Deep-sea pipelines exhibit lateral global buckling under high temperature and pressure differences. Numerical simulations are an effective and easy way to obtain the deformation and stress distribution of a post-buckling pipeline with a low cost. A relatively accurate and convenient simulation model using the explicit dynamic method was developed based on ABAQUS software to analyse pipeline lateral global buckling. In pipeline global buckling analysis, the dynamic variation of soil resistance as the pipeline moves laterally, the optimized computational length and the use of smooth initial imperfection profiles influence the accuracy of the simulation results. These three key factors were discussed here, and calculation methods were proposed. A CEL simulation model with improved boundary conditions that reduce the influence of wave reflection with a low calculation time cost was built to calculate the variation dynamics of soil resistance throughout the buckling process. Different computational lengths for pipelines with different parameters were simulated, and a fitting function to obtain an optimized computational length was proposed. A method to build the profiles of a pipeline with smooth imperfections was developed. Based on these analyses of the three impact factors, a relatively accurate and convenient simulation model for pipeline global lateral buckling analysis was established. Finally, an engineering case was evaluated to show the application of the simulation model and to test the reliability of this model.

Adam Smith's The Theory of Moral Sentiments establishes propriety as the main principle of moral philosophy, with sympathy, justice, conscience, prudence, benevolence, and self-command as the core values of the moral sentiments. Smith's classical spirituality may provide various meaningful references and philosophical inspirations for spiritual, moral, and cultural education advocated by the whole-person education and holistic education in the 21st century. The chapter aims to interpret the essence of Smith's propriety theory through a text analysis of The Theory of Moral Sentiments and explore the role of propriety in educational philosophy. At the same time, the chapter examines the core values of Smith's moral sentiments aimed at discovering new spiritual elements of whole-person education and enriching the value, concept, and practice of holistic education. The chapter further addresses that Smith's theory of moral sentiments shares similar values with traditional Chinese moral philosophy, while the values can be tested, measured, and even manipulated by neuroscientific experiments. Not only is Smith's philosophy not outdated, but it can also become a new reference and provide added value to East Asian college students in an effort to reconstruct their spirituality, inspire moral development, explore new research fields, and develop an innovative curriculum for holistic education.

Addressing the digital and spatial study of the Protestant market in Taiwan and mainland China is pioneering attempt to enhance the Christian study in Asia. The article selects Taipei and China's five additional provincial capital cities in the southeast coast to calculate and map the supply-side and demand-side of the Protestant market in the early of 21st century. Utilizing the digital and spatial methods, the article provides a comparative perspective in measuring the Protestant density, accessibility and availability of Taipei and five capital cities in China's southeast coast. The article concludes that in light of a democratic society with a religious freedom policy, Taipei has enjoyed a healthy Protestant market demonstrated by its better Protestant density, accessibility and availability.

Commercialization and corporatization (C&C) in American higher education since the 1980s have gradually marginalized shared governance in various areas. This chapter is a case study of an American public university, based on empirical studies through in-depth surveys, observations, and base data collection. It addresses the issue of academic commercialization and corporatization and their impact on shared governance, faculty morale, and faculty strain in their research, teaching, and service. After defining the key concepts, explaining the methodology and discussing the data, this chapter examines the roles of commercialization and corporatization in decreasing shared governance and lowering faculty morale in academic research, teaching, and service. The chapter concludes that, with the erosion of academic freedom and faculty power, academic commercialization and corporatization have created dissatisfaction among faculty members who lack pride in their profession and distrust administrators.

Different from conventional research methods, spatial study applies GIS to study space, time, and mapping, all of which are valuable in analyzing religious institutions, sites, and locations. Supported by multiple spatial, digital, and statistical methods, this study selects eight cities and prefectures in China and examines their Islamic mosques based on accessible government data. Following a discussion of methodologies and data, the article focuses on the density of the Muslim population in the selected cities by calculating the average number of Muslims attending one mosque. In addition, this study applies a spatial method, the location analysis method ( LAM ), to scrutinize the availability of Islamic mosques by measuring the average distance between Chinese Muslim residential areas and the nearest mosque. Furthermore, this study employs two additional spatial methods, the two-step floating catchment area method (2 SFCA ) and the network analysis method ( NAM ), to investigate the accessibility of mosques by estimating the average driving time required for Muslims to reach the nearest mosque. After comparing the average rankings of density, availability, and accessibility of mosques in the eight cities and prefectures, this study proposes three criteria for determining mosque accessibility in Xinjiang and Ningxia, two areas in China with a large concentration of Muslims.区别于传统的宗教研究方法，空间研究是利用地理信息系统的科技手段和方法，展示和分析宗教发展的空间、时间和图像。本项研究是综合空间、数码和统计的多种方法，选择中国新疆和宁夏的八个城市和地区，依据中国政府官方的统计数据，对当地伊斯兰教清真寺的存在性和可达性进行案例研究。文章首先讨论了研究方法和数据来源,其次计量分析了所选八个地区清真寺与穆斯林人口的比例和稠密度，由此得出参加每一个清真寺活动的穆斯林之平均人数。同时，文章使用空间研究中的“区域分析法”，计算每个穆斯林从居住地到达最近清真寺的平均距离。另外,文章还使用了空间研究中“两步法”和“网络分析法”，对比研究每个穆斯林从居住地到最近清真寺的平均驾车或乘车时间。最后，文章根据穆斯林稠密度、清真寺存在性和可达性，提出了鉴定一个地区清真寺可达性程度高低和难易的三个初步计量标准，以便展示和分析伊斯兰教市场的供需矛盾。 (This article is in English.)

