Abstract

During the early design stages of product-service systems (PSS), particular attention must be given to sustainability considerations to ensure the achievement of a sustainable PSS. However, there is a lack of decision-making support within existing design methods to help designers generating PSS solutions with reduced sustainability impact from the early design stages. To fill this gap, this paper elaborates on a decision support method coupling multi-criteria analysis and sustainability assessment, and considering PSS peculiarities. The aim of the method is to select PSS scenarios with the highest sustainability potential. Sustainability is assessed from multiple perspectives involving both the PSS actors’ points of view and sustainability pillars. The selection of the PSS design scenarios is supported by a multi-criteria analysis enabled by the ELECTRE I method. Furthermore, the paper elaborates on a case study around a PSS-oriented water-saving sanitary equipment intended for healthcare facilities. This provided some evidences of the applicability and relevance of the proposed method, which contributes ultimately to fostering sustainability integration within PSS design.

Abstract

Part 7: Safety and Collaboration Management; International audience; Organizations are increasingly working on business processes improvement to meet stakeholders’ requirement. Process engineering and improvement projects are challenged by identifying proper metrics to guide improvement effortsand mitigate process complexity. This latter is intuitively related to factors such as usability, modularity, reliability and maintainability. A process that is too complex is more likely to fail and produce costly quality problems. In a context of collaborative decision-making, complexity management must consider the expectations of several stakeholders, and the definition/use of suitable metricsis the starting point. The current paper identifiesandusesa set ofmetrics to enable the evaluation of process models. The proposed metric system is used within a case study highlighting the key role of modularity inmitigating processcomplexity.More generally, the results show how using the metric system can support complexity mitigation and therefore performance improvementin (re)engineered processes.

Abstract

Recent economic transformations have forced companies to redefine their value propositions, increasing traditional product offerings with supplementary services—the so-called Product-Service System (PSS). Among them, the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies is very common. However, the directions that companies are undertaking to offer new value to their customers in the Industry 4.0 have not yet been investigated in detail. Based on a focus group, this paper contributes to this understanding by identifying the main trajectories that would shape a future scenario in which PSS and Industry 4.0 would merge. In addition, future research directions addressing (a) the transformation of the PSS value chain into a PSS ecosystem, (b) the transformation inside a single company towards becoming a PSS provider, and (c) the digital transformation of the traditional PSS business model are identified.

Abstract

International audience; Digital technologies are encouraging manufacturing companies in their servitization process by accelerating the offer of integrated product and service to create new value and grow relationships with customers in the Industry 4.0 era. In parallel, digitalization and servitization research streams are merging and paving the way for the Smart Product-Service System (Smart PSS). By analyzing the concept of Smart PSS, this paper questions the convergence between digital and service orientations and considers how digital technologies are used to enable decisions along the PSS lifecycle and/or at different planning levels. Applying topic modeling, a semi-systematic literature review on the combination of digital technologies with PSS has highlighted five main research streams: PSS design, digital servitization, assessing tool for PSS decisions, knowledge management along the lifecycle, sustainability business models. The development over time of these research streams has been tracked leading to the definition of a new research agenda on Smart PSS.

Abstract

This work addresses the problem of developing control algorithms for the control of the aerodynamic lift of wind turbine blades using air injection, taking into account disturbances caused by turbulent perturbations. For this, a test bench is used where the lift of a 2D blade section in a wind tunnel can be controlled by a set of micro-jets close to the trailing edge. Through a continuous, local identification of the lift variations a model-free control that does not need any prior knowledge of the system is proposed. It allows the control of the flow of the micro-jets and stabilizes the lift around a tracking reference. The ability of the proposed control algorithm to track the lift reference when subjected to external perturbations, i.e., gusts, is discussed. In particular, this work demonstrates that the lift can be set to particular values using the proposed control strategy, and can be re-stabilized to pre-gust lift conditions. Experimental results illustrate globally the feasibility of such a control.

Abstract

International audience; Companies are seeking more and more to offer customized goods and services to customers to be able to satisfy their needs. Several methods emerged to fulfill the needs of customization without affecting the performance of the company. Modularity has been considered as an effective method to address the challenges regarding variety management in the product and service domain. It has been addressed in the product domain but rarely in the service domain. This paper aims to provide a method to modularize a service-oriented system that consists of products and services. The method uses a set of modularization criteria and clustering techniques to form service-oriented system modules (product and/or service modules). The output of the clustering process is evaluated using indicators to provide decision-makers with insights into potentially preferred clustering alternatives. A test case is presented in order to show the applicability of the method.

Abstract

International audience; The design of innovative offers involves deep collaboration between the provider and the customer to create higher value than in traditional offers. Product-Service Systems (PSS) are bundles of products and services and constitute innovative offers designed to fit complex customer needs. The academic literature on PSS development has a strong focus on the provider perspective, and only a few works address customer involvement in the process of value co-creation. This paper proposes a methodological framework composed of a customer view and a provider view, highlighting the interface between them, in which value co-creation takes place. The proposed framework aims at supporting the collaboration process between the customer and the provider during the entire PSS development. The framework has been built within a R&D project in a French company called Vibratec.

Abstract

International audience; Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) emerged in literature during the last two decades with the aim to respond to the rapid increase in product demand and variations. The implementation of such solutions in the industry is very recent and remains difficult. In this article, an analysis of the industrial requirements and challenges involving four key aspects of RDSS (reconfigurability, digitalization, servitization and sustainability) is based on semi-structured interviews conducted with representatives from the industry. Further, the identified requirements and challenges are compared to those extracted from an extensive literature review. The findings of the comparison are divided into technology and organization oriented issues and show a strong interconnection of the four key aspects: Digitalization offers possibilities for the implementation of sustainable systems, servitization creates the possibility for companies to achieve more flexibility through reconfigurable systems and the further development of RMS offers more possibilities for digitalization and thus a better adaptation to current requirements.

Abstract

This position paper introduces a Smart Innovation Environment for experimentation related to digital transformation projects, for the consolidation of a proposed "Digital Engineer" skill profile (with a business-oriented facet labelled as "Digital Innovator"). In the Internet of Things era, this profile implies the ability to perform both digital design and engineering activities, to semantically bridge multiple layers of abstraction and specificity - from business analysis down to cyber-physical engineering. In the paper's proposal, this integration is enabled by conceptual modelling methods and interoperable modelling tools, tailored to support the creation of Digital Twins for innovative digital business models. The architecture of the proposed environment is guided by a Design Research perspective - i.e., it is a treatment to an education "design problem" regarding the Digital Engineer skill profile in the IoT era. The proposed environment encompasses workspaces and toolkits are currently evaluated in "innovation corners" deployed across the OMiLAB ecosystem.
