Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have shown great promise for use in photovoltaic devices, due to their ability to offer advantages such as tunability of visible light and efficient light emission. This study demonstrates the successful utilization of a triazine-based PO-T2T (2,4,6-Tris[3(diphenylphosphenyl)phenyl]-1,3,5-triazine; PO-T2T) as the electron transport layer (ETL) through an all-solution process. To improve the structural and optical characterization of CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 QDs, three organic solvents, namely chlorobenzene, methyl acetate, and ethyl acetate, were selected to find an effective orthogonal solvent for PO-T2T. The all-solution processed devices incorporating PO-T2T and Methyl acetate (MeOAc) demonstrated impressive external quantum efficiencies of 5.57% for CsPbBr3 and 1.60% for CsPbI3 QDs. Notably, these devices also achieved the highest maximum luminance among all-solution processed PQDs-LEDs, with values of 33334 cd m–2 for CsPbBr3 and 224 cd m–2 for CsPbI3 QDs.

Abstract Additive manufacturing (AM), known as 3D printing, enables rapid fabrication of geometrically complex copper (Cu) components for electrical conduction and heat management applications. However, pure Cu or Cu alloys produced by 3D printing often suffer from either low strength or low conductivity at room and elevated temperatures. Here, we demonstrate a design strategy for 3D printing of high strength, high conductivity Cu by uniformly dispersing a minor portion of lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) nanoparticles in pure Cu through laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). We show that trace additions of LaB6 to pure Cu results in an improved L-PBF processability, an enhanced strength, an improved thermal stability, all whilst maintaining a high conductivity. The presented strategy could expand the applicability of 3D printed Cu components to more demanding conditions where high strength, high conductivity and thermal stability are required.

Abstract Hydrogen embrittlement reduces the durability of the structural steels required for the hydrogen economy. Understanding how hydrogen interacts with the materials plays a crucial role in managing the embrittlement problems. Theoretical models have indicated that carbon vacancies in metal carbide precipitates are effective hydrogen traps in steels. Increasing the number of carbon vacancies in individual metal carbides is important since the overall hydrogen trapping capacity can be leveraged by introducing abundant metal carbides in steels. To verify this concept, we compare a reference steel containing titanium carbides (TiCs), which lack carbon vacancies, with an experimental steel added with molybdenum (Mo), which form Ti-Mo carbides comprising more carbon vacancies than TiCs. We employ theoretical and experimental techniques to examine the hydrogen trapping behavior of the carbides, demonstrating adding Mo alters the hydrogen trapping mechanism, enabling hydrogen to access carbon vacancy traps within the carbides, leading to an increase in trapping capacity.

5. Exciplex-forming cohost systems with 2,7-dicyanofluorene acceptors for high efficiency red and deep-red OLEDs

Abstract Two 2,7-dicyaonfluorene-based molecules 27-DCN and 27-tDCN are utilized as acceptors (A) to combine with hexaphenylbenzene-centered donors (D) TATT and DDT-HPB for probing the exciplex formation. The photophysical characteristics reveal that the steric hindered 27 -tDCN not only can increase the distance of D and A, resulting in a hypsochromic emission, but also dilute the concentration of triplet excitons to suppress non-radiative process. The 27-tDCN-based exciplex-forming blends exhibit better photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) as compared to those of 27-DCN-based pairs. In consequence, among these D:A blends, the device employing DDT-HPB:27-tDCN blend as the emissiom layer (EML) exhibits the best EQE of 3.0% with electroluminescence (EL) λmax of 542 nm. To further utilize the exciton electrically generated in exciplex-forming system, two D–A–D-configurated fluorescence emitter DTPNT and DTPNBT are doped into the DDT-HPB:27-tDCN blend. The nice spectral overlap ensures fast and efficient Förster energy transfer (FRET) process between the exciplex-forming host and the fluorescent quests. The red device adopting DDT-HPB:27-tDCN:10 wt% DTPNT as the EML gives EL λmax of 660 nm and maximum external quantum efficiency (EQEmax) of 5.8%, while EL λmax of 685 nm and EQE of 5.0% for the EML of DDT-HPB:27-tDCN:10 wt% DTPNBT. This work manifests a potential strategy to achieve high efficiency red and deep red OLED devices by incorporating the highly fluorescent emitters to extract the excitons generated by the exciplex-forming blend with bulky acceptor for suppressing non-radiative process.

