Gene therapy is capable of efficiently regulating the expression of abnormal genes in diseased tissues and expected to be a therapeutic option for refractory diseases. However, unidirectional targeting gene therapy is always desired at the tissue interface. In this study, inspired by the principle that like charges repulse each other, a positively charged micro-nano electrospun fibrous membrane with dual-layer structure was developed by electrospinning technology to achieve unidirectional delivery of siRNA-loaded cationic nanocarriers, thus realizing unidirectional gene therapy at the tendon-paratenon interface. Under the charge repulsion of positively charged layer, more cationic COX-2 siRNA nanocarriers were enriched in peritendinous tissue, which not only improved the bioavailability of the gene drug to prevent the peritendinous adhesion formation, but also avoided adverse effects on the fragile endogenous healing of tendon itself. In summary, this study provides an innovative strategy for unidirectional targeting gene therapy of tissue interface diseases by utilizing charge repulsion to facilitate unidirectional delivery of gene drugs.

To investigate the interaction of the bolt-reinforced rock and the surface support, an analytical model of the convergence-confinement type is proposed, considering the sequential installation of the fully grouted rockbolts and the surface support. The rock mass is assumed to be elastic-brittle-plastic material, obeying the linear Mohr-Coulomb criterion or the non-linear Hoek-Brown criterion. According to the strain states of the tunnel wall at bolt and surface support installation and the relative magnitude between the bolt length and the plastic depth during the whole process, six cases are categorized upon solving the problem. Each case is divided into three stages due to the different effects of the active rockbolts and the passive surface support. The fictitious pressure is introduced to quantify the three-dimensional (3D) effect of the tunnel face, and thus, the actual physical location along the tunnel axis of the analytical section can be considered. By using the bolt-rock strain compatibility and the rock-surface support displacement compatibility conditions, the solutions of longitudinal tunnel displacement and the reaction pressure of surface support along the tunnel axis are obtained. The proposed analytical solutions are validated by a series of 3D numerical simulations. Extensive parametric studies are conducted to examine the effect of the typical parameters of rockbolts and surface support on the tunnel displacement and the reaction pressure of the surface support under different rock conditions. The results show that the rockbolts are more effective in controlling the tunnel displacement than the surface support, which should be installed as soon as possible with a suitable length. For tunnels excavated in weak rocks or with restricted displacement control requirements, the surface support should also be installed or closed timely with a certain stiffness. The proposed method provides a convenient alternative approach for the optimization of rockbolts and surface support at the preliminary stage of tunnel design.

Abstract Multiferroic materials, which simultaneously exhibit ferroelectricity and magnetism, have attracted substantial attention due to their fascinating physical properties and potential technological applications. With the trends towards device miniaturization, there is an increasing demand for the persistence of multiferroicity in single-layer materials at elevated temperatures. Here, we report high-temperature multiferroicity in single-layer CuCrSe2, which hosts room-temperature ferroelectricity and 120 K ferromagnetism. Notably, the ferromagnetic coupling in single-layer CuCrSe2 is enhanced by the ferroelectricity-induced orbital shift of Cr atoms, which is distinct from both types I and II multiferroicity. These findings are supported by a combination of second-harmonic generation, piezo-response force microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, magnetic, and Hall measurements. Our research provides not only an exemplary platform for delving into intrinsic magnetoelectric interactions at the single-layer limit but also sheds light on potential development of electronic and spintronic devices utilizing two-dimensional multiferroics.

Drought has a significant impact on crop growth and productivity, highlighting the critical need for precise and timely soil moisture estimation to mitigate agricultural losses. This study focuses on soil moisture retrieval in northern Hebei Province during July 2012, utilizing eight widely employed remote sensing drought indices derived from MODIS satellite data. These indices were cross-referenced with measured soil moisture levels for analysis. Based on their correlation coefficients, a composite remote sensing drought index set comprising six indices was identified. Furthermore, a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) was employed to estimate soil relative humidity. The accuracy evaluation of the soil moisture estimation model, which integrates multiple remote sensing drought indices and the RBFNN, demonstrated clear superiority over models relying on single drought indices. The model achieved an average estimation accuracy of 87.54 % for soil relative humidity at a depth of 10 cm (SM10) and 87.36 % for a 20 cm depth (SM20). The root mean square errors (RMSE) for the test sets were 0.093 and 0.092, respectively. Validation results for July 2013 indicated that the inversion accurately reflected the actual soil moisture conditions, effectively capturing dynamic moisture changes. These results fully verify the reliability and practicability of the model. These findings introduce a novel approach to local agricultural soil moisture estimation, with significant implications for enhancing agricultural water resource management and decision-making processes.

Abstract The applications of self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) for lasers and single photon sources strongly rely on their density and quality. Establishing the process parameters in molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for a specific density of QDs is a multidimensional optimization challenge, usually addressed through time-consuming and iterative trial-and-error. Here, we report a real-time feedback control method to realize the growth of QDs with arbitrary density, which is fully automated and intelligent. We develop a machine learning (ML) model named 3D ResNet 50 trained using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) videos as input instead of static images and providing real-time feedback on surface morphologies for process control. As a result, we demonstrate that ML from previous growth could predict the post-growth density of QDs, by successfully tuning the QD densities in near-real time from 1.5 × 1010 cm−2 down to 3.8 × 108 cm−2 or up to 1.4 × 1011 cm−2. Compared to traditional methods, our approach can dramatically expedite the optimization process and improve the reproducibility of MBE. The concepts and methodologies proved feasible in this work are promising to be applied to a variety of material growth processes, which will revolutionize semiconductor manufacturing for optoelectronic and microelectronic industries.

The echelon utilization of retired lithium-ion battery with remaining capacity of 80%, is considered as one of the most promising ways to reduce battery cost by extending their service life. The accurate state of charge (SOC) estimation for retired lithium-ion batteries is of great significance for less-stressful demanding applications. The H-infinity filter (HIF) is widely used to identify the battery model parameters and correspondingly to estimate the SOC online assisted with the Thevenin model. But the estimation accuracy cannot be ensured due to the overly simple algorithm structure. In this paper, H-infinity particle filter (HIPF) is proposed to further improve the SOC estimation accuracy. It is a particle filter (PF) improved by HIF and can suppress the particle depletion during the execution of the standard particle filter. HIPF estimated the SOC after the weights of particles were compromised. The joint estimation of model parameters by HIF and the SOC by HIPF was simulated to verify the model accuracy. In the experiment, the retired lithium–iron phosphate battery in BAIC EV150 vehicle was tested under FUDS cycle and DST cycle. The verification result shows that the mean error of the estimated SOC by HIPF is 0.63% in FUDS cycle and 0.59% in DST cycle. And in FUDS cycle and DST cycle, respectively, the proposed method’s SOC estimation accuracy was increased by 65% and 63% compared with when particle weights were not compromised.

