Most research on Intimate Partner Violence against women (IPV) has tended to present women as passive victims, but in recent years, there has been an increase in studies adopting a strengths-based approach. The aim of the present study is to review the empirical literature about resilience in women survivors of IPV to (a) analyze the consensus on the definition and assessment of resilience; (b) study the correlates of resilience; and (c) reflect on the applicability of such knowledge in policies and professional practice. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search was carried out in the Scopus, WoS and PsycINFO databases. The search yielded 42 articles published in English or Spanish over an unlimited timeframe. Results showed that process-oriented, trait-oriented, and outcomes-oriented definitions of resilience were all adopted in the research and that assessment methods also differed across studies. Individual, relational, and contextual factors were found as resilience correlates.There is a need for a theoretical consensus and for research on the mechanisms through which vulnerability or protective factors exert their influence on groups with specific risk conditions. Finally, governments and institutions should take actions to support women and children and to prevent future IPV. Gran parte de los estudios sobre Violencia de Género en la Pareja (VGP) presentan a las mujeres como víctimas pasivas, pero en los últimos años el número de investigaciones centradas en fortalezas está aumentando. El objetivo del presente estudio es revisar la literatura empírica sobre resiliencia en mujeres supervivientes de VGP para: (a) analizar el consenso en la definición y evaluación de resiliencia; (b) estudiar los correlatos del constructo; y (c) reflexionar sobre la aplicabilidad de este conocimiento en las políticas y la práctica profesional. Siguiendo las guías PRISMA, se realizó una revisión sistemática en las bases de datos Scopus, WoS y PsycINFO, encontrando 42 artículos publicados en inglés o español sin restricción temporal. Los resultados muestran que los estudios adoptan definiciones de resiliencia tanto orientadas al proceso como al rasgo y a los resultados, y que el método de evaluación difiere entre investigaciones. Entre los correlatos de resiliencia se encontraron factores individuales, relacionales y contextuales. Se necesita un consenso teórico y profundizar en los mecanismos por los cuales los factores de vulnerabilidad o protección afectan a grupos con riesgos específicos. Por último, los gobiernos e instituciones deberían emprender acciones de prevención y de apoyo a las mujeres e hijos/as.

While the negative impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on mental health have already been established in previous research, the pathways through which these events affect psychological well-being are still unclear. This cross-sectional study analyzed the relationship between ACEs and psychological distress. It also examined the role of coping strategies, emotion regulation, and adult attachment in this association.The sample consisted of 207 women receiving psychotherapeutic support from Public Mental Health Services in Spain. Just under half (46.4%) being treated by clinical psychology services and just over half (53.1%) were also being treated by psychiatry services. Descriptive and association analysis were performed on the variables involved.48.3% of participants reported four or more ACEs and the correlation with symptom severity was significant. Regression equations showed that four variables explained 56.2% of the variance: Fear of Rejection and Abandonment, Lack of Control, Rejection and Cognitive Restructuring.ACEs are directly associated with the severity of psychological distress. The data suggest that appropriate, sensitive exploration of these experiences can be therapeutic. The relationships between type of adversity, attachment relationships, emotion regulation, and coping strategies reveal indirect pathways through which ACEs affect women's mental health.

Although disasters threaten all people who experience them, they do not affect all members of society in the same way. Its effects are not solely restricted to the economic sphere, they also affect the physical and mental health of those who suffer from them, having a particular impact on women and limiting their life chances. The aim of this study was to examine the impact the 2010 Haiti earthquake had on the seropositivity of female survivors. Method: Using data from the Demographic and Health Survey, this study examines the impact of the 2010 Haiti earthquake on gender relations associated with the probability of being HIV positive through the differences-in-differences strategy. Results: A differential of four percentage points is observed in the probability of HIV seropositivity between men and women, favoring men. Additionally, it is observed that the probability of seropositivity intensifies when the cohabitation household is headed by a woman. Conclusion: Disasters are not indifferent to the gender of the people affected. In the second decade of the 21st century, the conclusions obtained show, once again, the need for incorporating the gender perspective into the management of natural hazards in the field of health. This is the case of the differential exposure to HIV after the earthquake in Haiti.