Abstract Kesterite is an earth‐abundant energy material with high predicted power conversion efficiency, making it a sustainable and promising option for photovoltaics. However, a large open circuit voltage Voc deficit due to non‐radiative recombination at intrinsic defects remains a major hurdle, limiting device performance. Incorporating Ge into the kesterite structure emerges as an effective approach for enhancing performance by manipulating defects and morphology. Herein, how different amounts of Ge affect the kesterite growth pathways through the combination of advanced microscopy characterization techniques are systematically investigated. The results demonstrate the significance of incorporating Ge during the selenization process of the CZTSSe thin film. At high temperature, the Ge incorporation effectively delays the selenization process due to the formation of a ZnSe layer on top of the metal alloys through decomposition of the Cu‐Zn alloy and formation of Cu‐Sn alloy, subsequently forming of Cu‐Sn‐Se phase. Such an effect is compounded by more Ge incorporation that further postpones kesterite formation. Furthermore, introducing Ge mitigates detrimental “horizontal” grain boundaries by increasing the grain size on upper layer. The Ge incorporation strategy discussed in this study holds great promise for improving device performance and grain quality in CZTSSe and other polycrystalline chalcogenide solar cells.

In recent years, the display information of head-up displays for vehicles has gradually developed from single-depth to multi-depth. To reduce the workload of driving and the number of eye adjustments, researchers use the visual perception of human eyes to realize the image information integrated with the real world. In this study, HoloLens2 is used to demonstrate head-up displays of different depths. An electroencephalogram, an electro-ophthalmogram, and a NASA-TLX questionnaire were used to evaluate the fatigue of drivers during long-term driving. The results showed that a dual-depth head-up display could effectively reduce the driver’s workload.

Objective: Controlling of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains a challenge. Health information technology (HIT) is increasingly being applied to close quality gaps in chronic illness care. The aim of this study was to perform a qualitative review of the association of implementing HIT on lipid management processes of care and LDL-C goal attainment in patients with ACS. Method: Eligible patients with a discharge diagnosis of ACS from January 2018 to December 2021 at a tertiary medical center were retrospectively reviewed. An HIT system with a multidisciplinary approach including initiating high-intensity statin therapy, periodic laboratory follow-up, titration of lipid-lowering agents, patient education, patient-level and system-level interventions involving database monitoring and outreach by centralized care teams was introduced in October 2018. Electronical medical records including data on medications and laboratory findings at discharge and within 1 year were compared before and after implementing the HIT system. Results: A total of 2001 ACS patients (average age 63 ± 12.7 years, 79.66 % men) were analyzed. The LDL-C < 70 mg/dL goal attainment rates (36.52 %, 53.57 %, 59.22 %, 62.18 % in 2018–2021) and medium serum LDL-C levels (80.5 mg/dL, 68 mg/dL, 65 mg/dL, 64 mg/dL in 2018–2021) significantly improved within 6 months (2018 as the reference, all p

Abstract Sources of methylmercury (MeHg) in adult Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis, PBT) from the western North Pacific Ocean (WPO) were examined using mercury stable isotopes. Significant increases in δ202Hg and Δ199Hg values with PBT size and age, along with those of potential prey, indicate a shift in the source of MeHg accumulated by PBT as they age. Among adults from the WPO, this shift likely involves greater accumulation of MeHg from epipelagic prey in the Kuroshio extension in large vs. small and medium‐sized PBT. For all adults, little MeHg is accumulated in the spawning grounds near Taiwan. Significantly lower Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg ratios in adult PBT and their prey from the WPO than from the central and eastern North Pacific indicate different sources or transformations of MeHg prior to accumulation in the WPO food web than further east. Our results show that MeHg sources to oceanic food webs vary across the North Pacific Ocean and regionally within the WPO.

