In this paper a simple right R-module S over a ring R is called hypersimple if its injective hull E(S) is cyclic, and a ring R is called right hypersimple if every simple right R-module is hypersimple. A ring is said to satisfy the $2$-nil-sum property if every non central-unit is the sum of two nilpotents. We prove that a ring satisfies the $2$-nil-sum property iff it is either a simple ring with the $2$-nil-sum property or a commutative local ring with nil Jacobson radical, and we provide an example of a simple ring with the $2$-nil-sum property that is not commutative. Motivated by Hirano-Tominaga's work \cite{HT} on rings for which every element is a sum of two idempotents and by de Seguins Pazzis's results \cite{de} on decomposing every matrix over a field of positive characteristic as a sum of idempotent matrices, we address decomposing every matrix over a commutative ring as a sum of three idempotent matrices and, respectively, as a sum of three involutive matrices., Comment: 14 pages. A ring $R$ is a UU ring if every unit is unipotent, or equivalently if every unit is a sum of a nilpotent and an idempotent that commute. These rings have been investigated in C\u{a}lug\u{a}reanu \cite{C} and in Danchev and Lam \cite{DL}. In this paper, two generalizations of UU rings are discussed. We study rings for which every unit is a sum of a nilpotent and an idempotent, and rings for which every unit is a sum of a nilpotent and two idempotents that commute with one another.

{Generalizing the notion of nil cleanness from \cite{D13}, in parallel to \cite{DM14}, we define the concept of {\it weak nil cleanness} for an arbitrary ring. Its comprehensive study in different ways is provided as well. A decomposition theorem of a weakly nil-clean ring is obtained. It is completely characterized when an abelian ring is {\it weakly nil-clean}.} It is also completely determined when a matrix ring over a division ring is weakly nil-clean., Comment: Comments are welcome

A ring $R$ is called strongly clean if every element of $R$ is the sum of a unit and an idempotent that commute with each other. A recent result of Borooah, Diesl and Dorsey \cite{BDD05a} completely characterized the commutative local rings $R$ for which ${\mathbb M}_n(R)$ is strongly clean. For a general local ring $R$ and $n>1$, however, it is unknown when the matrix ring ${\mathbb M}_n(R)$ is strongly clean. Here we completely determine the local rings $R$ for which ${\mathbb M}_2(R)$ is strongly clean., Comment: 12 pages, to appear in Journal of Algebra