This paper proposes a novel finger-individuating exoskeleton system with a non-contact leader–follower control strategy that effectively combines motion functionality and individual adaptability. Our solution comprises the following two interactive components: the leader side and the follower side. The leader side processes joint angle information from the healthy hand during motion via a Leap Motion Controller as the system input, providing more flexible and active operations owing to the non-contact manner. Then, as the follower side, the exoskeleton is driven to assist the user’s hand for rehabilitation training according to the input. The exoskeleton mechanism is designed as a universal module that can adapt to various digit sizes and weighs only 40 g. Additionally, the current motion of the exoskeleton is fed back to the system in real time, forming a closed loop to ensure control accuracy. Finally, four experiments validate the design effectiveness and motion performance of the proposed exoskeleton system. The experimental results indicate that our prototype can provide an average force of about 16.5 N for the whole hand during flexing, and the success rate reaches 82.03% in grasping tasks. Importantly, the proposed prototype holds promise for improving rehabilitation outcomes, offering diverse options for different stroke stages or application scenarios.

The direct growth of III–V semiconductors on silicon holds tremendous potential for photonics applications. However, the inherent differences in their properties lead to defects in the epitaxial layer, including threading dislocations (TDs), antiphase boundaries (APBs), and thermal cracks, significantly impacting device performance. Current processes struggle to suppress these defects simultaneously, necessitating the development of methods to inhibit TDs and APBs in a thin buffer on silicon. This study introduces a GaSb buffer layer during GaAs epitaxy on a silicon (001) substrate. This approach successfully suppresses defect formation by promoting the formation of interfacial misfit dislocation arrays at both the AlSb/Si and GaAs/GaSb interfaces. The resulting GaAs layer exhibits a step-flow surface with a rough mean square of ∼3.8 nm and a full width at half maximum of 158 arcsec. Remarkably, the growth is achieved without any observable interfacial intermixing. Building on this platform, InAs/GaAs quantum dots are grown with a density of 3.8 × 1010 cm−2, emitting at a wavelength of 1288 nm. This breakthrough holds immense promise for developing high-quality GaAs films with reduced defect densities on silicon for O band lasers, laying the foundation for the mass production of silicon-based integrated circuits.

Rock load on lining structures increases over time for tunnels buried in rheological rock, and in addition deterioration of primary lining is common due to its structural characteristics and service environment attack, where these delayed features affect the mechanical response of tunnels. However, accounting for these delayed features in long-term stability assessment of tunnel structures is complex and has not attracted enough attention. In this paper, an analytical approach is proposed for investigating long-term mechanical response of tunnel structures in rheological rock influenced by degradation of primary lining. For this purpose, degradation of primary lining, characterized by decreasing concrete stiffness over time, is quantitatively described by an exponential model. The rheological characteristic of surrounding rock is simulated by the Burgers model. The time-varying solutions for rock deformation and support pressure are obtained by considering the coordinated interaction between surrounding rock and linings, and their correctness is verified by comparing them with numerical results. The results revealed that the pressure imposed on linings due to the rheological behavior of surrounding rock increases over time. As the primary lining degrades, the rheological load is transferred from primary lining to secondary lining, leading to increasing pressure on secondary lining; and a faster degradation rate of primary lining leads to greater pressure on secondary lining. Therefore, the primary lining should not be overlooked in long-term safety assessment of operation tunnels because of its role in bearing and transmitting load. Finally, the tunnel's design and operational maintenance strategy are discussed when the delay effects of surrounding rock and lining are taken into account.

Abstract Violet phosphorus (VP), the most stable phosphorus allotrope, is a van der Waals semiconductor that can be used to construct p-type nanodevices. Recently, high-quality VP crystals have been synthesized while a deep insight into their excitonic properties and bandgap tailoring approaches, which are crucial for their optoelectronic device applications, is still lacking. Here, we study the optical properties of ultrathin VP by second harmonic generation, photoluminescence, and optical absorption spectroscopy. We observed strong bound exciton emission that is 0.48 eV away from the free exciton emission, which is among the largest in 2D materials. In addition, the bandgaps of VP are highly sensitive to the number of layers and external strain, which provides convenient approaches for bandgap engineering. The strong bound exciton emission and tunable bandgaps make VP a promising material in optoelectronic devices.

The electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (ENRR), driven by renewable electricity and run under ambient conditions, offers a promising sustainable avenue for carbon‐neutral NH3 production. Yet, to efficiently bind and activate the inert N2 remains challenge. Herein, effective and stable electrochemical NH3 synthesis on Sm(OH)3 via enhanced adsorption of hydrogen and dinitrogen by dual integration of sulfur dopants and oxygen vacancies (VO) is reported. The resulting S‐doped lanthanide electrocatalyst attains both a good NH3 yield rate, exceeding 21 μgNH3 h−1 mgcat.−1, and an NH3 faradaic efficiency of over 29% at −0.3 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) in an H‐type cell using a neutral electrolyte, figures of merit that are largely maintained after 2 days of consecutive polarization. Density functional theory calculations show that the adsorption energy barrier of N2 on S‐Sm(OH)3(VO) is greatly lowered by the introduction of VO. In addition, the S sites improve the adsorption of hydrogen produced via the Volmer reaction, which is conducive to the formation of the *N–NH intermediate (i.e., the potential determining step, PDS) on adjacent Sm sites, and thereby significantly promotes the reaction kinetics of ENRR. The PDS free energy for the catalyst is comparable with the values at the peak of the ENRR volcano plots of leading transition metal catalyst surfaces.

Abstract Nutrient stoichiometry (e.g., nitrate + nitrite to soluble reactive phosphorus, refer to N + N/SRP, N/P hereafter) governs growth, competition and niche partitioning of phytoplankton in the illuminated oceans. The N/P, however, varies widely across the ocean and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we report direct observations of significant variations in N/P in response to different life stages of two cyclonic eddies observed in the western South China Sea. High N/P (19.1 ± 6.9) values were observed around the nitracline in a mature-stage eddy, whereas a decay-stage eddy was characterized with low N/P (14.4 ± 4.1). The elevated N/P ratios accompanied by enriched fucoxanthin (pigment for diatom) and biogenic silica around the nitracline suggest that eddy pumping enhanced the growth of diatom which preferentially uptakes P relative to N in the mature stage of the eddy. Such high N/P ratios in the upper ocean could be reproduced if diatom uptake ratio was set between 10 and 16 in a data constrained numerical model. The preferential P uptake by enhanced diatom growth might reduce the P supply to the surface ocean, which is critical for N2-fixers. The transient changes in nutrient stoichiometry associated within the life cycle of cyclonic eddies also challenges the parameterization of physical–biogeochemical models with fixed phytoplankton uptake stoichiometry ratios, which could lead to bias of the model output for phytoplankton dynamics in oligotrophic ocean, where eddies frequently occur.