Pipelines are important to offshore oil and gas development, but suffers from the pipeline walking phenomenon due to cyclic temperature variations—where large axial walking distances threaten the safety of pipeline systems. Current research indicates that pipeline walking is triggered by steel catenary riser (SCR) tension, seabed slopes, or thermal transients. This paper proposes a new driving mechanism for the pipeline walking phenomenon, involving cyclic hardening soil strength. The finite element analysis method was adopted to analyse the soil friction difference induced walking phenomenon, and the influence of key parameters on the gain in soil friction on walking distance was studied. Pipeline walking distances under different drainage conditions in the heating and cooling processes were also calculated, and the impact of the degree of drainage in the heating process was determined. To better understand the new pipeline walking mechanism, theoretical analysis of the walking behaviour under different cyclic soil friction conditions was carried out. Analytical solutions for estimating the pipeline walking distance were also provided, based on the simplified theoretical analysis.

Pipeline walking is a global axial movement caused by the asymmetric distribution of axial force along the pipeline during the repetitive operational loading cycle. The pipeline walking rate, increasing with the loading cycles, may lead to high stress thereby the failure of connectors at PLETs or PLEMs. Current research studies and design guidelines focused on free-end pipelines and neglected changes in the pipeline walking rate and axial resistance with effects of pipeline end structures. However, in practice, several pipelines are adjacent to PLETs or PLEMs, which potentially affect the pipeline walking and expansion behaviour thereby walking rate and axial displacement. This study analyses the walking phenomenon considering the effects of mobilisation of the resistance at the pipeline end structures and develops new analytical solutions for the present problem, in terms of different walking mechanism, maximum axial resistance Pmax, and positions of pipeline end structures. The analytical solutions are validated through numerical simulation results. The case study results indicate the axial resistance generated by PLETs/PLEMs can effectively mitigate pipeline walking rate compared with free-end pipeline walking. In particular, the influence of PLETs/PLEMs is investigated, highlighting the sensitivity of the pipeline walking to the end boundary conditions covering different design scenarios.

Pipelines are widely used for transporting oil resources in offshore oil exploitation. As burying an entire deep-water pipeline is not possible owing to the large water depth, an on-bottom pipeline inevitably exhibits lateral global buckling deformation under high temperature and pressure in practice. Triggering several controllable mitigatory global buckling deformations by installing sleepers under pipelines is a more effective alternative to prevent cross-sectional failure caused by excessive buckling. While sleepers may trigger vertical global buckling and this risk must be verified before they are installed in practice. This study analysed the feature of lifting deformation for a pipeline laid on a sleeper. Nine influential factors of the variation in the lifting displacement were analysed. Based on the nonlinear relationship between lifting displacement and temperature difference, three key points and four relevant key parameters for describing the lifting displacement curve were proposed and calculated for the conditions of a pipeline with different combinations of influential factors. A back propagation neural network was trained to model the relationship between the locations of the three key points and the values of the nine influential factors. The error analysis indicated that the trained network can effectively predict the vertical lifting deformation and is suitable for a pipeline that experiences no lifting deformation. Based on the feature points predicted by the trained network, the approximate profile of vertical lifting displacement during the heating process can be described, and the assessment of whether the lifting displacement with the loading conditions in practice is allowable can be conducted.

This article is intended to conduct a three-dimensional examination of China’s rural land rights and the complex dynamic among political power, economic capital, and farmers’ rights during the past seventy years. First, the study takes a close look at the historical changes in the nature, scope, and ownership of land property in rural China during four significant time periods from 1949 to 2019. Second, it uses Ronald Coase’s theory on property rights in dissecting the four paradoxes and dilemmas in China’s rural land ownership, including the extent of clarity and stability of land property rights, the “three rights system” (the rights to ownership, contracting and operation of land) and three stagnations in defining and exercising such three rights, the simultaneous shortage and waste of land resources, as well as the restrictions on land transactions and the requirement to protect collective property. With examples derived from selected evidence, the article documents how both political power and economic capital have worked together to deprive farmers’ land rights. It concludes with a critical analysis of the current status of China’s rural economy, the problem of applying Western economic theories to China’s reality, as well as the theoretical definition, legal protection and policy parameters of land property rights in China.