espanolEl consumo de drogas en menores es una realidad preocupante, especialmente el de sustancias legales. Una de las principales medidas emprendidas para hacer frente a esta situacion es el desarrollo de programas de prevencion escolar dirigidos a favorecer la adquisicion de actitudes y estilos de vida saludable. El objetivo de este articulo es comprobar si existen diferencias en el efecto de este tipo de programas en funcion del genero. Para ello se lleva a cabo un analisis de los datos obtenidos en la evaluacion del programa escolar “Juego de Llaves” realizada en el curso escolar 2016-2017 con una muestra de 4.195 estudiantes de Educacion Secundaria de 32 centros educativos. Los resultados muestran diferencias ligadas al genero previas a la implantacion del programa en temas como el ocio, interaccion social, gestion emocional, valores e informacion sobre drogas, que se mantienen una vez realizado. La aplicacion del programa consigue un efecto diferencial en la autoestima que se incrementa en el grupo de las adolescentes. Se concluye recomendando que cualquier programa preventivo debe analizar las desigualdades observadas y las situaciones de vulnerabilidad especificas y proponer la definicion de indicadores de genero que permitan medir la efectividad de los programas en ambos sexos. EnglishDrug use among adolescents is a worrying reality, especially regarding legal substances. One of the main measures undertaken to face this situation is the implementation of school-based drug abuse prevention programs that are focused on promoting the acquisition of healthy attitudes and lifestyles by students. This article aims to know if there are differences in the effects of this type of programmes according to gender. For this purpose, an analysis is performed with the data obtained through the evaluation of the school-based Program “Juego de Llaves”. This evaluation was carried out in the course 2016-2017 with a sample of 4.195 students of compulsory secondary education from 32 Spanish schools. The results show gender-related differences prior to the implementation of the program on topics such as leisure time, social interaction, emotional management, values and information about drugs, which are maintained once it is carried out. The application ofthe program achieves a differential effect on self-esteem that increases in the group of girls. It concludes by recommending that any preventive program should analyze observed inequalities and specific vulnerability situations and propose the definition of gender indicators to measure the effectiveness of programmes in both sexes.

The relationship between adverse childhood experiences, attachment and adult mental health has been pointed out in a large amount of studies. In a sample of 339 women receiving support from mental health and social services, this research analyzed the association between three adult attachment variables (fear of rejection or abandonment—FRA; desire for closeness—DC; preference for independence—PI) and four mental health indicators. After dichotomizing these variables, we constructed eight configurations of attachment and examined their association with mental health indicators. BAB people (those below the median in FRA, above in DC and below in PI) obtained the most favorable scores in mental health, whereas the ABA configuration (above the median in FRA, below in DC and above in PI) was the least favorable. The association between attachment configurations and mental health indicators was different to what might be expected, aggregating the effects of individual attachment variables. When analyzing the relationship between configurations and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), women with an ABA configuration reported the highest number of ACEs and eight ACE types had a higher-than-expected contingency coefficient. In conclusion, these findings suggest that certain adult attachment configurations are associated with a greater number of ACEs and poorer mental health indicators in adult women.

A growing and significant body of research has documented the close relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and health outcomes in adults. Less is known about the complex pathways through which ACEs exert their influence. This article examines the direct relationship between the quality of perceived physical health and childhood adversities. The association between the adversities and the physical health with other psychological and social variables is also analyzed. Data were collected from a sample of 170 subjects, using tools to assess adverse childhood experiences, physical health-related quality of life, socioeconomic vulnerability, emotion regulation, coping strategies, attachment, and social support. Results showed a high frequency of ACEs among the adult population, and the correlation with poor physical health was highly significant. Regression equations to predict physical health also revealed the following as significant variables: wishful thinking, social withdrawal, and cognitive restructuring as coping styles, reappraisal to achieve emotion regulation, fear of rejection or abandonment, and desire for closeness in relation to attachment figures, hardship, and poor financial support. The relationship between the different forms of ACE and social vulnerability identifies the important indirect contribution of childhood adversity to health and socioeconomic conditions in adulthood.

The general aim of this research is to evaluate the singular weight of attachment relationships in psychopathology, to determine the point to which these relationships cannot be subsumed by other variables that are famously related to attachment, such as experience of stressful life events, social support, and coping styles. 172 people treated in mental health centers provided data related to these four aspects and about manifestations of psychopathology. Multiple linear regression analyses determined that 51% of the variance in the level of symptomatology is explained with six variables: two related to adult attachment (fear of rejection and abandonment in romantic relationships, and the degree of similarity to the fearful prototype), one related to social support (family appreciation), one to life events (overall perceived stress), and two to coping style (cognitive restructuring and social withdrawal). Fear of rejection was the variable accounting for the most variance. The findings suggest that adult attachment is a non-redundant individual factor associated with manifestations of psychological dysfunction and highlight the desirability of taking attachment history into account in clinical practice.