In the design of prosthetic hand fingers, achieving human-like movement while meeting anthropomorphic demands such as appearance, size, and lightweight is quite challenging. Human finger movement involves two distinct motion characters during natural reach-and-grasp tasks: consistency in the reaching stage and adaptability in the grasping stage. The former one enhances grasp stability and reduces control complexity; the latter one promotes the adaptability of finger to various objects. However, conventional tendon-driven prosthetic finger designs typically incorporate bulky actuation modules or complex tendon routes to reconcile the consistency and adaptability. In contrast, we propose a novel friction clutch consisting of a single tendon and slider, which is simple and compact enough to be configurated within the metacarpal bone. Through tactfully exploiting the friction force to balance the gravity effect on each phalanx during finger motion, this design effectively combines both consistency and adaptability. As a result, the prosthetic finger can maintain consistent motion unaffected by any spatial posture during reaching, execute adaptive motion during grasping, and automatically switch between them, resulting in human-like reach-and-grasp movements. Additionally, the proposed finger achieves a highly anthropomorphic design, weighing only 18.9 g and possessing the same size as an adult’s middle finger. Finally, a series of experiments validate the theoretical effectiveness and motion performance of the proposed design. Remarkably, the mechanical principle of the proposed friction clutch is beneficial to achieve highly anthropomorphic design, providing not only a new strategy to prosthetic hand design but also great potential in hand rehabilitation.

Abstract Heterotopic ossification (HO) represents an unwanted ossific wound healing response to the soft tissue injury which caused catastrophic limb dysfunction. Recent studies established the involvement of inflammation and cellular senescence in the tissue healing process, though their role in HO still remained to be clarified. Here, a novel crosstalk where the pyroptotic macrophages aroused tendon‐derived stem cells (TDSCs) senescence is revealed to encourage osteogenic healing during trauma‐induced HO formation. Macrophage pyroptosis blockade reduces the senescent cell burden and HO formation in NLRP3 knockout mice. Pyroptosis‐driven IL‐1β and extracellular vesicles (EVs) secretion from macrophages are determined to motivate TDSCs senescence and resultant osteogenesis. Mechanistically, pyroptosis in macrophages enhances the exosomal release of high mobility group protein 1 (HMGB1), which directly bounds TLR9 in TDSCs to trigger morbid signaling. NF‐κB signaling is confirmed to be the converging downstream pathway of TDSCs in response to HMGB1‐containing EVs and IL‐1β. This study adds insights into aberrant regeneration‐based theory for HO formation and boosts therapeutic strategy development.

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model is a prototypical model of topological states, initially proposed to describe spinless electrons on a one-dimensional (1D) dimerized lattice. Here, the authors realize a 2D SSH model in a rectangular lattice of silicon atoms on a silver substrate, observing gapped Dirac cones by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Due to local overactive inflammatory response and impaired angiogenesis, current treatments for diabetic wounds remain unsatisfactory. M2 macrophage-derived exosomes (MEs) have shown considerable potential in biomedical applications, especially since they have anti-inflammatory properties that modulate macrophage phenotypes. However, exosome-based strategies still have limitations, such as short half-lives and instability. Herein, we develop a double-layer microneedle-based wound dressing system (MEs@PMN) by encapsulating MEs in the needle tips and polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles in backing layer to simultaneously suppress inflammation and improve angiogenesis at the wound site. In vitro, released MEs increased macrophage polarization towards the M2 phenotype. In addition, mild heat (40 ​°C) generated by the photosensitive PMN backing layer contributed to improved angiogenesis. More importantly, MEs@PMN also showed promising effects in diabetic rats. The uncontrolled inflammatory response at the wound site was inhibited by MEs@PMN during a 14-day period; in addition, MEs and the photothermal effects produced by PMN provided a combined proangiogenic effect by improving the expression of CD31 and vWF. Collectively, this study provides a simple and efficient cell-free strategy for suppressing inflammation and promoting vascular regeneration to treat diabetic wounds.

Cereal and oil video surveillance data play a vital role in food traceability, which not only helps to ensure the quality and safety of food, but also helps to improve the efficiency and transparency of the supply chain. Traditional video surveillance systems mainly adopt a centralized storage mode, which is characterized by the deployment of multiple monitoring nodes and a large amount of data storage. It is difficult to guarantee the data security, and there is an urgent need for a solution that can achieve the safe and efficient storage of cereal and oil video surveillance data. This study proposes a blockchain-based abnormal data storage model for cereal and oil video surveillance. The model introduces a deep learning algorithm to process the cereal and oil video surveillance data, obtaining images with abnormal behavior from the monitoring data. The data are stored on a blockchain after hash operation, and InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is used as a secondary database to store video data and alleviate the storage pressure on the blockchain. The experimental results show that the model achieves the safe and efficient storage of cereal and oil video surveillance data, providing strong support for the sustainable development of the cereal and oil industry.

The Sichuan–Tibet railway construction has received significant attention from both China and abroad. The new section from Ya’an to Nyingchi is about 1018.6 km long, including 69 tunnels with a total length of 841.7 km. The longest tunnel (Yigong tunnel) is 42.4 km long. The successful construction of the Sichuan–Tibet railway depends largely on tunnel construction. Due to the complex conditions, tunnel construction for the Sichuan–Tibet railway poses great challenges to the research community. This paper aims to illustrate the necessity of interdisciplinary and joint research to solve problems associated with tunnel construction that will be encountered in the immediate future and facilitate the communication and exchange of ideas between disciplines. To this end, based on a systematic analysis of the available data related to Sichuan–Tibet railway tunnels, six major aspects of the geology, environment, and engineering conditions are identified. Next, based on the engineering responses from the Sichuan–Tibet railway tunnels, potential technical problems and risk characteristics are predicted and evaluated. Further, six key scientific issues are identified and discussed based on a coupled multi-layer analysis of essential tunnel engineering issues. Finally, research directions, technical ideas, and research methods that should be carried out for this project are proposed.

An intraosseous epidermoid cyst at the distal phalanx of the index finger is extremely rare. These cysts are asymptomatic unless ruptured, severely infected, or transformed into malignant squamous cell carcinoma. We present a case of a single clubbing finger in an adult diagnosed with an intraosseous epidermoid cyst in the distal phalanx of the left index finger with no history of pulmonary or cardiovascular diseases. Preoperative MRI showed an expansile lytic lesion with a sclerotic margin. Histopathological examination indicates that there is keratinous cell debris in the cyst with a wall of stratified squamous epithelium, which was the key to the correct diagnosis of an intraosseous epidermoid cyst. Written informed consent was obtained from the patient for publication of this case report and any accompanying images.

Abstract Reconstructing cortical surfaces from structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a prerequisite for surface-based functional and anatomical image analyses. Conventional algorithms for cortical surface reconstruction are computationally inefficient and typically take several hours for each subject, causing a bottleneck in applications when a fast turnaround time is needed. To address this challenge, we propose a fast cortical surface reconstruction (FastCSR) pipeline by leveraging deep machine learning. We trained our model to learn an implicit representation of the cortical surface in volumetric space, termed the “level set representation”. A fast volumetric topology correction method and a topology-preserving surface mesh extraction procedure were employed to reconstruct the cortical surface based on the level set representation. Using 1-mm isotropic T1-weighted images, the FastCSR pipeline was able to reconstruct a subject’s cortical surfaces within 5 min with comparable surface quality, which is approximately 47 times faster than the traditional FreeSurfer pipeline. The advantage of FastCSR becomes even more apparent when processing high-resolution images. Importantly, the model demonstrated good generalizability in previously unseen data and showed high test–retest reliability in cortical morphometrics and anatomical parcellations. Finally, FastCSR was robust to images with compromised quality or with distortions caused by lesions. This fast and robust pipeline for cortical surface reconstruction may facilitate large-scale neuroimaging studies and has potential in clinical applications wherein brain images may be compromised.

