Black African students are increasingly choosing the United States as their preferred destination, and many choose to study at predominantly White institutions (PWIs). The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate reasons that may influence their identification and commitment to those PWIs. We interviewed 20 sub-Saharan Africans at two predominantly White Southeastern universities. Findings revealed that construed external image, overall satisfaction with the school, promotion of the institution, and willingness to maintain membership shape the extent to which Black African students are identified and committed to their university of choice. Furthermore, the study also found that prestige does not appear to influence Sub-Saharan African students' identification and commitment to a school in the United States, but race has mixed effects depending on how it gets interpreted by students. These findings suggest implications for research and practice for student affairs professionals to better serve and retain their international populations.

The pyrolysis of waste tyres can recycle energy and produce reusable products (oil, char and gas). Although there are many reviews in the literature in regard to the pyrolysis characteristics of waste tyres, but this paper critically looked as pyrolysis char as one of the useful product. Its physical characteristics include pore diameter, pore volume, specific surface area, and composition. The common detection techniques of the physical characteristics include elemental analysis, proximate analysis, SEM, EDS, TGA, XRF, BET, and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical characteristics of tyre char mainly include calorific value, the surface functional groups (i.e phenols, alcohols, carboxylic acid and C-O/C-O-C chemical structures) which can be determined by FT-IR, XRD. The higher sulfur retention on the surface of tyre char is obtained at low temperature compared with that obtained at high temperature. Tyre char could also be directly used as a catalyst material to decrease the operational cost, and improve the quality of pyrolysis oil and gas. The modified tyre char with high specific surface area and lower ash content could be used as an activated carbon adsorbent material, catalyst and catalyst support, capacitor electrode to create higher commercial value, as an adsorbent, in batteries and so on. It is suggested that the recycling applications of tyre char should be developed, which can create a high level of potential economic prospects for the waste tyre pyrolysis industry.

Invasive insects threaten ecosystem stability, public health, and food security. Documenting newly invasive species and understanding how they reach into new territories, establish populations, and interact with other species remain vitally important. Here, we report on the invasion of the South American leafhopper, Curtara insularis into Africa, where it has established populations in Ghana, encroaching inland at least 350 km off the coast. Importantly, 80% of the specimens collected were intercepted between 160 and 190 m above ground. Further, the fraction of this species among all insects collected was also higher at altitude, demonstrating its propensity to engage in high-altitude windborne dispersal. Its aerial densities at altitude translate into millions of migrants/km over a year, representing massive propagule pressure. Given the predominant south-westerly winds, these sightings suggest an introduction of C. insularis into at least one of the Gulf of Guinea ports. To assess the contribution of windborne dispersal to its spread in a new territory, we examine records of C. insularis range-expansion in the USA. Reported first in 2004 from central Florida, it reached north Florida (Panhandle) by 2008–2011 and subsequently spread across the southeastern and south-central US. Its expansion fits a “diffusion-like” process with 200—300 km long “annual displacement steps”—a pattern consistent with autonomous dispersal rather than vehicular transport. Most “steps” are consistent with common wind trajectories from the nearest documented population, assuming 2—8 hours of wind-assisted flight at altitude. Curtara insularis has been intercepted at US ports and on trucks. Thus, it uses multiple dispersal modalities, yet its rapid overland spread is better explained by its massive propagule pressure linked with its high-altitude windborne dispersal. We propose that high-altitude windborne dispersal is common yet under-appreciated in invasive insect species.

The goals of this study are to assess the viability of waste tire-derived char (WTDC) as a sustainable, low-cost fine aggregate surrogate material for asphalt mixtures and to develop the statistically coupled neural network (SCNN) model for predicting volumetric and Marshall properties of asphalt mixtures modified with WTDC. The study is based on experimental data acquired from laboratory volumetric and Marshall properties testing on WTDC-modified asphalt mixtures (WTDC-MAM). The input variables comprised waste tire char content and asphalt binder content. The output variables comprised mixture unit weight, total voids, voids filled with asphalt, Marshall stability, and flow. Statistical coupled neural networks were utilized to predict the volumetric and Marshall properties of asphalt mixtures. For predictive modeling, the SCNN model is employed, incorporating a three-layer neural network and preprocessing techniques to enhance accuracy and reliability. The optimal network architecture, using the collected dataset, was a 2:6:5 structure, and the neural network was trained with 60% of the data, whereas the other 20% was used for cross-validation and testing respectively. The network employed a hyperbolic tangent (tanh) activation function and a feed-forward backpropagation. According to the results, the network model could accurately predict the volumetric and Marshall properties. The predicted accuracy of SCNN was found to be as high value ​>98% and low prediction errors for both volumetric and Marshall properties. This study demonstrates WTDC's potential as a low-cost, sustainable aggregate replacement. The SCNN-based predictive model proves its efficiency and versatility and promotes sustainable practices.