10. Retrospective study: risk assessment model for osteoporosis—a detailed exploration involving 4,552 Shanghai dwellers

Background Osteoporosis, a prevalent orthopedic issue, significantly influences patients’ quality of life and results in considerable financial burden. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a clinical prediction model for osteoporosis risk, utilizing computer algorithms and demographic data. Method In this research, a total of 4,552 residents from Shanghai were retrospectively included. LASSO regression analysis was executed on the sample’s basic characteristics, and logistic regression was employed for analyzing clinical characteristics and building a predictive model. The model’s diagnostic capacity for predicting osteoporosis risk was assessed using R software and computer algorithms. Results The predictive nomogram model for bone loss risk, derived from the LASSO analysis, comprised factors including BMI, TC, TG, HDL, Gender, Age, Education, Income, Sleep, Alcohol Consumption, and Diabetes. The nomogram prediction model demonstrated impressive discriminative capability, with a C-index of 0.908 (training set), 0.908 (validation set), and 0.910 (entire cohort). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of the model was 0.909 (training set), 0.903 (validation set), and applicable to the entire cohort. The decision curve analysis further corroborated that the model could efficiently predict the risk of bone loss in patients. Conclusion The nomogram, based on essential demographic and health factors (Body Mass Index, Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, High-Density Lipoprotein, Gender, Age, Education, Income, Sleep, Alcohol Consumption, and Diabetes), offered accurate predictions for the risk of bone loss within the studied population.

11. Strategy of complex carbides in microalloyed 4Mn steels processed by quenching and austenite reversion

This work describes a strategy to employ complex carbides for high-yield microalloyed 4Mn steels processed by quenching and reversion (Q&R). The nano/microstructural details are investigated by using electron microscopy and atom probe. It is found that complex carbides are classified into two types and contribute to yield strength in different ways. First, coarse carbides (MC1), which are retained after austenization and quenching, provide the Zener pinning effect and contribute to strengthening by microstructure refinement and precipitation hardening. Second, nanoscale carbides (MC2), which precipitate in martensite during austenite reversion, provide precipitation hardening. Furthermore, the precipitation of MC1 accelerates austenite reversion due to the finer martensite microstructure. Hence, the strengthening effects and TRIP effect can be tuned by controlling the proportion of the two types of carbide. This concept is validated in Ti-Mo 4Mn steel, which exhibits a high yield strength of about 850 MPa, a high ultimate tensile strength of about 950 MPa, and excellent elongation of over 20%. The complex carbide strategy is able to increase yield strength without sacrificing much ductility for Q&R medium-Mn steels.

12. Risk of urinary tract infection symptoms recurrence in women: A prospective observational study

Objectives: Urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms recurrence is common with estimated rate of 30%–50% within 1 year. The study aimed to evaluate the potential risk factors for symptoms UTI recurrence in women at outpatient clinic in a prospective fashion. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2019. Women who visited urological clinics with symptoms suggestive of UTI were invited to fill the questionnaire including baseline characteristics and Urinary Tract Infection Symptom Assessment questionnaire. Mid-stream urine samples of the participants were collected for urine analysis and urine culture. Phone interviews were done at 12 months' postclinic visit to inquire if the participants have any episode of UTI symptoms recurrence during the period of time. Results: Among the 188 eligible patients, 183 patients (age = 50.0 ± 15.3 years old) were included in the analysis. There were 44 (24%) participants had UTI symptoms recurrent episodes during the 12-month follow-up. Further multivariate analysis revealed that menopause (odds ratio [OR] = 4.89, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.63–14.68, P = 0.005), history of UTI-related symptoms within 1 year before the episode OR = 3.79, 95% CI = 1.29–11.15, P = 0.016) and Escherichia coli infection (OR = 4.81, 95% CI = 1.51-15.28, P = 0.008) were significant risk factors for UTI symptoms recurrence during the 12 months' follow-up. Conclusion: Menopause, history of UTI-related symptoms within 1 year before this episode of UTI and E. coli infection in 12 months were potential risk factors for UTIs symptoms recurrence in women.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) is a common cancer with high mortality. This study aimed to identify its differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using bioinformatics methods.Methods: DEGs were screened from four GEO (Gene Expression Omnibus) gene expression profiles. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses were performed. A protein–protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed. Expression and prognosis were assessed. Meta-analysis was conducted to further validate prognosis. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was analyzed to identify diagnostic markers, and a nomogram was developed. Exploration of drugs and immune cell infiltration analysis were conducted.Results: Nine up-regulated and three down-regulated hub genes were identified, with close relations to gastric functions, extracellular activities, and structures. Overexpressed Collagen Type VIII Alpha 1 Chain (COL8A1), Collagen Type X Alpha 1 Chain (COL10A1), Collagen Triple Helix Repeat Containing 1 (CTHRC1), and Fibroblast Activation Protein (FAP) correlated with poor prognosis. The area under the curve (AUC) of ADAM Metallopeptidase With Thrombospondin Type 1 Motif 2 (ADAMTS2), COL10A1, Collagen Type XI Alpha 1 Chain (COL11A1), and CTHRC1 was >0.9. A nomogram model based on CTHRC1 was developed. Infiltration of macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells positively correlated with COL8A1, COL10A1, CTHRC1, and FAP. Meta-analysis confirmed poor prognosis of overexpressed CTHRC1.Conclusion: ADAMTS2, COL10A1, COL11A1, and CTHRC1 have diagnostic values in GC. COL8A1, COL10A1, CTHRC1, and FAP correlated with worse prognosis, showing prognostic and therapeutic values. The immune cell infiltration needs further investigations.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to compare the performance of the new flow cytometer UF-5000 with the UF-1000i and Gram staining for determining bacterial patterns in urine samples. Methods Women who attended our clinic with symptoms suggestive of urinary tract infection were enrolled in the study. Mid-stream urine samples were collected for gram staining, urine analysis and urine cultures. Bacterial patterns were classified using the UF-1000i (none, cocci bacteria or rods/mixed growth), the UF-5000 (none, cocci, rods or mixed growth) and Gram staining. Results Among the 102 included samples, there were 10 g-positive cocci, 2 g-positive bacilli, 66 g-negative rods, and 24 mixed growth. The sensitivity/specificity of the UF-1000i was 81.8/91.1% for gram-negative rods and 23.5/96.9% for cocci/mixed. The sensitivity/specificity of the UF-5000 was 80.0/88.2% for gram negative rods and 70.0/86.5% for gram-positive cocci. Conclusions The UF-5000 demonstrated good sensitivity and specificity for Gram-negative bacilli and demonstrated an improved sensitivity for detecting Gram-positive cocci compared with the UF-1000i.