The main goal was to test if children with intellectual disability (ID) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show lower quality of life (QOL) in comparison to those with only ID. The KidsLife Scale was applied to 1060 children with ID, 25% of whom also had ASD, aged 4-21 years old. Those with ASD showed lower scores in several QOL domains but, when the effect of other variables was controlled, lower scores were only kept for interpersonal relationships, social inclusion, and physical wellbeing. Slightly higher scores were found for material wellbeing. ASD, Level of ID and support needs were the covariables with the greatest influence in most domains, while gender was only significant for social inclusion (girls scored lower than boys).

Official surveys on this phenomenon show that both the prevalence and risky consumption of men and women are reaching similar levels, with even higher figures for these behaviours in the case of girls at the end of adolescence. The aim of this article is to understand the influence of gender roles in the consumption of alcohol among adolescents and young adults. To this end, focus groups have been employed to identify similarities and differences both in drinking patterns and alcohol abuse among young males and females, as well as in the social meaning that both groups attribute to these practices. The results obtained show that the variables gender and age act in a combined way on the learning of alcohol consumption, as well as on the motivations and expectations that adolescents and young adults have regarding these practices. In addition, in this study three differentiated stages are identified: in the first, gender roles are clearly defined; in the second, there is a certain transgression of these roles mainly by young women, and in the third, there is a return to traditional gender roles.

Las encuestas oficiales sobre este fenómeno muestran un acercamiento entre varones y mujeres en las prevalencias de consumo y en los consumos de riesgo, e incluso una mayor incidencia de estas conductas en el caso de las mujeres al final de la etapa adolescente. El objetivo de este artículo es conocer la influencia que ejercen los roles de género en estas pautas de consumo en adolescentes y jóvenes. Para ello, se han realizado grupos focales que han permitido identificar las similitudes y diferencias que se producen tanto en las prácticas de consumo y abuso del alcohol que desarrollan estos colectivos, como en el significado social que unos y otras atribuyen a las citadas prácticas. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que las variables género y edad actúan de forma combinada en el aprendizaje del consumo de bebidas alcohólicas, así como en las motivaciones y expectativas que los y las adolescentes y jóvenes tienen sobre dichas prácticas. Además, en este estudio se identifican tres etapas diferenciadas, en la primera de ellas los roles de género se encuentran claramente definidos, en la segunda se observa cierta transgresión de los mismos fundamentalmente por parte de las mujeres y en la última se advierte una vuelta a los tradicionales roles de género.

Research into the effects of interpartner violence on the psychosocial development of the children of maltreated mothers is a relatively new field. This work examines the impact of exposure to interpartner violence (EIPV) on minors in middle and late adolescence, where this vicarious maltreatment is in addition to other situations of severe psychosocial risk. A group of adolescents who had suffered various types of direct maltreatment were compared with another group who, in addition to experiencing direct maltreatment, had mothers who had also been the victims of interpartner violence. There were 276 participants in total (138 adolescents and their mothers) reporting via questionnaires about their experiences related to maltreatment and about maladaptation and psychological dysfunction. The results demonstrate significant dysfunction in the adolescents, especially as indicated in the mothers’ reports. In addition, the results make it clear that the adolescents are actively and directly involved in the episodes of interpartner violence and that the additional negative impact of vicarious maltreatment is evident in almost every aspect of their lives. Only the attitude toward teachers scored worse in the no-EIPV group. EIPV minors scored higher on personal and social maladjustment and worse on adaptive skills, and showed a more marked tendency to internalize problems. This study emphasizes the importance of considering EIPV as a form of child maltreatment and including it in programs of protection and intervention.

The goal of this research was to establish possible predictive factors for both subjective and externally assessed quality of life in people with chronic schizophrenia.Sixty-eight people with schizophrenia took part in the study and were assessed using the World Health Organisation Quality of Life Assessment - Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF), the Quality of Life Scale (QLS), the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale for Schizophrenia (PANSS), the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), the Social Functioning Scale (SFS) tests. Correlations and multiple regression analysis were conducted to determine possible predictors of quality of life.The residential environment (rural/urban), diagnosis, age at onset of disorder, global functioning and social functioning explained 68% of the total variance based on proxiesrsquo; assessment quality of life. Living arrangements and social functioning emerged as predictor variables for subjective quality of life, explaining a 47.3% of the total variance.Socio-cultural factors, such as social integration or the quality of interpersonal relationships, have more influence on these peoplesrsquo; physical and psychological health than certain personal factors, such as psychopathology. It is therefore advisable to pay attention to the environment and macro-systemic variables when developing intervention plans to improve their quality of life.