Objective This study aimed to assess the prevalence and risk factors for neonatal sepsis among neonates admitted to selected health facilities in the Bamako district and Koulikoro region in Mali.Design This is a prospective cross-sectional study. Data were analyses using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression.Setting This facility-based study was conducted in four health facilities consisting of two hospitals and two reference health centres in Mali.Participants The study participants comprised 795 randomly selected neonates and their indexed mother.Outcome measures The primary outcome of the study was the prevalence of sepsis in the considered health facilities. BackgroundRoutine epidemiological data are essential for monitoring the effectiveness of preventive chemotherapy (PC), optimizing resource allocation, and addressing the evolving needs in the elimination of soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH). This study assesses the prevalence, intensity, and associated risk factors of STH following five rounds of albendazole-based PC in three implementation units (IUs) in Ondo State, Nigeria.MethodologyFresh stool samples were collected from 2,093 children aged 5-14 years across 45 systematically selected schools in three IUs: Ese-Odo, Irele, and Ile-Oluji. The samples were analyzed using the Kato-Katz technique. Additionally, standardized questionnaires were administered to gather data on demographics and access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) resources. Data analysis was conducted using R software version 4.3.2, with a 95% confidence interval.Principal findings/conclusionsThe parasitological data indicated a significant decline in the aggregated prevalence of STH across the three IUs. In Ese-Odo, the prevalence decreased to 25.8% (95% CI: 23.0-29.0) from 39% at baseline (d = -34%, p = 0.00). In Irele, prevalence dropped to 9.7% (95% CI: 7.6-12.0) from 51.3% at baseline (d = -81%, p = 0.00), and in Ile-Oluji, prevalence was reduced to 6.4% (95% CI: 4.6-8.7) from 23% at baseline (d = -72.2%, p = 0.00). The most prevalent STH species was Ascaris lumbricoides, with infection rates of 25.5%, 9.4%, and 6.4% in Ese-Odo, Irele, and Ile-Oluji, respectively, followed by Trichuris trichiura in Ese-Odo (2.7%) and Irele (0.4%), while hookworm infections were detected only in Irele (0.7%). The majority of infections were of low intensity in Ese-Odo (91.0%), Irele (96.8%), and Ile-Oluji (100%). Access to improved sanitation (17.7%, 54.9%, and 58.2%), improved water sources (24.5%, 66.1%, and 69.8%), and handwashing facilities (9.0%, 39.6%, and 25.4%) was suboptimal and significantly varied across Ese-Odo, Irele, and Ile-Oluji, respectively (p < 0.05). Open defecation rates were high in Ese-Odo (54.2%), Irele (36.3%), and Ile-Oluji (34.3%). In Ese-Odo, significant risk factors for STH infection included the use of hand-pump boreholes (AOR: 2.44, 95% CI: 1.23-4.88, p = 0.01), unprotected dug wells (AOR: 3.25, 95% CI: 0.96-11.36, p = 0.06), ventilated improved pit latrines (AOR: 3.95, 95% CI: 1.13-16.1, p = 0.04), pit latrines without a slab (AOR: 2.19, 95% CI: 1.27-3.8, p = 0.01), and failure to use soap after defecation, both when soap was available (AOR: 12.09, 95% CI: 1.86-112.97, p = 0.01) and when soap was unavailable (AOR: 8.19, 95% CI: 1.73-76.65, p = 0.04). In Irele, access to protected dug wells was marginally significant (AOR: 1.79, 95% CI: 0.96-3.21, p = 0.06), while in Ile-Oluji, access to river water emerged as a significant risk factor (AOR: 7.97, 95% CI: 1.81-58.58, p = 0.02). The use of rainwater was found to be protective across all three IUs. These findings demonstrate significant progress in reducing STH prevalence across the three IUs following PC interventions. However, the data underscores the need for enhanced efforts to improve access to and use of WASH facilities to achieve STH elimination.

