The main object of this paper is to study the role of buffer in the process of airspace planning, so as to obtain an efficient and optimal air traffic system configuration. Specifically, this paper proposes a system modeling method to describe the nonlinear air traffic flow dynamics. The purpose is to find an optimal allocation scheme for each flight plan and define the operation process of each sub-segment. First, the model of an air traffic system with buffers is built, and it can switch between different configurations. In each configuration, the system model is described by specific parameter sets, and the configuration variation allows us to change the structure of the air traffic system. Then, we discuss some performance measures of the air traffic system and indicate how they can be applied to obtain optimal buffer allocations. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the performance of terminal control area.

Purpose A number of automated tools will be required for the purpose of enabling efficient services in air traffic control. The purpose of this paper is to devise an optimal flight trajectory search method that optimizes airspace system efficiency for 3D space in the presence of uncertainties. Design/methodology/approach This paper put forward an optimization model for generating applicable solutions of multi-aircraft conflict resolution problem, and the solution is based on the principle of optimality. Findings The conflict resolution problem between multiple aircraft can be described by spatial discretization, and the approach taken digitizes the 3D space into a grid of nodes. Practical implications The simulation examples are given to illustrate the validity of trajectory search model and stress on the impact of different system parameters. Originality/value Realistic constraints that are convenient to operate are incorporated in the system model, and the results show that it can provide reliable decision-making for conflict avoidance.

This paper presented a modeling methodology with the aim of controlling flight flow. By incorporating minimum safety separation time, it was demonstrated that the control of air traffic flow in the terminal control area can be regarded as the planning of different departure queues in each fix. The jet route control model for different scenarios were put forward by formulating various types of constraints emphasized in the air traffic control rules. The inherent relationships for different system variables were acquired and the proposed optimization models were applied to coordinate several different departure air traffic flows in the specified fixes. In addition, some key features of the presented system optimization model were discussed. The proposed max-plus system model has been validated using real traffic flow data and some relevant experimental results were reported. Moreover, the influence of different factors such as temperature, weight, as well as aircraft climbing mode on the system optimization performance were also analyzed which demonstrated the validation of the presented system model.

This paper presents a general framework for resolving resource utilizations conflicts of air traffic system, expressed in the form of a max-plus linear model. The general air traffic system optimization model is presented taking into account buffer size in view of different purposes. The proposed air traffic system model is very flexible and it is extensible focusing on distinct circumstances. The dynamics of air traffic systems is characterized through the occurrence of discrete events such as aircrafts entering or leaving sub-segments. We focus on input control of air traffic system modeled by max-plus algebra by controlling the inflow of aircraft into the system. The constraints between input variables, state variables and output variables were obtained. The proposed method aims to minimize system total delay to meet demand specifications, allowing the air traffic controller to obtain the best control policy, which delays the occurrence of input events or varying input rate of system resources. Through simulations we verify the performance of the proposed max-plus linear model control scheme.