Objective: The primary objective of this research is to examine the psychological reaction of 44 women with SCI during their process of adaptation to spinal cord injury, specifically with regard to coping strategies, motivation, performance anxiety, neuroticism, extraversion, depression and the possible relationship between these variables and others of a socio-demographic nature. Method: this is a correlational study with cross design strategy and evaluation. The selection process was carried out through health centers and associations of people with disabilities. A total of 44 women with LM participated, mostly resident in Principality of Asturias (54.5%) and Basque Country (40.9%), although they have a small representation of women from Valladolid (4.5 %). Results: The significant differences that were found show the highest scores on the depression scale pertain to women who are married and have less schooling. Moreover, the data from the study reflect the existence of individualized processes of adaptation with highly random functioning in terms of the socio-demographic variables, thereby supporting the assumptions on the model of individual differences in the process of adaptation to spinal cord injury. Conclusion: They also suggest therapeutic processes must be sensitive to the appearance of feelings of hopelessness and depression in women with spinal cord injury.

Women continue to lag behind for accessing managerial positions, partially due to discrimination at work. One of the main roots of such discrimination is gender stereotyping, so we aim to comprehend those biased procedures. First, we have analyzed those highlighted gender lawsuit cases in the scientific literature that have dealt with stereotypes both in the American and the European work contexts. Second, meta-analytic studies regarding organizational consequences of gender stereotypes have been synthetized. Third, gender stereotypes have been grouped by means of a content analysis of the existing literature after processing 61 articles systematically retrieved from WOS, SCOPUS, and PsycINFO databases. As a result, a taxonomy of gender stereotypes has been achieved evidencing that descriptive and prescriptive stereotypes have an impact on decision-making procedures through the apparently perception of women as less suitable for managerial positions. Moreover, we offer a deep explanation of the gender discrimination phenomenon under the umbrella of psychosocial theories, and some measures for successfully overcoming management stereotyping, showing that organizational culture can be improved from both the perspective of equal employment opportunities and the organizational justice frameworks for reaching a balanced and healthier workplace.

Este estudio explora la contribución del vínculo de apego al bienestar de las pacientes en tratamiento por cáncer de mama. Su objetivo es aportar conocimientos sobre como favorecer el afrontamiento del cáncer y de las dificultades que suelen concurrir con el. Un total de 58 mujeres que iban a comenzar un tratamiento de radioterapia por cáncer de mama informaron a través de cuestionarios sobre: síntomas y disfunciones relacionados con la enfermedad y el tratamiento, afectos positivos y negativos, bienestar emocional, contrariedades diarias y vínculo de apego. El análisis de regresión revela que el componente Temor al rechazo y al abandono del apego, la presencia de contrariedades -principalmente las económicas- y la presencia de síntomas físicos predicen el grado de bienestar. Los otros dos componentes del apego (Deseo de cercanía y Preferencia por la independencia) no presentan ninguna relación significativa. Contrariamente a lo esperado, la merma de capacidad funcional no predice una disminución del bienestar. Se discute sobre el peso diferencial de las variables medicas y psicosociales en la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud y se concluye la importancia de las intervenciones encaminadas a mejorar el estado emocional durante los tratamientos del cáncer a través de la mejora de las relaciones cercanas.

Background Children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities make up a group which is in urgent need of an adequate operationalisation of the quality of life construct, not only to improve individual personal outcomes but also to develop and implement evidence based practices. For that reason, and with the aim of answering the growing demand for an adequate evaluation instrument for this group, the KidsLife scale was developed. Method This research provides evidence of the reliability and validity of the scale, which is composed of 96 items spread over eight subscales, and completed by a third-party respondent. The validation sample comprised 1060 people with intellectual disability, with ages ranging from 4 to 21 years old (M = 13.51; SD = 5.04). Results The results suggest that the eight quality of life domains assessed on the scale are reliable (Cronbach's alpha ranging from 0.812 to 0.949). The evidence of the validity of the construct provided by Confirmatory Factor Analysis also demonstrated adequate indexes of fit for the eight-domain model. Discussion Future lines of research which may use the KidsLife Scale are suggested and discussed.