Knowledge of insect dispersal is relevant to the control of agricultural pests, vector-borne transmission of human and veterinary pathogens, and insect biodiversity. Previous studies in a malaria endemic area of the Sahel region in West Africa revealed high-altitude, long-distance migration of insects and various mosquito species. The objective of the current study was to assess whether similar behavior is exhibited by mosquitoes and other insects around the Lake Victoria basin region of Kenya in East Africa. Insects were sampled monthly from dusk to dawn over 1 year using sticky nets suspended on a tethered helium-filled balloon. A total of 17,883 insects were caught on nets tethered at 90, 120, and 160 m above ground level; 818 insects were caught in control nets. Small insects (0.5 cm, n = 2,334) and mosquitoes (n = 299). Seven orders were identified; dipteran was the most common. Barcoding molecular assays of 184 mosquitoes identified 7 genera, with Culex being the most common (65.8%) and Anopheles being the least common (5.4%). The survival rate of mosquitoes, experimentally exposed to high-altitude overnight, was significantly lower than controls maintained in the laboratory (19% vs. 85%). There were no significant differences in mosquito survival and oviposition rate according to capture height. These data suggest that windborne dispersal activity of mosquito vectors of malaria and other diseases occurs on a broad scale in sub-Saharan Africa.

Introduction: To report independently the sociodemographic and lifestyle parameters, the associations of fruit and vegetables intakes with blood HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), in men and women living in high consumption areas of Burkina Faso. Methods: This was a cross-sectional secondary analysis using data from the first WHO Stepwise Approach to Surveillance (STEPS) survey conducted in Burkina Faso. The “Centre-Ouest” and “Nord” regions of Burkina Faso are identified as the areas of high fruit and vegetables consumption. Data from 602 adults living in these two regions and surveyed with the STEPS method were used. Descriptive and association analyses were performed. Results: Participants with a typical daily intake of at least two portions were 20.4 % (14.7 % in men, vs 25.6 % in women, p = 0.001) for fruit and 30.1 % (25.9 % in men, vs 33.9 % in women, p = 0.03) for vegetables. Prevalence of low blood HDL-C was 72.6 % (71.3 % in men and 73.7 % in women, p = 0.51). In logistic regressions, the daily intake of at least two portions of fruits but not at least two portions of vegetables, was associated with low odds for low HDL-C among men (aOR = 0.34, CI95 %: 0.17–0.69) and women (aOR = 0.35, CI95 %: 0.18–0.71). Similarly, the daily intake of at least three portions of fruits but not vegetables was significantly associated with low odds for low HDL-C. Conclusion: Blood HDL-C levels could be improved by eating at least two or three portions of fruit, which appears to be an achievable goal in study area. Such health benefits should not be ignored and missed.

This study presented various types of soliton solutions for the nonlinear integrable Kairat-X equation by utilizing the improved F-expansion technique with symbolic computational software Mathematica. Explored results for the nonlinear integrable Kairat-X equation are interesting, novel, and more general with different physical structures of solitary waves and solitons, such as kink wave, mixed dark–bright, peakon, anti-kink wave, bright, anti-kink dark, periodic, and dark solitons. With numerical simulations, the secured soliton solutions visualized in two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and contour graphs represent the physical phenomena of the demonstrated results. The explored soliton solutions will be helpful to comprehend interesting physical structures in fiber optics, nonlinear optics, ferromagnetic dynamics, and many other scientific fields. The extracted soliton structure sheds light that the enhanced technique is effective, powerful, concise, and reliable. We can also investigate the soliton results of other nonlinear integrable partial and fractional equations.

