3330 g (interquartile range 2940-3640). No blood groups were significantly associated with these characteristic and outcome measures. Objective: The study aimed to investigate the association between ABO blood groups and helicobacter infection. Method: 150 participants, including 93 females and 57 males between the age group of 18-60 years, were involved in the study. A sample of 3 ml blood was collected and screened against H. pylori antibodies (IgG) by H. pylori rapid diagnostic kit. ABO and Lewis antigen phenotypes were determined with a macroscopic agglutination technique. Results: According to the study's findings, there were 55.42% women (46/83) and 44.5% men (37/83) among the 83 seropositive patients, while 70.14% women (47/67) and 29.85% men (20/67) were found among the 67 seronegative patients. The findings of this study reveal that those with the blood groups O+ and B+ have an estimated 25.3% (21/83) higher risk of H. pylori infection, whereas when seronegative individuals were investigated, it was discovered that blood groups 0+ were also leading, 28.4% (19/67), indicating that there was no significant difference between H. pylori seropositive and seronegative patients (p-value = 0.5146). Other factors, such as gender and family history, did not significantly affect the incidence of H. pylori. Aims. Urinary tract infection considers as one the most common adult bacterial infection worldwide. Antigens of ABO and Lewis blood groups may influence bacterial adherence and lead to an increase in the frequency of UTI in adults. The aim of this study to evaluate the relationship of ABO, and Lewis blood groups with UTI. As well as to determine the main microbial cause of UTI and its association and distribution with blood group antigens. Method. Blood sample of 80 UTI patients and 50 healthy persons used for determination of ABO and Lewis blood groups by agglutination assay. Urine samples of UTI patients were cultured and identified based on culture characteristics, gram staining and biochemical tests. Results. Urinary tract infection was significantly highest in patients with O blood group (42.5%) Lewis (a-b-) phenotype (38.8%) as compared with other blood groups and with control group. Escherichia coli was found to be the commonest bacterial isolates observed in UTI patients. Also E. coli was significantly highest among UTI patients with O blood group and Lewis (a-b-) phenotype. Conclusion. The study concludes that ABO and Lewis blood types as well as secretor status have a significant association with susceptibility to infection with urinary tract infection. Candidiasis is an infection caused by Candida spp., mostly Candida albicans. Infection with Candida spp. in immunocompetent individuals is often limited to the mouth, genital area or skin. However, patients who are immunocompromised due to infections or medications including corticosteroids or anticancer drugs are more susceptible to systemic candidiasis and candidemia. Upon C. albicans infections, the pathogenic yeasts enter the bloodstream and disseminate to the remote organs, leading to the formation of germ tube. Dimorphic adaptation is one of contributing virulent factors in C. albicans, which is responsible for disease pathogenesis and severity. However, little is known about whether differences among human ABO blood groups facilitate the development of C. albicans germ tube. Therefore, this study investigated the germ tube formation of C. albicans that grown in human serums from different ABO blood groups. Human pool serums varying ABO blood groups from healthy individuals were tested for C. albicans germ tube induction. After incubation for 2 h at 37 °C, the rate of germ tube formation at 15-min intervals was determined. Serum from human blood group A exhibited the highest rate of germ tube formation. Objective: There have been attempts to evaluate the relationship between atopic diseases like asthma and blood group types based on a genetic component associated with atopic diseases. The present study aims to determine if there is any relation between ABO and Rhesus (Rh) blood group and allergic rhinitis (AR). Methods: The distribution of blood groups in 131 AR patients and 131 controls (study controls) was analyzed. Blood group distribution from an analysis of 112 studies from India, comprising of data from 1 429 996 donors (population controls), was compared to the cases (AR patients) in our study as well. A literature review was performed to better understand the correlation. Results: The most common blood group among patients with AR was B+ve. In both control groups, O+ve and B+ve were the most detected. The differences in ABO distribution between the patients and either of the control groups were not statistically significant. Rhesus-negative blood types were significantly higher in AR patients compared to study controls (P = .003) and the population control group (P = .03). Conclusion: The ABO blood type does not appear to influence the prevalence of AR in our study population. While some studies found no association, others have suggested a link between blood group O and susceptibility to atopic diseases. Rhesus-positive blood types in our study were found to be at higher risk for AR, but no other studies support these findings. Background: Colorectal cancer (CC) is one of the most important causes of death due to cancer in the world. The association of blood groups with CC in many races has been reported in previous studies. So far, no study has evaluated the relationship between blood group type, tumor location, and polyp type. Objectives: This study aimed at evaluating the association of the ABO blood group and CC, tumor location, and polyp type. Methods: In this case-control study, 802 subjects (401 cases and 401 controls), who underwent surgery at our medical centers between 2014 and 2021, were included. The case group was selected from the hospital records of patients with CC, and the controls were selected from non-cancer patients who were admitted to the same centers for reasons other than cancer. Patients' demographic characteristics and clinical and pathology findings were extracted from the medical profile, and blood group information was extracted from the blood bank. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used for the predictive variables of CC. Results: The risk of CC inpatients with blood type A was significantly higher than non-A. While the risk of developing CC inpatients with blood type O was significantly lower than non-O O. The risk of developing neoplastic polyps was significantly higher in patients with blood type A compared to non-A. The results of multivariate analysis showed that ABO blood type A(OR Adju: 1.66) and O (OR Adju: 0.78) and neoplastic polyp type (OR Adju: 1.36) were associated with CC. ABO blood group has been shown to be a major determinant of plasma von Willebrand factor (vWF) levels. O blood group is associated with the lowest vWF levels and confers an increased risk of hemorrhagic events, while AB blood group has the highest levels and is associated with thromboembolic events. We hypothesized in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients that O blood type would have the highest and AB blood type would have the lowest transfusions, with an inverse relationship to survival. A retrospective analysis of 307 VA-ECMO patients at a major quaternary referral hospital was performed. The distribution of blood groups included 124 group O (40%), 122 group A (40%), 44 group B (14%), and 17 group AB (6%) patients. Regarding usage of packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, and platelets, there was a non-statistically significant difference in transfusions, with group O having the least and group AB having the most requirements. However, there was a statistically significant difference in cryoprecipitate usage when comparing to group O: group A (1.77, 95% CI: 1.05-2.97, P <.05), group B (2.05, 95% CI: 1.16-3.63, P <.05), and group AB (3.43, 95% CI: 1.71-6.90, P <.001). Furthermore, a 20% increase in length of days on ECMO was associated with a 2–12% increase in blood product usage. The cumulative 30-day mortality rate for groups O and A was 60%, group B was 50%, and group AB was 40%; the 1-year mortality rate for groups O and A was 65%, group B was 57%, and group AB was 41%; however, the mortality differences were not statistically significant. An association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the ABO blood group has been reported. However, such an association has not been studied in the Japanese population on a large scale. Little is known about the association between COVID-19 and ABO genotype. This study investigated the association between COVID-19 and ABO blood group/genotype in a large Japanese population. All Japanese patients diagnosed with COVID-19 were recruited through the Japan COVID-19 Task Force between February 2020 and October 2021. We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 1790 Japanese COVID-19 patients whose DNA was used for a genome-wide association study. We compared the ABO blood group/genotype in a healthy population (n = 611, control) and COVID-19 patients and then analyzed their associations and clinical outcomes. Blood group A was significantly more prevalent (41.6% vs. 36.8%; P = 0.038), and group O was significantly less prevalent (26.2% vs. 30.8%; P = 0.028) in the COVID-19 group than in the control group. Moreover, genotype OO was significantly less common in the COVID-19 group. Furthermore, blood group AB was identified as an independent risk factor for most severe diseases compared with blood group O [aOR (95% CI) = 1.84 (1.00–3.37)]. In ABO genotype analysis, only genotype AB was an independent risk factor for most severe diseases compared with genotype OO. BACKGROUND: ABO blood type affects general and oral health, as salivary physiochemical features are different among various blood kinds. Thus, these may affect the dental caries severity. This work studied the caries experience prevalence in individuals displaying various blood types. This work tested the association between ABO blood group and dental caries. Also, this work evaluated which ABO groups are associated with a higher vulnerability to dental caries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty Tikrit University students were randomly selected and were put into four groups based on blood type, and dental caries experience was diagnosed and scored based on the index of Decay Missing Filling Teeth and Surfaces (WHO, 2013). Objective To carry out serological and molecular biological identification of B (A) subtype, and discuss the rational blood transfusion strategy. Methods Serological and direct sequencing methods were used to detect serotype and genotype of 7 cases of B (A) subtype, and cross matching was performed by saline medium and anti human globulin card to analyze the red blood cells(RBCs) transfusion strategy. Results The serology results of blood type of 7 samples were similar, with B(A)04/O01 in 3 cases, B(A)04/O02 in 2 cases and B(A)02/O01 in 2 cases. 7 cases of B (A) subtypes were matched with randomly selected blood donors of type O and B on the major side. Conclusion B(A) subtypes should be identified by genotyping techniques. Washed RBCs of type B and O can be used for B(A) blood type transfusion.