Abstract Electrochemical CO2 transformation to high‐value ethylene (C2H4) at high currents and efficiencies is desired and yet remains a grand challenge. We show for the first time that coupling single Sb atoms and oxygen vacancies of CuO enable synergistic electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to C2H4 at low overpotentials. Highly dispersed Sb atoms occupying metal substitutional sites of CuO are synthesized under mild conditions. The overall CO2 reduction faradaic efficiency (FE) reaches 89.3 ± 1.1% with an FE toward C2H4 exceeding 58.4% at a high‐current density of 500 mA/cm2. Addition of the p‐block metal is found to induce transformation of CuO from flakes to nanoribbons rich in nanoholes and oxygen vacancies, greatly enhancing CO2 adsorption and activation while suppressing hydrogen evolution. Further density functional theory calculations with in situ X‐ray diffraction reveal that combining Sb sites and oxygen vacancies prominently lessen the dimerization energy of adsorbed CO intermediate, thus boosting the conversion of CO2 to produce C2H4. This study provides a new perspective for promoting selective C–C coupling for electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Many bridge structural components are subjected to repetitive vehicle load and temperature gradient action. The resulting cyclic tensile stresses within the structures could cause premature fatigue failure of concrete, dramatically impairing structural components’ durability and sustainability. Although substantial knowledge of fatigue properties on low-strength pavement concrete and high-strength structural concrete has been obtained, research on the most widely used normal-grade ordinary concrete in bridge engineering is still ongoing. Therefore, a four-point bending fatigue test of 97 C50 concrete specimens under a constant amplitude sinusoidal wave was conducted in the laboratory, the flexural fatigue behavior of plain and reinforced concrete specimens was studied, and the cyclic deformation evolution of concrete under fatigue loading was obtained. The empirical fatigue S-N equations of concrete with a failure probability p of 0.1~0.5 were derived through statistical analysis of the test results. The fatigue life of the tested specimens exhibited a two-parameter Weibull distribution. In addition to the maximum stress level Smax, the stress ratio R is also a key factor affecting the flexural fatigue life of concrete N. The semi-logarithmic and logarithmic equations were almost identical at the tested stress levels, the latter predicting longer fatigue life for Smax < 0.70. The restraining effect from steel reinforcement slightly lengthened the concrete’s fatigue cracking initiation life. The insight into concrete flexural fatigue properties from this study not only contributes to a better understanding of structural concrete, but also provides a basis for the practical evaluation of concrete or composite bridge decks.

The structure of the grain-and-oil-food-supply chain has the characteristics of complexity, cross-regionality, a long cycle, and numerous participants, making it difficult to maintain the safety of supply. In recent years, some phenomena have emerged in the field of grain procurement and sale, such as topping the new with the old, rotating grains, the pressure of grades and prices, and counterfeit oil food, which have seriously threatened grain-and-oil-food security. Blockchain technology has the advantage of decentralization and non-tampering Therefore, this study analyzes the characteristics of traceability data in the grain-and-oil-food-supply chain, and presents a blockchain-based traceability model for the grain-and-oil-food-supply chain. Firstly, a new method combining blockchain and machine learning is proposed to enhance the authenticity and reliability of blockchain source data by constructing anomalous data-processing models. In addition, a lightweight blockchain-storage method and a data-recovery mechanism are proposed to reduce the pressure on supply-chain-data storage and improve fault tolerance. The results indicate that the average query delay of public data is 0.42 s, the average query delay of private data is 0.88 s, and the average data-recovery delay is 1.2 s. Finally, a blockchain-based grain-and-oil-food-supply-chain traceability system is designed and built using Hyperledger Fabric. Compared with the existing grain-and-oil-food-supply chain, the model constructed achieves multi-source heterogeneous data uploading, lightweight storage, data recovery, and traceability in the supply chain, which are of great significance for ensuring the safety of grain-and-oil food in China.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) powered by renewable electricity is reckoned to provide an effective strategy to alleviate environmental issues and energy crisis, enabling a potential carbon neutral economy. To boost the ECR to fuels and value-added chemicals, the design of highly active and selective catalysts is important. In this study, we demonstrate facile ultrasonication-facilitated synthesis of two-dimensional copper terephthalate for efficient ECR. High faradaic efficiencies (FEs) of up to 72.9% for hydrocarbons are achieved at a mild overpotential in an H-type cell. In particular, the FE for ethylene (C2H4) formation approaches 50.0% at an applied potential of −1.1 V (vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode), outperforming commercial Cu, Cu2O, CuO, Cu(OH)2 and many recently reported Cu-based materials. The C2H4 partial geometric current density is as high as ∼6.0 mA·cm−2. This work offers a simple avenue to developing advanced electrocatalysts for converting CO2 into high-value hydrocarbons.

Background: Lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) is an important enzyme responsible for free cholesterol (FC) esterification, which is critical for high density lipoprotein (HDL) maturation and the completion of the reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) process. Plasma LCAT activity and concentration showed various patterns under different physiological and pathological conditions. Research on LCAT has grown rapidly over the past 50 years, but there are no bibliometric studies summarizing this field as a whole. This study aimed to use the bibliometric analysis to demonstrate the trends in LCAT publications, thus offering a brief perspective with regard to future developments in this field.Methods: We used the Web of Science Core Collection to retrieve LCAT-related studies published from 1975 to 2020. The data were further analyzed in the number of studies, the journal which published the most LCAT-related studies, co-authorship network, co-country network, co-institute network, co-reference and the keywords burst by CiteSpace V 5.7.Results: 2584 publications contained 55,311 references were used to analyzed. The number of included articles fluctuated in each year. We found that Journal of lipid research published the most LCAT-related studies. Among all the authors who work on LCAT, they tend to collaborate with a relatively stable group of collaborators to generate several major authors clusters which Albers, J. published the most studies (n = 53). The United States of America contributed the greatest proportion (n = 1036) of LCAT-related studies. The LCAT-related studies have been focused on the vascular disease, lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase reaction, phospholipid, cholesterol efflux, chronic kidney disease, milk fever, nephrotic syndrome, platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase, reconstituted lpa-i, reverse cholesterol transport. Four main research frontiers in terms of burst strength for LCAT-related studies including “transgenic mice”, “oxidative stress”, “risk”, and “cholesterol metabolism “need more attention.Conclusion: This is the first study that demonstrated the trends and future development in LCAT publications. Further studies should focus on the accurate metabolic process of LCAT dependent or independent of RCT using metabolic marker tracking techniques. It was also well worth to further studying the possibility that LCAT may qualify as a biomarker for risk prediction and clinical treatment.