Abstract Fingerprint database clustering and localization using k‐medoids and k‐nearest neighbour (k‐NN) algorithms respectively typically use distance‐based fingerprint similarity metrics, with their performances dependent on the type of distance metric used. This paper proposes employing a pattern‐based metric, the context similarity coefficient (CSC), for both algorithms instead of traditional distance‐based metrics. The CSC accounts for fingerprint behaviour and the non‐linear relationships among fingerprints during the similarity measurement. The performance of both algorithms with the CSC as the similarity metric is evaluated on four publicly available fingerprint databases, using position root mean square error (RMSE) and silhouette score as performance metrics. These results are compared to those of the same algorithms using five distance‐based metrics: Euclidean, square Euclidean, Manhattan, cosine, and Chebyshev distances. The k‐medoids algorithm with CSC shows moderate clustering performance compared to the five distance‐based metrics considered. However, when combined with the k‐NN algorithm also using CSC, it achieves the highest localization accuracy, with at least a 29% improvement in position RMSE across all four databases. The results indicate that while k‐medoids with CSC may not create well‐separated clusters, combining it with the k‐NN algorithm with CSC as its similarity metric significantly enhances localization accuracy compared to distance‐based metrics.

The aim of the present work is to optimize the corrosion inhibition process of low-carbon steel in 2.5 M phosphoric acid at different temperatures and inhibitor concentrations. The weight loss method is used to evaluate the corrosion rate in the absence or presence of a corrosion inhibitor. Taguchi dynamic (L16), mathematical regression, and artificial neural networks (ANN) are used during the data processing. The outcomes showed that the %IE increased with inhibitor concentration and temperature up to 50 °C. The Taguchi method showed that the optimum conditions for the corrosion inhibition temperature were found to be 50 °C and a 0.05 M KI concentration. Two mathematical models are proposed to construct a relationship between %IE and independent variables: the exponent model (EM) and the polynomial model (PM). PM was more accurate than EM, with a significant correlation coefficient approaching 0.9851. Temperature had a greater effect on the %IE than inhibitor concentration, which was consistent with Taguchi's findings. In ANN analyses, five networks were suggested: linear, a generalized regression neural network (GRNN), radial basis functions (RBF), and two multi-layer perceptron (MLP) networks. The highest correlation coefficient (0.996) and lower absolute error (0.126) were achieved by MLP 2:2-9-4-1:1.

IntroductionAntenatal care (ANC) services play a crucial role in safeguarding the health of pregnant women during their reproductive years. This study aimed to evaluate the primary factors influencing the utilization of ANC among women of childbearing age in Isari town, Jigawa State.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study among 400 mothers of childbearing age, selecting them using a simple random sampling method. Data were collected using interviewer-administered questionnaires. The statistical analyses performed were descriptive analysis, Pearson’s chi-square test, and binary logistic regression analysis.ResultsThe majority of respondents (92.5%) indicated awareness of ANC, with a significant proportion expressing the necessity of ANC services (85.7%). 57.8% of the respondents indicated attending ANC services at least four times during pregnancy. Furthermore, the number of visits has a significant relationship with age (P < 0.001), educational level (P = 0.003), occupation (P = 0.043), mother’s knowledge of pregnancy danger signs (P = 0.001), and husband’s support for ANC (P < 0.001).ConclusionEnhancing ANC utilization will necessitate focusing on women residing in rural areas and those with limited educational attainment.

Objective To describe antibiotic prescribing practices using the WHO AWaRe (Access, Watch, Reserve) classification in West African children under 5 years of age attending public primary health centres (PHCs).Design Cross-sectional study.Setting The AIRE project implemented the systematic use of pulse oximetry into integrated management of childhood illness consultations in West African countries (Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger). We described antibiotic prescriptions for outpatient children at 16 PHCs and for severe cases referred at district hospitals.Patients Between 14 June 2021 and 19 June 2022, 15 854 outpatients were included: 968 neonates and young infants (0–28 days) and 14 886 children (2–59 months). Among them, 78 (8.1%) neonates and young infants and 385 (2.6%) children were hospitalised. We evaluated 58 hospitalised neonates and young infants and 275 hospitalised children, respectively.Main outcome measures Frequency of antibiotic prescriptions according to the AWaRe classification recommended by WHO.Results At the PHC level, proportions of neonates and young infants with ≥1 antibiotic prescription were 83%, 62%, 71% and 59% in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger, respectively. A total of 805 antibiotics were prescribed (85% Access and 13% Watch). The proportions of children with ≥1 antibiotic prescription reached 71%, 66%, 63% and 36% in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Niger, respectively. Out of the 9630 antibiotics prescribed, 93% were Access (mainly amoxicillin), and 7% Watch. At the hospital level, Watch antibiotics were mainly prescribed for severe cases referred. No Reserve antibiotics were prescribed.Conclusions High proportions of antibiotics were prescribed to outpatient children included, the appropriateness of which needs further study. Nevertheless, in every country, the proportion prescribed in the Access group reached the minimum threshold of 60% of all antibiotic prescriptions, as recommended by WHO.Trial registration number PACTR202206525204526.