With the development of submarine oil and gas resources, research on global pipeline buckling caused by high temperature and pressure in the process of oil and gas transport is becoming an important issue. Owing to human factors or to uneven seabed conditions, local bends are produced in the process of pipeline manufacturing and laying. Those bends are called geometric initial imperfections whose deformation forms can be divided into a single arch symmetric deformation and a double arch antisymmetric deformation. In this paper, the energy method is introduced to calculate the analytical solution of pipeline lateral buckling with a single arch initial imperfection, and the cause of snap buckling phenomenon is discussed. A FEA model is established, and the difference between the analytical solution and numerical solution is also presented.

Submarine pipelines are the primary component of an offshore oil transportation system. Under operating conditions, a pipeline is subjected to high temperatures and pressures to improve oil mobility. As a result, additional stress accumulates in pipeline sections, which causes global buckling. For an exposed deep-water pipeline, lateral buckling is the major form of this global buckling. Large lateral displacement causes a very high bending moment which may lead to a local buckling failure in the pipe cross-section. This paper proposes a lateral global buckling failure envelope for deep-water HT/HP pipelines using a numerical simulation analysis. It analyzes the factors influencing the envelope, including the thickness t, diameter D, soil resistance coefficient μ, calculating length Lf, imperfection length L and imperfection amplitude V. Equations to calculate the failure envelope are established to make future post-buckling pipeline failure assessment more convenient. The results show that (1) the limit pressure difference pmax (the failure pressure difference for a post-buckling pipeline when it suffers no difference in temperature) is usually below the burst pressure difference pb (which is the largest pressure difference a pipeline can bear and is determined from the strength and sectional dimensions of the pipeline) and is approximately 0.62–0.75 times the value of pb and (2) thickness t has little influence on the normalized envelopes, but affects pmax. The diameter D, soil resistance coefficient μ, and calculating length Lf influence the maximum failure temperature difference Tmax (the failure temperature difference for a pipeline suffering no pressure difference). The diameter D also significantly affects the form of the normalized envelope.

Subsea pipelines are important facilities in offshore oil and gas industry to transport High-Pressure and High-Temperature (HPHT) hydrocarbon. They are often exerted by cyclic thermal loading through the whole operational life, which may trigger asymmetry in the effective axial force (EAF) profile, leading to a global axial movement, defined as ‘pipeline walking’. It may cause the downtime and structural risks, since this directional accumulation in axial movement results in the overstressing of end connection, loss of tension in a steel catenary riser (SCR) and other issues in the field, therefore subsea pipeline design requires a reliable estimate of the global pipeline walking rate. Current design methods adopt a constant soil friction coefficient and ignore variations in soil-pipeline interaction with time during the heating up and cooling down processes. In reality, the overlooked changing soil friction is important, and may alter the pipeline walking behaviours. To achieve an accurate assessment of pipeline walking, this paper advances the conventional design practice, by introducing a time-dependent axial soil friction function, to examine the pipeline walking behaviour over the operational thermal cycles. A suite of time-dependent matrixes is provided to reveal the development of the expansion/contraction of the pipeline, the corresponding mobilised soil frictions and the EAF profile. The significant nonlinear EAF profile in response to the time-dependent soil friction is examined, and is used to well assess the accumulation in pipeline walking rate. The proposed analytical framework is applied into case studies to demonstrate its validity and applicability in practice.

Subsea pipelines are commonly employed in the offshore oil and gas industry to transport high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) hydrocarbons. The phenomenon of pipeline walking is a topic that has drawn a great deal of attention, and is related to the on-bottom stability of the pipeline, such as directional accumulation with respect to axial movement, which can threaten the security of the entire pipeline system. An accurate assessment of pipeline walking is therefore necessary for offshore pipeline design. This paper reports a comprehensive suite of numerical analyses investigating the performance of pipeline walking, with a focus on the effect of increasing axial soil resistance on walking rates. Three walking-driven modes (steel catenary riser (SCR) tension, downslope, and thermal transient) are considered, covering a wide range of influential parameters. The variation in walking rate with respect to the effect of increased soil friction is well reflected in the development of the effective axial force (EAF) profile. A method based on the previous analytical solution is proposed for predicting the accumulated walking rates throughout the entire service life, where the concept of equivalent soil friction is adopted.