Abstract Many challenges in the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia have been recognized with most effort focused on delineating false positives resulting from unidentified sources of nitrogen. However, the influence of oxidizing anolytes on the crossover and oxidization of ammonium during the electrolysis reaction remains unexplored. Here it is reported that the use of analytes containing halide ions (Cl− and Br−) can rapidly convert the ammonium into N2, which further intensifies the crossover of ammonium. Moreover, the extent of migration and oxidation of ammonium is found to be closely associated with external factors, such as applied potentials and the concentration of Cl−. These findings demonstrate the profound impact of oxidizing anolytes on the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia. Based on these results, many prior reported ammonia yield rates are calibrated. This work emphasizes the significance of avoiding selection of anolytes that can oxidize ammonium, which is believed to promote further progress in electrochemical nitrogen fixation.

Bone fracture healing is a complex process involving various signaling pathways. It remains an unsolved issue the fast and optimal management of complex or multiple fractures in the field of orthopedics and rehabilitation. Bone fracture healing is largely a four-stage process, including initial hematoma formation, intramembrane ossification, chondrogenesis, and endochondral ossification followed by further bone remodeling. Many studies have reported the involvement of immune cells and cytokines in fracture healing. On the other hand, the Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) family and TNF receptor superfamily (TNFRSF) play a pivotal role in many physiological processes. The functions of the TNF family and TNFRSF in immune processes, tissue homeostasis, and cell differentiation have been extensively studied by many groups, and treatments targeting specific TNFRSF members are in progress. In terms of bone fracture management, it has been discovered that several members of TNFRSF have very distinct functions in different stages of fracture healing, including TNFR1, TNFR2, and receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B (RANK) pathways. More specifically, TNFR1 is associated with osteoclastogenesis and TNFR2 is associated with osteogenic differentiation, while RANK is in association with bone remodeling. In this review, we will discuss and summarize the involvement of members of TNFRSF including TNFR1, TNFR2, and Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B (RANK) pathways in different stages of fracture healing and bone remodeling and the current treatment trend involving TNFRSF agonists and antagonists.

Photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) to ammonia holds a great promise for substituting the traditional energy-intensive Haber–Bosch process, which entails sunlight as an inexhaustible resource and water as a hydrogen source under mild conditions. Remarkable progress has been achieved regarding the activation and solar conversion of N2 to NH3 with the rapid development of emerging photocatalysts, but it still suffers from low efficiency. A comprehensive review on photocatalysts covering tungsten and related metals as well as their broad ranges of alloys and compounds is lacking. This article aims to summarize recent advances in this regard, focusing on the strategies to enhance the photocatalytic performance of tungsten and related metal semiconductors for the NRR. The fundamentals of solar-to-NH3 photocatalysis, reaction pathways, and NH3 quantification methods are presented, and the concomitant challenges are also revealed. Finally, we cast insights into the future development of sustainable NH3 production, and highlight some potential directions for further research in this vibrant field.

The frequency range of terahertz waves (THz waves) is between 0.1 and 10 THz and they have properties such as low energy, penetration, transients, and spectral fingerprints, which are especially sensitive to water. Terahertz, as a frontier technology, have great potential in interpreting the structure of water molecules and detecting biological water conditions, and the use of terahertz technology for water detection is currently frontier research, which is of great significance. Firstly, this paper introduces the theory of terahertz technology and summarizes the current terahertz systems used for water detection. Secondly, an overview of theoretical approaches, such as the relaxation model and effective medium theory related to water detection, the relationship between water molecular networks and terahertz spectra, and the research progress of the terahertz detection of water content and water distribution visualization, are elaborated. Finally, the challenge and outlook of applications related to the terahertz wave detection of water are discussed. The purpose of this paper is to explore the research domains on water and its related applications using terahertz technology, as well as provide a reference for innovative applications of terahertz technology in moisture detection.

Inorganic silicate impregnation-modified fast-growing wood shows improved mechanical properties and thermal stability, but inorganic silicate agent loss and moisture absorption affect its processability. This study proposes a method to improve the impregnating agent loss and modified wood moisture absorption of poplar wood modified by using an acrylic acid emulsion/sodium silicate composite. The acrylic acid emulsion coated the sodium silicate and cell wall surfaces with a cured film that blocked water molecules from entering the modified wood. The acrylic acid emulsion adhered to the wood and sodium silicate, thus reducing impregnating agent loss. The addition of the acrylic acid emulsion maintained the excellent mechanical properties of sodium silicate-modified poplar wood and greatly improved its bending strength. The water absorption and moisture swelling rate were significantly decreased, and the dimensional stability of modified poplar wood was more than 50% higher than that of unmodified poplar wood. The thermogravimetric analysis (TG)results showed that the addition of organic components reduced the heat resistance of modified wood, but the thermal stability was still higher than unmodified wood. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that acrylic esters in acrylic acid emulsion reacted with hydroxyl groups on sodium silicate and wood to form covalent bonds that improved the impregnating agent’s resistance to loss and reduced the moisture absorption of the wood. The modified poplar wood showed better dimensional stability and water resistance.

The metabolism of bone tumors is extraordinarily complex and involves many signaling pathways and processes, including the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling pathway, which consists of TNF factors and the TNF receptors that belong to the TNF receptor superfamily (TNFRSF). It is appreciated that signaling events and pathways involving TNFRSF components are essential in coordinating the functions of multiple cell types that act as a host defense network against pathogens and malignant cells, the implications of TNFRSF-related signaling pathways on bone tumor metabolism remain to be summarized, which is one of the significant obstacles to the application of TNF-related treatment modalities in the domain of bone oncology. This review will discuss and summarize the anti-tumor properties of important TNFRSF components concerning osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and Ewing sarcoma.

Abstract Background The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling pathway plays an essential role in maintaining homeostasis in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). However, the specific mechanism of non-SMAD and classical SMAD signaling interactions is still unclear, which needs to be further explored. Methods In ATDC5 cells, USP15 overexpression and knockout were performed using the transfected lentivirus USP15 and Crispr/Cas9. Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining were used to test p-SMAD2 and cartilage phenotype-related molecular markers. In rat OA models, immunohistochemistry, hematoxylin and eosin (HE)/Safranin-O fast green staining, and histology were used to examine the regulatory activity of USP15 in TGF-β/SMAD2 signaling and the cartilage phenotype. Then, ERK2 overexpression and knockout were performed. The expressions of USP15, p-SMAD2, and the cartilage phenotype were evaluated in vitro and in vivo. To address whether USP15 is required for ERK2 and TGF-β/SMAD2 signaling, we performed rescue experiments in vitro and in vivo. Immunoprecipitation and deubiquitination assays were used to examine whether USP15 could bind to ERK2 and affect the deubiquitination of ERK2. Finally, whether USP15 regulates the level of p-ERK1/2 was evaluated by western blotting, immunofluorescence staining, and immunohistochemistry in vitro and in vivo. Results Our results indicated that USP15 stimulated TGF-β/SMAD2 signaling and the cartilage phenotype. Moreover, ERK2 required USP15 to influence TGF-β/SMAD2 signaling for regulating the cartilage phenotype in vivo and in vitro. And USP15 can form a complex with ERK2 to regulate ubiquitination of ERK2. Interestingly, USP15 did not regulate the stability of ERK2 but increased the level of p-ERK1/2 to further enhance the TGF-β/SMAD2 signaling pathway. Conclusions Taken together, our study revealed positive feedback regulation between USP15 and ERK2, which played a critical role in TGF-β/SMAD2 signaling to inhibit OA progression. Therefore, this specific mechanism can guide the clinical treatment of OA.