espanolEl objetivo principal de esta investigacion es estudiar la relacion ente empatia y delincuencia oficialmente registrada durante la adolescencia. Se llevo a cabo mediante una revision sistematica de todos aquellos estudios obtenidos a traves de diversas estrategias de busqueda. Ademas, se ha incorporado una distincion clave en el campo, a menudo olvidada, diferenciando entre empatia afectiva y cognitiva. Entre los criterios de inclusion se encuentra uno que resulta clave: la presencia de delincuencia registrada como tal por la ley, excluyendo todos aquellos comportamientos vandalicos o de naturaleza antisocial. Como resultado, se obtuvo una muestra de k = 39 estudios primarios para la empatia cognitiva y k = 52 estudios para la afectiva, abarcando mas de 30 anos de investigacion. Los resultados revelan una asociacion moderada entre delincuencia y la dimension cognitiva (r = -.220) y algo mas leve con la dimension afectiva (r = -.140). Se realizo un analisis de moderadores observando que determinadas caracteristicas (tanto sociodemograficas como metodologicas) modulan la intensidad de la asociacion entre empatia y delincuencia. Se discuten las implicaciones para futuras investigaciones asi como su importancia para el desarrollo sociopsicologico de esta poblacion en especifico. EnglishThe primay aim of this review was to study existing knowledge on the relationship between empathy and juvenile official delinquency. We conducted a meta-analytic review taking into account the differences between cognitive empathy and affective empathy. Only those studies based on official delinquency records in the applicable country were included. Therefore, all studies focusing on antisocial behaviors, traits such as aggressiveness and/or behavioral problems were excluded. As a result, we retrieved a total of 39 studies about the relationship between cognitive empathy and delinquency, and 52 studies about the affective empathy. The results found a moderated effect size (r = -.220) in the case of cognitive empathy and quite lower effect size for the affective empathy (r = -.140). We also analyzed a set of moderating variables such as methodologic and sociodemographic variables. These variables have a potential moderating effect. Its importance on future researches as well as on the sociopsychological development of this population are disscussed.

The most commonly used instruments for assessing adult attachment have shown differing combinations of items and divergences in the resulting sub-scales.This study presents the Scale of Preferences and Expectations in Close Interpersonal Relationships ( Escala de Preferencias y Expectativas en las Relaciones Interpersonales Cercanas, EPERIC), made up of 22 items, and based upon the Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ) of Griffin and Bartholomew. Exploratory and confirmatory factorial analyses (EFA and CFA) were undertaken using data from a sample of 594 people.Factor analysis distinguishes three sub-scales: Fear of rejection or abandonment , Desire for closeness and Preference for independence , which explains 42.78% of the total variance. The alpha coefficients reveal a high internal consistency of the instrument and its sub-scales. Regarding validity, CFA showed an adequate fit for the trifactorial solution, and the expected correlations with other instruments for assessing attachment style in adults were found. EPERIC is also suitable for predicting affective states and psychological well-being.The EPERIC is a potentially useful and valid instrument for research and clinical purposes. The discussion focuses on the fact that our results support a model of three factors rather than two, as is usual in studies on adult attachment.

One of the main conditions for a good psychotherapeutic alliance is the agreement on therapeutic tasks and goals. This article explores the kind of help that clients expect from therapeutic sessions. By means of a written questionnaire, the clients of a private psychotherapy center, prior to the sessions, expressed their priorities regarding the work to be carried out in them. The assessment of 873 questionnaires showed that clients prefer to participate in therapeutic work that helps them plan actions, understand what is happening, and assess possibilities for change. Also important are therapeutic tasks that help clients evaluate their own actions, both past and planned. The importance that clients attach to different kinds of help varies above all according to how near they feel to resolving their problems. Nine different kinds of psychotherapeutic tasks are identified, which cover the possible requests a client can make of his/her therapist. This article discusses the clinical application of this model as a basis for planning and classifying psychotherapeutic interventions.

In this anide we expose a new system of analysis of interaction, based on the analogous of demand and offer of objects and the aprehension, conservation and use of instruments, designed to give account of interpersonal ocntrol or processes in the face to face interactions. We give samples of the application of its categories and we offer reliability tests.
