13. The syntax of aspectual deixis in Mandarin Chinese

Abstract

This thesis investigates the aspectual use of the deictic verbs in Mandarin Chinese, such as lai `come' in wo lai kai men `I'll open the door' and jing xia xin lai `calm down'. Deictic verbs are usually used to indicate movement in space, the location of which is related to the speaker. In addition to physical movement, deictic verbs can also be used in a metaphorical way, where abstract motion takes place. I argue that in Mandarin Chinese, when the deictic verb appears before and after a verb phrase, it functions as a viewpoint aspect. The preverbal aspectual deictic verb refers to the state prior to the occurrence of the event. Both the pre-VP lai `come' and the pre-VP qu `go' signify the state before the event, yet they view the event from different angles. On the other hand, the deictic verb following the verb phrase indicates some part of the event. In this usage, lai `come' refers to the result state of the event and qu `go' designates the early part of the event. I propose two Deictic Phrases between ModP and AspP for the aspectual deictic verb. When the aspect is associated with the speaker's physical location, the deictic verb is in the Spatial Deictic head; when the aspect is related to the speaker's perspective, the deictic verb is in the Nonspatial Deictic head. These Deictic heads inherit [+/-realize] features from C. When the feature is [-realize], it refers to the state prior to the occurrence of the event and agrees with the event in situ. When the feature is [+realize], it refers to some part of the event and triggers the event to move to the Spec,DeicP, making the deictic verb appear after the verb phrase.

Abstract

A pilot-scale field experiment demonstrated that a one-time amendment of emulsified vegetable oil (EVO) reduced groundwater U(VI) concentrations for 1 year in a fast-flowing aquifer. However, little is known about how EVO amendment stimulates the functional gene composition, structure, and dynamics of groundwater microbial communities toward prolonged U(VI) reduction. In this study, we hypothesized that EVO amendment would shift the functional gene composition and structure of groundwater microbial communities and stimulate key functional genes/groups involved in EVO biodegradation and reduction of electron acceptors in the aquifer. To test these hypotheses, groundwater microbial communities after EVO amendment were analyzed using a comprehensive functional gene microarray. Our results showed that EVO amendment stimulated sequential shifts in the functional composition and structure of groundwater microbial communities. Particularly, the relative abundance of key functional genes/groups involved in EVO biodegradation and the reduction of NO3 (-), Mn(IV), Fe(III), U(VI), and SO4 (2-) significantly increased, especially during the active U(VI) reduction period. The relative abundance for some of these key functional genes/groups remained elevated over 9 months. Montel tests suggested that the dynamics in the abundance, composition, and structure of these key functional genes/groups were significantly correlated with groundwater concentrations of acetate, NO3 (-), Mn(II), Fe(II), U(VI), and SO4 (2-). Our results suggest that EVO amendment stimulated dynamic succession of key functional microbial communities. This study improves our understanding of the composition, structure, and function changes needed for groundwater microbial communities to sustain a long-term U(VI) reduction.

30. Generation and Fate of Nanoplastics in the Intestine of Plastic-Degrading Insect (Tenebrio molitorLarvae) during Polystyrene Microplastic Biodegradation

Abstract

The insect Tenebrio molitorexhibits ultrafast efficiency in biodegrading polystyrene (PS). However, the generation and fate of nanoplastics (NPs) in the intestine during plastic biodegradation remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the biodegradation of PS microplastics (MPs) mediated by T. molitorlarvae over a 4-week period and confirmed biodegradation by analyzing Δδ13C in the PS before and after biotreatment (−28.37‰ versus −24.88‰) as an effective tool. The ·OH radicals, primarily contributed by gut microbiota, and H2O2, primarily produced by the host, both increased after MP digestion. The size distribution of residual MP particles in excrements fluctuated within the micrometer ranges. PS NPs were detected in the intestine but not in the excrements. At the end of Weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4, the concentrations of PS NPs in gut tissues were 3.778, 2.505, 2.087, and 2.853 ng/lava, respectively, while PS NPs in glands were quantified at 0.636, 0.284, and 0.113 ng/lava and eventually fell below the detection limit. The PS NPs in glands remained below the detection limit at the end of Weeks 5 and 6. This indicates that initially, NPs generated in the gut entered glands, then declined gradually and eventually disappeared or possibly biodegraded after Week 4, associated with the elevated plastic-degrading capacities of T. molitorlarvae. Our findings unveil rapid synergistic MP biodegradation by the larval host and gut microbiota, as well as the fate of generated NPs, providing new insights into the risks and fate associated with NPs during invertebrate-mediated plastic biodegradation.

Abstract

Although mulching is a widely used agronomic practice, its effects on the rhizosphere remain poorly understood. Here, we employed amplicon and transcriptomic sequencing to investigate variations in a grapevine rhizosphere system under mulch treatment (rice straw + felt + plastic film). Analyzing 16S and intergenic spacer (ITS) rRNA sequences indicated that the Shannon and Simpson indices of the bacterial and fungal communities increased markedly under mulch treatment. The bacterial and fungal compositions varied significantly between the control and mulch treatments. Mulching enriched for potentially beneficial microbes that confer disease resistance to plants or participate in nitrogen metabolism (Kaistobacter, Ammoniphilus, Lysobacter, Ammoniphilus, Alicyclobacillus, Aquicella, Nitrospira, Chaetomium, and Microascus), whereas more potentially pathogenic microbes (Fusarium and Gibberella) were detected in the control. Moreover, certain bacteria and fungi exhibited different correlations with the root transcriptome functions of the MEBlue module. The complexity of the bacterial and fungal co-occurrence networks increased with higher node numbers, positive and negative links after mulching. Following mulching, the rhizosphere showed elevated pH, organic matter, and catalase activities, and decreased sucrase and cellulase and β-glucosidase activities. Our results provide comprehensive data showing how a grapevine rhizosphere system responded to mulching treatment and shed important insight into mulching practices for fruit trees.