17. Clinical performance of cell-free fetal DNA testing for fetal aneuploidies and subchromosomal deletions/duplications in a cohort of 19,531 pregnancies

Objective: We aim to assess the clinical performance of cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) testing for detecting common fetal aneuploidies as well as subchromosomal deletions/duplications and explore the pregnancy decisions in screen-positive cases. Methods: A cohort of 19,531 pregnant women was offered cffDNA testing for detection of trisomies 21, 18, and 13 (T21, T18, and T13); sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs); and subchromosomal deletions/duplications. Screen-positive cases were confirmed by karyotyping and single-nucleotide polymorphism array analysis. Results: A total of 47 cases failed the test. The overall screen-positive rate of chromosomal abnormalities was 1.07% (208/19,484), including 57 cases with T21, 18 cases with T18, 7 cases with T13, 106 cases with SCAs, and 20 cases of subchromosomal deletions/duplications. Positive predictive values were 91.30% (42/46), 38.46% (5/13), 33.33% (2/6), 41.33% (31/75), and 27.78% (5/18), respectively. There was no significant difference in the screening of fetal chromosomal aneuploidies in the high-risk group compared with the low-risk group (P > 0.05). All of the pregnant women who had confirmed fetal T21, T18, or T13 terminated their pregnancies, except for a case of T13 mosaic, whereas 45.16% (14/31) of women with fetal SCAs continued their pregnancies. Furthermore, 17 pregnant women with positive screens for T21, T18, or T13 without a subsequent diagnosis chose to terminate their pregnancy, whereas 29 of 31 women with SCAs chose to continue their pregnancies. Conclusions: CffDNA testing exhibited good screening accuracy for T21, T18, and T13 and also contributed to detecting fetal SCAs and subchromosomal deletions/duplications. Pregnant women with fetal 47, XXX or 47, XYY were more willing to terminate their pregnancy than those with fetal 45, X or 47, XXY.

An unusual iridium dimer 1, [(4-cpbo)Ir(μ-Cl)(μ-O)Ir(4-cpbo)] (4-cpbo = 4-chlorophenylbenzoxazolato-N,C2), was obtained by the oxidative addition of oxygen and reductive elimination of chlorine from a precursor [(4-cpbo)2Ir(μ-Cl)]2. This iridium dimer 1 has a metastable structure with an asymmetric bridge, can spontaneously release metalloradicals and coordinatively unsaturated species in solution at room temperature, and exhibits high catalytic ability for synthetic applications.