The localization accuracy of a fingerprint-based localization system is dependent on several factors, one of which is the accuracy and efficiency at which the fingerprint database is clustered. Most highly efficient and accurate clustering algorithms have high time-dependent computational complexity (CC), which tends to limit their practical applicability. A technique that has yet to be explored is the sequential hybridization of multiple low-time CC clustering algorithms to produce a single moderate-time CC clustering algorithm with high localization accuracy. As a result, this paper proposes a clustering algorithm with a moderate time CC that is based on the sequential hybridization of the closest access point (CAP) and improved k-means clustering algorithms. The performance of the proposed sequential hybrid clustering algorithm is determined and compared to the modified affinity propagation clustering (m-APC), fuzzy c-mean (FCM), and 2-CAP algorithms presented in earlier research works using four experimentally generated and publicly available fingerprint databases. The performance metrics considered for the comparisons are the position root mean square error (RMSE) and clustering time based on big O notation. The simulation results show that the proposed sequential hybrid clustering algorithm has improved localization accuracy with position RMSEs of about 54%, 77%, and 52%, respectively, higher than those of the m-APC, FCM, and 2-CAP algorithms. In terms of clustering time, it is 99% and 79% faster than the m-APC and FCM algorithms, respectively, but 90% slower than the 2-CAP algorithm. The results have shown that it is possible to develop a clustering algorithm that has a moderate clustering time with very high localization accuracy through sequential hybridization of multiple clustering algorithms that have a low clustering time with poor localization accuracy. The affinity propagation clustering (APC) algorithm is popular for fingerprint database clustering because it can cluster without pre-defining the number of clusters. However, the clustering performance of the APC algorithm heavily depends on the chosen fingerprint similarity metric, with distance-based metrics being the most commonly used. Despite its popularity, the APC algorithm lacks comprehensive research on how distance-based metrics affect clustering performance. This emphasizes the need for a better understanding of how these metrics influence its clustering performance, particularly in fingerprint databases. This paper investigates the impact of various distance-based fingerprint similarity metrics on the clustering performance of the APC algorithm. It identifies the best fingerprint similarity metric for optimal clustering performance for a given fingerprint database. The analysis is conducted across five experimentally generated online fingerprint databases, utilizing seven distance-based metrics: Euclidean, squared Euclidean, Manhattan, Spearman, cosine, Canberra, and Chebyshev distances. Using the silhouette score as the performance metric, the simulation results indicate that structural characteristics of the fingerprint database, such as the distribution of fingerprint vectors, play a key role in selecting the best fingerprint similarity metric. However, Euclidean and Manhattan distances are generally the preferable choices for use as fingerprint similarity metrics for the APC algorithm across most fingerprint databases, regardless of their structural characteristics. It is recommended that other factors, such as computational intensity and the presence or absence of outliers, be considered alongside the structural characteristics of the fingerprint database when choosing the appropriate fingerprint similarity metric for maximum clustering performance.