The timely and accurate identification of stripe rust and leaf rust is essential in effective disease control and the safe production of wheat worldwide. To investigate methods for identifying the two diseases on different wheat varieties based on image processing technology, single-leaf images of the diseases on different wheat varieties, acquired under field and laboratory environmental conditions, were processed. After image scaling, median filtering, morphological reconstruction, and lesion segmentation on the images, 140 color, texture, and shape features were extracted from the lesion images; then, feature selections were conducted using methods including ReliefF, 1R, correlation-based feature selection, and principal components analysis combined with support vector machine (SVM), back propagation neural network (BPNN), and random forest (RF), respectively. For the individual-variety disease identification SVM, BPNN, and RF models built with the optimal feature combinations, the identification accuracies of the training sets and the testing sets on the same individual varieties acquired under the same image acquisition conditions as the training sets used for modeling were 87.18–100.00%, but most of the identification accuracies of the testing sets for other individual varieties were low. For the multi-variety disease identification SVM, BPNN, and RF models built with the merged optimal feature combinations based on the multi-variety disease images acquired under field and laboratory environmental conditions, identification accuracies in the range of 82.05–100.00% were achieved on the training set, the corresponding multi-variety disease image testing set, and all the individual-variety disease image testing sets. The results indicated that the identification of images of stripe rust and leaf rust could be greatly affected by wheat varieties, but satisfactory identification performances could be achieved by building multi-variety disease identification models based on disease images from multiple varieties under different environments. This study provides an effective method for the accurate identification of stripe rust and leaf rust and could be a useful reference for the automatic identification of other plant diseases.

The evaluation of the roof collapse in tunnels or cavities remains one of the most complex issues in geotechnical engineering. Taking the detaching surface of the tunnel roof collapse as an orthotropic weak interlayer, an analytical approach for determining the limit collapse range considering the arch effect of the tunnel is presented in this paper by the variation calculus. A discontinuity criterion moving from the anisotropic criterion proposed by the present authors is applied to the orthotropic interlayer. The phenomenon of sharp points in collapse blocks is further analyzed. Based on the proposed approach, illustrated examples are analyzed to investigate the effect of the strength parameters and the consideration of the collapse cusp, which show different influence laws on the range of collapse blocks. Those interesting conclusions can provide guidance for the prediction of the collapse mechanism of the tunnel.

Demand for ammonia continues to increase to sustain the growing global population. The direct electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) powered by renewable electricity offers a promising carbon-neutral and sustainable strategy for manufacturing NH3, yet achieving this remains a grand challenge. Here, we report a synergistic strategy to promote ambient NRR for ammonia production by tuning the Te vacancies (VTe) and surface hydrophobicity of two-dimensional TaTe2 nanosheets. Remarkable NH3 faradic efficiency of up to 32.2% is attained at a mild overpotential, which is largely maintained even after 100 h of consecutive electrolysis. Isotopic labeling validates that the N atoms of formed NH4+ originate from N2. In situ X-ray diffraction indicates preservation of the crystalline structure of TaTe2 during NRR. Further density functional theory calculations reveal that the potential-determining step (PDS) is ∗NH2 + (H+ + e–) → NH3 on VTe-TaTe2 compared with that of ∗ + N2 + (H+ + e–) → ∗N–NH on TaTe2. We identify that the edge plane of TaTe2 and VTe serve as the main active sites for NRR. The free energy change at PDS on VTe-TaTe2 is comparable with the values at the top of the NRR volcano plots on various transition metal surfaces. Osteoporosis bone defect is a refractory orthopaedic disease which characterized by impaired bone quality and bone regeneration capacity. Current therapies, including antiosteoporosis drugs and artificial bone grafts, are not always satisfactory. Herein, a strontium-substituted calcium phosphate silicate bioactive ceramic (Sr-CPS) was fabricated. In the present study, the extracts of Sr-CPS were prepared for in vitro study and Sr-CPS scaffolds were used for in vivo study. The cytocompatibility, osteogenic and osteoclastogenic properties of Sr-CPS extracts were characterized in comparison to CPS. Molecular mechanisms were also evaluated by Western blot. Sr-CPS extracts were found to promote osteogenesis by upregulating Wnt/β-catenin signal pathways and inhibit osteoclastogenesis through downregulating NF-κB signal pathway. In vivo, micro-CT, histological and histomorphometric observation were conducted after 8 weeks of implantation to evaluate the bone formation using calvarial defects model in ovariectomized rats. Compared with CPS, Sr-CPS significantly promoted critical sized ovariectomy (OVX) calvarial defects healing. Among all the samples, Sr-10 showed the best performance due to a perfect match of bone formation and scaffold degradation rates. Overall, the present study demonstrated that Sr-CPS ceramic can dually modulate both bone formation and resorption, which might be a promising candidate for the reconstruction of osteoporotic bone defect.

Abstract Background The survival rates of patients with metastatic osteosarcoma are poor, and the prognosis is closely related to the choice of treatment, especially surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the survival outcomes of patients with metastatic osteosarcoma undergoing regional dissections. Methods We collected data on patients with metastatic osteosarcoma between 2004 and 2014 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Kaplan–Meier curves were used to compare overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS), while univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to evaluate outcomes. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to minimize the effects of confounding factors. Results The SEER database had records of 2768 patients diagnosed with osteosarcoma, of whom 398 were included in our study. Of the included patients, 116 (29.15%) underwent regional dissections, while 282 (70.85%) underwent non-regional dissections. The univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses, prior to PSM, showed that OS (hazard ratio (HR): 0.34, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.26–0.44, P

Backfilling a giant karst cave with grouted engineering spoil as a new countermeasure for tunnels through giant karsts cave is studied in this paper. The numerical models of sections with different distribution characteristics of karst cave and tunnels are established for studying the deformation of surrounding rock and mechanical response of tunnel lining with and without grouting, respectively. The results illustrate that the countermeasure scheme is feasible. In order to ensure that the countermeasure can perform as expected effect, the inadequate grouting sections are recognized and verified using field grouting records and single-hole grouting quantity analysis. Finally, the application effect of the countermeasure scheme is evaluated by field monitoring of horizontal convergence. The result shows that the grouting can reduce the deformation of surrounding rock at the side wall and bottom of tunnel by 70–80% and reduce the stress redistribution range of surrounding rock. However, due to the great differences between the limestone and engineering spoil, the grouting cannot change the share of distribution of load between corresponding region surrounding rock, the max principle stress of tunnel lining is almost identical with and without grouting. The grouting reinforced engineering spoil backfill the giant karst cave can meet the requirement of excavation stability. The inadequate grouting sections caused by groundwater and through crack are identified effectively, and are verified by coring observation method. The horizontal convergence of the tunnel is less than 30 mm, and the stable state can be reached within 20 days, which demonstrate that the remarkable engineering results is achieved. The countermeasure of giant karst cave can provide a useful reference for similar project.