19. Second repair of pediatric inguinal hernia: A longitudinal cohort study

Background: The objective of this nationwide observational study was to report the rate and risk factors for the second repair after pediatric inguinal herniorrhaphy. Materials and Methods: Children born from 1998 to 2005 were chosen from a cohort of 1,000,000 cases, which were randomly selected from an insured population of 23 million people in Taiwan (Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2005). We identified all hernia repairs in the period of 1998–2012 for the sample population and then used a Cox proportional hazards regression model to analyze the risk factors for the second repair after pediatric inguinal herniorrhaphy. Results: The total sample population comprised 79,820 children, with a male-to-female ratio of 4.27:1. During a mean observation period of 11.4 ± 2.2 years, 3339 (4.18%) of the children in the sample population received primary inguinal hernia repair. Of the 251 children (7.52%) who underwent a second repair, 220 were boys (8.13%) and 31 were girls (4.9%); 244 (8.62%) underwent primary unilateral hernia repair, and 7 (1.38%) underwent primary bilateral hernia repair. Considering that bilateral hernia involves unilateral hernia on two sides, the expected recurrence rate after primary unilateral hernia repair was calculated as 0.69%. The calculated rates for late occurrence of contralateral hernia after primary unilateral hernia repair were 11.04%, 7.73%, and 3.28% for children aged 0–1, 1–4, and >4 years, respectively. Significant risk factors for second hernia repair were age at first primary hernia repair and unilateral hernia (P < 0.001). Gender and prematurity were not risk factors for second hernia repair. To increase the productivity of injection molding machines, we developed a smart injection part weight stability control system based on C++ programming and domain knowledge. The proposed system is meant to eliminate variability in the quality of injected parts by adjusting the changeover position. We developed a viscosity index based on melt pressure data related to guide the adjustment to the changeover position in accordance with material properties. This was achieved by mounting a pressure sensor on the nozzle of the injection molding machine to enable the on-line monitoring of pressure throughout the injection molding process. A series of experiments was conducted to characterize the relationship between viscosity index and injection-molded samples in order to validate the efficacy of the proposed injection stability system. Single-factor experiments were conducted with the changeover position and melt temperature as parameters. The quality of the molded samples obtained under different process parameters was evaluated in terms of weight. Experiment results revealed a correlation between changes in viscosity index and changes in the weight of the samples. The injection stability system can also be operated in self-adjusting mode, in which the changeover position is varied according to viscosity index. In experiments, abnormal machine operations prompted the adjustment of changeover position. Variation in the weight of parts was used to define an index to validate the efficacy of the proposed system.

We evaluated the physiological and antioxidant characteristics of Arabidopsis thaliana (At) plants grown in different sea water (SW) products containing trace elements, namely RO3, 300K, and 340K, at various dilutions. The synthetic water (namely 300K-Test), a mixture of the main ions of SW including 143.08 mg L-1 Mg2+, 5.74 mg L-1 Na+, 170 mg L-1 K+, and 33.5 mg L-1 Ca2+ with equal concentrations to those in 300K SW without trace elements, was also used to culture At plants and study the influences that the major ions had on regulating ethylene production. The ethylene-biosynthesis (ACS7 and ACO2) and senescence-associated (NAP, SAG113, and WRKY6) gene expressions in SW- and ionic-treated At plants in response to transcriptional signaling pathways of ethylene response mechanisms were also investigated. Our results show that down-regulation of the ACS7 gene in 300K-treated plants significantly reduced the ethylene content but remarkably increased chlorophyll, total phenol, and DPPH radical scavenging accumulations and strengthened the salt tolerance of 300K-treated plants. The expression of the ACS7 gene of At plants under 300K, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Na+ treatments was correlated with decreases in NAP, SAG113, and WRKY6 gene expressions. The application of Ca2+ increased total phenol content and reduced the accumulation of superoxide, which in combination decreases plant aging brought on by ethylene. However, K+ treatment inhibited SGA113 gene expression, resulting in reducing ACS7 gene expression and ethylene content. The characterization and functional analysis of these genes should facilitate our understanding of ethylene response mechanisms in plants.

