1. Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) with Hyper Suprime-Cam I: Revised Catalog of Coma Cluster UDGs

Abstract

This is the first in a series of papers on the properties of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in clusters of galaxies. We present an updated catalog of UDGs in the Coma cluster using \textit{g}- and \textit{r}-band images obtained with Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) of the Subaru telescope. We develop a method to find UDGs even in the presence of contaminating objects, such as halos and background galaxies. This study expands upon our previous works that covered about half the area of the Coma cluster. The HSC observations covered the whole Coma cluster up to the virial radius and beyond (an area twice larger than the previous studies) and doubled the numbers of UDGs ($r_{\rm eff, r} \geq 1.5$ kpc) and sub-UDGs ($1.0 \leq r_{\rm eff, r} < 1.5$ kpc) to 774 and 729 respectively. The new UDGs show internal properties consistent with those of the previous studies (e.g., S\'ersic index of approximately 1), and are distributed across the cluster, with a concentration around the cluster center. The whole cluster coverage clearly revealed an excess of their distribution toward the east to south-west direction along the cluster center, where Coma connects to the large scale structure, and where a known substructure exists (the NGC4839 subgroup). The alignment of the UDG distribution along the large scale structure around Coma supports the interpretation that most of them lie at the distance of the Coma cluster and the NGC4839 subgroup.

2. The $-12$ mag dip in the galaxy luminosity function of Hickson Compact Groups

Abstract

We present the galaxy luminosity functions (LFs) of four Hickson Compact Groups using image data from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. A distinct dip appeared in the faint-ends of all the LFs at $M_g\sim-12$. A similar dip was observed in the LFs of the galaxy clusters Coma and Centaurus. However, LFs in the Virgo, Hydra, and the field had flatter slopes and no dips. As the relative velocities among galaxies are lower in compact groups than in clusters, the effect of galaxy-galaxy interactions would be more significant in compact groups. The $M_g\sim-12$ dip of compact groups may imply that frequent galaxy-galaxy interactions would affect the evolution of galaxies, and the dip in LF could become a boundary between different galaxy populations.

Abstract

In this paper, we describe the optical imaging data processing pipeline developed for the Subaru Telescope's Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) instrument. The HSC Pipeline builds on the prototype pipeline being developed by the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope's Data Management system, adding customizations for HSC, large-scale processing capabilities, and novel algorithms that have since been reincorporated into the LSST codebase. While designed primarily to reduce HSC Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) data, it is also the recommended pipeline for reducing general-observer HSC data. The HSC pipeline includes high level processing steps that generate coadded images and science-ready catalogs as well as low-level detrending and image characterizations., Comment: 39 pages, 21 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

The Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) is a three-layered imaging survey aimed at addressing some of the most outstanding questions in astronomy today, including the nature of dark matter and dark energy. The survey has been awarded 300 nights of observing time at the Subaru Telescope and it started in March 2014. This paper presents the first public data release of HSC-SSP. This release includes data taken in the first 1.7 years of observations (61.5 nights) and each of the Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep layers covers about 108, 26, and 4 square degrees down to depths of i~26.4, ~26.5, and ~27.0 mag, respectively (5sigma for point sources). All the layers are observed in five broad bands (grizy), and the Deep and UltraDeep layers are observed in narrow bands as well. We achieve an impressive image quality of 0.6 arcsec in the i-band in the Wide layer. We show that we achieve 1-2 per cent PSF photometry (rms) both internally and externally (against Pan-STARRS1), and ~10 mas and 40 mas internal and external astrometric accuracy, respectively. Both the calibrated images and catalogs are made available to the community through dedicated user interfaces and database servers. In addition to the pipeline products, we also provide value-added products such as photometric redshifts and a collection of public spectroscopic redshifts. 5. Approximately A Thousand Ultra Diffuse Galaxies in the Coma cluster

Abstract

We report the discovery of 854 ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Coma cluster using deep R band images, with partial B, i, and Halpha band coverage, obtained with the Subaru telescope. Many of them (332) are Milky Way-sized with very large effective radii of r_e>1.5kpc. This study was motivated by the recent discovery of 47 UDGs by van-Dokkum et al. (2015); our discovery suggests >1,000 UDGs after accounting for the smaller Subaru field. The new UDGs show a distribution concentrated around the cluster center, strongly suggesting that the great majority are (likely longtime) cluster members. They are a passively evolving population, lying along the red sequence in the CM diagram with no Halpha signature. Star formation was, therefore, quenched in the past. They have exponential light profiles, effective radii re ~ 800 pc- 5 kpc, effective surface brightnesses mu_e(R)=25-28 mag arcsec-2, and stellar masses ~1x10^7 - 5x10^8Msun. There is also a population of nucleated UDGs. Some MW-sized UDGs appear closer to the cluster center than previously reported; their survival in the strong tidal field, despite their large sizes, possibly indicates a large dark matter fraction protecting the diffuse stellar component. The indicated baryon fraction ~<1% is less than the cosmic average, and thus the gas must have been removed from the possibly massive dark halo. The UDG population appears to be elevated in the Coma cluster compared to the field, indicating that the gas removal mechanism is related primarily to the cluster environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We present photometric recalibration of the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) and Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS). Recently, Yamanoi et al. (2012) suggested the existence of a discrepancy between the SDF and SXDS catalogs. We have used the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8 (DR8) catalog and compared stars in common between SDF/SXDS and SDSS. We confirmed that there exists a 0.12 mag offset in B-band between the SDF and SXDS catalogs. Moreover, we found that significant zero point offsets in i-band (~ 0.10 mag) and z-band (~ 0.14 mag) need to be introduced to the SDF/SXDS catalogs to make it consistent with the SDSS catalog. We report the measured zero point offsets of five filter bands of SDF/SXDS catalogs. Abstract