One of the main responses of the ocean to typhoons is the generation of near-inertial waves (NIWs), whose intrinsic frequency is close to the local inertial frequency. Based on the mooring observations, we carefully investigated the spatial–temporal variations in NIWs in the northern South China Sea (SCS) after Typhoon “Haima,” which passed through the northern SCS from October 20 to 21, 2016, with its track parallel to the mooring array on its northeast side. Moorings in different locations responded differently to this typhoon, with stronger NIWs found on the continental slope to the shelf break and relatively weak NIWs found on the shallow continental shelf. Strong NIWs appeared twice within a short period and showed different characteristics and frequencies. The first NIWs were generated locally with blue-shifted (super-inertial) frequencies. These initial NIWs were dominated by the first three baroclinic modes and rapidly weakened due to their propagation away and local dissipation. However, the second NIWs mainly consisted of higher baroclinic modes with red-shifted (sub-inertial) frequencies. The analysis of the mean background flow revealed that these red-shifted NIWs were excited at low latitudes, and subsequently advected by the poleward background flow to moorings whose latitudes were higher than their critical latitudes. Higher-mode (n > 3) NIWs were more easily carried away by mean background flow, and, at the same time, high-mode NIWs propagated downward to the subsurface layer, leading to the significant elevation of velocity shear therein. Given these findings, the mean background flow may provide an important route to redistributing the energy of the upper ocean imported from typhoons.

In this research, the features of the Kuroshio Current in 2019 were studied based on the observations of 29 self-developed surface current experiment drifters deployed in the western Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea. The Kuroshio flow pattern and velocity magnitude observed in 2019 were largely consistent with the climatology based on the historical drifter dataset, but they still exhibited distinctive characteristics. The intrusion of the Kuroshio into the South China Sea in the spring was observed by a group of drifters crossing the Luzon Strait from east to west, which is a notable departure from the non-intrusion pattern noted to occur in the spring in most of the historical records. A strong intrusion of the Kuroshio into the East China Sea was also observed, taking an anti-cyclonic turn in the northeast of Taiwan Island. Both the drifter trajectories and altimeter-derived dynamical topography captured the large meander pattern of the Kuroshio south of Japan in 2019, with the flow path having a maximum offshore distance of 470 km. In addition, Lagrangian statistics (lateral diffusivity, integral time scale, and integral space scale) were estimated for four selected regions with adequate drifter samplings. The lateral diffusivity had large values along the Kuroshio segment in the East China Sea and small values on the continental shelf of the East China Sea. The integral time scales for the four regions ranged from 0.8 to 3.7 days, with a corresponding integral space scale of 19~128 km.

Abstract Background Evidence is accumulating to characterise the key differences between systemic sclerosis (SSc) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), which are similar but distinct systemic autoimmune diseases. However, the differences at the genetic level are not yet clear. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to identify key differential genes between patients with SSc and RA. Methods The Gene Expression Omnibus database was used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between SSc and RA biopsies. The DEGs were then functionally annotated using Gene Ontology (GO) terms and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways with the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID) tools. A protein–protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed with Cytoscape software. The Molecular Complex Detection (MCODE) plugin was also used to evaluate the biological importance of the constructed gene modules. Results A total of 13,556 DEGs were identified between the five SSc patients and seven RA patients, including 13,465 up-regulated genes and 91 down-regulated genes. Interestingly, the most significantly enriched GO terms of up- and down-regulated genes were related to extracellular involvement and immune activity, respectively, and the top six highly enriched KEGG pathways were related to the same processes. In the PPI network, the top 10 hub nodes and top four modules harboured the most relevant genes contributing to the differences between SSc and RA, including key genes such as IL6, EGF, JUN, FGF2, BMP2, FOS, BMP4, LRRK2, CTNNB1, EP300, CD79, and CXCL13. Conclusions These genes such as IL6, EGF, JUN, FGF2, BMP2, FOS, BMP4, LRRK2, CTNNB1, EP300, CD79, and CXCL13 can serve as new targets for focused research on the distinct molecular pathogenesis of SSc and RA. Furthermore, these genes could serve as potential biomarkers for differential diagnoses or therapeutic targets for treatment.

Abstract Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by impairments in social interactions and communication, restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Several studies report a high prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in autistic individuals. Cumulative evidence reveals that the gut microbiota and its metabolites (especially short-chain fatty acids, SCFAs) play an important role in GI disorders and the pathogenesis of ASD. However, the composition of the gut microbiota and its association with fecal SCFAs and GI symptoms of autistic children remain largely unknown. In the present study, we sequenced the bacterial 16S rRNA gene, detected fecal SCFAs, assessed GI symptoms and analyzed the relationship between the gut microbiome and fecal SCFAs in autistic and neurotypical individuals. The results showed that the compositions of the gut microbiota and SCFAs were altered in ASD individuals. We found lower levels of fecal acetic acid and butyrate and a higher level of fecal valeric acid in ASD subjects. We identified decreased abundances of key butyrate-producing taxa (Ruminococcaceae, Eubacterium, Lachnospiraceae and Erysipelotrichaceae) and an increased abundance of valeric acid associated bacteria (Acidobacteria) among autistic individuals. Constipation was the only GI disorder in ASD children in the present study. We also found enriched Fusobacterium, Barnesiella, Coprobacter and valeric acid-associated bacteria (Actinomycetaceae) and reduced butyrate-producing taxa in constipated autistic subjects. It is suggested that the gut microbiota contributes to fecal SCFAs and constipation in autism. Modulating the gut microbiota, especially butyrate-producing bacteria, could be a promising strategy in the search for alternatives for the treatment of autism spectrum disorder.