With the increase in pipeline operating depth, research on pipeline global buckling during the process of oil and gas transport is drawing considerable attention. Numerical simulation is an important method that is used to analyze pipeline buckling, which is immediately caused by the combined action of high temperature and high pressure. Two important problems must be solved before simulating submarine pipeline global buckling. Because the finite-element (FE) model length greatly affects analysis of the buckling results, finding a reasonable model length is the first problem in finite-element analysis (FEA). The second is how to trigger global buckling in the pipeline because the ideal pipeline would not buckle in FEA. The growth of Chinese Historians in the United States (CHUS) members is arguably a symbolic reflection of the overall progress of overseas Chinese scholars in the United States during the past twenty years. Generally speaking, since the 1980s, there have been four major phases of development of CHUS members. The first one, lasting roughly from the early 1980s to the early 1990s, saw most of them devoting themselves to the rigorous post-graduate studies and successfully obtaining their doctoral degrees in history during the early years of the 1990s. The second period, from the early to the mid-1990s, was marked by job searches on the part of many CHUS members, who successfully competed for intensely coveted positions in American academia. The People's Republic of China has experienced significant transformations since Deng Xiaoping instituted economic reforms in 1978. Subsequent leaders continued and often broadened Deng's policies, shifting the nation from agrarianism to industrialism, from isolation to internationalism, and from centralized planning to market-based economics. As the world strives to understand the nation's rapid development, few observers have comprehensively examined the social and cultural price of the economic boom for the majority of the Chinese people. Zhaohui Hong assesses the sociocultural consequences of these reforms in this provocative study. He contends that modern China functions as an oligarchy or plutocracy ruled by an alliance of political power and private capital where the boundaries between the private and public sectors are constantly shifting. This "power-capital institution" based on three millennia of Confucian ideology and decades of Maoist communism exercises monopolistic control of public resources at the expense of civil society and social justice for the majority of citizens. The Price of China's Economic Development urges policymakers to alter their analytic lens. While industrial and commercial development is quantitatively measured, Hong argues that social progress should be assessed qualitatively, with justice its ultimate goal and fair allocation of resources and opportunity as the main index of success. This sophisticated analysis introduces English speakers to the varied and significant work of contemporary Chinese scholars and substantially enriches the international dialogue.

With the case study of the local elections in a poverty-stricken, largely illiterate and isolated village in the remote and mountainous Yi minority village, this article is intended to address the so-called “three disconnects” phenomenon in the development of China’s rural election. They refer to the disconnect between economic development and democratic elections, the disconnect between democratic elections and democratic consciousness, and the disconnect between direct local elections in the rural areas and the higher level elections in urban regions. The article examines the political reasons and institutional logic behind this unique development of rural democracy in China as well as the existential value of the three “disconnects.”

This article, drawing references from popular theories of social exclusion, capability and civil rights, develops a concept—the poverty of social rights—in the causal analysis of poverty. The author believes that deficiency of economic resources and working capability are not the only reasons for urban poverty; in fact, the lack of social rights on the part of the disadvantaged sectors of society constitutes simultaneously the cause and consequence of urban poverty. The article defines the concept of poverty of social rights and its characteristics, and analyzes its China phenomenon. In the end the article poses several options and remedies for China's poverty-relief efforts through designing and implementing a Chinese-style affirmative action.

Given the fact that the new private entrepreneurs (NPEs) are playing an increasingly important role in Chinese politics and economy, this article maps the historical evolution of the NPEs through analyzing five main private business groups, including small individual businessmen, price speculators, land speculators, enterprise investors and high-tech investors. The article also examines six major ways that the NPEs have sought to protect their private property and improve their moral reputation, ranging from obtaining the Communist Party membership, congressional seat and an official position within a government branch, to relying on the law, participating in the local election process, and contributing to charitable causes. In so doing, they have increased their influence in the Chinese political, social, and economic spheres.

With the aid of the 'butterfly effect' theory, this article investigates the role of ordinary individuals, both Chinese and American, in the formulation, implementation and promotion of 'Ping Pong Diplomacy', which brought about the US‐China rapprochement in the early 1970s. Through examining the twists and turns in the process of 'Ping Pong Diplomacy' making, this study intends to bring one's attention to a number of seemingly less significant historical episodes and their long-term impact on US‐China relations. Like small butterflies whose spontaneous actions can generate unexpected climatic changes, the various individuals in this study, including players and officials of the table-tennis teams, low-ranking diplomats and journalists, played an indispensable part in bringing forth a dramatic transformation in US‐China relations, which in turn altered the Cold War climate in general.

Based on observations of the causes and characteristics of poverty in both the United States and China, the author has previously analyzed the four kinds of human poverty - that of materials, capability, rights, and motivations. Tens of millions of members of the Protestant House Churches in China have either already experienced or will be undergoing these four stages of poverty. This paper chooses to focus on the characteristics of the Chinese house churches' poverty of rights from 1999 to 2009 while putting forward several suggestions for their selfpreservation and future development of these churches. During the transition of the Chinese religious society, the governmental policy seems to have evolved from the administrative control to legal management. The numerous political movements in China since 1949 have shown that the government should not and cannot really change one's spiritual essence.