Abstract Due to increased traffic and environmental concerns, this study addresses challenges in conventional asphalt concrete. Our focus is on enhancing the water resistance of asphalt mixes through the optimization of both the asphalt binder and the biochar-based geopolymer composite. We employ experiments and response surface methodology to assess their impact on volume, Marshall parameters, and water resistance. Asphalt binders were evaluated within the range of 4–6%, while biochar-based geopolymer composite levels varied from 0 to 4%. According to the findings, the incorporation of the biochar-based geopolymer composite improves asphalt properties, stiffness, and temperature sensitivity. Response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to construct robust mathematical models with high R 2 values (90%) and low p-values. Multi-objective optimization indicated that optimal content levels were 4.56% for the binder and 2.71% for the biochar-based geopolymer composite. Model accuracy was confirmed with less than a 5% error in validation tests. The research also identified structural changes in the asphalt binder caused by the BGC Si–O phase. Additionally, the leaching value for both BGC and BGC-MAB asphalt concrete was found to be substantially below the regulatory limit, demonstrating the environmental safety of incorporating BGC into the asphalt sector.

Abstract This study investigated the dynamics in pyrethriod resistance and the presence/frequencies of L1014F knockdown resistance mutant allelles in Culex quinquefasciatus vector populations from Uruan Local Government Area of AkwaIbom State, Southern Nigeria between the months of March and November, 2021. Uruan LGA is among the endemic LGAs for lymphatic filariasis in AkwaIbomState. Female Anopheles mosquitoes from Eman Uruan, Ituk Mbang and Idu Uruan were exposed to permethrin, deltamethrin and alphacypermethrin in CDC insecticide coated bottles for susceptibility bioassay following standard protocols. The mosquitoes were obtained as aquatic forms from the study sites and reared under laboratory conditions to adults. The adult mosquitoes were used for this study. All the mosquitoes used for the insecticide susceptibility bioassay were morphologically identified. Standard Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used for authenticating the Culex quinquefasciatus species. A portion of the vgsc (917 bp) gene spanning the entire intron and the exon containing the L1014F mutation associated with knockdown resistance (kdr) in the vectorswere amplified using Allele-SPECIFIC POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION (AS-PCR) in order to detect target site insensitivity in the vectors from the study sites. Results obtained revealed that vectors from all the study sites were resistant to permethrin insecticide (mortality rate: 18–23%). Suspected resistance (mortality rate: 90–93%) to deltamethrin and low resistance (mortality rate: 82–85%) to alphacypermethrin insecticides were detected. knockdown was more rapid with deltamethrin and alphacypermethrin than with permethrin across the study sites considering their KDT50 and KDT95. The frequency of the resistant phenotypes ranged from 35.14 to 55.3% across the study sites with a net of 45.1% resistant phenotype recorded in this study. Fingerprint database clustering is one of the methods used to reduce localization time and improve localization accuracy in a fingerprint-based localization system. However, optimal selection of initial hyperparameters, higher computation complexity, and interpretation difficulty are among the performance-limiting factors of these clustering algorithms. This paper aims to improve localization time and accuracy by proposing a clustering algorithm that is extremely efficient and accurate at clustering fingerprint databases without requiring the selection of optimal initial hyperparameters, is computationally light, and is easily interpreted. The two closest wireless access points (APs) to the reference location where the fingerprint is generated, as well as the labels of the two APs in vector form, are used by the proposed algorithm to cluster fingerprints. The simulation result shows that the proposed clustering algorithm has a localization time that is at least 45% faster and a localization accuracy that is at least 25% higher than the k-means, fuzzy c-means, and lightweight maximum received signal strength clustering algorithms. The findings of this paper further demonstrate the real-time applicability of the proposed clustering algorithm in the context of indoor wireless localization, as low localization time and higher localization accuracy are the main objectives of any localization system. Dermatoses are essentially caused by infection or free radical aggression, immunoallergic disorders, or can be secondary to general diseases. Management of dermatoses by modern medicine is complex and costly, and the development of alternative treatments is urgent. Opilia amentacea Roxb. is a woody climber plant traditionally used in Burkina Faso for treatment of bad skin diseases. This study was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of extracts of O. amentacea and to characterize potent fractions. The antimicrobial activity was determined using the disc diffusion and microdilution methods, while antioxidant activity was assessed using the 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. The content of the plant extracts in polyphenols and flavonoids was also studied. The results revealed several secondary metabolites in the leaves, stems and root bark extracts of the plant, including sterols, triterpenes, and flavonoids and tannins, and a generally high total polyphenol and total flavonoid content. Dichloromethane fractions of leaves (FDFe) and stem barks (FDET) exhibited the best antioxidant activity and were the most active on Gram-positive bacilli. Hexane leaves (FHFe) and hexane root bark (FHER) fractions exhibited the best antifungal activity against Candida tropicalis. High correlation (R2 = 0.932) was found between the total flavonoid content of extracts and ferric-reducing antioxidant power. In view of these results, the present study describes O. amentacea as a potential source of antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant agents and justifies the traditional uses of the plant as an anti-dermatosis plant.