Concrete tensile properties usually govern the fatigue cracking of structural components such as bridge decks under repetitive loading. A fatigue life reliability analysis of commonly used ordinary cement concrete is desirable. As fatigue is affected by many interlinked factors whose effect is nonlinear, a unanimous consensus on the quantitative measurement of these factors has not yet been achieved. Benefiting from its unique self-learning ability and strong generalization capability, the Bayesian regularized backpropagation neural network (BR-BPNN) was proposed to predict concrete behavior in tensile fatigue. A total of 432 effective data points were collected from the literature, and an optimal model was determined with various combinations of network parameters. The average relative impact value (ARIV) was constructed to evaluate the correlation between fatigue life and its influencing parameters (maximum stress level Smax, stress ratio R, static strength f, failure probability P). ARIV results were compared with other factor assessment methods (weight equation and multiple linear regression analyses). Using BR-BPNN, S-N curves were obtained for the combinations of R = 0.1, 0.2, 0.5; f = 5, 6, 7 MPa; P = 5%, 50%, 95%. The tensile fatigue results under different testing conditions were finally compared for compatibility. It was concluded that Smax had the most significant negative effect on fatigue life; and the degree of influence of R, P, and f, which positively correlated with fatigue life, decreased successively. ARIV was confirmed as a feasible way to analyze the importance of parameters and could be recommended for future applications. It was found that the predicted logarithmic fatigue life agreed well with the test results and conventional data fitting curves, indicating the reliability of the BR-BPNN model in predicting concrete tensile fatigue behavior. These probabilistic fatigue curves could provide insights into fatigue test program design and fatigue evaluation. Since the overall correlation coefficient between the prediction and experimental results reached 0.99, the experimental results of plain concrete under flexural tension, axial tension, and splitting tension could be combined in future analyses. Besides utilizing the valuable fatigue test data available in the literature, this work provided evidence of the successful application of BR-BPNN on concrete fatigue prediction. Although a more accurate and comprehensive method was derived in the current study, caution should still be exercised when utilizing this method.

Despite advances in neoadjuvant chemotherapy, outcomes for patients with osteosarcoma resistant to first-line chemotherapy have been dismal for decades. There is thus an urgent need to develop novel targeted drugs to effectively treat refractory osteosarcoma. Dysregulation in the PI3K/AKT pathway has been observed during the development of osteosarcoma. Herein, we first evaluated p-AKT (Ser473) expression levels in osteosarcoma tissue using high-throughput tissue microarrays. Then, we demonstrated the role of pictilisib, a novel potent PI3K inhibitor, in osteosarcoma and related osteolysis. Functional studies of pictilisib in osteosarcoma cell lines and bone marrow-derived macrophages were performed in vitro. Patient-derived xenografts and orthotopic mouse models were used to assess the effects of pictilisib in vivo. The results showed that positive p-AKT expression levels after neoadjuvant chemotherapy were significantly associated with tumor cell necrosis rate. Pictilisib effectively inhibited the proliferation of osteosarcoma through G0/G1-S phase cell cycle arrest, and enhanced the sensitivity of osteosarcoma to doxorubicin, although it failed to induce cell apoptosis alone. In addition, pictilisib inhibited differentiation of osteoclasts and bone resorption in vitro and tumor-related osteolysis in vivo via inhibition of the PI3K/AKT/GSK3β and NF-κB pathways. Pictilisib combined with conventional chemotherapy drugs represents a potential treatment strategy to suppress tumor growth and bone destruction in p-AKT-positive patients.

Organic acids are important agents in the alteration of deep reservoirs. It is difficult, however, to assess the impact of organic acid alteration on deep reservoirs because different dissolution processes may occur during diagenesis. This study simulated the dissolution of three different types of reservoir rocks by acetic acid in a closed system and compared the mineral and elemental composition, surface morphology, pore structure, and water chemistry variations of the initial and altered samples. The study demonstrated that both micrite and sucrosic dolostone are strongly dissolved, losing about 20%–30% of their initial rock sample weights. Observation under SEM showed that the limestone dissolved homogenously, whereas the dolostone showed honeycomb-like dissolution. Both carbonate samples showed the development of large voids, including holes and cavities of micrometer scale, but nanopores of various sizes were blocked. In contrast, lithic arkose was heterogeneously altered, losing a weight proportion of about 13% by dissolution of calcite cement. These micrometer-scale microfissures were developed, but those nanometer-scale pores just varied in a narrow range of sizes. The volume increase in all three reservoir types is mainly attributed to the dissolution of carbonate minerals. In deep reservoirs, in situ generated organic acids can enlarge existing cavities in carbonates and develop microfissures in sandstones. The microfissure porosity in sandstone is limited but can increase through other geological processes such as overpressure. More importantly, these acids can maintain the acidity of pore waters, inhibit the precipitation of dissolved minerals, and help to preserve reservoir porosity. Although temperature plays an insignificant role in laboratory simulations, it influences both the generation and destruction processes of organic acids in deep reservoirs on geologic time scales and, thus, warrants further attention. The results provide a basis for recognizing the typical patterns of organic acid dissolution on different reservoir rocks and further suggest the potential role of organic acids in the formation and preservation of secondary porosity in deeply buried reservoirs.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in pulmonary function after wedge resection, segmentectomy, and lobectomy. Methods: The patients were divided into 4 groups: lobectomy group, segmentectomy group, wedge resection group, and mediastinal surgery group. The pulmonary function was evaluated at various time points: 3 days before surgery, 1 month, 6 months, 12 months, and then 24 months after surgery. Results: The analysis results of forced expiratory volume in one second difference and breath-holding tests difference were consistent: Lobectomy group was higher than segmentectomy group, wedge resection group, and mediastinal surgery group at 4 postoperative time points ( P < .05); segmentectomy group was higher than the wedge resection group and mediastinal surgery group ( P < .05), and there was no statistical difference between the wedge resection group and the mediastinal surgery group ( P > .05). Analysis results of tidal volume difference: Lobectomy group was higher than segmentectomy group, wedge resection group, and mediastinal surgery group at 4 postoperative time points ( P < .05); segmentectomy group was higher than wedge resection group and mediastinal surgery group at 1 month after surgery ( P < .05). Analysis results of the diffusion capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide difference: lobectomy group and segmentectomy group were higher than wedge resection group and mediastinal surgery group at 4 postoperative time points ( P < .05). Analysis results of the stair-climbing test difference: lobectomy group and segmentectomy group were higher than the wedge resection group and mediastinal surgery group at 4 postoperative time points ( P < .05). Conclusion: Segmentectomy was superior to lobectomy in the protection of pulmonary function, while wedge resection was superior to segmentectomy. The recovery process of the pulmonary function was the fastest during the first 6 months after surgery.

Wear particles that detach from the surface of prostheses induce excessive activation of osteoclast and immoderate release of inflammatory cytokines that lead to peri-implant osteolysis and aseptic loosening. In this work, we investigated whether magnoflorine, a quaternary aporphine alkaloid extracted from the Chinese herb Magnolia or Aristolochia, could effectively inhibit inflammatory calvarial osteolysis caused by titanium particles in mouse models, inflammatory response as well as osteoclastogenesis in vitro mediated via receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL). Micro-computed tomography and histological examination of mice treated with magnoflorine revealed fewer resorption pits, less osteoclasts formation and inflammatory cytokine expression. Moreover, in vitro differentiation of osteoclasts and bone resorption as well as titanium particle-induced inflammatory response were dose-dependently inhibited by magnoflorine. These were accompanied by reduced transcription of osteoclast-specific genes encoding tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), V-ATPase d2, c-Fos, cathepsin K, nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) c1, and calcitonin receptor (CTR). Further research on mechanism showed that the inhibition of phosphorylation of TAK1 and subsequent activation of MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways were found to mediate the suppressive effects of magnoflorine. Collectively, these results suggested that magnoflorine treatment could effectively prevent peri-implant osteolysis due to wear debris as well as other diseases caused by chronic inflammation and excessive osteoclast activation.