Background To create a nomogram prediction model for the efficacy of endoscopic nasal septoplasty, and the likelihood of patient benefiting from the operation. Methods A retrospective analysis of 155 patients with nasal septum deviation (NSD) was performed to develop a predictive model for the efficacy of endoscopic nasal septoplasty. Quality of life (QoL) data was collected before and after surgery using Sinonasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) scores to evaluate the surgical outcome. An effective surgical outcome was defined as a SNOT-22 score change ≥ 9 points after surgery. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was then used to establish a predictive model for the NSD treatment. The predictive quality and clinical utility of the predictive model were assessed by C-index, calibration plots, and decision curve analysis. Results The identified risk factors for inclusion in the predictive model were included. The model had a good predictive power, with a AUC of 0.920 in the training group and a C index of 0.911 in the overall sample. Decision curve analysis revealed that the prediction model had a good clinical applicability. Conclusions Our prediction model is efficient in predicting the efficacy of endoscopic surgery for NSD through evaluation of factors including: history of nasal surgery, preoperative SNOT-22 score, sinusitis, middle turbinate plasty, BMI, smoking, follow-up time, seasonal allergies, and advanced age. Therefore, it can be cost-effective for individualized preoperative assessment.

Purpose To develop a risk prediction model for postoperative sarcopenia in elderly patients with patellar fractures in China. Patients and methods We conducted a community survey of patients aged ≥55 years who underwent surgery for patellar fractures between January 2013 and October 2018, through telephone interviews, community visits, and outpatient follow-up. We established a predictive model for assessing the risk of sarcopenia after patellar fractures. We developed the prediction model by combining multivariate logistic regression analysis with the least absolute shrinkage model and selection operator regression (lasso analysis) as well as the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm. Atom probe tomography (APT) is an emerging microscopy technique that has high sensitivity for hydrogen with sub-nanometre-scale spatial resolution, which makes it a unique method to investigate the atomic-scale distribution of hydrogen at interfaces and defects in materials. This article introduces the basics of APT-based hydrogen analysis, particularly the challenge of distinguishing a hydrogen background signal in APT by using hydrogen isotopes, along with strategies to yield high-quality analysis. This article also reviews several important findings on hydrogen distribution in a range of materials, including both structural alloys and functional materials, enabled by using APT. Limitations and future opportunities for hydrogen analysis by APT are also discussed.

30. In Situ Redox Synthesis of Highly Stable Au/Electroactive Polyimide Composite and Its Application on 4-Nitrophenol Reduction

In this study, we developed a series of Au/electroactive polyimide (Au/EPI-5) composite for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP) using NaBH4 as a reducing agent at room temperature. The electroactive polyimide (EPI-5) synthesis was performed by chemical imidization of its 4,4′-(4.4′-isopropylidene-diphenoxy) bis (phthalic anhydride) (BSAA) and amino-capped aniline pentamer (ACAP). In addition, prepare different concentrations of Au ions through the in-situ redox reaction of EPI-5 to obtain Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and anchored on the surface of EPI-5 to form series of Au/EPI-5 composite. Using SEM and HR-TEM confirm the particle size (23–113 nm) of the reduced AuNPs increases with the increase of the concentration. Based on CV studies, the redox capability of as-prepared electroactive materials was found to show an increase trend: 1Au/EPI-5 < 3Au/EPI-5 < 5Au/EPI-5. The series of Au/EPI-5 composites showed good stability and catalytic activity for the reaction of 4-NP to 4-AP. Especially, the 5Au/EPI-5 composite shows the highest catalytic activity when applied for the reduction of 4-NP to 4-AP within 17 min. The rate constant and kinetic activity energy were calculated to be 1.1 × 10−3 s−1 and 38.9 kJ/mol, respectively. Following a reusability test repeated 10 times, the 5Au/EPI-5 composite maintained a conversion rate higher than 95%. Finally, this study elaborates the mechanism of the catalytic reduction of 4-NP to 4-AP.

Young watermelon fruit was peeled and pickled for fermentation to produce a unique fermented food named xi-gua-mian (fermented watermelon) in Taiwan. In this study, we investigated the LAB microflora in xi-gua-mian. A total of 176 LAB isolates were identified; 118 cultures were isolated from the xi-gua-mian sample collected from three different farmers markets and 58 from six young watermelon fruit samples. These isolates were characterized phenotypically and then divided into seven groups (A to G) by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis, sequencing of 16S ribosomal DNA and other genotypic analysis. Lactobacillus plantarum was the most abundant LAB found in xi-gua-mian samples collected in southern Taiwan, Tainan City and Pediococcuspentosaceus was the most abundant LAB in northern Taiwan, Taoyuan County. We found that LAB stains are similar in samples collected in the same geographic region but significant variationswere observed between samples collected among different regions. On the other hand, a greater LAB diversity was observed in the young watermelon fruit samples. In addition, 10 Lactococcuslactis subsp. lactis showed inhibitory activity against the indicator strain L. sakei subsp. sakei JCM 1157T. This is the first report describing the distribution and varieties of LAB existing in the xi-gua-mian and the young watermelon fruits.