Background Globally, human rights violations experienced by persons with psychosocial, intellectual or cognitive disabilities continue to be a concern. The World Health Organization's (WHO) QualityRights initiative presents practical remedies to address these abuses. This paper presents an overview of the implementation of the initiative in Ghana. Aims The main objective of the QualityRights initiative in Ghana was to train and change attitudes among a wide range of stakeholders to promote recovery and respect for human rights for people with psychosocial, intellectual and cognitive disabilities. Method Reports of in-person and online training, minutes of meetings and correspondence among stakeholders of the QualityRights initiative in Ghana, including activities of international collaborators, were analysed to shed light on the implementation of the project in Ghana. Results In-person and online e-training on mental health were conducted. At the time of writing, 40 443 people had registered for the training, 25 416 had started the training and 20 865 people had completed the training and obtained a certificate. The team conducted 27 in-person training sessions with 910 people. The successful implementation of the project is underpinned by a committed partnership among stakeholders, strong leadership from the coordinating agency, the acceptance of the initiative and the outcome. A few challenges, both in implementation and acceptance, are discussed. Conclusions The exposure of the WHO QualityRights initiative to a substantial number of key stakeholders involved in mental healthcare in Ghana is critical to reducing human rights abuses for people with psychosocial, intellectual and cognitive disabilities.

The work was carried out with small steel rods: cleaned and previously oxidized embedded in resistance Portland cement concrete cylinders exposed to dry conditions' In this investigation a theoretical model equation has been adopted including IR- drop term: AE =AEA +RAi = -bclogicorr.+ bclog/Ai/+R /Ai/ In order to determine corrosion paiameters of iystem investigated (i.e., icorr., bc, and Rc. A) equation above was based on the analysis of cathodic Polarization curve free from mass transf'er effect .It has been found that the corrosion curent of pre- oxidized steel is higher than the cleaned one , and this corrosion rate is concrete contaminant & time of exposure dependant. because of the importance of electrical resistance of concrete & its relationship to the corrosion rate of reinforcing steel. An attempt was made to find this resistance from the IR-drop term in the above mentioned equation.

Introduction Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) involves repeated administrations of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine plus amodiaquine to children below the age of 5 years during the peak transmission season in areas of seasonal malaria transmission. While highly impactful in reducing Plasmodium falciparum malaria burden in controlled research settings, the impact of SMC on infection prevalence is moderate in real-life settings. It remains unclear what drives this efficacy decay. Recently, the WHO widened the scope for SMC to target all vulnerable populations. The Ministry of Health (MoH) in Burkina Faso is considering extending SMC to children below 10 years old. We aim to assess the impact of SMC on clinical incidence and parasite prevalence and quantify the human infectious reservoir for malaria in this population.Methods and analysis We will perform a cluster randomised trial in Saponé Health District, Burkina Faso, with three study arms comprising 62 clusters of three compounds: arm 1 (control): SMC in under 5-year-old children, implemented by the MoH without directly observed treatment (DOT) for the full course of SMC; arm 2 (intervention): SMC in under 5-year-old children, with DOT for the full course of SMC; arm 3 (intervention): SMC in under 10-year-old children, with DOT for the full course of SMC. The primary endpoint is parasite prevalence at the end of the malaria transmission season. Secondary endpoints include the impact of SMC on clinical incidence. Factors affecting SMC uptake, treatment adherence, drug concentrations, parasite resistance markers and transmission of parasites will be determined.Ethics and dissemination The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine’s Ethics Committee (29193) and the Burkina Faso National Medical Ethics Committee (Deliberation No 2023-05-104) approved this study. The findings will be presented to the community; disease occurrence data and study outcomes will also be shared with the Burkina Faso MoH. Findings will be published irrespective of their results.Trial registration number NCT05878366.
