14. Forecasting of the Thermosphere via Assimilation of Electron Density and Temperature Data

Abstract

The paper presents experiments of driving a physics-based thermosphere model by assimilating electron density (Ne) and temperature (Tn) data using the ensemble adjustment Kalman filter (EAKF) technique. This study not only helps to gauge the accuracy of the assimilation, to explain the inherent model bias, and to understand the limitations of the framework, but it also establishes EAKF as a viable technique in the presence of realistic data assimilation scenarios to forecast the highly dynamical thermosphere. The results from perfect model scenarios show that data assimilation changes and, more often than not, improves the model state. Data from Swarm-A, Swarm-C, CHAMP, and GRACE-A are used to validate the resulting analysis states. The independent validation results show that the Ne-guided thermosphere state does not outperform the model state without data assimilation along the considered orbits. This may be due to the limited number of bonafide Ne profiles available for the thermosphere specification tasks in the experiments. More importantly, the results show that the Ne-guided thermosphere state does not deteriorate much in performance during geomagnetic storm time. The results reveal a few challenges of using Ne profiles in a hypothetical operational data assimilation exercise. The experiment with assimilating Tn shows more promise over Ne in terms of estimating mass density along the orbits of both CHAMP and GRACE-A satellites. The results show that the improvement gained in the overall forecasted thermosphere state is better during solar minimum compared to that of solar maximum. These results also provide insights into the biases inherent in the physics-based model. Abstract

The first systematic comparison between Swarm-C accelerometer-derived thermospheric density and both empirical and physics-based model results using multiple model performance metrics is presented. This comparison is performed at the satellite's high temporal 10-s resolution, which provides a meaningful evaluation of the models' fidelity for orbit prediction and other space weather forecasting applications. The comparison against the physical model is influenced by the specification of the lower atmospheric forcing, the high-latitude ionospheric plasma convection, and solar activity. Some insights into the model response to thermosphere-driving mechanisms are obtained through a machine learning exercise. The results of this analysis show that the short-timescale variations observed by Swarm-C during periods of high solar and geomagnetic activity were better captured by the physics-based model than the empirical models. 30. A New Reduction Model for Enhancing the Interpolation Accuracy of VMF1/VMF3 Tropospheric Products in GNSS Applications.

Abstract

Grid-wise Vienna Mapping Functions 1 (VMF1) and Vienna Mapping Functions 3 (VMF3) tropospheric products have been widely used to interpolate the a priori zenith hydrostatic delay (ZHD) and zenith wet delay (ZWD) over the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) stations for the mitigation of tropospheric delays inherited in GNSS observations. Since the two products only provide ground surface ZHD and ZWD for global grid points, the ZHD and ZWD of the four grid points nearest to the GNSS site need to be reduced to the same height of the GNSS site before a horizontal interpolation (e.g., bilinear interpolation or inverse-distance weighted interpolation) is implemented. However, the accuracy of the officially recommended simple reduction model may not be as good as desired if the height of a GNSS site largely differs from that of the four ground surface grid points to be used in the interpolation. In this contribution, a new reduction model for each grid point is developed for reducing the grid-wise ZHD and ZWD to the target height to improve the interpolation performance. The sample data for the modelling were the 10-year (2010–2019) ZHD and ZWD profiles over the grid points obtained from ERA5 monthly-mean reanalysis data, while 3-year (2020–2022) ERA5 hourly reanalysis and IGS (International GNSS Service) site-wise ZTD products were used to evaluate the new model. Test results showed that the accuracy of the ZHD, ZWD (as well as the ZTD) interpolated from the VMF1/VMF3 products deduced by the new model was significantly better than the ones deduced by traditional methods, especially for sites with substantial height disparities from adjacent VMF grid points. Abstract

There has been substantial research on multi-medium visual measurement in fields such as underwater three-dimensional reconstruction and underwater structure monitoring. Addressing the issue where traditional air-based visual-measurement models fail due to refraction when light passes through different media, numerous studies have established refraction-imaging models based on the actual geometry of light refraction to compensate for the effects of refraction on cross-media imaging. However, the calibration of refraction parameters inevitably contains errors, leading to deviations in these parameters. To analyze the impact of refraction-parameter deviations on measurements in underwater structure visual navigation, this paper develops a dual-media stereo-vision measurement simulation model and conducts comprehensive simulation experiments. The results indicate that to achieve high-precision underwater-measurement outcomes, the calibration method for refraction parameters, the distribution of the targets in the field of view, and the distance of the target from the camera must all be meticulously designed. These findings provide guidance for the construction of underwater stereo-vision measurement systems, the calibration of refraction parameters, underwater experiments, and practical applications.