Two bipolar molecules CzT2.1 and CzT2.2 are examined as electron acceptors to form exciplexes with electron donors 1,1-bis[(di-4-tolylamino)phenyl]cyclohexane (TAPC) and 4,4’,4’’-tris(carbazol-9-yl)-triphenylamine (TCTA), respectively. The bipolar structural feature endows 1-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-9-(4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-9H-carbazole (CzT2.1) and 1-(4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-9-(4-(4,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole (CzT2.2) with hole- and electron-transporting properties, as well as the possibility of forming charge transfer emissive states. An aggregation-induced emission (AIE) protocol was employed to quickly screen the feasibility of exciplex formation of four donor (D):acceptor (A) blends as nanoparticles dispersed in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution containing a high portion of water. Then, the vacuum-deposited D:A blended films were analyzed with steady and dynamic photophysical characterizations. The observed results indicate that the emissions of the D:A blends are contributed from the bipolar acceptor as well as the exciplex system. The proportion for each contribution relies on the exciplex formation efficiency and the intrinsic relaxation behavior of the bipolar acceptor. The D:A blends employing a stronger donor (TAPC) give a higher propensity of forming exciplexes as compared to those of counterparts with a weaker donor TCTA. The green device (EL λmax = 537 nm) with TAPC:CzT2.1 exciplex-forming blend as the emitting layer exhibits a high maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 12.5% (39.2 cd A−1, 41.4 lm W−1) and limited efficiency roll-off (12.5%, 34.8 cd A−1, 39.1 lm W−1 at 100 cd m−2) owing to the fast decay lifetimes of the exciplex. The green exciplex-based device (EL λmax = 514 nm) adopting TAPC:CzT2.2 blend as the emitting layer offers an even higher EQE of 15.0% (45.7 cd A−1, 50.0 lm W−1), yet suffers a limited efficiency roll-off (14.3%, 43.6 cd A−1, 45.0 lm W−1 at 100 cd m−2) due to the prolonged decay lifetimes of the emissive components. This works highlights the use of emissive bipolar acceptors to create exciplex emission channels working together with the inherent acceptor emission for enhancing the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) device performance.

A Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, catalase-negative, fructose-dependent strain (W13T) was isolated from the gut of honeybee (Apis mellifera). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing indicated that strain W13T represents a distinct line of descent within the genus Fructobacillus , with the closest neighbours being Fructobacillus broussonetiae BCRC 81240T (98.9 % sequence similarity) and Fructobacillus durionis DSM 19113T (96.8 % sequence similarity). Comparative sequencing of the additional phylogenetic markers rpoC and recA confirmed the 16S rRNA gene tree topology. The complete genome of strain W13T consisted of 1 292 712 bp with a G+C content of 48.3 mol%. Pairwise comparisons of the average nucleotide identity values and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values between the genomes of W13T and its close phylogenetic neighbours, F. broussonetiae BCRC 81240T and F. durionis DSM 19113T, resulted in 76.2–84.1 % and 20.2–27.6 %, respectively. The main cellular fatty acids of strain W13T were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c and C18 : 1 ω7c. Thus, we propose a novel species within the genus Fructobacillus , with the name Fructobacillus apis sp. nov. and the type strain is W13T (= NBRC 115637T=BCRC 81365T).