International audience; We investigate the color distribution of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) across the entire Coma cluster using the Hyper-Suprime Cam images from the Subaru telescope. We detect UDGs down to an effective surface brightness of 29 mag/arcsec2 in a 2 deg-radius circular region around the cluster center, out to the virial radius of Coma. This increases the number of Coma UDGs found with Suprime-cam in Yagi et al. 2016 by a factor of 2. With this new catalog, in conjunction with rigorous testing of the photometric zero-point, we confirm the presence of a radial color-gradient around the cluster center reported previously in the Suprime-cam catalog by Alabi et al. 2020. Within the inner 1 Mpc, we find that the color distributions of UDGs are slightly, but systematically, redder than those of UDGs outside this region. On the other hand, these central UDGs have magnitude distributions similar to UDGs away from the center; hence this is not a color shift along the color-magnitude relation. The central UDGs are redder than the red sequence of Coma. We consider the possibility that shift to red colors traces a difference in quenching time of star formation, by comparing the new observations with a model of ram-pressure stripping in extended galaxies.

Abstract

The Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) is a three-layered imaging survey aimed at addressing some of the most important outstanding questions in astronomy today, including the nature of dark matter and dark energy. The survey has been awarded 300 nights of observing time at the Subaru Telescope, and it started in 2014 March. This paper presents the first public data release of HSC-SSP. This release includes data taken in the first 1.7 yr of observations (61.5 nights), and each of the Wide, Deep, and UltraDeep layers covers about 108, 26, and 4 square degrees down to depths of i∼ 26.4, ∼26.5, and ∼27.0 mag, respectively (5 σ for point sources). All the layers are observed in five broad bands (grizy), and the Deep and UltraDeep layers are observed in narrow bands as well. We achieve an impressive image quality of 0${^{\prime\prime}_{.}}$6 in the iband in the Wide layer. We show that we achieve 1%–2% point spread function (PSF) photometry (root mean square) both internally and externally (against Pan-STARRS1), and ∼10 mas and 40 mas internal and external astrometric accuracy, respectively. Both the calibrated images and catalogs are made available to the community through dedicated user interfaces and database servers. In addition to the pipeline products, we also provide value-added products such as photometric redshifts and a collection of public spectroscopic redshifts. Abstract

In this paper, we describe the optical imaging data processing pipeline developed for the Subaru Telescope’s Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) instrument. The HSC Pipeline builds on the prototype pipeline being developed by the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope’s Data Management system, adding customizations for HSC, large-scale processing capabilities, and novel algorithms that have since been reincorporated into the LSST codebase. While designed primarily to reduce HSC Subaru Strategic Program (SSP) data, it is also the recommended pipeline for reducing general-observer HSC data. The HSC pipeline includes high-level processing steps that generate coadded images and science-ready catalogs as well as low-level detrending and image characterizations.

Abstract

The Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) is an 870 megapixel prime focus optical imaging camera for the 8.2 m Subaru telescope. The wide-field corrector delivers sharp images of 0${^{\prime\prime}_{.}}$2 (FWHM) in the HSC-iband over the entire 1${^{\circ}_{.}}$5 diameter field of view. The collimation of the camera with respect to the optical axis of the primary mirror is done with hexapod actuators, the mechanical accuracy of which is a few microns. Analysis of the remaining wavefront error in off-focus stellar images reveals that the collimation of the optical components meets design specifications. While there is a flexure of mechanical components, it also is within the design specification. As a result, the camera achieves its seeing-limited imaging on Maunakea during most of the time; the median seeing over several years of observing is 0${^{\prime\prime}_{.}}$67 (FWHM) in the iband. The sensors use p-channel, fully depleted CCDs of 200 μm thickness (2048 × 4176 15 μm square pixels) and we employ 116 of them to pave the 50 cm diameter focal plane. The minimum interval between exposures is 34 s, including the time to read out arrays, to transfer data to the control computer, and to save them to the hard drive. HSC on Subaru uniquely features a combination of a large aperture, a wide field of view, sharp images and a high sensitivity especially at longer wavelengths, which makes the HSC one of the most powerful observing facilities in the world.

Abstract

Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) is a wide-field imaging camera on the prime focus of the 8.2-m Subaru telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii. A team of scientists from Japan, Taiwan, and Princeton University is using HSC to carry out a 300-night multi-band imaging survey of the high-latitude sky. The survey includes three layers: the Wide layer will cover 1400 deg2in five broad bands (grizy), with a 5 σ point-source depth of r≈ 26. The Deep layer covers a total of 26 deg2in four fields, going roughly a magnitude fainter, while the UltraDeep layer goes almost a magnitude fainter still in two pointings of HSC (a total of 3.5 deg2). Here we describe the instrument, the science goals of the survey, and the survey strategy and data processing. This paper serves as an introduction to a special issue of the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, which includes a large number of technical and scientific papers describing results from the early phases of this survey.