Abstract Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide. The survival rate after hepatectomy as the first line of treatment for HCC depends on various factors. This study evaluated the association of the ABO blood group and Rh with overall survival (OS) and Recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate after hepatectomy. Methods This multicenter retrospective cohort study reviewed the medical files of 639 HCC patients who underwent hepatectomy from 2010 to 2022 in three medical centers affiliated with the Iran University of Medical Sciences. Patient data, including demographic, clinical, tumor characteristics, and post-surgery outcomes, were collected by referring to the patient’s medical profiles. The Cox proportional hazard investigated the relationship between ABO blood group type and OS and RFS rate after hepatectomy. Results The five-year OS and RFS rates were 25.4% and 18.7%, respectively. The five-year OS (Lok rank:40.89, P:0.001) and RFS rate in patients with blood type A were significantly lower than in non-A patients. (Lok rank:10.8, P:0.001) The multivariate Cox analysis showed that blood type A, age 5 cm, Poor tumor differentiation, presence of metastasis, The number of involved lymph nodes ≤ 2, and serum Alpha-Fetoprotein)AFP( level ≥ 400 were significantly related to the decreased survival rate of HCC patients after hepatectomy (P 0.05). Conclusion Blood group type A, compared to non-A, can be associated with decreased OS and RFS rates in patients with HCC after hepatectomy.

Purpose: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an inflammatory musculoskeletal disease. The exact causes of PsA have not been identified. ABO and Rh blood groups continue to be an area of interest for various diseases. In this study, we aimed to evaluate whether there is any difference in the distribution of ABO and Rh blood groups in PsA. Materials and Methods: 233 PsA patients (PsA group) consecutively referred to the adult rheumatology outpatient clinics of a tertiary care hospital of central Anatolia between January 2019 and June 2020 were enrolled. The blood groups of the PsA group were compared with the blood groups of 6280 individuals who tested before elective operations at the same hospital between 1 January 2019 and 31 June 2020 (Control Group). Fourteen of the control group were excluded due to the presence of psoriasis/PsA in their medical records. In addition, the blood groups of 38.416 people who voluntarily donated blood to the Turkish Red Crescent Kayseri Blood Center between January 1, 2019 and July 1, 2020 (donor group) were compared with the blood groups of the control group. Results: There was no significant difference between the PsA patients and the control group in any blood group, both in women, men and also cumulatively. Conclusion: The result of the study shows there is no significant difference in the blood groups between patients with PsA and the control group.

Background: Association between the ABO blood group and patient outcomes in COVID-19 patients is still unexplored. A known association may help to understand possible risks in advance to the management of such COVID-19 patients. The present study was designed to test such association if there is any, between the ABO blood group and the severity of COVID-19 patients. Methods: The present hospital-based observational study was conducted at a COVID-19 dedicated tertiary care hospital in North India over a period of six months during the first wave of the pandemic in the country. Five hundred consecutive patients, who tested positive for COVID-19 using RT-PCR on oropharyngeal/nasopharyngeal swabs, admitted to the hospital were included in the study. ABO and Rhesus (Rh) blood grouping was done on leftover hematology blood samples using gel column agglutination technology. Required clinical details of patients including age, gender, clinical symptoms, comorbidities, outcomes, etc., were obtained from the patient’s case sheets. Results: The most common blood group was ‘B’ (42.8%) followed by ‘O’ (23.4%), and ‘A’ (22.4%) while the least common was ‘AB’ (11.4%). Rh positive was seen in 96.2% while 3.8% were negative. Baseline characteristics were comparable including length of hospital stay, duration of symptoms, and associated comorbid illnesses. The need for intensive care unit (ICU) admissions (P = 0.05) and intubations (P = 0.20) was similar across all four blood groups. Differences in the severity of COVID-19 disease and mortalities among the groups were non-significant. Conclusion: There was no observed association found between the ABO blood group and COVID-19 infection requiring hospitalization, ICU admission, intubation, and outcomes. However, there was a higher proportion of breathlessness and the presence of at least one comorbidity in blood group O as compared to others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