An on-line flow injection mercury analyser (FIMA) for inorganic mercury (Hg) analysis in environmental waters is presented. The FIMA is a portable dual-channel and purge-and-trap system combining aqueous reduction with stannous chloride (SnCl2), two-stage gold (Au) amalgamation, thermal desorption of Hg0 and final detection with cold vapour atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CVAFS). Simultaneous on-line operations of sample loading and analysis make analytical throughput and accuracy improved and contamination eliminated. Results of system optimisation and reliability regarding the determination of inorganic Hg2+ are described. Analytical performances of both channels were the same in terms of data reliability. Low procedural blanks were obtained from laboratory and field trip (≤5 pg, n = 30). Excellent calibrations (r2 > 0.99) with a high precision and good stability (RSD −1 and −1, n = 30). The system was finally validated by measurements comparison of the two channels (r2 > 0.98), and analysis of a certified reference material (coastal seawater BCR-579, recoveries 101 ± 4%, n = 10). Overall, a sample throughput of ~10 samples per hour with two-channel detections of FIMA can be achieved. The onboard analysis of inorganic Hg species (e.g. elemental, reactive, and total Hg) in surface seawaters of the East China Sea (ECS) are also successfully achieved. The portable FIMA is fast, easy, and robust for reliable monitoring of Hg in natural seawaters.

Sequences targeted at the V3 and V4 16S rRNA hypervariable regions of a streptococcal strain (P1L01T) isolated from vaginal swabs of a pregnant woman with diabetes were 100% similar to those of Streptococcus anginosus subsp. whileyi. However, phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA full-gene sequencing (1562 bp) revealed highest sequence similarity to Streptococcus periodonticum (98.7%), followed by Streptococcus anginosus subsp. whileyi (98.7%), and Streptococcus anginosus subsp. anginosus (98.4%). Phylogenies of housekeeping genes rpoB and groEL were compared to improve classification, and the results showed a clear separation between strain P1L01T and closely related Streptococcus type strains. The complete genome of strain P1L01T consisted of 2,108,769 bp with a G + C content of 38.5 mol%. Average nucleotide identity values, based on genome sequencing, between strain P1L01T and Streptococcus periodonticum KCOM 2412T, Streptococcus anginosus subsp. whileyi CCUG 39159T, and Streptococcus anginosus subsp. anginosus NCTC 10713T were 95.5%, 94.3%, and 95.3%, respectively. The highest in silico DNA–DNA hybridization value with respect to the closest species was 66.2%, i.e., below the species cutoff of 70% hybridization. The main cellular fatty acids of strain P1L01T were 16:0, 18:1ω7c, and 14:0. On the basis of phylogenetic, genotypic and phenotypic data, we propose to classify this isolate as representative of a novel species of the genus Streptococcus, Streptococcus vaginalis sp. nov., in reference to its isolation from vaginal swabs, with strain P1L01T (= NBRC 114754T = BCRC 81289T) as the type strain.

44. Very Low Stocks and Inputs of Necromass in Wind-affected Tropical Forests

The relationships between climate and forest dynamics can help us to interpret patterns of ecosystem carbon and to predict how forests react to climatic changes. We report mass dynamics of deadwood (necromass) from tropical forest ecosystems subject to some of the highest frequency of tropical cyclones in the world and to regular, persistent seasonal monsoon winds. Plots that are influenced by typhoons but exposed to different degrees of monsoon winds were monitored. We expected that stocks and inputs of necromass would reflect the seasonal intensity of wind events and be higher in the high wind exposure forest than in the low wind exposure forest, especially for fallen woody debris. The results showed that necromass input was indeed influenced by the magnitude of typhoons and aggravated by monsoon winds. However, while there was no significant difference in stock of necromass between plots, inputs of standing necromass were significantly higher in the high wind exposure plot; these were mostly derived from dead resprouts. Both our forests had very low values of total necromass stocks (3.47–4.32 Mg C ha−1) and inputs (2.1–2.5 Mg C ha−1 y−1) compared with tropical forests worldwide. Our results show that both monsoon and typhoon winds shape these tropical forests, favouring low stature individuals and trees with ability to resprout and that these strategies provide these forests with remarkable resistance and resilience to wind disturbances. Our findings from some of the most wind-affected forests in the world indicate how woody carbon dynamics and forest structure in other regions may respond to future changes in the frequency and intensity of winds.

This article describes the switchable fluorescence of a series of donor–acceptor type 2,2′-bipyridines. The original bipyridine molecules have four protonation sites – two on the amino donor sites and two on the pyridine acceptor cores. These nitrogen-containing sites are selectively protonated by suitable acids and the protonation influences the electronic conjugation and structure of the chromophores. Consequently, the emission characteristics of the molecules are affected, and this behaviour is reversible, i.e. the neutral original species are regenerated by the addition of an equivalent amount of base. The switchable behaviour of these compounds is accompanied by a visible colour change of the relevant solutions.
